Hi Georgie, if you can pull it off, get yourself to the next or future excursion. Standing trackside witnessing the beast will leave you breathless. Thanks for the comment!
Update 4/22/22, BigBoy excursion postponed due to "Supply Chain Congestion". You'd think fertilizer from Donaldsonville would be TOP PRIORITY! Who told UP to limit fertilizer shipments? I smell unAmerican malfeasance.
We are happy that you experienced the majesty of such an awesome locomotive. Hopefully, we all get to experience 4014 on the high iron again. Thanks for your comment.
I'm anxious to see 4014. I've been waiting (literally) as long as I can remember to see a Big Boy in action. I first learned of the Big Boy when I was 3 or 4, and a few years later, Union Pacific transported 4014 back to Wyoming. I was there when he passed through Laramie, and I was there when he arrived in Cheyenne in 2014. But I have not been able to see it since Depot Days in 2017 or 2018.
We consider ourselves fortunate to have experienced #4014 trackside. If you have not subscribed, please do so. We will keep you up to date once the 2023 schedule is announced. Thanks for watching.
It's a beautiful thing; if you have not subscribed, please do; we have some really cool archival material on UP 3985, which will be released soon. Once subscribed, be sure to ring the bell to be informed of the next show. Thanks again.
Wow thats my Favorite Train of all time i mean i love this train and this time, this is what a Colossal Steam Locomotive looks like! And i thank that Steam Train for pulling that Locomotive and a steam from behind!
Wow the engineering aspect is mind blowing 🤯 no computers, no electronics just pencil paper and smarts. I wonder 🤔 could this be done today without computers?
Wish they would put a four mile long set a cars behind it and make it work a little and hear that baby chug! instead of blasting the whistle all the time!
The diesel‘s not there to provide additional pulling power. It’s there to provide dynamic braking on descending grades as well as to feed the data to the in-cab displays for the positive train control system. And lastly it’s there as an insurance policy to get the 4014 moving off the mainline should it develop some sort of mechanical issue. They can’t risk tying up a main line with an excursion train.
ED Dickens my uncle Stan Stanley was a train engineer and lived in Cheyenne Wyoming The home of big boy 4014 and i was a rodeo man and bullrider and for 15 years i rode bucking bulls and always had to make it to the daddy of them All world's biggest outdoor rodeo but have long since retired from bullriding
That is such a beautiful machine. I noticed the diesel engine behind it. Do they pull at all with the big boy? Not that it matters but I was just curious.
The diesels are utilized in braking as well as water conservation. Considering watering locations are few and far between. The diesel also provides operation insurance in case of break-down; gotta keep trains rolling. Thanks for viewing and your comment!
There’s only one diesel locomotive in the consist. That’s there primarily for dynamic braking on descending grades as well as providing PTC (positive train control) data to the in cab displays on the 4014. And lastly should there be some sort of mechanical issue with the 4014, the diesel can help get it off the mainline to eliminate any delays to freight trains. The other car you’re seeing in the contest that looks sort of like a B unit is a generator car. It provides 480 V AC power to feed the coaches. It has no ability whatsoever to provide any traction for moving the train though.
Went to Sharon Springs KS to see The Big Boy on 23NOV19. WOW, a colossal machine! Took lots of pictures and captured video of it leaving. Chased it back to Colorado and took a few more pictures and captured a few more videos, as it commanded the rails en route to Limon, CO.
Brakes, electricity for the coaches, and yes, also a safety net in case of any breakdown. Last bit is hilarious I think, coz big boy gonna outlast all those pussy diesels
UP has said in a few videos the diesel is there for Dynamic braking on long descending grades and it also provides PTC to displays in the 4014. It also can help if any mechanical issues arise or when the 4014 needs to be moved around yards during storage.
update 6/30 We're sorry to announce that we're unable to reschedule the Big Boy No. 4014's West Coast Steam Tour in 2022 as we continue to focus on efforts to improve network operations. We will look to reschedule this tour in the future.Instead, No. 4014 will head south to Denver on Thursday, July 28. The Big Boy will be on display in Denver on Friday, July 29 along with the "Experience the Union Pacific" rail car, a multi-media walk-through exhibition that provides a glimpse of the past while telling the story of modern-day railroading. There will also be a live Q&A with the Steam Crew. Admission is free to Friday's display.
The excursion has been postponed for now and UP states it's because of supply chain issues. OK, makes sense to avoid looking like you're focusing on marketing while there's a supply chain problem. So, my best guess is there will be no excursion this year.
@@chasingtrains7827 -- I live in the SLC area of Utah and am still kicking myself for missing the excursion in 2019, having watched many of the videos from that trip I feel a need to kick myself in the @ss.
