STAR TREK Logical Thinking #69 - Special Pleading (Selective Adherence)

- Educational PSA where Mister Spock corrects some crewmembers after overhearing them employing a logical fallacy in their discussions.
Had NBC decided to teach principles of sound reasoning in the mid-1970's they could do no better than to have the logical Mister Spock do the teaching. As an addition to the the two-dozen or so Public Service Announcements I created featuring the animated crew of the Starship Enterprise, I have created a new series of PSAs featuring Mr. Spock called "Logical Thinking." Using the Vulcan science officer to educate them in proper reasoning is "Only Logical" as he states at the end of each PSA.
Done in the style of Filmation's 1973-75 Animated STAR TREK series.
Alternate spock: "Nurse Chappel........your agonizer, please. NOW."
"Oh, I should reassess my thinking" said no one ever when accused of disobeying captain's orders and attempting to get an unfair advantage.
Or pretty much no one ever anywhere. Social media has proven this. 😁
Especially when one has a major unrequited crush on the 1st Officer.
A mass on conflicting impulses to borrow from NOMAD and apply laterally.
@@MrWhipple42 totally! This series is great for teaching fallacies, but I can't help but think that the real charm is from the humorous irony that absolutely no one, ever, when challenged with the fallacy they're using, would say "Oh, I should re-assess my thinking" - at least not online. That's what makes these so hilarious, imo.
"With all due respect..."
Hey, Star Trek is one of the rare "actually good" POSITIVE scifi utopias. Of course our world is far less ideal than theirs ;-)
Spock is an exception that doesn’t require special pleading.
Nice to hear that Kirk has finally gotten over his space laryngitis.
I'm glad to finally see Janice in TAS!
I believe this animation is fan made, not the original TAS.
@@olindetroit7636 Yes, I know that. I was being facetious.
Eminently logical;
Until Chapel said "Oh, I should reassess my thinking".
Six words you would NEVER hear out of the mouth of someone applying a double standard.
In my experience, people go on the offensive and unleash all their unrelated gripes when they are called out for something like this. "Well you didn't clean the coffee maker and your grammar is atrocious!"
@@Stevie-J Of course, If one is prone to "Special Pleading" then they might be equally prone to "Non Sequitur" as a response.
is there a logical thinking vid on that?
Or.....women in general.
"That would be best."
Yay for Yeoman Rand!
they distributed tap shoes to the entire crew
A non-Spock not falling for unsound logic before Spock can interject? Way to go, Rand!
Okay, next we need to see someone actually make a logical point, but the other person doesn't understand it, and Spock has to figure out what the other person doesn't understand. It's a nice companion to Spock complementing the sound logic of a previous argument.
Chapel: "Perhaps I should reassess my thinking."
Spock: "Yes, I think that would be best."
This is Mr. Spock's dreamworld interaction with humans. LOL
A sort of, "Rules for thee but not for me", fallacy. Sadly that us very common.
A "friend" of mine experienced that where he worked .
It is in proverbs and was warned against in The Gospels repeatedly.
Thank you for the episode and glad someone actually spotted a logical error.
Perhaps the crew is starting to catch on after all of Spock's explanations.
@@gwgux Admittedly I did think that in the earlier episodes Cyrano Jones finding Harry Mudd's Argumentum ad Nauseum and Ipse Dixit statements in particular "persuasive" felt a bit ham-fisted...
Yeoman Rand knew what time it was!! 🖖😂
The medical team was going to sneak off for some much needed R&R because they've been trapped on the ship for months. Spock is such a buzzkill
😂
"Oh, and nurse. If I want plomeek soup--I'll ASK FOR IT!"
😄😄
“It’s only logical…”
She should have brought him escarole. With chicken broth (Nonna broth, not store broth), white beans and smoked turkey neck. And pecorino.
@@BrutishYetDelightful My family adds parmigiano to chicken soup. This is the first time I've ever heard of someone else adding a cheese.🤗
@@mateolatosa215 I will add pecorino to nearly anything. Locatelli pecorino in particular. I would at least briefly consider putting it on a banana split.
Husband: “You need to calm down. You’re acting crazy.”
Wife: “Oh, I should reassess my thinking.”
Husband: “That would be best.”
Wife: **spends every waking moment that her husband is away from the house to plan her vicious and bloody revenge**
Nurse Chapple: "Now I know!"
Spock: "And knowing is half the battle."
Star Fleet Joe!
Thank goodness nobody made a fallacy of logic after Spock fixed the warp drive in TWOK. He'd have walked out of the chamber and irradiated the entire engine room trying to instruct on logical arguments with his dying breath.
I still wish McCoy would walk up on one of these of these conversations.
This would have been nice to see. 😂
"Why you green blooded computerized...oh, well, nevermind, I can't deny it when you're right."
@@pex_the_unalivedrunk6785 _"Green blooded _*_Goblin"._* 🤣🤣
"I am a doctor dammit, not a philosophizer!"
Hmmm... That seems too much like the guy from "Dodgeball", White Goodman, and not enough like McCoy.
That was a manly hand Nurse Chapel raised to her face.
