I prefer traditional archery myself. So far, the closest I've come to shooting a compound is when my cousin-in-law let me shoot his crossbow for a bit, unless you wanna count that as compound.
I find the crossbow a little too time consuming for my taste, having to hold it down with your foot and pull the string (or rather, cord) back with that pull assist tool [whatever it's called].
I did have a little fun with it at the time, but I prefer pulling the arrow out from a quiver, nocking it on the string, pulling it back (without assistance) and letting it go.
I've had a long bow for years that's beginner/intermediate, and just fairly recently got a recurve. I use 'em both back and forth, switching between the 2 depending on which arrow I pulled out.
But I'm thinking I'll get a second quiver to have a designated one for each bow, with the arrows I use for my longbow being in one, and the arrows for my recurve in the other.

When the bowstring begins to hit the hand, the tightening usually stops.

I love this! Been shooting a longbow for 30 years and traditional archery is the most humbling yet rewarding form of archery there is! Would love to see the crew out on the course with traditional gear one of these days!

I did buy a cheap Recurve last year, The Black Hunter take down. Thought I would give it a go, put a good shop made string on it, the bow would shoot a lot better than I can but its brilliant fun...🏹👍👍

Excellent! Now you are gonna have some fun! It's a whole new game without sights.
After a few hundred arrows you will get the hang of it. Kinda like throwing a baseball to someone.
They call it Instinctive Shooting. This is how it all started. Wait till you get a Bear Grizzly or a Bear Kodiak Magnum in your hands. Started Traditional a year and a half ago. There's a learning curve for sure, but man it's fun!

My mom got my grandfathers old recurve bow( my dads dad) it was once top of the line competition bow. She recently wanted to try archery. She can’t pull it yet. We went to Cabellers to get it tooned. It created a line because it was a “ troublesome bow “

Get a tab, shooting bare fingers is rough on your digits. If you’re shooting 3 under get a 3 under tab. Gives you a much cleaner release off the bowstring.

  • @erxkeel

Get that young lady a Tab to shoot with. Learning recurve is awesome 👍🏻

  • @nuttjeffable

If you get the chance pick yourself up a finger tab. It will help your fingers from going numb/pain. Great shooting. Welcome to trad

I've watched many videos with people saying that you do not have to unstring the bow when you're not using it unless it's going to be a long time without using it

Great technique! I love seeing people “pulling through” their shots and utilizing this technique. Im tired of people trying to force the “open up the fingers” technique on others.

Not meaning to be a smart ass but shooting a recurve in this style is not instinctive. It’s “ gap” aiming which is learning where to visually hold the arrow point in relation to the target. Instinctive is like throwing a baseball- you just look at where you want the ball to go and throw. It’s an unconscious act basically. Instinctive shooting requires literally thousands of shots to train your muscles!eyes etc to automatically do all the movements without you even thinking about it. I was a recurve and long bow archer for years beginning in 1963 at 13 years old. Years later I got into building self and laminated long bows. Been there done that. I wished I lived near you guys so I could help Bri on this. How many pounds was she pulling on that recurve? Just wondering as I’m a lefty too.

Brianna: If you're coming over to the light side, and you wanna know about recurve shooting, check out Florida-based 2-times-Olympic silver medallist Jake Kaminski's channel here on You Tube.
These days he's learning his way into barebow (3 fingers under) but there ain't much he doesn't know about recurve shooting, and he's putting it all out there on UA-cam. Maybe a Kaminski/Disciples joint production wouid be good viewing. Check him oput.

Loving your stuff, BTW - although I doubt I'm ever gonna fall in love with compound bows. Too much like the archer is operating a machine. With recurve the 'machine' is an organic combination of bow, arrow, and archer. But hey - if it floats your boat . . .

You're shooting without an arm guard in a tank top. 😊 hit that forearm, and you won't forget one the next time!! 😁 It's like a drug. It gets addicting. Love the unstructors' explanations.
