I remember loving Sprout to pieces as I was growing up. Trust Thomas and Heroes were the two episodes I managed to catch viewings of on that channel. Absolutely nostalgic.
Sprout was actually where I was first introduced to Season 4 between 2008-2011. Prior to Sprout, I had never seen those iconic Narrow Gauge episodes we all adore. Most of my home media at that point was, oddly enough, only focused on seasons 1-3, 5-8. Watching Sprout was like entering a new world at that point.
Sprout’s my jam too. I’ve mostly seen Miller Era episodes, a few Hit Era episodes and definitely a lot of episodes from seasons 1-7. I’ve also seen seasons 30-42 of Sesame Street on there. Yes. Those are the Sesame Street episodes that featured the surprise visit to Elmo’s World at the end.
There is a factor bringing Thomas to the US that many British fans seem to overlook: DIFFERENT BROADCASTING STANDARDS. If a whole sitcom is needed to he created to get Sodor onto us and then Canadian television's via PBS, then so be it
Oh wow. I never knew how great Shining Time Station is. Just from the clips alone, I can tell that the humor, characters and writing make this an awesome show. Added to the watch list!
Personally I don't see Universal Kids lasting much longer. Maybe Mattel, Wildbrain, NBCUniversal, PBS and HBO could get together and create a similar network to Sprout.
Sprout is truly a haven for British children’s shows airing in America (Especially the ones made by HiT Entertainment or Chapman Studios). Besides Thomas, there’s also Pingu, Fireman Sam, Bob The Builder, Fifi & The Flowertots, Roary The Racing Car, and yeah, even Clangers. The only show that I wish made it on there is Postman Pat.
Before child me found out about PBS Kids, Sprout was my go-to whenever I wanted to watch stuff on tv. I remember watching several classic, hit and nitrogen Thomas episodes live, and I even remember watching a clip from Gordon And The Engineer on their website! I remember watching Berenstain Bears on there a hell of a lot more, though, and I don’t really blame myself since it’s honestly as equally a good kids show as Thomas, and *oh my god why did they need to go so hard on the score -*
This was definitely my show back then! I definitely loved all the Thomas on Sprout but I say all the opening and learning segments on PBS was definitely my way to go! Those are definitely the days and they definitely need to bring that back!
17:18 Fun fact, Thomas actually aired on cartoon network in Mexico, i remember watching bwba on that channel one Sunday morning (the classic series also aired there)
"Shining Time Station" was how I first knew about Thomas the Tank Engine as a toddler. It always came on after "Barney & Friends" on my local PBS Station that time (until "Teletubbies" replaced it when the show left the channel a few years later).
The memories of watching Thomas on Cable TV are always the pieces of nostalgia memories we can ever have, and while I understand that now we're entering the video streaming era so that everyone can watch their favorite shows of their own opinion or choice, those memories will never be forgotten. And we do have The Thomas TV Patrol and other recordings that we never saw in childhood that are resurfaced here for our viewing pleasures.
From all the flack HiT Entertainment has been getting, even back then. I think they had a great intention on getting Thomas back on American television after nearly two to three years of new episodes only coming out on home video (at least that was in the case of Season 6 and some of Season 7 during this time period; 2002-2004). Sure, sales on VHS and DVD would still keep on growing because of the high quality merchandise and (of course) DVD and VHS sales going at an all time high, but it makes you wonder how Season 6 remained to be released only on home video in the US until 2005 when only six episodes of Season 6 were re-narrated for PBS and Nick Jr. by then US and UK narrators at the time, Michael Angelis and Michael Brandon. Had it not been for them, would the show have ended there at Season 7, even with Michael Brandon as the narrator and Mike O'Donnell and Junior Campbell as the remaining composers?
@@fanofeverything30465 Well, there are two redubbed by Michael Angelis for only one US release, and the other six being redubbed by Michael Brandon. Wouldn't that make 8?
Sprout was the most nostalgic channel for me considering I would watch episodes on there and on youtube back then. I miss the channel a lot and wished Thomas stayed on. Oh well, at least we have the memories.
