I'm a Shanghainese immigrant to US. Yes, the grass REALLY is greener in the US. But the big disclaimer is IF you come here legally and you are a good student. I came here as a top student. My wife is from GuangXi, and we were classmates in graduate school. We, like MOST chinese Americans are now living the American Dream. Keep in mind, most Chinese Americans are wealthier than even white americans. Most of us have university degrees, and 25% of us have masters/doctorates.

@@mingzmings88 as an American I'll agree. Chinese out of all groups have the ability to live in any circumstance because Chinese eat bitter. That's why there's a Chinatown in every city of the world no matter how poor. Unfortunately when these Chinese reach the US they'll find it's no easier than back in China. The pay is high but the living expenses are higher. Many Americans have to live on credit debt just to get by. The Chinese couple in Monterey Park in this clip complained that the cost of groceries were so high but if the set foot outside the Chinese communities they'll find the regular supermarket prices are even higher. Like that one guy said maybe half go back to China. The rest will live lives of toil. In past generations the Chinese parents accept this in exchange for their children being well educated in the US and live an elevated life but in this new age that's no longer a guarantee as many American college graduates struggle to find good paying jobs upon graduation.
@@mingzmings88 for you the US costs of living are not bad because it's similar to Singapore. San Francisco is a bit higher than SG but in Las Vegas Arizona Dallas it should be cheaper than SG. For mainland Chinese it's a different story like you said especially these migrant worker types who live in maybe 3rd tier Chinese cities US cities will be a price shock. Not sure what you mean target. target them for what? Not sure what you mean. I think lot of these illegal immigrants to the US left China mainly because they were sold a false hope by gangster human trafficking groups doing certain promotions to people in China who are in bad situations whatever those may be. As you can see from the show some of these people thought the streets were paved with gold still same as the Chinese who sold other Chinese the same stories hundreds of years ago to look for the gold mountain. In this episode where the one guy went to the immigration lawyer she said if he stays there's a chance that if he wants to stay he won't get a green card or permanent residency status and he can only have working rights and will report to the Chinese embassy. But there's a good chance the Chinese embassy wouldn't even give these people the papers to be able to return to China by plane. This means for many of these people the CCP views them as better for Chinese society to be rid of them for whatever reasons. China wouldn't even waste time to have them back to punish if that's what you mean.
@@mingzmings88 CCP target them? why are you so sure of that? Maybe CCP is fine that they leave China. Thousands freely leave China daily to make Singapore , Malaysia, Indonesia , Australia and all parts of the world their new homes. Just like thousands leave USA and Canada to live in other countries. You heard of anyone being prosecuted for doing that in their home countries? Please lah , don't be biased in your opinion. This phenomena of hordes of people entering a country illegally is only happening in USA , why? maybe it's because the current government really support it. They want illegal immigrants. They rather house them and feed them while they struggle with their own homeless citizen . Maybe if Singapore open its border like American do, thousands of illegal immigrants will flock to Singapore too.
wondering why they were robbed of everything but still have their phones with them ? Amazing documentary... I havent been hooked on a documentary for a very long time.... THIS IS REALLY REALLY GOOD
I have the same question. If they are able to borrow some money from back home, doesn't it make sense to keep the money back in the account than carrying all in cash?
There ya go! I see that without fail. These downtrodden people trying to get to the US and all carrying cellphones. We’re mass deporting in a couple of months. We don’t need any more foreign people to deal with for a while!
Thank you for telling the story in close up. I moved from Hong Kong to Canada 30 years ago but I am lucky that I got educated and was permitted to immigrate legally without the hardship and life threatening situations. ❤
After seeing the hardships of other groups , it feels the Chinese are jumping the line paying their way illegally entering the USA. They’re not running for hardships but believed in personally financial gain believed an unfortunate future of uncertainty!
It seems to me like the Chinese migrants doing this trek are not in the same precarious situation that the Haitian/South American migrants are in. It seems to be that they're being intentionally mislead into thinking there is something for them in the U.S that they can't find in China, and as they arrive they are finding out they made a mistake.
Like that one family, they think the US is paved with gold. Meanwhile my Chinese family is thinking of leaving the US to go to China just because we feel unsafe here with the ramping up of sinophobia. Seems like most the people coming here are either naive or are debt ridden and want to escape for a "new" life like the people we saw in the first segment.
The family is literally escaping religious persecution for being Christian so it's definitely not the case for everyone, they have a legitimate reason to want to go to the US.
@@jackrlong That's the same excuse my grandfather used. Lmao please, chinese are smart people, they will see the anti China stuff and latch on to it. My grandfather was a Buddhist who feigned Christian and told us immigration the ccp persecuted him for being Christian (lie in an attempt to see if it'll help with his green card) and it worked lmao. We've been doing this for decades
As a Mexican American who his family migrated and did everything legally I have one thing to say I'm for migration just no illegal immigration. Can you Imagine buying entire Disneyland package with hotel and 5 days, but you see there is others who jump the gate and got their rooms for free and are able to cut in front of every line in the rides but you have to wait. Thats a small comparison of how it feels.
Their sponsors are in the USA which will facilitate them if they have entered the territory of the USA. What is the benefit of the sponsors is that they get permanent workers with low wages or workers without wages, they are only given a place to live and eat for free after that they are worked until they die, it is impossible for them to socialize with the people of the USA because they do not have official documents, they are imprisoned because they do not know that there is a crime against humanity, namely slavery, behind illegal immigrants there is human trafficking.
It's so heart breaking, I hope each and every soul safe travels. Every human should have a chance to live freely, work hard and be given the opportunity to prosper
World class documentary . Is heart broken to see what they have been through , and is sad that on the flip side, who are Americans are taking drugs become homeless etc and completely ruin their life.
In China everyone's dream is to be a millionaire, its not about freedom its about money. Most of them never ever paid any tax to the country, but all they want is free medical service free wife free big house and free benefit 😓 Thank you really good documentary
It's great journalism. Thank you to Wei Du and her team for making this possible! On a side note, the Chinese crossers kept on saying that the boat ride was dangerous while the local smuggler did it countless times. I have a bit of doubt whether this group of chinese crossers are resilient or not. Do they really think it's a walk in the park? 😂 Seriously.. if they are not willing to lose their life, better not do this line walk.
Even though I am against illegal immigration, I really admire the father in this documentary who is only wanting to give a better life to his daughter and for his family. I have to admire that.
@@ryanlake9722 That’s one of the reasons why I’m against illegal immigration. People are putting their children in terrible situations, but did you ever think that the father decided that taking the chance of dying for freedom was better than dying at the hands of your own country? Just saying.

