I know it's not a pretty picture necessarily a good 70% of the people in China don't have opportunities to get a decent education to move up in their world; what we see through the China lens and what I teach online are those that have the money to move up and get education. it's a rough road. As a Chinese-American who had the opportunity to be a digital nomad in Latin America, it's crazy to see all of these Chinese migrants as well. Anecdotally, my friends in Colombia told me that this is now a very lucrative business venture for the cartels - they've made peace and share the profits - and that the Colombian side of the Darien Gap is actually super safe as a result. However, the Panama side is still very dangerous, because the Colombian cartels don't share the profits with them.

This particular documentary is generally well done with little to no "propaganda", but if there were any "angle", as you put it, it would be to discourage Chinese Citizens from attempting to leave China and immigrate to America. Chinese Citizens in America would generally give America an advantage against the CCP in the same way that Millions of Americans in China would give America a potential advantage or edge against the CCP. The questions you are asking are too difficult to explain in a few sentences on UA-cam, as the problems in both countries are infinitely complex and interrelated.
I cried when they gave their testimony. They left their home country with such immense faith and gave up everything so that their daughter and they themselves could be with Christ. From there, they can take bus or other transportation to Mexican side of El Paso city. From there, they can walk right inside US. There are direct flights from China to Mexico. All these people fell for the scam.

They took the long hard route. Indians go to Canada as international students but get jobs, use food banks for the homeless. The Canadian government caves in to their protests to stay, work and claim permanent residence when they were suppose to leave after studies. Tens of thousands of Indians have done this in the past couple years. If they choose to go to the US, it's easier with a base in Canada. Some Canadians have noticed the substantial increase in the Indian population out of every other group and are miffed at their demands.
I had a classmate from Iraq back in college. His family fled to Armenia first then the US. Their family converted to Christianity secretly and they chose God instead of their homeland. We got talking because I brought pancit, which is a Filipino noodle dish with meat. I made it with cricket and crispy pork, so I was so sorry because I thought he couldn’t eat it. He said he was ok because he’s Christian mow. He took out the rosary he was wearing under his shirt and gladly ate. We’re lucky here in America that we have freedom of religion. Although flawed, because we’re not as tolerant to other religions such as Islam, we still respect their right to worship. I hope they can live peacefully now and pray in public as much as they want now. 😊

I'm a Shanghainese immigrant to US. Yes, the grass REALLY is greener in the US. But the big disclaimer is IF you come here legally and you are a good student. I came here as a top student. My wife is from GuangXi, and we were classmates in graduate school. We, like MOST chinese Americans are now living the American Dream. Keep in mind, most Chinese Americans are wealthier than even white americans. Most of us have university degrees, and 25% of us have masters/doctorates. This is the reason why we Chinese (Asian) Americans are so prosperous in the US, NOT by coming here illegally.

THIS is an asylum case. Whereas the Chinese people shown on the documentary, I don’t fully get why they are making the whole worldwide trek. What is so terrible that they have to run away? I see some comments here that they are bad actors running from debt or crimes. Hmm… that doesn’t sound like asylum cases. That sounds like fugitives.

@@mingzmings88 as an American I'll agree. Chinese out of all groups have the ability to live in any circumstance because Chinese eat bitter. That's why there's a Chinatown in every city of the world no matter how poor. Unfortunately when these Chinese reach the US they'll find it's no easier than back in China. The pay is high but the living expenses are higher. Many Americans have to live on credit debt just to get by. The Chinese couple in Monterey Park in this clip complained that the cost of groceries were so high but if the set foot outside the Chinese communities they'll find the regular supermarket prices are even higher. Like that one guy said maybe half go back to China. The rest will live lives of toil. In past generations the Chinese parents accept this in exchange for their children being well educated in the US and live an elevated life but in this new age that's no longer a guarantee as many American college graduates struggle to find good paying jobs upon graduation.

But there's a good chance the Chinese embassy wouldn't even give these people the papers to be able to return to China by plane. This means for many of these people the CCP views them as better for Chinese society to be rid of them for whatever reasons. China wouldn't even waste time to have them back to punish if that's what you mean.

The Chinese in the story clearly are pretty middle class and probably had a good life in China. Not sure why they choose to come to USA. It’s very different situation from the South American countries where the poverty and violence is very high. So I don’t understand why they are coming here . They clearly had a good life in China
Thank you for producing this authentic documentary. Those who still attempt to walk the line should really think twice. It is not worth their lives. No matter how hard they are in China, they still have second/third chances to improve their life quality.
It seems to me like the Chinese migrants doing this trek are not in the same precarious situation that the Haitian/South American migrants are in. It seems to be that they're being intentionally mislead into thinking there is something for them in the U.S that they can't find in China, and as they arrive they are finding out they made a mistake.
Like that one family, they think the US is paved with gold. Meanwhile my Chinese family is thinking of leaving the US to go to China just because we feel unsafe here with the ramping up of sinophobia. Seems like most the people coming here are either naive or are debt ridden and want to escape for a "new" life like the people we saw in the first segment.

