Sabbath were originally a blues band, that's how they started. American Blues hit England really hard in the late 50s/early 60s, a lot of future British rock stars were really big into it during their youth. That's really from where heavy rock music originated. Further, Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi had an industrial accident and lost the tips of his fingers, he had to play with banjo strings using a different, lower tuning. That's partly what gave Sabbath their heavier sound. They were really something different when they first came out.
This was off Black Sabbath's debut album and I was a little surprised when I listened to it all the through the first time, esp after hearing so much of their legend and of course Ozzy's solo material. Aside from the title track, the album is very blues-based, but it set the standard for metal to come. If you want to have a nice creepy chill down your back for Halloween, Angela, listen to the song by them CALLED "Black Sabbath" and the next F-U Valentines that come around , I recommend their song "N.I.B.", its a love song with a twist! Great reaction as always, Angela! xx
The roots of Britain Heavy Metal, from Birmingham. Remarkable because it was released in 1970, and the mass musical audience were into The Beatles, Bee Gees, The Who, Jimmi Hendrix, the american Folk music with such as Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, rock`n roll stuff with somehow "soft" with Creadence Clearwater, among many, many others. Ozzy`s approach with his boys, changed the rock sound for ever, almost overnight, by storm. Great reaction, Angela. Cheers, and take care, by the way, very happy new 2023 to you and more reactions, please.
Black Sabbath has LOTS of great music. Most Sabbath fans believe their creative peak was the albums.. vol 4, Sabbath bloody Sabbath, and sabotage. Much more complex, musicly superior to the earlier albums. Though they are all good. If you want to see their metal side, I suggest the song, symptom of the universe. Ozzy shines on that one. Love your reactions! Keep em coming.
I’ve known about Black Sabbath since the late 70s but I’ve never listened to all of the music until now. This song is so cool! At the time they were depicted as a Satan worshiper group because they mention Satan and demons in their music. But if you notice, 95% of it is described in a negative, horrific way. Sometimes the magic is positive. This is a very happy and positive vibe if you know what’s going on. Happy Birthday to Bill! 🎂
Angela , Black Sabbath has a huge music library . You may want to get more into them if you like the songs 👌🎸. Just a short history on them, before changing their name to Black Sabbath . They were a blues band named " EARTH ". They were very much into Hendrix , CREAM , Clapton the Beatles etc .
Sabbath as "Earth" never released an album. The reason they changed their name to Black Sabbath is because there was another band, a pop band, called Earth at the time and they got mis-booked as the wrong Earth.
“The Wizard” is an interesting choice for your first introduction to Black Sabbath. I love the song, but I would have started you out on “War Pigs” and/or “Paranoid.” My personal favorite is “Supernaut” by them!
1970! Black Sabbath's greatest hits album, We Sold Our Soul For Rock 'N' Roll, was one of those albums that got parents all worked up back in the day. I used to play the hell out of it as loud as I could get away with. The inner fold of the double record pictured a woman laying in a coffin with a cross stabbed into her chest vampire killer style. It freaked out some parents. Cypress Hill sampled the harmonica riff from "The Wizard" for their hard banging track from 1993 "I Ain't Goin Out Like That". Check that one out some time too.
Aw man, "We Sold Our Souls...." was actually put together by their previous manager after they fired him, the guy who robbed them of millions. The guys in Sabbath never got one dime from that record. Because of the way the contractual agreement was written the courts concluded that he had the rights to release the record. That was a bad period for Sabbath.
Holy crap, I can't believe you are reacting to this and a shout out to Bill, he is setting you on an amazing path In music history. There first album, the song you just heard is the 2nd track on the album, was a thunder clap at the music industry and freaked out a lot of people in general. It was the unofficial start of heavy metal, coming from hard rock and blues into a new art form. Their first 6 albums with the original lineup are magnificent and a big reason they are in the RR HoF. Try the official audio (Not the fan made video) for their classic War Pigs off their huge hit album Paranoid, full of classic tracks including the title track and Iron Man. They are upper echelon musicians, no ridiculous 90s screaming or a mix so loud the instruments blend into one, these guys, along with Led Zeppelin, defined the heavy metal and hard rock genre for generations of bands to come. I saw them 13 times, including 8 times with Ozzy, amongst the best shows you could ever get see. Thanks for reading and your journey with this band can last years, they have an incredible catalog. Enjoy!!! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
This song is about Gandalf from Lord Of The Rings...a favorite book of Geezer Butler who handled most of the lyric duties. Oh..btw...that's Ozzy on the harmonica!! 👍
Iommi is the riff master. There's endless (and pointless) debate about when metal "started". But this precedes anything that anyone was calling metal by quite a long period. Few would argue, though, that any accounting of the archtypes of metal would not include Black Sabbath -- and very prominently. They created something totally new and they knew they had. But they certainly didn't name it "heavy metal" -- that came later from the press and/or the record industry. They clearly do have a profound blues background and, in fact, started as a blues rock band. That's what was happening there and then. But I can personally attest that, by "Sabotage", we were absolutely calling them metal. You wouldn't confuse it for what has passed for metal in years to come (it's been a moving target). But if you listen, you can't miss the influence in later forms of metal. Is that meaningful? Probably not. If it moves you, listen to it. If not, walk on by.
Second greatest band of all time, right behind the Beatles...Bill Wards drumming is nothing short of brilliant. Hmm, well this is the Roots of actual metal/hard rock. I think you are maybe more accustom to the ridiculous, over the top bastardized modern day version of metal. Which is Ok, if you are into that sorta thing haha..
the year was 1970 and the Beatles are top of the chart - with other 60's band known as the British invasion ... there were no other band with this sound (of style) during this year -- not even the Led Zeppelin were doing this style ... so --- if anything -- others stole a few riffs or sounds from this band and album --- which BTW -- they borrowed $800 to produce this album ... + how Ozzy sounds then is the real voice and it might have changed throughout the years but there is no mistakes who he is by his first intro a song .... this album was credited as being the fore runner of heavy metal ... there are no such things as any other genre --- they created this genre ....
I'm a huge Sabbath fan, but to me this is one of their more boring songs. With the exception of the title track, Sabbath's debut album can't compete with anything they released afterwards up to and including Sabotage. In my view they only became the "true" Black Sabbath with the release of Paranoid.
@@vicprovost2561 Warning isn't bad (along with Sleeping Village, N.I.B. and Behind the Wall of Sleep), but I don't think any of them would have made the cut on any of their subsequent albums. The stuff they released from Paranoid to Sabotage was much more focused and sophisticated than anything on the first album, other than the title track, which is good enough to be on any Sabbath album.