Why is every other comment praising “Wei Du?” 🤷🏻 seems suspicious 🤨
that man at 37:20, there's nothing we can do to help him, solely bearing the sorrow and pain of losing the love ones, without knowing what lies ahead of the future
My heart melted when I saw that man, you could really feel his pain talking about the recent deaths of his entire family
THIS is an asylum case. Whereas the Chinese people shown on the documentary, I don’t fully get why they are making the whole worldwide trek. What is so terrible that they have to run away? I see some comments here that they are bad actors running from debt or crimes. Hmm… that doesn’t sound like asylum cases. That sounds like fugitives.
I wish the best for him
A very compelling, gripping documentary. Excellent story telling with a huge dose of nail biting and emotional moments. Well done !!
What an amazing documentary. Hats off to Wei Du and CNA, had heard a lot about Donkey routes but to see what the people really go through was an eye opening experience.
Kudos to the CNA team for this documentary. Outstanding!
Grass always seems greener on the other side, until you get there
sometimes it actually is greener pastures for these ppl
It seems greener until they encounter blatant racism. That's why a lot of Chinese went back to China after a few years in US - it is far far worse ...
This is the reason why we Chinese (Asian) Americans are so prosperous in the US, NOT by coming here illegally.
@@xiphoid2011 , Is it worth it to leave China behind? I'm asking this because I've seen so many videos of China thriving, and it's good for foreigners living there. I'm curious.
It's literally the difference between a dictatorial regime without freedom and a democracy with freedom. Depending on what you value, it might be worth taking the risk.
As singaporean, we are exposed to so many news outlets from western mainstream to independent to russian etc. I maybe biased but cna is really the best. No bs no propoganda just great journalism.
As Singaporean, this is totally an BS. There are flights from China to other countries in South America including Mexico. From there, they can take bus or other transportation to Mexican side of El Paso city. From there, they can walk right inside US. There are direct flights from China to Mexico. All these people fell for the scam.
@@wsmithe2209 you are absolutely right. Unless they cannot even get a mexican visa which is truly suspect. Its really unclear what the background of these people.
@wsmithe2209 Chinese citizens require a visa to go to Mexico. The people who are being smuggled are usually heavily in debt or unemployed and would struggle to get a Mexican visa. Ecuador is normally chosen as the starting point because it's visa free for Chinese citizens
@@calvinchow160 - Visa fee is nothing comapre to airfare, food and staying. Getting a visa to Mexico should not be a problem from China.
@@hartonolee - There are many Chinese setup shops selling goods in central America. Some are making it and some aren't. The ones that are not making it don't have enough money to fly back home. This is the way to go back home free.
I’ve watched all 3 parts. Thank you, CNA & Wei Du, for this enlightening and extremely sad documentary. What an excellent report! I’m looking forward to your follow-up report.
I had no idea this was CNA until I tried to find the next ep. This is high quality work!
Thanks Wei Du and CNA team for risking your lives for producing such real and unbiased documentary. Really eye opening, but yet sad at the same time listening to why they need to leave China. Given a choice, no one would risk their lives to leave their home country.

