Rick Steves, America's most respected authority on European travel, writes European travel guidebooks, and hosts travel shows on public television and public radio.
Merry Christmas! To celebrate the season, I’m sharing clips, extras and behind-the-scenes notes from Rick Steves' European Christmas.
Writing the Rick Steves' European Christmas script was a fun challenge, and I needed to tap my Europeans friends not just to be good tour guides, but to take us into their homes to be there with their families as they celebrated. England came through royally. Maddy Thomas (who runs my favorite minibus tours from Bath into the countryside) has a lovely family and delighted our crew with kindergartners singing in ancient churches, crusty blokes playing gruff Father Christmas, and an intimate afternoon with her kids and husband preparing the figgy pudding and mincemeat pies for a fairy-tale English Christmas.

Thanks for sharing this with us, Rick.

This tugs at my heart SO MUCH. And the idea of going to church in one built in the 1300's just blows my American mind. I love Christmas in Europe, especially London & Paris.
Beautiful program that I watch multiple times during the Holiday season. (Ok, and in July sometimes lol.) Thank you, Rick! Always wonder about the families featured, and how big those kiddies all are!
A must see choir is the King's College choir in Cambridge.
My Daughter Michelle was Christened in a 13 Century Church in nearby Chew Stoke 7 miles SE of Bristol and 15 miles West/SW of Bath! Bath is my 2nd favorite small City after Innsbruck Austria and just ahead of Williamsburg, VA and St Augustine, FL to date! I'll KEEP ON TRAVELING! Chag Sameach ie Happy Holidays UK & WORLD. PTL Advent Shalom
Thank you so much for posting these videos. Just what I was looking for! I can almost smell the mince pies!
I love all the music in this Rick Steves Christmas in Europe special...particularly Bath Abbey Girls Choir singing Babe of Bethelem, city of Numberg choir, and most of all Bath Abbey Boys and Men's Choir singing These Three Kings
i love this holiday special. i watch it several times (i have both the dvd and the music cd) every christmas season. thank you so much for creating this cozy and heartwarming production!
america: milk and cookies for santa
london: mince pies and mulled wine for santa and carrot for the reindeer
Brandy
I adore Bath, England and can not wait to return!
That village is called Castle Combe - we were there in August this year. One of the most absolute beautiful villages you will ever see anywhere! Bath was amazing too, especially the Roman Bath tour. The Cathedral with the 'fan-vaulted' ceiling is supposedly the finest example of that style anywhere in the world. Cheers (from NY).
thanks for sharing this beautiful Europe
Your videos are so great! Congratulations! Very good quality
me too. i CANNOT miss this . this choir is absolutely amazing Eh?
FANTASTIC CHOIR !!!!!!
✨⭐️✨🎄✨⭐️✨. MERRY CHRISTMAS one and all from England 2017. Thank you so much for sharing this lovely video .
Those kids are really good at singing honestly
Funny story. When I watched this on my local PBS station with the subtitles turned on, when it got to the part where in the Christmas market scene where a man approaches a seller asking for a mulled wine, when he said “a mulled wine, please?”, the subtitles said “an old wine, please?” Ha Ha Ha Ha!!!! Tv subtitle humor.
I love England. I am going live there.
This must have been so fun to go around and tape!
The choir sounds like one out of Le Chorus
Beautiful 💓💗💗
@srculver Yes this is true! When i was younger we left mince pies but with milk instead of wine. I guess thats a native cultural twist between our countries.
Wow it sure is rare to hear a little kid say "I don't know" when Santa asks her what she wants for Christmas. At least in the US.
Jahahhaha yeahh
el kompa ricko steevo!!
Minced pie and mulled wine, now that is my type of treat. Americana would use Coca Cola. I'll go up a notch with a smoking pipe.
Some people help me to get those two sections of music and put them separately here on UA-cam so I can listen to them sometimes. Jie Song, 2020 December 15th At 4:21.
What is the song called that the boys/men are singing?
3:31 watch out for the pearl little babies. Jewllery is not for babies
What's the song at 2:15, does anybody know?
Come to Colombia
Does anyone know the music that starts at 2:17? is it a Carol? I've wanted to know for years.
It's a Christmas choral song called "Babe of Bethlehem" by Edmund Walters.
I just discovered it myself! Hope you see this comment. :)
@@malcolmmackinnon9513 Yay! Thank you! I got the dvd in 2006 as part of my local PBS fund drive and have watched it every Christmas season ever since. Stay safe. Happy Holidays!
@@thecottage4493 Glad I could help :)
I understand that this clip/ show was produced for an American audience who has a very romanticised view of Christmas in the Uk /Europe but the majority of us do not celebrate Christmas like this .
This clip shows a minority (ie rich) celebration of Christmas
It is a lovely clip though
Those kids are about 20 by now...
(1)'Ding Dong(or Dang) Merrily On High' or (2)'Deck The Hall(s)' might be the holiday music which I suddenly remembered the other day in my bathing-tub but soon forgot which one it was. What is the name of the first song in the beginning? I guess it is Ding Dang or Ding Dong but I am not certain already. Jie Song, 2020 December 15th At 3:58-4:01-4:03. Enjoy U. K. life, Ladies and Gentlemen, and come to North America to play and get a second house.
did he say they leave Santa minced pies and wine? so different from the states: cookies and milk
And don't forget carrots for the reindeer.
Its our Puritan founders fault... :-)
FANTASTIC CHOIR !!!!!!!!!!
