I think Woolsey did a great job at localization. Certain things were altered, usually to conform to NOA censorship standards, and I think that he did the best that he could given the short deadline, and the ever present problem of cutting down the script to still fit on the cartridge when converted to English which requires more space to say the same things. The man is a legend. People often cite Secret of Mana as an example of bad translation, but with the short time given and the cartridge space limitations (the game was originally being developed for CD and had to be heavily cut down to fit on a cartridge when that fell through, and you can definitely feel that later in the game where it is obvious things had to be rushed and condensed, and then the localization itself had to undergo a similar process) it is a miracle that we got what we did. Sure, he took some liberties, but I quite enjoyed them. It's funny how Frog from Chrono Trigger talks in a "ye olde" type of way even though no one else from the same time period talks that way. If you notice, in the flashbacks of when he was still human he talked like everyone else. It makes me wonder then if his manner of speaking, though an artifact of the localization at the end of the day, was caused by the curse that turned him into a frog, or if it is something he picked up for reasons unknown. It helps him stand out more distinctly in a game where so much is conveyed through text and limited animations, so I don't think taking liberties like that is always a bad thing, especially when in English the process of giving a character a different tone or manner of speaking is different than in other languages. That's one reason I prefer the original SNES script. Here's to you, Woolsey, and all of your immortal Woolseyisms.
Also, I imagine the whole Sim City idea could work for a kind of pseudo-sequel that takes place after the ending and the goal is to rebuild the world to its former glory and beyond. Although magic has disappeared from the world, there would still be powerful beasts to make things difficult. It could be a fun game, but knowing how many mobile games there are about building cities or whatever that are marred by ridiculously long real time waiting that you have to pay real money if you want to speed up, only being able to work on one structure at a time unless you pay more money, and other microtransactions, paired with the knowledge that Square Enix is not afraid to make Final Fantasy mobile games built around popular micro transaction systems like real time waiting and gacha mechanics, and suddenly this idea that sounds like it could have been fun if it was made in the '90s or '00s suddenly sounds less appealing

Shadow is the one who tries to stop Kefka on the floating continent, and after Kefka finally dies Shadow knows his job is done so he goes to rest on the collapsing tower.

FF3/6 is my favorite game of all time! I can only hope for a proper remake, that does justice to the original! That said, I wish that they had kept the feature where Strago directs the building of a town! It's have been so cool to have the characters have a base of sorts, besides the airships! And for the player to get at least some control over things such as the looks and layout of the town! As well as the people that are invited/approved to live there! Because FF6 has such a balanced cast of characters and no definitive main, it makes it easy to create an OC that doesn't feel like an imposter. The only rule is, your character also can't be the main lead; they have to mesh well with the existing cast.
In the live stream like a month ago, you promised me a cool city-building-related fact about FF6 and you delivered. Man I wish that ended up in the game. I love city-building mechanics in RPGS. *cough*BreathOfFire*cough*
Before I watch this I want to say I had to beat this game well over 45 times often to get sprites from specific scenes that just weren't readily available for flash animations I was making as a kid. I feel like I should know everything, but if I don't I will salute you.
Wow! Fantastic! One of my favorite games, and I didn't know these facts! I only knew about the terra-garbage moment, the 1 year development, and cid-airship moment. You only get this kind of content in the returner's hideout!
Re: Your wild theory about Gogo being Relm's mother, I more subscribe to the theory that Gogo is Rachel. That one's been around since the '90s, and the more you look into it, the more the pieces all fall into place.
As some one who grew up in the UseNet era back in the day it's so interesting to see the shift in Woolsey the past few years. Guy was enemy number one on alt.games.final-fantasy and even rec.arts.anime news groups. It's seems like now that all us Final Fantasy fans are turning into old folks and realizing the job that he had on his plate, what he had to do to get things done and provide for his family, we all sort of respect the man for what he was able to accomplish and do. Guy was pushing him self to 1000 for a pay check with next to impossible goals.
You’re 100% right. Early on there was a pitchfork hatred for him but it’s all flipped now and I would love it if he started a Q and A series answering the questions of us old RPG fans!