I had a classmate from Iraq back in college. His family fled to Armenia first then the US. Their family converted to Christianity secretly and they chose God instead of their homeland. We got talking because I brought pancit, which is a Filipino noodle dish with meat. I made it with cricket and crispy pork, so I was so sorry because I thought he couldn’t eat it. He said he was ok because he’s Christian mow. He took out the rosary he was wearing under his shirt and gladly ate. We’re lucky here in America that we have freedom of religion. Although flawed, because we’re not as tolerant to other religions such as Islam, we still respect their right to worship. I hope they can live peacefully now and pray in public as much as they want now. 😊
Amazing work! Kudos to the CNA team! Wishing the immigrants well ❤
This is an amazingly produced documentary. CNA you've outdone yourselves.

Wow definitely worth a award!! Excellent documentary. Brave reporter
The Best video I have seen about migrants so far, every time the Chinese dad cried it brought tears to my eyes. It shows how families are trying to get a better life and with the world being a mess in its entirety, there is nowhere else to go unless we could find another hospitable planet with welcoming inhabitants.

They seem too naive to the reality of life in the U.S as an illegal migrant
China wouldn't even waste time to have them back to punish if that's what you mean.
of course they are naive, remember they are christian
Every country is struggling so it’s citizens, so don’t ever think it would be better when you choose to run or leave your country
they are not running to leave their country but intentionally invading others
I think unless your life is already in danger (like in certain Latin American countries), it is simply not worth the risk.

wondering why they were robbed of everything but still have their phones with them ? Amazing documentary... I havent been hooked on a documentary for a very long time.... THIS IS REALLY REALLY GOOD
They only carry limited cash for their journey expenses. Most of assets are in WeChat Pay or Alipay phone app

I really hope the best for them
Thank you for telling the story in close up. I moved from Hong Kong to Canada 30 years ago but I am lucky that I got educated and was permitted to immigrate legally without the hardship and life threatening situations. ❤
Even the current wave of HK immigrants are so much more luckier than them.
Chinese from Hong Kong are much more affluent and highly educated than mainland China that they can immigrate easily.

this is nice. i thought it only takes 1hour documentary for this. watching it from TV
not knowing that there are part 2 and 3
After seeing the hardships of other groups , it feels the Chinese are jumping the line paying their way illegally entering the USA. They’re not running for hardships but believed in personally financial gain believed an unfortunate future of uncertainty!
They think they are better than other migrants from other eastern states like I absolutely believe that to be true!!
They didn’t film the Chinese who suffered on the journey. Many Chinese got kidnapped and killed by cartels.

Du Wei's documentaries are amazing
Such an amazing documentary. Feared for the reporters safety.
This is really a wake-up call for all of us to treasure and appreciate what we have...

In China everyone's dream is to be a millionaire, its not about freedom its about money.
Most of them never ever paid any tax to the country, but all they want is free medical service free wife free big house and free benefit 😓
Thank you really good documentary
then why you run a restaurant? not for money? who say everyone wants to be a millionaire? you are a joke.