I remember when Thomas and the Magic Railroad was released in 2000. That's when I really fell in love with the show. I stopped watching, and even liking, it for a while but then in 2018 I saw that Build-A-Bear had released a Thomas bear with a train conductor outfit and it rekindled my love for the show.
I remember the first time I realized Thomas was on Sprout and was so excited and was even more excited when an episode came on I had never seen before (Mind That Bike) . Such a great memory for me
A fine piece of work Dennis. I really enjoyed all the cut scenes to the Random shows Thomas appeared on. And this video had shows that I never even knew about or new Thomas aired on. I only grew up with most of sprout and late PBS. This was mainly due to the fact that I mainly watched the episodes on DVD and later UA-cam in 2012. Although I still collected US DVDs until the end. Anyway great job Dennis! I enjoyed every second.😉
I’m an Arizonan, and I used to watch Thomas on EI8HT HD (Now called Arizona PBS) every day and watch the VHS tapes. Mostly the VHS tapes, George Carlin would always warm my heart with his soothing voice and words. Now I watch his standup comedies and it’s funny. I even heard Ringo do the job and listen to The Beatles.
Cartoon Network is really fixing the issues that plagued Nick Jr. With all of Cartoonito's scheduling shifts, All Engines Go is one of the only shows to remain in its original hour timeslot, while other shows keep getting downgraded to smaller slots. If only the show itself was better.
Great video! I also used to watch Thomas on PBS Kids Sprout when I was little. I don't hate Thomas All Engines Go by the way, but I DO understand why many Thomas fans hate it.
I will admit, I also had some really fond memories of seeing episodes of Thomas & Friends on television when I was a kid as well. The only shows I never got the chance to watch were Shining Time Station and Storytime With Thomas (I wasn't around yet when those shows were airing in the 90s at the time). However, I distinctly remember watching at least a few episodes from Series 6 and 7 when they aired on PBS back in the early 2000s (I was only 3 or 4 at the time), and seeing some of the newer episodes from the HIT Entertainment era on the same channel. I also remember watching episodes from the classic era of the show on Sprout when I was like, 9 or 10, and that was when I started really getting into Thomas after I discovered UA-cam and saw uploads of the classic series. I also remember being introduced to the Nitrogen Studios era of the show from watching Hero Of The Rails and a few episodes of Series 13. Up until that point, I would only watch episodes of the show on either VHS or DVD. And after Series 16 had ended, I never really followed up on the new seasons that followed (like Series 17-24). And of course, I also have genuine distaste for All Engines Go like pretty much every other Thomas fan out there. However, I will give praise to AEG on just a few things: two of the characters, which are Kana and Sandy (I'm not counting Carly since she's a gantry crane in the actual T&F series, and AEG just turned her into a crane engine like Harvey), and Gordon's voice actor, Neil Crone. But anyway, everything that this video talked about is almost 100% relatable to me, and I'm very happy to have embarked on a nostalgic journey with everyone's favorite number one blue tank engine back then, and I will continue to revel in the nostalgia.
Ah, Shining Time... also in that show there was another set of puppet characters that were a band and lived in the jukebox. The main guy of that group sure loved it whenever a nickel would enter the machine.
I forgot to comment earlier that this documentary you made is actually quite good. It's a fine piece of work following you showcasing the history of Thomas' TV time in America.
NGL, the PBS airings of the Hit era coupled with the VHS and DVD classic series releases were my childhood in a nutshell. I have vivid memories of several season 8 and 9 episodes airing for the first time.

I used to watch Thomas through Sprout when I was younger when they showed Classic and HiT Era episodes, I still have very vivid memories of the Sunnyside Up and Goodnight Shows
PBS kids and Sprout was the ones I grew up with. I had VHS recordings of Thomas on PBS kids. My Aunt said it used to come on the weekends (seasons 8-10).
