Keeping domestic Discus is rather easy and not any harder than other South American cichlids….However keeping Wild discus is a completely different journey and demands an incredible amount of dedication towards tank maintenance. I’ve kept both and even though I like the look of wilds better, I would tell anyone who asks to lean towards domestic vs wild.

Excellent advise. Years ago I started with discus and did well, however, I researched, did water changes with a python system and enjoy your videos as a refresher and simply enjoy seeing your fish. Like anything, of some viewer decides to start with discus please listen to him. It's also easier to care for bigger discus. I started with about 3 inch in size and all from the same supplier, added to the tank at the same time. I recommend a private owned store /supplier over big chain stores and taking the time to visit a few times looking over how the fish are cared for and look for sick or dead fish and if they breed the discus it's better.

Kept discus. Got out of freshwater to keep an SPS reef tank and now coming back to discus. Couldn’t agree with your list more. I had discus spawning in rock hard 8.0 PH system. However, I had sand and I’m going bare bottom this time. I ran auto water changes through a drip system in addition to gravel vacuuming and will repeat that. Sumps make drip systems easy and fortunately I’m on a well so I pay a flat rate for water. Get good discus from a reputable breeder, keep a good routine, keep their water clean, and they are happy

Lights area Germany Company I will get you the name. Plants are mostly Java Ferns and Anubias of several types. The dimensions are 54"long X 18.5" High X 29" Deep

Keeping your Discus in a bare bottom display tank is a matter of preference. If you’re breeding them then bare bottom is the way to go. I successfully keep Discus in a planted tank. Keeping Discus for an experienced hobbyist isn’t hard if you follow some basic requirements keep the water warm & clean give them plenty of room, feed them a varied high quality food and finally enjoy the view.

One Discus is never a good idea. You would have to hit the Discus lotto in order to find the perfect fish that would do OK by himself. I would keep no less than a group of 7 to 10 in a tank your size make sure you get some Cory’s of some kind for cleanup and a pleco if you have wood in your tank as far as decorating, I have videos about that as well for discus tank specifically. Please go look at some of those videos give me a thumbs up on them subscribe if you have not already subscribed and share with your friends even if you have to strong-arm them just kidding good luck. I’m one of them, I’ve been keeping fish for many years and have lost very few fish during that time because I do keep up with my tank maintenance but I’m still nervous to venture into discus
My experience is that you have to do the water changes pretty regularly without failure. Once you have an established tank and you have good water parameters, these fish are not much different than any others. Follow my rules outlined in this video and just jump in. There is always risk, but less is more. Good Luck!

Great video, I just bought three 2 inch discus fish, I just introduced them into my tank. I saw online i should wait 24 hours after putting them into the tank b4 the first feeding. Is this true? When should I try to feed them for the 1st time in their new tank?
@@TheBarrios69 I agree with that. I sometimes watch the fish for a few hours and then add a small amount of flake. But certainly 24 hours is reasonable. You don’t want to follow your tank water up with food that goes on eaten. Is this a community tank? That has a lot of other fish? It also depends on your water chemistry. People that say their not hard to keep seem to always have optimal parameters like lower pH. Everyone's experience is different. I would never say they are an easy fish to keep and my husbandry is on point.
My pH is 7.8 and stable. This would be considered on the high end for Discus fish. What I have found is that pH stability is the key here. I have friends who keep “Hybrid” Discus Fish in a pH as high as 9.5 with no issues at all. If your ph is stable this particular water parameter is not a issue. Water hardness is also hard on wild strains of Discus, but as long as it is not to high Hybrids will adapt as long as all other water parameters are in line. Acceptable water hardness is a consideration as well. Ideally, freshwater aquariums have a GH between 4-8 dGH (or 70-140 ppm). All animals need some minerals, but certain fish like livebearers, goldfish, and African cichlids prefer higher GH levels. If you're trying to breed discus or other soft water fish, you may need to reduce the GH to 3 dGH (or 50 ppm) or below. I hope this explains my success and also I think the word “Easy” might be a bad choice of words. Perhaps we can say not as complicated as many are led to believe. Thanks for you input. Your comment is valid. My tanks are the best indicator that even water parameters can be overcome to some degree.

I am considering purchasing a 114 (or 160) gallon discus tank to be set up - AND maintained --by an aquarium store here in Houston. They said they only need to come out twice a month for maintenance of the tank. However, you are saying a 30% water change twice a week is optimal. My tank would be situated near my kitchen sink so water changes would be easy for me. In other words, I don't mind the work. However, do you have any views why they think coming out only twice a month is good enough?
ALSO, I mentioned that I would imagine the fish would need cycling (of a few months) before they'd put the fish in the tank. The store guy said, they'd would put the fish in about 7 days after set up. Do you have any thoughts on that?
That seems very strange. Are you sure they know you want Discus? Any tank in my opinion needs more care than that. That tank cannot be fully cycled unless they are seeding it. I still would not trust a seeded tank that only ran 7 days for expensive fish. You will be very disappointed I think.

