Curved Air - Back Street Luv (1971)

- Curved Air are an English progressive rock group formed in 1970 by musicians from mixed artistic backgrounds, including classical, folk, and electronic sound. The resulting sound of the band was a mixture of progressive rock, folk rock, and fusion with classical elements. Along with High Tide and East of Eden, Curved Air were one of the first rock bands after It's a Beautiful Day, The Flock and the United States of America to feature a violin. Curved Air released eight studio albums, the first three of which broke the UK Top 20, and had a hit single with "Back Street Luv" (1971) which reached number 4 in the UK Singles Chart.
Hey kids, that crushing moment when you discover your grandparents were cooler than you.
This 72-year-old appreciates your comment, v. Stay free. Rab 👋 🕊
My dad would have been Ninety this. year and he had some Curved Air in his collection.
And this rare psychedelic gem:
ua-cam.com/video/7j2DmC81Cv8/v-deo.html
but my grandparents were even cooler and they didn't touch a musical instrument.
LOL! Didn't you ever hear the old expression, "Don't teach your grandad how to suck eggs"???
Nice, though, to realise that some of our 'grand-kids' get it! Makes you cooler than the rest of your generation, anyway! Should be some comfort to you! 😉
Lol very loudly here 😂😂
Sonja Cristina back in 1971, so gorgeous. Great song. Still have it on 7" single!
Just found a true gem. The girl, the music, the video editing! All!
(Only like 53 years late!)
Check the band "Manassas" also plays on this show.. Greetings from Greece 🇬🇷
Blows my mind that I’m still discovering amazing music from so long ago
A great band. Luckily, in the early 70's I saw Curved Air live at a small venue. I still remember being in awe with this music and even today I like to play it. As they say, good music never dies.
@david edbrooke-coffin I saw them at Malvern Winter Gardens on April 7th, 1973. Supporting band was Gary Moore Band, who were also good!
Did some research and you probably were at this concert:
July 3, 1971 Winter Gardens, Weston-Super-Mare, ENG (Supported by Mark Ellingtom & Mick Abrahams Band)
@david edbrooke-coffin Hah! I grew up in an equally small town, Lydney. It’s about a 1 hour drive away from WSM. We used to go there for a nice day trip in the old days (the 60’s)!!
IKR!
Well you ain't finding any today.
Nothing will ever match the 60's and 70's for quality music...they were and still are, The Best!
I agree
Great decades - but still fantastic new mucic being released every year!
please tell me what@@progrockrules
Yep, the nusic will last forever unlike us!!!! 😁 And unlike the crap made today!!!
And the 80s.
Hypnotic and mystical. Shes so very beautiful.
Fact, was friend F Mercury
That's awesome
Never heard of Curved Air until today. But this track is sensational. A true gem from the time when rock was still original!
"Easy" is probably my favorite Curved Air song.
Now you're initiated ❤❤
me too, I Like this song.
Curved Air were brilliant, saw them a few times, this video doesn’t show them at their best. John x
Curved Air were a phenomenal band even among prog rock they have a quite unique distinctive voice and a sensual one.
I think Kate Bush looked intensively at this band
Like most young men I was madly obsessed with Sonja. She was everything a young man wished for. Hugely talented, beautiful beyond words and so mysterious. Happy days early 70s.Saw them twice live Birmingham town hall and another venue I forget.. Superb band. Bought all of their early albums and I still have them. Today's world makes me miss those times so much..
What's surprising is that she sings a low alto line here (as a tenor, I can sing with her). Female rock or pop singers are almost always in the high female register. This low (but very clear and both strong and sensitive) voice creates some very unusual tension. Great.
❤❤❤❤
I saw them at Birmingham Town Hall c1971. Tremendous band.
@@edwardtreadwell3859 Ha ha how strange. We were both there 32 odd years ago and our paths cross again.
Yep...and I was there too!
I've watched them in Rio this month and I was a great experience. Sonja is 74 and her voice and her energy is amazing.
Hi my name is Pablo Ruiz Picasso
The first Single I bought with my own money - After my mum gave me the money that is.
How old were you, like 30?
We live in the age of low quality music, stupid lyrics, low standart singers and all music instruments came from a computer, this band is like Ice cream to my ears, wonderfull group, Sonja's voice is amazing.
This is what I really miss about the 70s and early 80s music. You're right. I am subjected every day at work to some utter trash on a local radio station.
"low standart singers" standart as in statues as that would be art that stands. Music today sounds very good in my ears and a lot it has something to say so I do not understand where you are at with what you say.
She was my first crush x
To Razahillearievlis. NOT a word you say is true - except about Sonja Kristina's amazing voice. You are living in the past. In fact, today, the voices have never been better, because record companies realise at last, that a good voice is like them printing money!
@bobair2 to me, the problem is the music itself. It's very "fake" (I guess), very little instruments, just synthesised through a computer, and there seems to be a lot less feeling within a song. They've become a lot less complex and less interesting to listen to, and the bit of good music that still comes out is suppressed because it isn't marketable anymore
I first saw Curved Air when I was a 15 year old schoolboy at the Roundhouse in 1975. Standing directly in front of the stage watching Sonja, I was utterly smitten. ❤
What a creative time for music. So many good bands created music during the late 60’s earlyb70’s timeframe. A timeless classic.
We are so fortunate to have these
Beat-Club tapes still around,
and in incredible condition.
Darryl Way would go on to front
his own band,"DARRYL WAY'S WOLF",
and the first 3 by them were excellent.
The clothes of the 70s - bring them all back!!!
2024.... Who's here today 👍
me!!
Greetings from Greece 🇬🇷💯🥁
I think I am in love with a singer I shall never meet. She’s hauntingly beautiful.
And she's now about 75.
Her name is Sonja Kristina and she is now 71 years old. She was once married to Stewart Copeland, the drummer for The Police.
nah, it's the voice, you didn't watch this clip muted first.
and upon preview i thought "all this song (title) lacks is female singer"
hehe....