Pretty cool video and nice to see at least a mention of Mister Moose's Fun Time I actually met Paul Pistore who voiced and puppeteered Mister Moose on Discord
I think Mattel, WildBrain, PBS, HBO and NBCUniversal need to get together and bring back Sprout like it was between 2005 to early 2011. Universal Kids isn't worth sticking around. They just play hours of the same shows.
I actually had PBS sprout when I was way younger and I remember seeing specials like Misty Island rescue some hit error and some season 12 episodes a but the only classic series episode I remember seeing was all at sea
Amazing vid this brought back to many memories especially pbs kids sprout that was the best 9 year old me refused to go to sleep without having a he goodnight show on in the background
What's interesting to note is that most of Thomas' run on Nickelodeon was shafted to Nick Jr.. The airings and new episodes became really sparse on the main channel, especially when BWBA rolled along. On another note I also read that Shining Time was cancelled because of the popularity of other PBS shows like Arthur eclipsing that of the former program.
Another awesome video Dennis! Very well made and informal. Here's my history of Thomas on TV: I was born in 2007, and I watched PBS, so I briefly saw the late HiT Model Era, and the early Nitrogen Era. After that though, I really only watched Thomas on DVD and UA-cam, so that ended kind of quickly. However, I do remember watching both the bumpers and the actual new movie The Adventure Begins movie on either Nick Jr or PBS in 2015
I remember seeing this on Sprout and watching the DVDs and VHSs like Make someone happy, the best of Gordon, cranky bugs, Percy’s Chocolate Crunch, Thomas comes to breakfast, Thomas and the magic railroad and Thomas and the special letter These where my childhood
HiT era on PBS kids was my shit back in the day. I just loved they way they structured it. I don't care if the HiT era was bad to some people. This is the best days of my childhood
I have caught Thomas on PBS on a few occasions as a kid. I vaguely remember watching seasons 10-11. HoweverI think when the show hit season 12, they moved it to a weekend only block. I remember watching 13-16 only on weekends, along with Bob the Builder. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, that might have just been my station.
WNET Thirteen New York(my pbs) aired Thomas and Friends originally on Sundays. Then by 2011/2012 they moved to weekdays when they extended the pbs kids shows timeslot to 1pm instead of noon. Different stations had different timeslots but people refer to WNET Thirteen as they are PBS's headquarters as well as make some pbs kids shows themselves along with WGBH.
Shining Time Station was my go to show from my early days as a toddler until Kindergarten. Every time that I watched the show I always try to remember what Thomas stories were in each one. Ringo's narrations were the easy ones as they were in order of video releases. George Carlin's narrations were out of order as there are times were he's narrating one that Ringo already did a US dub, one were he had yet to do a US dub and a Series 3 dub. I also did enjoy collecting the videos growing up however there are times were there would be dubs that you could only watch on Shining Time Station or dubs that were only released on video.
4:55 that reminds me of this dream I had a while ago where Thomas and I were in a bedroom with the curtains drawn and he said something like "it doesn't matter what colour Ruth is, she's my friend"
17:45, I am planning to released several Realistic RWS like Adaptations of the All Engines Go Episodes with some alterations like the Wheels Moving and Jumping cut out and Have Kana be more New to Sodor and Thomas's Promise will have the Most changes
Sprout is definitely my favorite channel, it was treating Thomas & Friends a lot more attention than PBS Kids cuz back then I barely see him on that channel especially in the morning! It’s a shame the channel changed after Universal brought the rights! Though I was pleased when it was on Nick Jr at the time and even that channel gave Thomas more attention, those two channels are definitely my favorites! I have so much memories of these variety channels that aired Thomas during my childhood!
Very interesting to hear about how a show I loved as a kid, aired in another country. I grew up watching Thomas on Nick Jr in Ireland, I remember they showed classic episodes, as well as newer episodes, however they slowly moved away from showing classic Thomas, but I learnt how to use the internet at a very early age, so that helped me get my Thomas fix.