Your tank becomes your quarantine tank. Use Paraguard by Seachem for 3 days when you get new fish. I always recommend a quarantine tank but not everyone has that luxury. This tank is made by JBJ 75 gallons. They supply me.
I don’t have a water supply system like you do. My tap water is 8.2 PH and my KH is 2 according to the API’S Master’s Water test kit. I have a 90 gallon cycling now & will do for some time until the tank is fully seasoned. It seems the KH of 2 is a bit too low even for discus. Any advice? I could use it. I am getting so many different opinions on how to keep discus. I have been told by a local fish store owner to bring my KH up some by using a buffer. I don’t know everything but wouldn’t that sky rocket an already high PH? Respectfully, Marty Borst 0:35
Don’t worry about pH. If they are tank raised it does not matter. What matters is that whatever your pH is that it remains stable snd they will do fine. Keep the water clean way more important! Don’t make it hard on yourself.

@@martyborst5645 I would get them to eat as many kinds of food as you can. Discuses are both mid-tank and bottom feeders. I have found that pellets that are recommended for discus will float at the rate they should. If you watch some of my videos on feeding, you will see that I recommend a quick turn-off switch for your pump or pumps while feeding. This keeps the food in one area of the tank and a better chance to have all the food eaten. Make sure you plug it back in or switch it back on after about 10 minutes with a timer or a reminder on your phone. Works great!
If do over filtration is it ok for discus tank any suggestions on over filtration
In my opinion, you can never over filter. You must however replace trace elements and things that might be beneficial to your fish's health.
I'd like to setup discuss tank, my issue is heating. Would I be OK for 400liters tank to have 2 fluval e200w and sump 120 litres with 100w? Or what is your recommendation...thx

120 Gallon JBJ Tank Plants for this are Java Fern and Anubias. I feed many different things, but no live foods.

I have a 75 I’ve had running for about 2.5 years and have had good and bad luck with the hobby. Been in the hobby for about 6.5 years consistently. All freshwater. In my 75 gallon I have a 750GPH canister filter with a UV sterilizer and I use sand in my tank. Always had a planted aquarium, I have a few a few gourami and neons with a pleco, I’ve been considering getting 6 2.5 inch discus and I’m extremely nervous and on the fence about it. Any advice?

You have the perfect setup. I would not be the least bit nervous if you are willing to put i the work of 2 water changes per week. 30-50% If I were you I would go with 3.5" fish and let them group at 7-9 fish in that size tank. They will do very well.

@@tracemiller1519 As far as a backup filter goes I would just put a skimmer on and a OASE Hang On Back Filter of whatever size you like. You can never have to much filtration. 2.5 Inch fish will be fine. I just worry about "STUNTING" sometimes but your tank is perfectly big enough to avoid that.

I believe there is less stress with flop and drop. I have not lost one yet. More stressful slowly acclimating. That is my way not saying that is the only way.
What rocks are those? I think it will change the ph and kH in your water. Not good for discus.
The rocks are Seiryu Stones. They have been in this aquarium for over two years. Ph is stable at 7.8 and never changes.

No values changes in this tank that has been running several years.
If inert-rocks won't harm discus.i keep inert lava rock in my sump as bio media alongside k1 & have never experienced any change in gh/kh/ph

Sir discus jump out of tank or not
Like any fish they can. All my tanks have glass or plexiglass covers. Plexiglass will warp over time so I recommend real tempered glass made for Aquariums. Yes they can jump.
I want to keep bare bottom tank is it necessary to place white or black paper under tank so that discus fish can't see himself in bottom glass. I hv glow tetra so I can't put paper under tank now what I can do.

This video makes me realize that people are making fish keepinh unnecessarily hard and expensive. First they overfeed the fish so that there's food all over the place. And then you got to buy an expensive equipment to remove the food that you shouldn't have put in a tank in the first place.

While keeping discus, when doing water changes does the incoming water have to be at the same temperature as what's in the tank.

Great video!! What happens when your fish gets sick in the med tank? Medicate the whole tank or... move one to a another med tank?
That is what the tank is for. Run carbon in there for 48 hours and then do a 50% water change making sure the temps are very close so as not to shock your fish. follow the instructions on the new medication you are wanting to use. Be patient and above all know what diseases you are dealing with.