@@lizboo2867 Yeah, I just guessed.
I saw Curved Air in Derby in 1976 and again in 2015 and on both occasions, they played with a mixture of drive and fluidity and Sonya Kristina was magnetic, her voice cutting through the music
had this LP in my 20s , used to fall asleep with my headphones on listening to this ,,Conan, old man UK
Just heard this on Radio Caroline,,, holy moly,,, gorgeous. Why are 70'sgirls the best ??.
No lip or nose piercing or tattoos
Always said the same.....
Because we just were ,.... hip ! 😂😂👍
Yep, great little song. it reached number 4 in UK charts in Aug 1971
Tremendously talented musicians in Curved Air.
I saw Sonja Kristina performing in 1970 when I was 16. It was just before Curved Air was formed. I've been in love with her ever since. 🥰
Conna blame yer..
The two major to minor transitions are historically masterful. I have never heard it pulled off so effectively as in this song in any other. Simply wonderful.

Super Band
Too good to be popular. First time I've ever heard this band. Now I'm a fan.
This song made the UK Top 5 + they had 3 top 20 UK albums. That implies a degree of popularity.
Saw them in 70s, stilll got them on vinyl ❤
@@normanseaman6397 The one with the lyrics printed on the actual album? That was a first, must be worth a packet now!
@@ThinPicks the album was a picture disc. But, it was a lacquer. My original is cracking and unplayable. I was given the mid 00s reissue... I play that and look at the original
Saw them at a smaller venue in Heidelberg, circa 1972. Last song the guitarist/keyboard player with that cool hat turned his synth around and let the audience play and I was one of the players, so I guess I performed with Curved Air!
How very cool! :-)
@@mightyV444 nice! i played one song with Robert Jr Lockwood at a party once
Great story!
@Billybob Ireland "Far out"? Blast from the Past! Groovy!
this song is so much better than it should be. that grungey breakdown is intoxicating.
Pretty innovative

Insane amount of talent in that band
The presenter and the singer are absolutely fantastic and put many of todays ''celebrities'' in the shade.
it was a much less up-tight age than the present
Always loved this song! So atmospheric and mysterious song! Great song from a great band!
WOW!
Never heard this live before.
BLOODY BRILLIANT!

