Those early 2010s Brewers had such an interesting group of players personality wise and were really fun to watch on the field. Gomez, Nyjer Morgan, Greinke, K-Rod, Braun, Prince Fielder etc. made them really memorable (or more specifically infamous in some cases) for me
I’ve always been a Yankees fan I Go to opening every year through & Through but those Brewers w All them AND CC made me a Fan of the brew Crew & Mike Cameron to
I credit Carlos with completely changing my opinion on “showboating” players. It’s 2014: Brewers vs Mets. Miller Park. Carlos comes to the plate in a tie game, I wanna say 5th or 7th inning. I didn’t like Carlos, I’ve always been kind of an old soul for a kid (15) at that time. He hits a CLUTCH home run to put them ahead with a huge momentum shifting blast. The crowd goes apeshit crazy cheering their heads off and their hearts out. I see that grin of his as he pimps out the celebration as he rounds the bases, and gave me a memory I will never forget
He was my favorite twin for the longest time. Was definitely sad when he left. He was so much fun to watch. I was at game 163 against the tigers. Easily one of my favorite sports memories
Love this video’s direction. Gomez was a such a burning star when on the field, and this video really captured that energy. Question for ya: Whatever happened to Mike Tauchman and why did he have a crazy 2018 season (over 4.0 WAR in 87 games?) Keep up the great work my man!
I loved seeing him in Appleton with the timber rattlers and swinging out of his helmet with the Brewers. He brought a new level of passion. It reminds me of Daniel Vogelbach.
My favorite moment as a Twins fan was the 2009 game 163 tiebreaker where Alexi Casilla got the game winning hit and scored Carlos Gomez. I was born in 1995 so that game in 2009 was my World Series. The image of Gomez diving into home in the bottom of the 12th, leaping up, and slamming his helmet on the ground is seared into my brain, it was the loudest I ever heard the Metrodome get besides what I saw on my mom's highlight tapes from the 1987 and 1991 World Series. I was already a fan of Gomez before this moment, but I just remember being so sad when we traded him, a lot of it was because he is tied to my best experience as a Twins fan. The pain was lessened because he went to Milwaukee so I knew I'd see him play my team twice a year and then see him again whenever I visited my relatives in Wisconsin. He is definitely one of those players where I was sad to see him go, but happy to see him find his place.
Glad to be a new sub, Jolly! I love these types of videos. Player profiles are always fascinating to me. Even though I don't even watch any MLB. People like you present the stuff in an easily digestible way, and an entertaining way too.
as a kid who watched him play on tv all the time he quickly became my favorite player that wasn’t on the team i support and this is still the case today, nobody will ever come close to him for me
Lifelong Brewers fan here. Great video! Surprised, however, that you didn't mention CarGo scoring the winning run against the DBacks in the 2011 NLDS game 5, our first playoff series win since '82!
I want to forget that trade happened as an Astros fan. Every piece we traded away panned out, in return we got a snitch and a guy who would rather fall down on his ass than hustle in an ALDS elimination game
i love him as a player and person so much he doesnt take shit from ppl one of the few in the earlier 2010s to not be a rock that can move athletically and he was really good for a few seasons some of those game saving home run robberies are one of my favorite highlight plays of any player
As a Mets fan, I was very excited about Gomez's appearance and looked forward to seeing him perform at the Mets as he did in the Brewers. He could have been my favorite player, but things didn't go that way.
One thing about Cargo, even total non baseball fans had heard of him, even if they couldn’t pick his face out or a lineup. His name recognition was absolutely top tier, and that really speaks to how much fun he played the game with.
@@OccasionalNASCARRaces From South Florida, never watched a baseball game before watching Texas vs San Fran in the WS, and the only two players I could make were Roy Halladay, and Carlos Gomez.
I loved watching Carlos when I was growing up. He was always one of my favorite Brewers and I would absolutely love to see him get a card in MLB the Show sometime soon :)
hes one of those guys that feels forgotten about because he showed up before the league was ready for that kind of player. had he come up in today's home run focused environment i think hed have a better overall career instead of the relatively brief run he actually got as a star
Another w jolly olive vid, on a completely seperate note, JD Davis and Austin Riley's baseball savant pages are almost exactly the same, and JD is the most underrated player in baseball
His time in Minnesota is spot on. This is a guy who had a swing geared for power but they actively tried to make him hit groundballs and use his speed. That was the same ballclub that hated strikeout pitchers because they cost more money to retain. They were all sorts of bad back then.
