GHEENOE REBUILD - Where To Start?

  • This is the first of a video series to try and help people who want to renovate/restore an old gheenoe. My gheenoe is a 1984 classic that was on its way to the dump. The only thing that was good was the bottom fiberglass and part of the transom. This was a 6 month project and very labor intensive to do. It was well worth the time though. I learned all of this from youtube and the internet. I hope this helps you get started on your own redo.
    IN THIS VIDEO - We talk about things to think about before redoing a boat. We talk about core materials, fiberglass, and resin.

    Awesome job! I restored my WaterBug, a copy of the Gheenoe. The WaterBugs had a double layer of fiberglass compared to the Gheenoes. Heavier and stronger back in the late 80’s and early 90’s.

      @DesOnTheFly  2 роки тому

      Thank you! I was looking at the water bug! I like how it has a bigger stern than the 80’s gheenoe. I bet the extra layer of fiberglass made it a lot hardier than the gheenoe too? I felt like if I didn’t put extra support in there it might fold up on me! Thank you for watching!!!

      Thank you! I hope they help. I ended up adding a layer of foam and glass to the walls for stability, otherwise they just kind of flapped in the breeze. So I used small screws and 5200 marine glue. It worked great!!!!

    I’m about to start my project of a 1989 13’ gheenoe. Any suggestions or recommendations would be great! This is my first rebuild. Do you suggest filling holes with bondo and sanding smooth before you put a full new layer of fiberglass?

    • @DesOnTheFly
      @DesOnTheFly  Рік тому

      I definitely recommend filling in holes or cutting out/redoing section before you put a full new layer on. Those older ones definitely need a gut job. The wood gets so soaked and rotten. What are you thinking of doing with the inside? When I took the rails off of mine I found bad cracks and waves I had to cut out and redo before I could put a new layer on.

    Love these videos - Subscribed! Question, what thickness foam did you use? I live in FL and found the supplier but they offer both 1/2 and 3/4. Thanks

    • @DesOnTheFly
      @DesOnTheFly  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you for subscribing!!! Because I used a lot of reinforcement and was fiberglassing both sides I went with the 1/2 inch. They recommended to have a support every 2 feet but I didn’t go more than a foot without some kind of a support point. Plus, I’m chunky but I’m not big enough to put a bow in the 1/2 inch after both sides had a coat of 1708 on them. They ended up being ridiculously stable…. I had a hatch blow off and it was run over by a school bus and i was still able to stand on it (tested it for fun and was impressed). Let me know if you have any other questions. What kind of boat are you redoing!?

      @@DesOnTheFly at my local Home Depot, they sell 1/2 thick, 4x8 sheets for $99 each. Might go that route as it’s is super strong, 1/2” thick and won’t require additional resin. Thanks to your videos, I started to explore other options than just wood.

      Hey! Thanks for watching! I think I ended up using 4 gallons for the majority of the project. 2 for the bottom and 2 for the top. The 1708 ends up sucking up a lot of resin. Don’t forget to check out pro marine epoxy. It is half the price of total boat, just don’t use table top epoxy. It gets weird at hotter temps. promarinesupplies.com/521-marine-grade-epoxy-resin/?sku=521GKF&gclid=Cj0KCQjw0umSBhDrARIsAH7FCofpiNfhSnxOcd9B3tlcYYphDBDOPxagVJLDEb3LFo_iPiBmr68GIe0aAl_UEALw_wcB

    • @DesOnTheFly
      @DesOnTheFly  2 роки тому

      Yeah, that sucks! It costs more to ship the foam than it does to buy it! I would start with one gallon and see how much your fiberglass soaks up. Are you putting anything on the plywood before you put your fabric on?

  • @dennismcginnis
    @dennismcginnis Рік тому +1

    Yours was worse than mine was, and is, again. Mine is a river hawk 17'. I use Bondo fiberglass jelly to patch holes and then Bondo fiberglass resin with the cloth. Pretty close to what you did. The rivers here in north Georgia have rocks and rapids so I'm going to coat the bottom of my hull with rhino liner this time. I like what you did to yours. I might put more layers on mine first.
    Up here you gotta go upstream and fight currents. Anything less than 15hp won't make it.
    When you can make it, though, I can guide you on a hell of a ghenoo trip once I finish my boat. Our watershed comes out in mobile, AL. That's downstream.
    Your channel got recommended at random by the way. That's how I wound up here.
    Besides that I've been trying to figure out a way to make a convertible top that converts into a set of sails as well. I've got an outrigger system designed too. I'm going major on mine this time. It's set up to tow the outrigger canoe. Coleman with the floaters.
    Excellent videos you have. Thank You.

      @DesOnTheFly  Рік тому

      Awesome!!! Yeah, the oysters get my boat and I will need to do some love patches here in the next couple of years just to keep up maintenance. I bet you do need a 15hp upstream! I’m going to upgrade now that I feel more comfortable with the boat. A 4hp is just a little small. I would love to keep in touch and see Georgia. Rhino liner will work well. I love the airboat coating on mine. It really helps! What do you mainly fish for?

    • @dennismcginnis
      @dennismcginnis Рік тому

      @@DesOnTheFly That would normally be a simple question except our local government won a lawsuit against watershed PFA violators very recently. In the upper watersheds you can go for trout or other small fish. Crayfish traps increase your chances of success. I wouldn't keep or eat any catfish. Any tipe of chicken wing sized fish should be ok to eat other than that.
      In the middle watershed small striped bass is what you want to get for food. The pollution complicates things. I'm trying to re-figure it out again myself.
      Thing is you pass through towns here going upstream. There's islands in the middle of nowhere and there's supply stores next to bridges the whole way. In Rome you can get anywhere you need to go by river in town. It's a different scenario. Yes it's addictive 😎

      @@DesOnTheFly For my second answer, I like the adventure. I stealth camp here and there. I only fish for food if I need it. You ain't got time to stop much if you're gonna make it upstream camping.
      What I do is get to the camp and go to dollar general and get sandwich meat first thing and hide it among stock in the freezer. Then I set up camp and buy it frozen the next day.
      There's not many safe fish catch eat places at the moment. Even our tap water is contaminated along with well water.

      It made sense, I don't get to stealth camp a lot but I primitive camp as much as I can. I fish for fun, but I love eating my catches. But Red tide, and water pollution down here make it really hard too.