PBS Sprout was where I watched Thomas CONSISTENTLY. We always had it as channel 295 on DirecTV, but that channel has gone the way of the dumpster nowadays imo. Actually, until Power Rangers Samurai came out, Sprout was the only channel I’d watch (unless I was watching Mythbusters or Dirty Jobs on the DVR).
Shining time station was the best show That pbs ever aired I remember the episode when schemer made a sandwich spread with chili powder and cocoa powder A the one with The Christmas episode that lasted one hour that had The hobo song that mention a hobo spending Christmas time alone
you mention "If you told me Thomas would end up on THIS (Cartoon Network) channel, I would've told you you were nuts." *_BUT_* Series 4 and 5 aired on CN only in the UK in 1998
PBS Kids and Sprout were absolutely clutch for me when watching Thomas. I remember during the weekdays I’d watch it on Sprout and I remember getting up on Saturday mornings and turning on PBS Kids to watch it again with addition to Dinosaur Train too.
Also, yeah I agree, Nick Jr screwed the show over, my provider had just dropped Nick Jr not long before Thomas moved, so I couldn't really watch it, and Nick Jr even made a no-DVDs rule with Mattel, ensuring that people who don't have the channel have no way of seeing new Thomas.
I usually watched in on VCDs in early 2010s,also saw the season 12 on Cartoon Network/Nickelodeon .Also Thomas jumped channels a lot in the Southeast Asia region .Had a great time watching the early seasons but fell off during the early CGI era .I remember those dumb but funny learning segments.I was surprised when Toby banked Gordon up the hill.Great and treasured memories👍🏻
I still have fond memories of having Thomas airing after Bob The Builder and Sesame Street on WETA Washington at 11PM daily. I like when PBS stations have Bob and Thomas paired up, even WETA.
This is very informative! I know this is mainly about the US TV timeline but I think it's worth it to point out when Season 8 and 9 aired on Nick Jr. in the UK, Michael Angelis re-dubbed the Season 6 episodes and Hartshorne composed new music for Seasons 6 and 7.
i can tell you for a fact that pbs sprout did air some of the model series at night (mostly s12 eps) on a show called "the good night show" even after the cgi change
Well researched video, but what I take most from this is seeing it from the perspective of another generation. I grew up with Shining Time Station on PBS. I didn't have cable so I only saw Storytime with Thomas once. So between my mom going back to work full-time and no longer being able to record STS when I was in school and Thomas' return to PBS in 2004, I fell out of the loop. When Thomas came back, I was appalled by what I saw. To me the show had been completely infantilized, yet this is fond childhood memories for you, like STS was for me. I thought the plots were dull, Michael Brandon was too monotone for me and the learning segments seemed to talk down to the children. My first memory of Sprout was putting up a poster for it at my local railroad museum for when we were hosting Thomas for two weekends. I didn't start paying attention until the Brennerssaince, which I also enjoyed. That being said while PBS still had inconveinent airtimes, I watched it on UA-cam at my conveinence. It's interesting that from here, our perspectives are almost the same. Though at this point I think we're both viewing it from the perspective of an older fan. It's interesting to see how people have different views of a show that ran for so long.
I remember watching season 7 to 8 of thomas in Discovery Kids, man even though everyone hates those HiT era seasons, they still bring me good memories :).
I like your videos. I was wondering what happened to a bunch of your themed episode videos like the best fall or best spring episodes. Am I confusing those with a different channel?
And speaking of clips that Muhammad The A1 said, I'm surprised that James The PBS Kid hadn't even upload more classic PBS Kids (PTV Park) on KCET program and pledge breaks through the years yet including KCET Kids Club. First of all, I saw the PTV Park promo for Shining Time Station during one of the program breaks on KCET. It uses the extended theme song music video for the series as a backdrop to the footage plays various different clips from seasons 2 and 3. It was after Barney If the shoe fits... in rerun. Man. I wish any subscription channel can upload that as a brand new upload to this year.
I remember loving Sprout to pieces as I was growing up. Trust Thomas and Heroes were the two episodes I managed to catch viewings of on that channel. Absolutely nostalgic.