Fun facts! Love FFVI, been my favorite since I was a kid and first played it as FFIII on SNES in the 90s. Not just my all time favorite final fantasy game, but one of my top 3 games of all time.
I thought the city sim was supposed to be apart of the sequel. I could be wrong since, I only heard that fact once. Nice list. Also, it did set Celes up quite well as the spy. The side conversation while going up to protect the esper, some of the dialogue the Emperor and Kefka have at the dinner and on the floating continent. It was a good story.
It would have been pretty cool if Terra was actually Locke's rival while still being the badass magical girl that she is. Like if they shared a love interest or some treasure hunting goal.
When I tried it in editing, because the quality of the source material is so rough (it was 360p and I upscaled it to 480), it wasn't a very clear image of Relm, unfortunately.
I always thought the nickle line was weird since.... you know Gil has no denominations as far as I know. Idk maybe it's just me but it's a weird disconnect
It’s also insanely harsh and violent when pitted up against Nintendo’s ‘family friendly’ policies at the time. Can’t show a butt on screen, but THAT? Eh it’s fine
@The Returners' Hideout lol yea, that's true too. I believe it's not true, especially when you get to know him, but it is an official in game rumor that possibly slipped through in the translation crunch.
Final Fantasy VI also has some extra slots for characters in it that are unused in its code. Maybe some of the artwork characters could have ended up being one of the party members. Some rom hacks even uses them to add custom playable characters to the game. The only thing from those character slots that the source actually let you know, is their names.
Video idea: talk about box cover art for the games and how they connect to the story. I remember as a kid going to rent a video game, y'all remember that?, and all I had to go on to pick a game was the box art and a couple pics on the back. Sometimes you get a winner sometimes you didn't. Just thought it would be a neat idea for you
Character development for FF6 was not a flaw. Every character with the exception of Umaro and Gogo have a story arc devoted to them, even mog has a little development despite the fact he was an optional character. FF6 also gave its characters closure to their stories something no other FF does as well. It's one of the reasons why it's the most acclaimed game in the series.
Wow! Here I think I know everything there is to know about my favorite game and you continue to surprise me. That's some amazing information! I didn't know any of that.
It's really weird because FF6 was the first FF to not have a Mr. Poofy Hair protagonist, and yet Terra's male counterpart is a straight up Mr. Poofy Hair. I'm glad they went with something a bit more specific for this game.
Fun fact - that iconic suicide attempt when you fail to save cids life? You actually can save his life. It's hard, you have to give him nothing but the best fish, but he can live, and you can visit him later too.
"during the ending CG cut scene...that plays during the ending" not the ending scene that plays during the start? :P hehe, I make the same kind of embellishes in my videos sometimes too, it kind of just happens but it works. GREAT job on this video!
Ditto! FF6 is also my favorite one! And yeah, admittedly Woolsey made some, at best questionable translation choices... but son of a submariner, the entire fandom had a conniption when they "corrected" his most well known lines.
Not quite. They finished way ahead of schedule, with them planning on the Floating Continent as the final dungeon, but instead of just turning it in, they decided to spend the extra time to change the original ending and expand the game further, giving us the entire World of Ruin plot!
The family is reunited, and it’s all thanks to you! Although.. I am curious as to what the dynamics of that party would be through the second half of the game in terms of battling! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Celes being a spy would explain why an augmented magic-using general was being pushed around by common soldiers. OTOH they were making a big show of hurting her when nobody was watching, and hid her in a basement instead of putting her in a path to meet the Returners. So eh.
@@NAzo. lol. she' was spy cuz she infiltrated the group through nefarious means. the end. did she come through in the end? nope. she flipped and joined your group. still means she was a spy.
Celes wasn't a spy she was under posthypnotic suggestions, she's not evil. She just wanted to pretend to be and when she realizes she cares about her new friends the world ends that's why the over world song is titled "Searching For Friends" 😊
Had to pause the vid not even 20 seconds in lol. It's not a huge deal, but the >CHARACTER< in FFVII is pronounced, Kate Sith, unless this changes in the remake. You do have a point about the creature Cait SIth though, and I can't really speak for their appearance in other FFs, but for FFVII, its Kate SIth lol (unless this changes in the remake)
Bro I love your content so much and I will watch every video, but can I give a suggestion? Your videos need an intro and an outro, even short ones. Especially at the end, so many of them just end abruptly and as a longtime UA-cam watcher, it can be a little jarring. Plus at the end is when you can toss in your plugs, tell people how to buy your merch etc. Just a friendly tip from one of your biggest fans. Love the content.
