9:50 I've noticed the difference with Thomas' model in this shot from Hide and Peep. On the half-hour version, the modelers used Thomas' original Perspex (plastic) model when they were filming the scenes at Knapford Yards. However, when they reshot that scene again for the individual episode version, they used Thomas' brass model of Thomas and the Magic Railroad and used in the HiT era in Series 8-11 and in some scenes in Series 6 and a handful of time in Series 7. A clear difference is that the funnel is thicker on the Prespex model while it's thinner on the brass one and the front cab windows are a little more higher on the brass one.
@@carloso5910official exactly - and, through some more research, it appears they reshot A LOT of scenes that didn't make it to air on PBS/Nick Jr. Seems all the reshoot were filmed during The Great Discovery being filmed.
While some of the alternate angles don't differ too much weirdly but I do feel they weirdly give the episodes a different vibe at times it's a tad hard to explain but I feel like the reason why the footage varies because they were done to accommodate different TV aspect ratios. If you look at the TV airings especially, some of the alternate footage kinda makes sets and scenery look much more closer together than in the finals in which they are much more spread apart.
I do wonder if that was a factor in not using the finalized episode masters for the Series 11 episodes featured in the half-hour versions. Weirdly, some of the stuff however seems to have been entirely reshot later on in filming. Dirty Work's Tidmouth scenes have different set ups if look towards the right of the screen in both versions. The changed shots of James at the castle has everything in a different position, matching what see in a behind the scenes picture for The Great Discovery. We know that's the reshot version, because the original half-hour shots and the sad James close up match how the background flags are set up in the night Castle shots. Hector the Horrid's original shots seem to have Hector's pupils not properly alined, and is VERY noticeable. Likely the reason a lot of those shot redone later. The rest of the changed shots, I have no clue what's up with them. Likely that they're a mix of alternate angles and original versions of shots done before later being reshot. We know these are the half-hour versions are the original versions as the several sound effects in the final versions are timed to those original shots (best example of the opening to Don't Be Silly Billy). So it's possible that some of the other changed shots, like Dirty Work's day castle scene, were shot during the filming of The Great Discovery, which seems to have been a different shoot from the standard gauge stuff for the Series 11 episodes. Other cases could simply be the editor asked to use different section takes at the last minute. Whatever the case, these early versions were likely sent off to be edited into the half-hour versions, and likely unable to swap out episode masters for those five.
I genuinely never knew about these alternate versions until I saw your video, and as someone who's been into TTTE/TUGS behind the scenes for years I find that surprising. But great job on this, it's very interesting
1:50 I'm gonna be honest, It was really pointless of the crew to refilm this close up of James if they weren't going to do the next one. They should've left it the way it was.

So if The Unlucky Tug did the differences of the remastered versions of the Thomas episodes, if he did his retrospective on series 11; I wonder what his reaction on the two different versions of the series 11 episodes (though only 5 had the different versions)
No, more episodes had footage reshot later too, although no footage has resurfaced for the other 20 episodes. Let me explain The fall 2006/spring 2007 film shoot was shot in three parts. Part 1; the Standard Gauge S11 episodes, 2; Narrow Gauge episodes/TGD, 3; The Great Discovery. For some reason, they reshot MANY scenes and shots during part 3 of the shoot. Because of this, promotional pictures and some behind the scenes photos actually show off these original shoots. There's a behind the scenes picture showing them filming an alternate version of the opening shot to Toby's Triumph and some for an alternate version of Dream On where Spencer boosts to Thomas at Tidmouth Sheds. Along with that, there's some shots that will have the set change between shots. An example of this happens when Thomas picks up the storyteller at the docks in "Thomas and the Storyteller", where the clouds and Big Mickey's hook change position for one shot. I outta make a video talking about this lol
DIRTY WORK 9 different shots HECTOR THE HORRID 15 different shots THOMAS AND THE SPACESHIP 4 different shots DON'T BE SILLY BILLY 17 different shots HIDE AND PEEP 20 different shots
What was the point of reshooting so much footage? There really isn’t much difference between the original and reshot footage, they both look perfectly fine.
It appears that nearly every shot that was changed was refilmed during The Great Discovery. The normal S11 episodes and TGD were filmed at different times. Exceptions to this are 2:23 and 7:10 - those just use different parts of footage that's in the final episode.

Seems like they reshot them for widescreen, mostly
I think the original shots were filmed in Widescreen, but the airings were 4:3, so they had to crop them to fit 4:3

I can imagine this as the Unlucky Tug’s pick of the week in his Season 11 retrospective (whenever that comes out).
As well as Gordon and the mechanic, Hector the horrid, Wash Behind your buffers, and Cool Truckings
Well tomorrow’s the day we find out.

Well, this video wasn’t the pick of the week, but it was mentioned by Nic in the video, so that’s good.
U called it

There's a point to be made that in about every single changed shot, the clouds never match the position of one another lol
@@specialtrees237Wait did they have airing 47 experience and airing 42 hopes and dreams
The Unlucky Tug was right. The way Thomas episodes are distributed can never be consistent.

3:44 The Buffers is flying away on the Left
I wouldn’t be surprised if PBS Retro used these different takes
Well, they could still have archived all of the model era airings that they required from HiT themselves.
They more than likely will.
They likely will - don't think they ever updated the half-hour masters to have the reshoot/individual versions for these 5 episodes.
The half-hour or individual one?