HiT era on PBS kids was my shit back in the day. I just loved they way they structured it. I don't care if the HiT era was bad to some people. This is the best days of my childhood
Honestly when watching this, I almost completely forgot about PBS Sprout
And then pbs sold it to universal, did they made money out of it
I have caught Thomas on PBS on a few occasions as a kid.
I totally forgot all about PBS Sprout until today, thanks for reminding me about this era
I’m from 2004, so I saw it on PBS throughout my time. Never knew a lot of this stuff, nice video!
I remember seeing Original episodes air on Cartoon Network way back
4:55 that reminds me of this dream I had a while ago where Thomas and I were in a bedroom with the curtains drawn and he said something like "it doesn't matter what colour Ruth is, she's my friend"
11:03 I remember the same just after super why for the brenner era
Yeah I remember watching Thomas and friends on PBS Kids when I was a little kid like 3, 4 or five years old.
Fuck, I'd never think how hard PBS Kids bumper would hit.
13:56 I wish they make a kipper the dog reboot he’s my 2nd favorite hit entertainment show I use to watch on Netflix when I was 6
Very interesting to hear about how a show I loved as a kid, aired in another country.
I remember Shining Time Station very well! Wow I'm old.. lol
PBS Sprout was my favorite sure it had thomas and friends but as a kid it meant everything to growing up in the 2000s or 2010s kid
Shining time station was the best show That pbs ever aired I remember the episode when schemer made a sandwich spread with chili powder and cocoa powder
A the one with The Christmas episode that lasted one hour that had The hobo song that mention a hobo spending Christmas time alone
you mention "If you told me Thomas would end up on THIS (Cartoon Network) channel, I would've told you you were nuts."
*_BUT_* Series 4 and 5 aired on CN only in the UK in 1998
On my pbs station, Thomas would air at 5:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays
I’m glad I grew up watching it on PBS Kids and PBS Kids Sprout
Babe wake up
New DuckStudios video
My PBS station KETC used to air Thomas every Wednesday at 12:30 pm CST before it aired daily
I used to watch it on KETC as well.
As I grew up in Britain
I saw it every morning and wouldn’t miss it
Milkshake would be my favourite broadcaster
For so long I wished someone would make a video like this!
I still have fond memories of having Thomas airing after Bob The Builder and Sesame Street on WETA Washington at 11PM daily.
I like when PBS stations have Bob and Thomas paired up, even WETA.
Bruh, I M E S S E D with sprout, I remember watching Thomas and The Magic Railroad on Sprout when it was shown at night :)
Find it odd how they aired that during a time when they only showed CGI stuff. The new kids (at the time) were probably confused.
This is very informative! I know this is mainly about the US TV timeline but I think it's worth it to point out when Season 8 and 9 aired on Nick Jr. in the UK, Michael Angelis re-dubbed the Season 6 episodes and Hartshorne composed new music for Seasons 6 and 7.
gonna love this
17:12 or as I like to call it Thomas Chibi (the higher ups at Mattel are secretly RWBY Chibi fans)
It would be nice if pbs continued reruns of shining time station for the newer generation or a spinoff series with the same name
I Loved watching Shining Time Station and Thomas and Friends on FOX Family Channel and Nickelodeon/Nick Jr.!❤️📺🎶🚂👍🏻
i can tell you for a fact that pbs sprout did air some of the model series at night (mostly s12 eps) on a show called "the good night show" even after the cgi change
PBS and sprout were my childhood
I remember watching season 7 to 8 of thomas in Discovery Kids, man even though everyone hates those HiT era seasons, they still bring me good memories :).
Let me guess, Latin America
I like your videos. I was wondering what happened to a bunch of your themed episode videos like the best fall or best spring episodes. Am I confusing those with a different channel?
Yeah, they're unlisted because they're old, but you can still find them in the playlists section
@@duckstudios3687 Oh I understand now.
Your mention of sprout ran me over with a nostalgia train