Thanks so much, my friend!! You’re far too nice! I’ll definitely give it some thought, I’m still experimenting with what works and what doesn’t and I’m always open to suggestions! Thanks for commenting!
Here's one for ya: FF6 Moogles are blind. Cave dwelling creatures often lose their eyesight, these Moogles are always squinting. Furthermore, when Mog (or any moogle) opens his eyes in shock, you can get a good look at their very big eyes and you can see that their pupils are completely white. This means little to no light is making it to his retinas. So how are they able to walk around as though they can see? Their squinty eyes are not the only change from FF5 to FF6: they also gained that adorable pom-pom antenna. This is why Mog hates it getting touched (as noted in FF Ultimania): you're practically poking the thing he uses to see!
I do like Amano's artwork, but something I've always hated is the disconnect between the in-game sprites for character designs, the artwork, and also the in-game portraits! Locke for example, his in-game sprite has a headband like the artwork and his portrait has a full head-covering bandana. Celes, like Terra, wears a leotard with pauldrons in the sprite, but the artwork has her with a completely different outfit. She also has a headband in her sprite that's blue and goes across her whole head, but in the portrait and the artwork, it's like a little back barrette thing? Why are the designs so inconsistent, even in later versions, lol. I will say, I do prefer the sprite designs over both the portrait and the artwork, for all the FFs with this problem, cause even though I like Amano's overall artstyle, the character designs all blend into each other due to the sort of same face and hair syndrome, lol.
1:18 where is Gau in the concept art? I initially thought he was the one crouching down in the lower left corner but then thought that might be male Terra's esper form
Doesn’t Celes tell the party that she’s a spy while at the Magitek Factory? I remember being really confused at that part because it didn’t really affect the story whatsoever, but then again, that was more than 20 years ago.
I'm not certain on this but I think it was a mistranslation, that celes admits she was working for the empire but she didn't want to be their pawn basically. It's in the GBA port a little more, but on the SNES it's quite literally summarized with her saying "Locke..." And that's it
Whelp, I knew about the Cait Sith thing, but that doesn't count. Also, did you skip number 6? or was the Sim City thing suppose to be #6? Because if that's the case 3/6 for me, I knew about the Sim City thing, Final Fantasy Union did a video about it. I also knew the Cid thing, and the small dev team but not all the details. honestly though, am I really that high? because number 5 is the last one you did. right?
at 1:50 that weird thing that you said who is this, I presume it's Mog.. or the original concept of it.. and I may be wrong.. but I count 13 characters (if we exclude Strago's old woman counterpart) and since I doubt one of the 2 World of Ruin only recruitable characters (Umaro and Gogo) is that girl behind the "male version of Terra" like you called him.. I'm pretty sure there's something else about that unknown guy in the middle and that the girl behind the dude is Terra. Oh and before anyone answer me, I know Umaro and Gogo are not the ONLY recruitable characters in the WoR, I meant recruitable for the first time possible, and yes, for those who don't know it.. you can get Mog in World of Balance..
Actually 1:17 in the bottom middle (under the old lady) looks a lot more like mog. I think the one he mentions _is_ umaro. Or maybe the imp? Though I feel like it goes moogle, Imp, chocobo (I just feel like that makes the most sense) in the bottom there, which lends itself toward the one in question being umaro and not the imp. Also I think the girl behind the center guy is celes, I feel like it looks like other art I've seen of celes especially with that sword. I wanna know who the one on the far lower right is, terra, maybe?