They also told David Ortiz to hit a groundball to the right side with RISP instead of, you know, knocking them in. The Twins were so Mickey Mouse I wonder how they ever managed to make the playoffs to get rinsed by the Yankees.
I genuinely never understood the dislike he got. Even by 2014 standards, he really wasn't THAT controversial. And by around 2019/20 he wouldn't have even stood out in MLB. But the bigger thing is that unlike most other players with that sort of controversial "attitude", he was actually consistently great. He wasn't hitting 2 home runs all year and acting like he was a big shot or something. He wasn't missing 100+ games a year with injury. He was giving 650 PAs of elite, 5 tool production each year of his peak. I could easily see why a player who sucked acting like Gomez would rub some the wrong way, but when you are a superstar you kinda are allowed to act like you own the place. At least more than the average player. Also always seemed like a pretty cool dude off the field too
I always mixed up Carlos Gomez and Carlos Gonzalez. But that's a guy who was also incredible with the Rockies, but dropped off the face of the planet overnight.
Both Cargos indeed...as a Rockies fan Gonzalez didn't have the longest career but for most of 10 years he was incredible at the plate and with his gold glove in right!
I once saw Gomez playing in a minor league game after his MLB career was over. He drives a ball deep to left center and goes crazy: 10 foot bat flip, shouting, pounding his chest, strutting to first base... and then turning his dumb ass around when the ball was caught a solid 15 feet in front of the wall.
We all owe CarGo an apology. One of the most important players of the pre-let them play era. Him refusing to confirm his personality to the fun police of the time really got that movement off the ground
shit thats so awesome that he got a gold glove he totally deserved one....i liked him for that one season he was on the mets. i said to myself "the mets gotta trade him now or there gonna end up keeping him" and thats what they did. and im glad they did but still he was a good player i could always tell.
I fucking hate the bat flip/posing after homers aspect of baseball. I don't mind watching how far your dinger goes as you're trotting toward first, but I can't stand throwing your bat and/or standing in the box and watching the ball leave the park. Especially when the jackass didn't even hit the ball far enough to leave the park and it ends up hitting the wall, or worse, gets caught. It happened just last week with my favorite player Salvador Perez of my hometown and favorite (yet absolutely awful) Kansas City Royals. He show boated and watched the ball instead of hustling to first and ended up with an RBI single that hit off the top of the wall 380 feet away from home plate. I don't care who you are, if I'm a manager and a player does that on my team--cracks one off the top of the wall and doesn't end up on second or third for no other reason than he wanted to look cool and not run after showing off his whopping warning track power--well your ass is sitting on the bench the rest of the game, if not the next game, too.
Kinda feel bad for Gomez, he was one of those young players who wasn't being utilized or trained right. The Mets and Twins probably thought of him as a future lead off man or roll player, not as the 5-Tool All-Star he would become. If they looked at him differently I wonder if he would have exploded onto the scene at a younger age.
As a brewers fan I couldn’t stand his plate approach. One of the fastest guys in baseball, but let’s swing so hard for the fences he’s constantly falling over. I kept saying if he’d just make contact or drop a bunt, steal second, and it’s essentially a double.
i cant believe you just kinda glazed over his 2016.... He was HORRIBLE with the Astros... then comes to texas late, and completely redeemed himself there.. he was a big part of the rangers 2016 lineup... in 85 games with houston, he hit .210, with 5 HR, 29 RBI, and an OPS+ of 65...(OUCH)... however, *in* *only* *33* *games* *with* *the* *Rangers* , he hit .285, 8 HR, 24 RBI, and an OPS+ of 134!! (highest of his career) IN ALMOST ONE THIRD OF THE GAMES!!! He also had a decent 2017, and the year and a half he spent with the Rangers, he had the second best numbers with any team, by a lot.
