- Having a bicycle in The Netherlands is a pretty essential item. However, where do you get your bike from? Swapfiets is in fact a very popular option and these bikes are easily recognisable with their light blue front coloured wheel. The question is however - should YOU get a Swapfiets bike? In this video, I’m going to be drawing on my personal experience with a Swapfiets bike and discussing some of the pros and cons to help you make your decision.
If you’d like to find out more about Swapfiets, then you can also visit them at swapfiets.nl/ or / @rideswapfiets
Thank you for watching this video. I hope you found it enjoyable.

ABOUT ME
Hello there! My name is Daniella Perera and I’m an artist and vlogger based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I grew up in Hong Kong and the UK, and I’m of mixed heritage including Chinese, Sri-Lankan, Dutch and Portuguese.
Near the end of 2020, I moved from Kuala Lumpur to Amsterdam with my husband. I have since fallen in love with this city, and I make UA-cam videos (every other weekend) about things to do in Amsterdam and tips to settle in faster. The idea behind 'Pocket Lighthouse' was to shine a light on the above topics, and for this information to be accessible on the go.
One of my long-term goals is to use my creativity (whether that be through art or video) to regularly support organisations helping strays and shelter dogs. Needless to say I absolutely adore dogs.

Hi Everyone :) Are you thinking about getting a Swapfiets bike, or do you already have one? What's your experience been like?
Great review. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! :)
Thank you for this, great video
Hi Susan, thank you for commenting on this video. I'm really glad you thought it was good. :)
Thx for sharing. It sound strange talking about a Swapfiets bike😊 Its like saying Swap bike bike. Your video is very informative, thank you.
Hi Marius. Thank you for your comment. Haha, true it does sound a little odd but had to be done that way!
Great video! I love my Swapfiets bike and am reluctant to change for the reasons you mentioned. The only other con I can think of is that it's not great for people who are shorter than me (158cm), as then the bikes will be too big. I know someone who had to return their Swapfiets bike for this reason. But I love how well-maintained my bike is and that free professional help is just a short visit away :)
Hey lovely - that's cool you're using Swapfiets too! :) That's such a great point about height. I didn't think of that! Man that is tricky for people shorter than 158cm.
It's a Dutch company, the Dutch are tall. With 1,58: you're in the wrong country. You should have known better before coming to this country, hahaha
Yes, it is good system. However, as you gain more experience start to learn the different bicycles from other manufacturers somewhere in the future you will want your own bicycle. Specifically for leg length, and all those other measurements which make up a bicycle.
You're absolutely right! I've also started looking for a sportier type of bike which is more suitable for the longer rides. Building up the stamina too. Given your experience, do you have any recommendations on particular manufacturers that are good (or ones to stay away from too)?
Nice video! I ended up getting one. I was thinking of getting one of those urbanproof baskets you have on the front of the bike too. Would you recommend it? :D
Thanks for the positive feedback on the video :) It was ok for about 4 months, but actually I came back to my bike one day (parked) and the basket was cracked down the middle. The kind of crack that can't be missed. I can only hazard a guess that someone removed their bike quite roughly next to mine and cracked it. The basket is fine if you're looking for a plastic one. Also consider the wicker/metal baskets.
@@pocketlighthouse cool thanks!! ☺️
fyi. A bel that is heard at 20 meters distance is mandatory by dutch law as is the use of lights when it getting dark. so those accessories you mention are mandatory by law.
Thanks for mentioning this:)
Maybe it is good for a start, but eventually I think it will be cheaper to have your own bike. The maintenance of a bike is always low. And you can but it in the correct size of your length, as mentioned previous.
For fixing a flat, that can be a challange but there are companies that will do that on the spot for you. Most of them have a wide range that they cover.
But this is my.own opinion of course
That's super handy to know! I didn't realise there were these companies that can do repairs on the spot (plus have a wide range of coverage too). I did a google search and found a few. Given your experience, do you have any recommendations on a good company to choose?
@@pocketlighthouse Unfortunately I don't have any experience with these companies. I only know that they excist.
Maybe a look at the reviews will help? Or maybe asking your followers for a suggestion?
@@robhofkes3221 hey no worries, I shall ask around! :)
Hey, after how long do you need to pump the tires? And does swapfiet provide equipment to pump them? Thanks!
Hi there, from memory I really didn't need to pump very often (perhaps once a month if that). It really depends on how often/far you're riding though. The pump isn't provided.
Deluxe 7 is the most uncomfortable bike in the world.... Those Dutch designers are living in the past
Oh no, sorry to hear it's so uncomfortable for you.