"I hear that every inhabitant wears the same outfit and hat." They probably all have the same hair color and style..
Still loving these. An invaluable resource. The voice work is so good. And the background surprises are always very much appreciated. Thanks again for your work. 🤍☮
Spock employing #69 here..."Nice"
It did take some special pleading-apparently, but eventually the ladies saw that it was only logical.
I like that they used the TOS look of the Enterprise and not SNW Enterprise
Also, like that, it looks like TAS and not lower decks
Given Nurse Chappel's affection for Mr. Spock, It's a wonder she didn't offer him "oral compensation" for her faux pas.
Grace Lee, Majel and Leonard are in spiritual stitches. However, i feel if he really said that, Yeoman Rand would agree with a smile and 🙄 leaving the briefing room. Christine Chapel's hand wouldn't playfully smack her forehead, but Mr. Spock's chest. With McCoy, to later "rib" him about it.
One of the reasons medical terms are mostly Latin is so even medical staff that speak different languages will be able to communicate when it comes to critical medical care. That of course wouldn't work on another planet.
Special Pleading, that's what Spock was doing before Nurse Chapel broke up with him with a song and dance number.
Quark: So you're saying it should be possible to profit from this application of special pleading? I find this intriguing and exciting.
and yet sometimes we're expected to do it anyway, spock
Yeoman Janice Rand wasn't in the animated "Trek"! I believe the character was written out of the original series during its first season, probably under pressure from the folks at NBC.
Listening to Spock and two blondes flirting so boldly really rouses a reaction, uh.. below decks.
just stumbled upon your video and am so happy i did! Love TAS and glad to have more, I've always dreamed of voicing a Trek character maybe a computer! lol 🖖
Yay! More Yeoman Rand please!
The voices! I am assuming you are working with voice cloning now? Good stuff, but am glad you still voiced Spock.
You know, if this would have happened during Pike's captaincy, this would have ruined Spock and Chapel's 'date night'...
the origin of many accidents
You’d never be able to sneak up on anyone here with those echoey steps😂
As I recall, the Kirk-era Enterprise only had one Transporter room.
Depends on who you talk to. I seem to recall that the ENTERPRISE had cargo/emergency transporters. It was detailed in the old set of blueprints that were published in the 1970s. Or was it the technical manual...?
@xaenon it was the blueprint set - I own a copy
2:00 - Is it just my imagination, or do both women look like they're thinking "Oh my god! What is Mr. Spock droning on about *now?!* Yeoman Rand in particular looks like she can't wait to get out of there. So much so it makes me wonder if she was drawn that way on purpose (as a joke?).
Rand wasn't in the cartoon series; CHDanauser added her.
@@WhiteCamry Yes. I am perfectly aware of that, having watched every episode of the cartoon since it premiered over 50 years ago (and a great many times since). What did I say in my post that led you to believe I thought otherwise? I was commenting on her annoyed-looking facial expression in that scene, not the fact that she was even there. If it wasn't clear, I was implying CHDanhauser himself was the one who drew her that way as a joke.
Your animation is getting betting. Much smoother.
I have watched all of these.😊
"Oh, I should reassess my thinking. Also, I should have had a V8. And, AAAAAAH, I'm home alone!"
Freaking AWESOME!!!!
Mr. Spock - Mr. Killjoy himself
Please force Congress to watch this shyyt.
I'm waiting for when they're in a conflict with a alien race and they're shooting lasers and Spock acts as mediator and goes "This fighting is counterproductive and meaningless. We should arrive at a peaceful settlement, after all, it's only logical."
"Excuse me aliens, I could not help overhearing. This fighting is counterproductive. Also, can you tell me how to get to the spaceport? My Iphone has no coverage here..." 🤣
Then it would be a member of the bridge crew's turn to point how Spock's argument is invalid. He gives no support for this argument. He could give the support data on why the fighting is counterproductive. The alien ship's crew might fall asleep, then the Enterprise can blast the aliens to atoms.
@@rsacchi100 🤣 Sounds like Discovery. 🤣
They really need carpeted floors.
Kinda cute how they trashed Nurse Chapel in this (can’t see her doing this).
The problem here is that Nurse Chapel doesn't explain _why_ her medical staff won't have a translator with her group. Why would she not want a translator?
I would love to know as well, but it's actually not relevant. She maintained she was the exception without specifying the reason, even when Rand indicated there was a concern. And when specifically called on it, she could have given that reason - but did not.
It's logical to assume, then (sorry, couldn't help myself...) that she didn't actually have a reason.
Of course, in the context of the actual show (with a smattering of real-world rank structure), Spock likely would have asked specifically for that reason. He's second in command, after all, and his function in the heirarchy is specifically to tend to the nuts and bolts details of the captain's orders. If there was a valid reason for Chapel's exception, he could either authorize the exception on his own authority (and would therefore assume responsibility for doing so), or ensure the captain's order was followed.
Spock should have then rendered nurse chapel unconscious with his Vulcan neck pinch/ for emphasis.
Has anyone else noticed that in these logical thinking videos, Mr. Spock is always up in everyone else's business? Perhaps he should change his name to Mr. Busybody.
