One of the best songs from the 80s. Laura had a good strong voice, had a few very good songs. Unfortunately she passed very young age 47. RIP!!
I was just about to say the same thing she was getting severe headaches and was ignoring them as she had a brain hemorrhage.
Laura passed at age 52. Not 47.
No she was 52. I dearly miss her, and would’ve only been twenty or so when she passed.
She was a New York girl from Westchester, I have a soft spot for fellow New Yorkers, and she was such a kind woman, a sweetheart. She lived on Eastern Long Island when she died, not a far drive from my town.
RIP Laura, I hope your happily reunited with your husband
Love Laura's voice, she had great power and range and was a much underrated artist I always thought. So sad that she passed at only 47.

Loved this song and the music video was pretty hot for the time. The video was directed by William Friedkin ("The French Connection," "The Exorcist" and "To Live and Die in LA." This song made #1 in the countries of Austria, Canada, Switzerland, West Germany, Portugal, Finland, Sweden, South Africa and Denmark.

I love a good old 80s power ballad! LB had a good voice that was very expressive. I think her problem was that she didn't fit into any one mould ie. rock / pop etc. This was what made her unique. Shame she's gone, as she was great.

If you've done both "Gloria" and "Self Control" I recommend her other big hits such as "Solitaire" and "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You" (a song written and later recorded by Michael Bolton).

Anyone else get the nostalgia of GTA Vice City or Scarface when this comes on? It takes me back to a happier, more simple time I feel like. Also makes me sad how fast time goes by and how much ive wasted. What a time it must have been to live in the 80's
My favorite female singer of the '80s. I first fell in love with Laura's voice listening to Gloria. Self Control is my favorite song of hers. Both songs are created by an Italian singer named RAF and I've listened to his version and they sound the same, except for the voices.
No, both had in common the same co-author (G.Bigazzi) but this was in collaboration with RAF, Gloria with Umberto Tozzi.

RAF aka Rafaele Riefoli's version wasn't as big hit as this one but being the composer of this song, I am sure he cries all the way to the bank. ;P
The RAF original was very successful in Europe but was not released in the US. The cover of L.Branigan was released at the same time. (also in Europe). In some charts they were in first and second place. In his career (almost all singing in Italian) he has sold over 20 million records.
