As a Taiwanese who experienced the era of Wang. I can tell you that Wang is truly a legend in Taiwan. Some fun facts abt how do we Taiwanese love him: 1. A lot of Taiwanese stayed up just to see his live games. (I was in my 8th and 9th grade, and yes, I stayed up to see his games, too.) 2. If he got a won, next day he'd get the whole front page on our local newspaper just to celebrate. 3. Even some local venders of breakfast restaurants (most of them didn't even see many ball games before Wang's era) knew the whole Yankee lineup at the time. 4. He is a coach in one of our pro league team now, and he is also the bullpen coach in our national team this year. Fans who go to stadium to watch the games ask him for a autograph more then players.
Chien-ming Wang was one of the reasons I got into baseball as a kid. Growing up a Chinese-American Yankees fan it was so awesome and special to see a Taiwanese player dominate the league. I still have my jersey as a kid somewhere in storage! Btw: someone from Taiwan is Taiwanese, not Thai. Love the videos!
@@marxwasright25 we're all Taiwanese now, stop calling us Chinese, you sound like Russians who try to convince the world that Ukrainians are also Russians. We are not Chinese.
Taiwanese here, always appreciate seeing Wang getting some love. Crazy to think he was basically the Yankees' ace during his tenure. I was in 8th grade when Wang's freak baserunning injury happened and boy, it was such a disappointing blow especially in light of such a great start to '08 (record of 8-2 as shown). The hamstring injury he suffered as a Nat was during a spring training game - against the Yankees.
Such a sad ending. He was one of the best pitchers in the hardest division to be a pitcher. Horrible that his career essentially ended because MLB made pitchers unused to running the base, run the bases. Perhaps the worst effect of inter league play, followed by how inter league completely ruined the special nature of the world series being between two teams who hadn't faced each other. I remember being disappointed that the Subway Series in 2000 was watered down because the teams had played speech other like 6 times already that season. Sorry for the tangent, but Chien Ming Wang always makes me think of how inter league baseball ruined his career and how much I still dislike it.
He was one of my favorite players growing up. I still talk about that Houston game often. I actually never realized he had worked his all the way back and pitched for KC. Makes his story all that much more impressive. Great video.
Great video! Wang made his way back to the majors by pitching 6 scoreless innings against the Japanese all-star team in the 2013 world baseball classics. That game was as memorable as his back-to-back 19-win seasons.
These stories of players who work their way back after seeming down and out are awesome. Wang was such a unique pitcher that was a tiny bit before my time (I got into baseball while he was starting to get hurt/decline a bit), but to have a season where he was the bWAR leader on a team like the Yankees is insanely impressive. Also, can I say I love that the music used in this video is all MLB Power Pros music? I noticed it right at the end; fantastic choice.
Great video. I loved Wang. Everything about him was so unconventional compared to other successful MLB starting pitchers but I was the most confident when he was on the hill. I cannot express how frustrating Randy Johnson was. His fist season was ok but not the dominant 5X cy young winner we thought we were getting. His 2nd season w/ the Yankees would've been a disaster if the Yankees didn't score 9 runs a game during his starts. This guy was supposed to be an ace and he was giving up 5 runs, 4 walks and 3Ks in 5 innings. The Yankees were such a power house offensively that season Johnson ended up with 17 wins despite having a 5.00 ERA.
I remember when you had like 4k subs JollyOlive, you're getting bigger, keep it up. Bet you hit 100k by the end of the year if you keep it up. He injured his foot running the bases in a game against a national league team where no DH's were used -- and he was never the same - he had many many injuries
Wasn’t that game in Houston too, before they left the NL? They’ve been screwing the Yankees since 2008, apparently 😂 Edit: I just remembered the Astros no-hit the Yankees in 2003, I believe. So it’s been happening for 20 years.
Great vid bro. Wang is a great story. U should do Alfonso Soriano. Forgotten legendary combo of power n speed, Hank Aaron said he was the MLBer most like him at one point. Also only clean member of the 40/40 Club. Worth while story.
As a Mets fan, Wang’s back-to-back 19-win seasons are always at the back of my mind and I don’t know why. After this video, I think it might be that 10-strikeout performance. Great video!
Speaking of Asian born players, Chan Ho Park was one of first South Korean players in the MLB. He was good with the Dodgers before falling to shit in Texas. You should do a video on him.
Vlad hit two grand slams off of him in a single inning I think. Loved him at Hanwha at his retirement season, where nearly every hitter would take the time to take off their helmets and bow before standing in the box to pay respects for a retiring korean legend. As a South Korean baseball announcer, he talks so fucking much about his time in LA its actually incredibly humanizing. His caster partner cant even get a word in about the game saving double play because Park is too busy talking about his problems developing pitcher catcher relationships in Los Angeles stemming from a curve ball in the dirt that got past the catcher 2 innings ago. Really funny guy, became a legendary meme in the KBO.
In 2006, I remembered how much Taiwanese people were talking about Chien-ming Wang. Endless news coverage about Wang's and Yankees' season, and his name showed up in every TV show. My teacher allowed us to turn on the TV when Wang took the mound. How it that even possible lol.
Great video Jolly Olive! If we’re talking about Asian players, can you please do Ichiro? I’m a die hard Mariners fan and was 8 years old during his rookie season. So I had him for my entire childhood before he went to the Yankees. I was fortunate enough to go to all 3 games for his Mariners hall of fame induction. I definitely shed a tear during his speech and highlight reel as well haha. Ichiro means so much to the city of Seattle and more than likely would have had over 4,000 hits if he came to the MLB at 21 instead of 27
I love stories about the sinker. I like showing them to Jays fans..as this is their game plan. The blue Jays have spent the last 2 years hoarding GB pitchers (gausman, bassitt, pop, kikuchi, white, swanson). I noticed that they intended to get more groundballs but I should have seen the dimension changes coming as well. Kirk and Vladdy faced nothing but sinking pitches in the second half and it crippled them (Vlad with just too many GBs and DPs).. it's a good approach...it clearly works

Chien Ming Wang was so much fun to watch. He pitched most games effortlessly and just went and got outs. He didn't do any fancy arm slots or pitches, he didn't dominate anyone, he just got outs. A true rarity.