Shout out to Bill Ward, one of the best drummers out there.
I liked this song, in general the first 2 albums of Black Sabath were awesome !!
First 2 Sabbath records are unmatched imo. Sabbath with Dio is also excellent.

Damn straight, that first song off the first album freaked us all out!
I saw them back in the day

one of if not the greatest driving tune ever performed! got to keep an eye on the speedometer with this one.
Song made in 1969. Heavy Metal in the 1960’s, hell ye.

Ozzie on the harmonica.
I saw these guys in Miami around 1970. Great concert.

I found an LP by Earth.. I knew it was pre Black Sabbath, so how bad could it be? Turns out pretty bad.
@@brenthenderson3983 They got 2 songs on that Earth album that aren't that bad .

@@21Piloteer well , I've seen the album cover. Just never seen it in a store or searched for it .

Same name as my favourite drummer of all time ever. Great recommendation Bill.

Awesome and you have a good voice thanks for the birthday shout out
Glad you got to react to Black Sabbath. There is so much more to react to. Enjoy...
What's not to like harmonica, yeah great riff I haven't heard too much Ozzy but I like it when the Wizard walks by. Thx

The wizard was the "magic man" back then...Aka a dealer, as in drugs 😂😂
Black Sabbath is definitely a great (Acid) Rock band from the 70’s
This is called "Acid Rock", hun. A little Sunshine and you'll understand what those images in the video you weren't watching are about.
My favorite.
Great song...I saw them back in the day. Try War Pigs by them! They have so many great songs!
I LIKE THIS SONG😉

So cool that you are giving it a chance to listen to…. I’m just saying
I wouldn't use the term country rock, but it definitely sounds pretty swampy.

Correct Ozzy is a Blues singer.

Hard Rock is blues based music.

The Wizard is the local drug dealer.
I don't know much about this group! The song is OK, and reminds me of being in the deep south!
TRy iron man or war pigs an crazy train
Hey check out faster pussycat house of pain.. ❤

country rock? lol
the blues harp is a bit too much.
FoamySlobber Maybe reminiscent of their "Earth Blues Band" period.
