Your 5-minute narrative about Depeche Mode was the most perfect I've ever heard. While Dave Gahan is one of the best vocalists and Martin Gore is one of the best composers, the brain behind the band's complex electronic sounds is Alan Wilder - a trained musician and a complete instrumentalist (bass guitar, drums, flute, guitar, percussion, piano, vocals, and his best: keyboards, samplers, and synthesizers).
As Depeche Mode's arranger and composer, wouldn't Alan be the "unexpected genius" that blended Martin's dark introspective melancholy ballad-esque lyrics with complex groundbreaking electronic sounds? Surely, Depeche Mode wouldn't be what they are today without him after more than 40 years - the headliner band in a city show! Perhaps, this unveils the Mystique of Depeche Mode!
For "Enjoy the Silence" from the 1990 album "Violator", Alan Wilder took Martin Gore's melancholy ballad-esque demo and completely re-envisioned the song as a percolating, melodic electronic dance track as we know it today. The resulting single went on to become one of the most commercially successful songs in Depeche Mode's history - a pulsating anthem with tens of remixes worldwide that payed off!
"Violator" really boosted Depeche Mode's airplane making it take off to firmly establish the band on the international stage in the 1990's - a turning point after Kraftwerk in the 1980's - two pivotal influences on the electronic music industry. Well, while Martin made the dark lyrics "gore", Alan made the band's songs sound "wilder"! His expertise in electronic music and willingness to experiment were key to realizing the band's ambitious vision.