@@phydur3056 you're right for mog, didn't remarked it at first but it is indeed mog there, as for Celes being the one behind if you are right then the woman in far lower right corner is Terra. So if that ugly thing is not mog like I presumed it was... I guess it's Kappa the Imp or if it's Umaro, goodness gracious, a good chance they didn't made him look like that in the final game back in 1994
While this is true, Nomura was a character designer among other things. The ‘official’ art of FF6 was Amano’s; this is just a doodle by Nomura that was never meant to see the light of day
I thought the materia system was a vast improvement over the magicite system because in FF6 you'd just memorize all the spells on every character and that was that. Story wise, having fewer playable characters in FF7 meant that more time could be spent fleshing out each character's backstories and development. I think the only areas where FF6 greatly surpassed 7 were with equipment (far more equip options in 6, more armor slots, 2x relic slots instead of 1x accessory) and with character-specific job actions being more useful and reliable than limit breaks.
Old manuals having illustrations ... was rare ? You're kidding ? Almost every old game manual had illustrations (and colored one most of the times, SFC, MD and PCE, Saturn, N64, PS1 ...)
I wasn’t talking about illustrations, but more so concept art, behind the scenes type of stuff. Most of the stuff we got was EXACTLY what you said - illustrations; some unrelated employee who could draw halfway decently.
@@TheReturnersHideout Perhaps when adapted in other countries for legal concern, because as far as I remember on japaneses releases we had original artists, concept art, sketches etc. Of course on US or European releases they didn't have the right or will to pay for and made some 'adaptation'.. You had to mention COD 2022 and how they supposedly had 3k programmers. Before I watch this I want to say I had to beat this game well over 45 times often to get sprites from specific scenes that just weren't readily available for flash animations I was making as a kid. I feel like I should know everything, but if I don't I will salute you.
I salute you. Didn't know half of these things.
Wow! Fantastic! One of my favorite games, and I didn't know these facts! I only knew about the terra-garbage moment, the 1 year development, and cid-airship moment.
You only get this kind of content in the returner's hideout!
wow... literally never knew about the piece of paper... im pretty blown away by that actually
The weird character in the sketch is Umaro (I think that's the English spelling), the yeti looking optional character ._.
Holy shit, I got whiplash from how quickly this video got to the point. Great job! Subbed!
1:50 It's obvious that it's Umaro...
As always, if there’s more to uncover, The Returner’s Hideout will figure it out! It’s great to see the Resistance growing!
It would have been pretty cool if Terra was actually Locke's rival while still being the badass magical girl that she is. Like if they shared a love interest or some treasure hunting goal.
Lol we would have never gotten a FF7 if one of those things happened in the 90s lmao
Why would you not freeze frame the flash of realm?
I recently joined your channel looking up info for pixel remasters. Great Content for sure - Thank You!
No, thank you! That’s super nice of you!
Just thought it would be a neat idea for you
Oh this is good! I can do this! I’ll credit you in the video!!
@@TheReturnersHideout
Just sound out the name - pizza roll 😂
Haha thats my new favorite!
Damn, straight into the video! Always refreshing to not have a 2 minute intro unrelated to the actual video title!
I know a lot about FF6, but hadn’t heard of any of these. Nice video!
Also, commenting for the algorithm.
Bro you are my hero. This the only UA-cam channel that makes me happy and also the most underrated one I've subscribed to
Oh my gosh that’s so nice of you! Thank you so much!
So... Kitase was "promoted" from director/scenario writer to producer after Final Fantasy X.
That... explains a lot, actually.
I wonder what Rebirth will do about Cait Sith's name. I imagine they'll use the pronunciation we all have used for years.
So I recently played through and beat FF7 and just a couple days ago beat FF6 and I'm going back and forth on which one I like the best
Came here for ffvi and learn ffvii Cait Siths really name is ketchup. Mind blown
The way you jump straight into the video caught me off guard 😂
Lol something new I’m trying out!
Wow! Here I think I know everything there is to know about my favorite game and you continue to surprise me. That's some amazing information! I didn't know any of that.
I already knew about the paper in the Returners' Hideout. I only came across it by chance.
"This artwork in the middle is the male counterpart of Terra!"
Looks like a generic anime protagonist.
That tanaka photo is not her but yoko kanno
Oh snap! I should have researched it more, thank you so much!
Good catch!
Great video man! I love this. Keep em coming! And I hope you're still non smoking.
"during the ending CG cut scene...that plays during the ending" not the ending scene that plays during the start? :P
hehe, I make the same kind of embellishes in my videos sometimes too, it kind of just happens but it works.
GREAT job on this video!