I havn't heard this since (say) 1972 - amazing to pick it up again - what a track.
Amazing band , amazing song. Sonia is stunning !
Saw them live, front row, 1971. Loved them..
I can't stop watching this. It's great :)
First saw them live in 1974 or 75 in Portsmouth when I was lucky enough to be a roadie for the day carrying their kit into the venue. Fell in love with Sonja immediately of course. What a singer and what a band. Air Conditioning is one of the great albums of any era.
Only one word to describe this song: Magnificent!
What a gorgeous voice!!
First heard this song through my dad, who has now passed away.
I had totally forgotten about it until I heard it on planet rock the other month.
Looking at sonja reminds me that my mum was the same age as her when this video was made :')
I wish I could experience that time. Gods, the music...
Wow!! Never heard of this group, but now I’m a fan👍😀
I've only been aware of this group for 51 years.

@@alangeorgebarstow Think how lucky we are to have this music in our heads all these years... WOW! (That's about when I first heard of them, too, 51 years ago.)
I saw Curved Air a few times in the early 1970's at various venues in South London and always enjoyed their engaging and musically proficient performances. They had some great songs - "It happened today", "Stretch", and "Vivaldi" I remember particularly well. Sonia, Darryl and Francis were a great combination.........

Seen them once live, as a supporting act of The Soft Machine. Enjoyed it.
RIP Francis, very sad news last week. Part of a great group of people who made one of the greatest live albums ever - 801 Live! Recorded at the Queen Elizabeth Hall with Eno, Phil Manzanera, Simon Philips, Bill McCormack and the late great Lloyd Watson, it was the first live album of it's kind with direct inputs from individual instruments to the mobile studio mixing desk. If you've never listened to it I would encourage you to do so, absolutely brilliant.
I met Phil Manzanera when I was working in a TV studio and asked him to sign my book to the "801" - think he was pleasantly surprised when a teen of the 80s wanted his sig on a book - but then I was listening to Another Green World in 1986 when others were about to go Madchester!
@@Pommy381125 Francis Monkman died? No!!! I didn't know that. Was a huge Curved Air fan - and his music for "The Long Good Friday" remains brilliant!
Thank you for the tip.. I've seen the cover a couple of times.... but I never guessed who was in the band.... A pity they didn't cover some Curved Air music.
Fully concur with the assessment of 801 Live. Utterly awesome, musicianship off the scale. Simon Philips and Bill McCormack - the rhythm sections' rhythm section. My copy's signed by Phil Manzanera.
I completely forgot about this track . A really good reminder of my youth😂
Great Track. Beautiful Singer, great voice and great melody
Imagine a band with Sonja, Annie Haslam and Jaqui McShee - on shared vocals! Just one of my fantasy line-ups.
I just got chills thinking about this. What a dream!
What a triplet! How about include Maddy Prior and change it to a quartet!?
@@lucasperillo1934 Great idea. Judi Tzuke as well?
And add the gorgeous Jill Saward (Fusion Orchestra & Shakatak)
@@julessmith9549 Nice addition to the line-up.
Wonderful !