What is the benefit of the sponsors is that they get permanent workers with low wages or workers without wages, they are only given a place to live and eat for free after that they are worked until they die, it is impossible for them to socialize with the people of the USA because they do not have official documents, they are imprisoned because they do not know that there is a crime against humanity, namely slavery, behind illegal immigrants there is human trafficking.

Dulu tahun 2005 (umur 18 thn) saya ikut undian green card dan lolos tapi saya waktu itu galau banget, di satu sisi pengin banget jadi warga U.S karena saya dari keluarga miskin tapi di sisi lain saya belum siap secara mental. Modal saya waktu itu cuma satu: bisa bahasa inggris. Akhirnya saya pun gagal ke Amerika. 3 tahun berselang saya nyaris merantau ke Canada, tapi akhirnya gagal juga. Andaikan dulu saya ambil kesempatan jadi U.S citizen mungkin nasib saya jauh lbh baik dan bisa membantu saudara dan keluarga. Sekarang hidup di Indo hanya cukup buat survive, hanya sedikit sisa utk ditabung, mau bangun rumah sederhana saja penuh perjuangan.

I don't understand some of the criticisms directed at Chinese illegal immigrants. In my view, most of them are not criminals; they have lived quietly for decades and have taken the risk of coming to the US, hoping for a new life, even if that freedom might not fully exist.

Not really, Chinese immigrants in USA* are well connected. The central American and African immigrants go into shelters when they come in but when the Chinese immigrants come they have someone to pick them up already (family, church members, business contacts etc) to help them get situated.

This particular documentary is generally well done with little to no "propaganda", but if there were any "angle", as you put it, it would be to discourage Chinese Citizens from attempting to leave China and immigrate to America. Chinese Citizens in America would generally give America an advantage against the CCP in the same way that Millions of Americans in China would give America a potential advantage or edge against the CCP. The questions you are asking are too difficult to explain in a few sentences on UA-cam, as the problems in both countries are infinitely complex and interrelated.

As Singaporean, this is totally an BS. There are flights from China to other countries in South America including Mexico. From there, they can take bus or other transportation to Mexican side of El Paso city. From there, they can walk right inside US. There are direct flights from China to Mexico. All these people fell for the scam.

@wsmithe2209 Chinese citizens require a visa to go to Mexico. The people who are being smuggled are usually heavily in debt or unemployed and would struggle to get a Mexican visa. Ecuador is normally chosen as the starting point because it's visa free for Chinese citizens

They took the long hard route. Indians go to Canada as international students but get jobs, use food banks for the homeless. The Canadian government caves in to their protests to stay, work and claim permanent residence when they were suppose to leave after studies. Tens of thousands of Indians have done this in the past couple years. If they choose to go to the US, it's easier with a base in Canada. Some Canadians have noticed the substantial increase in the Indian population out of every other group and are miffed at their demands.

I had a classmate from Iraq back in college. His family fled to Armenia first then the US. Their family converted to Christianity secretly and they chose God instead of their homeland. We got talking because I brought pancit, which is a Filipino noodle dish with meat. I made it with cricket and crispy pork, so I was so sorry because I thought he couldn’t eat it. He said he was ok because he’s Christian mow. He took out the rosary he was wearing under his shirt and gladly ate. We’re lucky here in America that we have freedom of religion. Although flawed, because we’re not as tolerant to other religions such as Islam, we still respect their right to worship. I hope they can live peacefully now and pray in public as much as they want now. 😊

I'm a Shanghainese immigrant to US. Yes, the grass REALLY is greener in the US. But the big disclaimer is IF you come here legally and you are a good student. I came here as a top student. My wife is from GuangXi, and we were classmates in graduate school. We, like MOST chinese Americans are now living the American Dream. Keep in mind, most Chinese Americans are wealthier than even white americans. Most of us have university degrees, and 25% of us have masters/doctorates. This is the reason why we Chinese (Asian) Americans are so prosperous in the US, NOT by coming here illegally.

@@mingzmings88 as an American I'll agree. Chinese out of all groups have the ability to live in any circumstance because Chinese eat bitter. That's why there's a Chinatown in every city of the world no matter how poor. Unfortunately when these Chinese reach the US they'll find it's no easier than back in China. The pay is high but the living expenses are higher. Many Americans have to live on credit debt just to get by. The Chinese couple in Monterey Park in this clip complained that the cost of groceries were so high but if the set foot outside the Chinese communities they'll find the regular supermarket prices are even higher. Like that one guy said maybe half go back to China. The rest will live lives of toil. In past generations the Chinese parents accept this in exchange for their children being well educated in the US and live an elevated life but in this new age that's no longer a guarantee as many American college graduates struggle to find good paying jobs upon graduation.
@@mingzmings88 for you the US costs of living are not bad because it's similar to Singapore. San Francisco is a bit higher than SG but in Las Vegas Arizona Dallas it should be cheaper than SG. For mainland Chinese it's a different story like you said especially these migrant worker types who live in maybe 3rd tier Chinese cities US cities will be a price shock.