Haha I caught that after editing of course! Thanks so much!
Ditto! FF6 is also my favorite one! And yeah, admittedly Woolsey made some, at best questionable translation choices... but son of a submariner, the entire fandom had a conniption when they "corrected" his most well known lines.
And the 2nd half of the game was unplanned I heard once. There was so much budget left over they got to do what they wanted right?
I’ll have to research this! Thanks so much!
Not quite. They finished way ahead of schedule, with them planning on the Floating Continent as the final dungeon, but instead of just turning it in, they decided to spend the extra time to change the original ending and expand the game further, giving us the entire World of Ruin plot!
@@AkaiAzul yep that's what I ment if it's not what I said because I heard it form a old co worker
Yes I too am a fan of Fffanafanazi VI
I came here to say this
0:15 Welp there's already one thing I didn't know
I will continue to say cait sith tho
That’s it! I’m doing a playthrough with Relm, Shadow, and Gogo as my main party
The family is reunited, and it’s all thanks to you! Although.. I am curious as to what the dynamics of that party would be through the second half of the game in terms of battling! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@TheReturnersHideout aye! Consider this to be continued for a comment on the future 🫡
Relm, Shadow, Gogo, and Strago is actually one of the best endgame party combinations in ff6 without glitches by the way, that's the whole family.
Huh, first thought of (maybe male) Aya Brea at what may have been the male Terra in that concept art.
Celes being a spy would explain why an augmented magic-using general was being pushed around by common soldiers. OTOH they were making a big show of hurting her when nobody was watching, and hid her in a basement instead of putting her in a path to meet the Returners. So eh.
I wonder if Nomura had that unused male Terra/Tina concept in mind while designing Kingdom Hearts Terra. There is a little resemblance.
My favorite also.
Though I've played it so much that I'll likely not want to again for 8 years or so. I've done just about everything possible.
Crazy Celes makes sense since she WAS still made a Magitek Knight using flawed esper magic extraction systems.
Just a reminder to deny joining the Returners until you get the cooler relic from Bannon.
Hell yes! These were some facts I *actually* didn't know. Loving your channel, friend.
Thanks so much! That’s super nice of you!
The lost art you have no idea who or what is makes me thing of Umaro.
I always learn something at the hideout 😎
I learned something new. Thanks Lenard!!
I'm glad they went with making Terra a woman. It just worked, and she was awesome.
everyone knows celes was a spy.
@@NAzo. wtf are you talkig about
@@NAzo. nope.
Celes was a spy.
Is there something wrong with YOU?
@@NAzo. lol.
she' was spy cuz she infiltrated the group through nefarious means.
the end.
did she come through in the end?
nope.
she flipped and joined your group.
still means she was a spy.
Celes wasn't a spy she was under posthypnotic suggestions, she's not evil. She just wanted to pretend to be and when she realizes she cares about her new friends the world ends that's why the over world song is titled "Searching For Friends" 😊
Interesting facts, I think the sim city simulation part was put into the ff6 T-Edition mod. Great video👍
Thats really cool. If that is true.
I've been banned from so many channels, please don't ban me from this one! You're too awesome!
That's weird
Here's one for ya:
FF6 Moogles are blind.
Oh. My. Goodness. This is fantastic! I love this, I’m definitely going to have to make a video on this! I’ll credit you 100%!
@@NAzo. Seems I misremembered the FF Ultimania detail: he dislikes his tail being touched.
well, they have that pompom antenna, so...
Everything for me was new up until 4:23.
I would like to see a spin off of FF6 about Shadows past
This is a great video, thanks!
Hey thank you so much! I appreciate that!
0:02 Where did this awesome art come from?
I'm just gonna go ahead and mention that I just featured the FF pixel art book like two days ago on my channel. Do with that knowledge what you will.
Breath of Fire 2 had a sim city/build a village type of thing. Wonder if thats connected...
And it also can fly if you save Ryu II Daddy from st eva grand church stage
@NAzo that doesn't mean they don't draw ideas from one another.
Gogo is actually a former president
Doesn’t Celes tell the party that she’s a spy while at the Magitek Factory? I remember being really confused at that part because it didn’t really affect the story whatsoever, but then again, that was more than 20 years ago.