Sonja Christina was married to Police drummer Stewart Copeland from 1980 to 1991.
I did not know that...I want to see some live footage of this band w/Stewart drumming.
Great song and she is beautiful.
I remember buying this on a 45 when it was released. I still have it in my collection.
Where have all the beautiful and extremely talented women gone? SONJA rules my airwaves forever.
They're all in my bedroom. Didn't fancy Sonja, though.
Saw Curved Air live at Wolverhampton. Fantastic group and Sonja’s voice was mesmerising. An incredibly beautiful woman with no fillers, just natural beauty. Oh happy days🥰
Any one know the name of the guitarist with the hat , I suspect he's the uncle of my ex
This takes me back to 1971 summertime in Lewes East Sussex it's pure magic I've always loved this music . Maxine sobers
Lov this song I was 16. Such a long time.ago now 😢❤
Francis Monkman what a musician!!! Sonia Kristina Is incredible
Passed away last year ('23)...
I saw Curved Air in 1974 at Maidstone Art College, Kent, UK
50 years ago we all loved Sonja - those eyes...
I saw Curved Air at Birmingham Town Hall in 1971. She was wearing the same velvet trousers. Great gig.
I'm an old hippie and I missed out on this band. Pretty good sound.
Me too old hippy and rock yes peace and love to all 6years old now all long hair has gone shame 66
I'm not a hippy ...was born in 1980 so missed out on the good years ..I listen to hippy music though ...I also like 60s psych stuff too ...bands like the 13th floor elevators and strawberry alarm clock....the 60s was a great era for music ....anyone here like frank zappa ?
@@chrisjenkins5846 Frank Zappa! Sure do my friend, from the early Mothers Of Invention stuff, and then right through his career. A completely unique musician with a very interesting mind. And like the great man said 'Absurdity is the only reality'!
Me too. I remember Curved Air as being part of the 'atmosphere' (but can't remember the tracks).
@@indricotherium4802 Shame. I was born in 1950 and came of age in the sixties and seventies. I dug Curved Air. Better late than never, though.😎✌🏽☮️🎸
I remember hearing this when i was a teenager... Still a great band today..
I am so glad that they keep these videos that were filmed in color a great historical document to the 1970s. It’s too bad didn’t have more color film in the 1960s that would’ve been awesome🎩🎩🎩🎩💰💰💰💰💰🎶🎶🎶🇺🇸
In the sixties videos were taped on Ampex tapes. They were poorly saved in archives, which caused the erasure of its contents. It's a worldwide tragedy.
Wow.... how beautiful and talented she was! Supported by a bunch of superb musicians!

were still playing live about 10 years ago, saw a gig advertised outside a pub in Yeovil (UK)
Great band and music. The late 60’s early 70,s is the best on music. Só many creative musicians and real bands. Cheers.
Brillant, know them since my youth in the 70s....
Loved this band for nigh on 40 years and still dig them today! Even had the pleasure of meeting Sonja at an after show at clumber park nr Worksop in 2011 and got her autograph too ! Would’ve loved to chatted more to her about current affairs and the state of the world! Hope to see them on tour soon
I love my old school music!
You never stop discovering more epic bands that never got their recognition because there was no smartphones
Saw Curved Air in '71 at The Filmore east. The show was Curved Air, Edgar Winre's White Trash, Emerson, Lake & Palmer Cost $5.50
Takes me right back there - this was never off the record player, I still have the original single (somewhere??)
Everdance the B side. what a song
This is god damn enchanting
It's all about the voice!
Saw this band live they were stunning.
The good vibration of 70s!
Love from Switzerland.
Never heard this band. But they are excellent. Great song.
They made a lot of great songs; I'd recommend that you try to find their albums and give them a good listen to, I don't think you'll be disappointed. The fellow who played keys and guitar in this video, Francis Monkman, later became a member of the Classic/Rock fusion band SKY, along with Herbie Flowers (Bass), Kevin Peek (Guitar), John Williams (Guitar) and Tristan Fry (drums) - Flowers is known for the famous acoustic bass line on Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side".
I remember this CLASSIC ' My Brother bought it Vinyl of course ' Sounds a good etc❤❤❤😍 today
Quirky and I love it. Reminds me of Renaissance - Scheherazade album. Beautiful voice!
Thanks, Beat-Club for another great video. Curved Air were very underrated.

One of the very best singles of all time, and Sonja is probably my favourite female vocalist of all time, so magical and often haunting. Sounds kind of Irish even though she was from deepest Essex.
RIP the great Francis monkman 🙏🙏🙏
Damn I didn’t know he had passed 😢 absolutely loved all the stuff he did for KPM and Bruton labels loads of classics 😊
Superb, as I recall, in the earliest Sky concerts too
I remember I had the LP " Curved Air" which featured this track. It had a picture of a Tiger Moth on the cover. It was a marvellous record!