Nice drawing of Janice.
Her hands! 😄
It seems like disobeying captain's orders is bad even if you explain your justification for it. If you want an exception and can explain why, you should go to the captain and ask for it.
Sisko would drop Spock and Janeway would send him to the brig For pulling something like this.
Uhura voice is dead on (not easy to do) Yeoman Rand is very good too.
Spock mansplaining to Nurse Chapel.
No wonder they never hit it off.
That’s so unlike Nurse Chapel.
Intruder alert!
I might be a hypocrite but its okay when I do it. :)
🖖
"Excuse me UA-camr, I could not help overhearing your Vulcan salute." 🤣
A Fallacy often employed in many Trek Episodes.
Dave Cullen has a video mentioning your work!!!
ua-cam.com/video/1JWIruvRlEg/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
No allowance for special orders arranged before the briefing?
No requirement for a nurse (officer) to explain herself to a yeoman (enlisted).
Spock always be eavesdropping and whatnot...
"Excuse me ladies, I could not help overhearing..." This is like in every video in this series 🤣
"Excuse me Captain, I was just passing by your bathroom stall and I could not help overhearing. Are you well? I sensed you were straining. Also, could you spare a square?"😂
Spock has exceptionally sensitive hearing. Ok?😮
@@B2000Z 🤣 "I couldn't help hearing with my oversized ears. It's a funny story. I had an unfortunate accident as a child. I caught my head in a mechanical... rice picker... but, fortunately, there was an American missionary living close by who was actually a skilled plastic surgeon in civilian life.... Anywho, I'd like to coldly point out the fallacies of your discourse. Ahem, let's see here..."
There, fixed the backstory.
Nice
Ok. That was..., logical. 😏
....didn't they say it was the planets atmosphere that prevented the universal translators from working?
If only the original animations did not require special pleading!
This should be done in Spanish too.
If Spock was actually logical…
Curt, are there any books you might recommend specific to logical fallacies?
Sounds like Star Trek is validly criticizing "democrats".
But, we still want to know - Why did she think they would not need translators?
I skipped watching this episode. It just doesn't seem applicable to my life's circumstances.
Even if one episode doesn't apply to my life currently, I still watch them in case they apply later on.
I see what you did!
That would be best. Why does he always sound so threatening when he says that?
There is no sufficient answer to your question.
Sooo, Rand & Chapel dont kiss?
If you tried applying this logic to morality, does it fall apart? Discuss
No. Morality, good versus evil, etc are not subjective concepts; they are universal.
The concept of morality only SEEMS like it's not universal because people find ways to ignore, dismiss, or rationalize against immorality- often for their own gratification.
Something about the tone of that background music grates on my senses like the proverbial nails on a chalkboard.
Apparently it’s CHDanHauser’s leitmotif for the logic lesson videos. It indicates that Spock is coming to deliver a logic smackdown. 💪🏻
😍👍🏻🖖🏻
Why wasn't Spock immediately charged with sexual harassment and misogyny?
Because TOS/TAS-era ST wasn’t feminist (although Gene Roddenberry probably secretly wanted it to be so).
There was no special pleading in this video. Just an unsupported claim. Nurse Chapel claimed her team would not need interpreters. No one ever asked why, and no explanation was given. It could be that she is right. Maybe there is a perfectly valid reason for her assertion. We don't know.
When Nurse Chapel made the claim, Janice Rand clearly asked why is that? At about a 1:08
@@bowl1820 I stand corrected. I was failing to consider that special pleading is really just another form of making an unsupported claim. Or trying to support an unsupported claim simply by making another unsupported claim.
to "muster" in transporter rm 3?
Eeww.
Star Trek was always too cerebral for me.
"Special pleading" doesn't apply in this case.
...because...?
@@andreweff1284 It ... just... doesn't... :D
They could have spent a little more time on...acting.
That was first degree mansplaining.
😴
What robotic acting
Pay attention liberals.
The only time liberals pay attention to anything is when they set out to destroy it.
Why "liberals", especially?
@@actual_nonsense Well let's see. No money for vets, but plenty of money for illegals. Walls are racist, except when they live behind them. Believe science except for the fact there are two genders. My body my choice except for vaccines. I could go on for a long time, but you get the idea. Rules for thee, but not for me.
@@actual_nonsense Because liberals are well-known for double standards, and logical fallacies in general.
@@actual_nonsense Probably because some notable liberal politicians are prime examples of this; such as Nancy Pelosi, who wanted a mask mandate but did not wear a mask to a hair salon, and even refused to wear one after being asked to do so. This incident is partly what made her lose reelection.
Not saying conservatives are completely innocent, but too many older liberals are pretty bad about this to ignore.
Vulcan mansplaining.
aka the "rules for thee but not for me" fallacy, often used in discussions about religion.
Everything comes from somewhere, therefore God must have created humans.
What about God? Who created God?
Well, that is different. He lives outside of space and time, so he does not need a creator.
#facepalm
We have no evidence that God is a created being; there is plenty of evidence of creation all throughout this planet.
