Everyone is so focused on 3985 being restored, but the fact that 5511 is also planned for restoration to operate is awesome to me . Pretty sure she's the only surviving steam locomotive with Young's valve gear.
One cannot help from being overwhelmed by just looking at these majestic old work horses that graced the landscape from sea to shining sea, from purple mtn.majesty,to amber Waves of grain. They will not be forgotten 🇺🇸🙏🇺🇸
Fun fact, 3985 is running with 4014’s tender. It was not converted to oil in time for the 150th anniversary of the golden spike, so they used 3985’s tender and will continue to do so.
UP 3985 came to Louisville in the late 1980s or early 1990s. I saw it on display. It was huge and sat there in the yard “breathing.” The next day it departed late and came blasting through my neighborhood so fast that it was past you before you could get a good look at it. I was thrilled! It was on its way from Louisville to Huntington, WV.
What a wonderful video young lady. Once it's restored they should have a triple header 4014, 844, and 3985 that would be a beautiful and amazing sight to see just one time!!!! I do wish U.P. could have done the renovation tho but it's good it's getting restored tho.
Look up what's in Ogden Utah at the old Depot. Nice video. I believe they have one Simalar on static display among other wonderful historical machines.
2:51 She STILL has 4014’s tender! You think they would’ve converted that over to oil by now and given Challenger hers back! In any case, roll Challenger roll!
I'm assuming he already accomplished what he set out to do and is extricating himself using the easiest means available in that confined space. I recommend putting some cardboard on top of the ballast first. It makes it much easier to slide, and it's slightly more comfortable.
And it looks much nicer. Shame all of that heritage is lost, though. However, I would suspect that GE had something to do with its demise. When GE was getting into the production diesel locomotive, I would guess they would not have want a competitor a mile down the road from their main offices and they did “own” the town. Whatever the reason American Locomotive never made it successfully into the diesel era and the the town has pretty much washed their hands of what could have been a heritage they could have capitalized on... There is almost nothing left to show Alco was ever there. That said, it would be really something if either a Big Boy or Challenger would pass through the town of their origin.
GE , I believe had a lot to do with ALCOs demise. Unfortunately, Schenectady is a very short sighted city . I don’t think they ever had a forward looking mayor
So it is still use coal to run 3985. Don’t convert it, I think we can still use Coal. I mean Coal didn’t ran out in United States anyway. Plus, Steam Locomotive looks more complete with Coal.
'Just "fly-specking" here, ,and if you haven't already been corrected, please enunciate, (speak the numbers of the locomotive), as "Thirty Nine Eighty Five" rather than the 3-9-8-5. 'Just saying. Excellent video otherwise.
There's no one in the leadership at UP thats willing to set aside some money to restore these historic machines? I'd find it very unlikely that they couldn't afford it so what the hell? Just baffles me.
not many people are willing to give millions of dollars for something like that, and I guarantee nobody in any leadership position at UP cares about steam locomotives.
@@jamesm6638 I'm still surprised no one cancelled the steam program yet, but I'm also hoping that it doesn't go away anytime soon. CPKC also revived their steam program.
Lmao yeah dude, grow up. She can say it how she wants. If you don’t like it, watch something else. I agree it is slightly annoying, but you have a choice in which video to watch!

@Arseno Pyrite You have my attention... What engine might that be?
@Arseno Pyrite Thank you!

They’ll return 4014’s original tender once they convert it to burn oil. Then 3985 will get its tender back.
@@ethanmorel2746 heard otherwise, but that’s the business - never know what’s true or not lol. If you know that for a fact, then i stand corrected.
That is very true
Its doesnt matter as 844, 3985 and 4014 all have the same type of tender. All 3 are interchangeable between locos
@@KreativeKng agreed, was just thinking for historical sake

I remember her stopping in Seymour Indiana to take on water & be greased. I'll never forget it.
👍Thank you. Your reporting style was spot on. you asked the right questions, gave very nice talk on some back story's. Great Job.
I chased the challenger through Northern California in 1993. Impressive machine.

I thought it was faster than that 70MPH max mentioned...
The video is about 3985 but most of footage with problems is actually of the 5511
not complaining tbh
Why wasn’t Thirty-Nine, Eighty-Five built with roller bearings? They were being used successfully on other locomotives by that time.
3985 has roller bearings it’s 5511 that doesn’t
Excellent
👏VERY Nice‼️

A video about UP 3985 but shows mostly UP 5511.

Great Video! Could You tell me what editing software it is is pretty Good!
3:40 deberían ponerla también en estado de marcha
cuantas locomotoras deberian estar en estado de operacion.... una lastima
I would have been really interested and I think I speak for a lot of people would be interested as well in what the horsepower was for this locomotive
Built in New York State 👍👏🙂♥️🇺🇸
I like your video, good
It was once clinchfield 676
Why did the guy crawl underneath, backwards, and FACE DOWN from 1:52 to 2:43 seemingly having done nothing ?!! Face up, yes.. But face down ? Why ?
Maybe so nothing falls in his eyes?

I believe he knows what he is doing, I worked in the field for 35 years, been in them confined positions, just saying.
Where ALCO stood now stands a casino

I scratch my head, why is Ed Dickens not converting 3985,it was sitting beside 4014 and I thought he would be doing it!!??
UP said no

Speaking the numbers like that can lead to misunderstandings. Especially over a radio or poor phone connection.
She has been already. For a video like this, it really doesn't matter, but over the radio, it does.
Thank you for letting me know. I didn’t realize. I appreciate the help 😊

What horrible looking locomotives
Can't agree
Why
Don't worry. The restoration will make them brand new.
Then why do you keep watching videos on them? Is it a guilty pleasure of yours? 😏

Not everyone pronounces it as "thirtynineeightyfive". Don't throw a tantrum over how she pronounces it, it's just how she prefers to say it
Take it up with the Trainmaster.and let him Give the New work order.!!!
