Keep at it Mark! I too had a Chinese partner and learned a lot from her about the culture and some of the language. Chinese as a spoken language is not so hard really for English speakers to learn if you keep practising and use it regularly. Start with simple words and phrases like Ni Hao/hello.. I think in some ways Chinese spoken language is a lot easier than many European languages because it's very flat and there's not much difficulty on pronunciation. The challenge with learning Chinese is mastering the Hanzi written Chinese characters!!! Made in China is about all I recognize lol. Ni Hao = Knee How! That's my trick. I Anglicise Chinese words and phrases in my head changing the phonetic sound and spelling which makes them easier to remember and use...xi = she..