I'm not certain on this but I think it was a mistranslation, that celes admits she was working for the empire but she didn't want to be their pawn basically. It's in the GBA port a little more, but on the SNES it's quite literally summarized with her saying "Locke..." And that's it
@ Thanks. I’ve been playing through FFV on Super Famicom and would like to pick up FFVI in the future. That would hopefully clear that up
Whelp, I knew about the Cait Sith thing, but that doesn't count.
Also, did you skip number 6? or was the Sim City thing suppose to be #6? Because if that's the case 3/6 for me, I knew about the Sim City thing, Final Fantasy Union did a video about it. I also knew the Cid thing, and the small dev team but not all the details.
honestly though, am I really that high? because number 5 is the last one you did. right?
Haha, there were only 5 facts, but I added SEVERAL extra ones for fun!
@@TheReturnersHideout I appreciated the extra ones. Thanks.
@@TheReturnersHideout oh my god. the 6 was because of ff6, not 6 facts. sorry about that 😬

This is a Kappa (Imp)
at 1:50 that weird thing that you said who is this, I presume it's Mog.. or the original concept of it.. and I may be wrong.. but I count 13 characters (if we exclude Strago's old woman counterpart) and since I doubt one of the 2 World of Ruin only recruitable characters (Umaro and Gogo) is that girl behind the "male version of Terra" like you called him..
I guess it's Kappa the Imp or if it's Umaro, goodness gracious, a good chance they didn't made him look like that in the final game back in 1994
So squall is really terra, ok, so rinoa being les makes sense, phew i was kinda confused for 17 years
Am I the only one that keeps hearing Final Mantasy 6?
Filled with Testosterone and magic spells!
Is there gonna be demo?
whats the name of the game at 0:24
Final Fantasy 6 Advance!
I always thought that the Cid character, looked liked a duck.
Amano did the art for ffvi. Not Nomura...
While this is true, Nomura was a character designer among other things. The ‘official’ art of FF6 was Amano’s; this is just a doodle by Nomura that was never meant to see the light of day
Cait sith is officially Kate sihth
Tell that bit about cait sith to square enix lol
Gogo is a male. There's a hidden code that's been found that a shop charges 50% more for male characters, and Gogo is on that list.
Yep! I covered it in another video somewhere around here lol. Thanks so much for commenting!
Final Fantasy died after FF6 story and creative-wise. It just got silly (especially the FF7 graphics) from FF7 on.
*9
FF9 is the last good one
I thought the materia system was a vast improvement over the magicite system because in FF6 you'd just memorize all the spells on every character and that was that. Story wise, having fewer playable characters in FF7 meant that more time could be spent fleshing out each character's backstories and development.
I think the only areas where FF6 greatly surpassed 7 were with equipment (far more equip options in 6, more armor slots, 2x relic slots instead of 1x accessory) and with character-specific job actions being more useful and reliable than limit breaks.
If you ignore Zidanes -horni- err Zidaneness id say ff9 was good
Old manuals having illustrations ...
Pc engine manuals have a lot of concept art, full page illustration of artists..
FFIV was made with only 13 people
You had to mention COD 2022 and how they supposedly had 3k programmers. Seriously how do you brag about 3 years and 3k people to make a game , then it comes out and the hit detection is spotty the weapons aren't balanced well the maps are so underwhelming that the 2 best maps are remakes that were added and I won't mention how even after a few maps have been added to 6v6 the game still doesn't have has many different 6v6 maps has every other game did at launch .
Sorry I know this is a FF6 video lol
Fienamanasee??
FF6 Cid is the only non-airship one? What about FF8 "Robin Williams" Cid? Or FF12 "I have DID in the same sense so many people on TikTok do, only there ACTUALLY IS someone else in my brain" Cid? Or FFT's "No seriously are you going to use someone else in your party?" Cid? Or FFT:A's "No seriously, people played this game and enjoyed it? Also screw the law system" Cid? Or FF13 I think? Didn't play that last one. But I guess he was a bad guy or something? Or was that the one after? Whatever. :D
You need to be wrong about more stuff though. You're not giving me enough material to work wi- OOOH GOGO IS RELM'S MOTHER YES LET'S GO!