In this episode where the one guy went to the immigration lawyer she said if he stays there's a chance that if he wants to stay he won't get a green card or permanent residency status and he can only have working rights and will report to the Chinese embassy. But there's a good chance the Chinese embassy wouldn't even give these people the papers to be able to return to China by plane. This means for many of these people the CCP views them as better for Chinese society to be rid of them for whatever reasons. China wouldn't even waste time to have them back to punish if that's what you mean.

The Chinese in the story clearly are pretty middle class and probably had a good life in China. Not sure why they choose to come to USA. It’s very different situation from the South American countries where the poverty and violence is very high. So I don’t understand why they are coming here . They clearly had a good life in China

It seems to me like the Chinese migrants doing this trek are not in the same precarious situation that the Haitian/South American migrants are in. It seems to be that they're being intentionally mislead into thinking there is something for them in the U.S that they can't find in China, and as they arrive they are finding out they made a mistake.
Like that one family, they think the US is paved with gold. Meanwhile my Chinese family is thinking of leaving the US to go to China just because we feel unsafe here with the ramping up of sinophobia.

Dulu tahun 2005 (umur 18 thn) saya ikut undian green card dan lolos tapi saya waktu itu galau banget, di satu sisi pengin banget jadi warga U.S karena saya dari keluarga miskin tapi di sisi lain saya belum siap secara mental. Modal saya waktu itu cuma satu: bisa bahasa inggris. Akhirnya saya pun gagal ke Amerika. 3 tahun berselang saya nyaris merantau ke Canada, tapi akhirnya gagal juga. Andaikan dulu saya ambil kesempatan jadi U.S citizen mungkin nasib saya jauh lbh baik dan bisa membantu saudara dan keluarga. Sekarang hidup di Indo hanya cukup buat survive, hanya sedikit sisa utk ditabung, mau bangun rumah sederhana saja penuh perjuangan.

They're going to be very disappointed when they arrive in America. The systematic racism, lack of job opportunities, and politics will make one wonder whether it's truly worth it to even take such a risk.
Not really, Chinese immigrants in USA* are well connected. The central American and African immigrants go into shelters when they come in but when the Chinese immigrants come they have someone to pick them up already (family, church members, business contacts etc) to help them get situated.

If America was that racist, they would never be allowed to enter this way. Btw, china would never allow anyone to violate its borders like this, and Chinese fully support it.

Even though I am against illegal immigration, I really admire the father in this documentary who is only wanting to give a better life to his daughter and for his family. I have to admire that.
Have you ever thought this father just add his own thought on his daughter and let his daughter in big danger, how selfish!
@@ryanlake9722 That’s one of the reasons why I’m against illegal immigration. People are putting their children in terrible situations, but did you ever think that the father decided that taking the chance of dying for freedom was better than dying at the hands of your own country? Just saying.
@@chopper5245 Based on my travel experiences, I don't think China is as terrifying as he says. This father has an overly idealized view of America; he thinks the land is paved with gold and that people can prosper without working hard. Sadly, given his current abilities, I believe his life in America may turn out to be worse than it would be in China.

What an amazing documentary. Hats off to Wei Du and CNA, had heard a lot about Donkey routes but to see what the people really go through was an eye opening experience.
Once they lived the American dream in the US they will soon realise China is probably better…grass is always greener on the other side once you are actually on that side…
Let them go. It's great that they leave. Anyone is not happy in their own motherland, just go. Don't think of any excuse. When they arrive in U.S.A, they will find out what is the meaning of safety, stability, or what is "freedom" really meaning. More of them leave, China will be better off.

This family started with their Christian belief, so when they go to the USA, they can apply for religious asylum. I have not heard about underground church school in China
There are at least 100 Chinese church school.They are all advocate for home schooling.But according to the Chinese law.It's illegal.I used to work in a big Church school in Zhengzhou.Henan province.But it was shut down at 2022.I went to Australia after that crackdown😭

We don't care if they're hard working or not. They came in illegally. And they had debts back in China that they're running away from. Already showing dishonesty about their arrival.

Wei du is so calm , this documentary is difficult , balanced and dangerous
World class documentary . Is heart broken to see what they have been through , and is sad that on the flip side, who are Americans are taking drugs become homeless etc and completely ruin their life.

I really like the way showed the stories at both ends almost at the same time.

I have a question. If the family were robbed, strip searched, so how come they still have mobile phones to contact Du Wei? How come they still have money left for the remaining ride?
Do you realize they were committing a crime along the way? Are you complaining how difficult their criminal process is.
