  • Buzzbike is a London bike subscription that was designed by Londoners, for Londoners. At £29.99 per month, it's a great way to see if you enjoy getting around by bike, without committing to the upfront costs of buying a bike.
Included with the subscription you get the support of their workshops and rides to help you build your confidence, as well as support from the Rider Happiness team should you break down (with a 15 mins response time no less). In this video I take the Buzzbike AND Swapfiets Deluxe 7 for test rides to see how they ride and compare the 2 bikes.

This is hands down the best bike club I’ve ever heard of!!! The ability to rent a bike with the offer of group rides and ride support included is a game changer. I am hoping for great success for you Londoners and maybe they’ll be a start up here in the US one day 🤞🏽.

I hope it spreads. I wish it had been an option when I moved to London. It would have saved me two failed attempts at cycling for transport. The support would have been just what I needed.

A little bit about the Coaster brake - based upon my experience.
Coaster brakes do have some advantages, they work just as well in the wet as in the dry, they are maintenance free and will work for many years without any attention, there are no cables or clutter around the handlebars, they do not wear out you rims and are of course not affected by rim damage or wheel buckle.
Disadvantages - they are intended for fairly flat riding and will quickly overheat if used down long descents. You do have to plan your stopping a bit better so that your feet are in the right position for maximum braking efficiency/effect, which is not necessarily a bad thing but does take some getting used to. As you state you can’t peddle backwards which can delay or slow your restart.
The millions of people who have ridden and still ride machines with coaster brakes has to say something about the success of this system.

Some very good points, thank you for the comment. I had coaster breaks on my bike as a kid and lived to tell the tale 😉. They do have advantages and like you said they are used by millions, I just don't think they are suited to the chaotic riding of London. 😃

@@OneLessCar Great channel, good to see something other than guys in Lycra on (what I would call) racing bikes.
Really liked the rain Cape review by the way. 🙂

I had a Swapfiest bike and didn't get on with the riding style and single gear solution due to being an amputee. I swapped it out for their geared version and still didn't enjoy it. That's, where the problem started as their customer service, is shocking. Have just signed up for Buzzbike so hoping for a better experience!

It seems odd to me to have a bike that will be left outside and not have a full chain case. When you have a gear hub there’s no reason to have the chain completely exposed to the elements.
The swapfiets looks better but even that doesn’t have the chain fully enclosed as I think the Dutch versions of swapfiets have. I had a coaster brake on my old Globe bike (specialized sub-brand). As you say, it took time to get used to starting off without being able to move the pedal but I got used to it and loved that bike. Was sad to have to eventually sell it when I upgraded to something more suited to where I was riding.

It's a great way to try out owning a bike. If this has been around when I first moved to London it might have saved me 2 failed attempts of cycling for transport.

Which bike would be the more suitable option for a beginner? I haven’t been feeling n a bike in 20 years but would like to get started again

That's a great question. I'd go with your gut instinct pick a flexible contract then commit to longer term once you are more sure. For London I think the Buzzbike is slightly more suited. It's nipper.

Are you familiar with your fellow Canadian, Amsterdam based, You tuber Justin Slaughter? One of his vlogs entitled "Why Dutch bikes are better" has inexplicably attracted over 1.16 million views.

I've somehow missed that. I suspect they are ok in the right setting, but at the moment I don't they are great for London. I'll be sure to check out that video this weekend 😀

I strongly recommend to avoid using Buzzbike. I signed on to the service and was charged up front, but then they postponed the delivery for a week with only a two hours notice. This was after they had, belatedly, told me a two hour time slot the day before. The time slot could not be changed I was told, because the route was fixed. Only, the route was not fixed at all since the delivery was cancelled and postponed for a week. They offer you a free delivery (worth 10 pounds) but at that time you are already paying for the subscription and the things you choose to buy as add-ons (lights etc.).
    A truly horrible experience
