In English this ancient hymn is : Holy God, Holy Almighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. The Gospel is processed into the altar area. If a bishop is present, his procession occurs at this time also from the nave into the altar.
St. Paul's is a totally different experience than St. John's. They do both take you away from a busy city into a tranquil, meditative space. Pro Organo recorded the 6 rededicatnon recitals by 3Americans and 3 Frenchman. Quimby Pipe Organs restored the instrument and has history and pictures some never seen before, of the organ's 'home' stories above the cathedral's main floor. The original design & construction had Roman arches and the nave ceiling is 41'(?) higher than the choir.
@radketim It depends on terminology. St. Peter's is a basilica, not a cathedral. It's a lot like trying to describe the world's largest pipe organ. Do we go with Wanamaker's, which all (or mostly all) functions, or Atlantic City, which has more pipes -- most of which don't function? I suppose we could say St. Peter's is the "world's largest religious edifice." ;-)
St.John the Divine in NYC is the largest GOTHIC Cathedral in the world. The length is I believe 601 feet-that would be just over two football fields. I believe insurance funding supported the cleaning of the cathedral interior, windows and organ as well as it's refurbrishment. There is a space on the wall that was left unclean=unfinished(?). The gustavino tiles were sealed in the choir and the organ sounds like it never did in that space. Simply a transformed space of light, sound and soul.
Well, technically SJD is a Gothic Revival cathedral as it was built during the late 19th century - the Gothic era lasted from the 12th-16th centuries. It is a large cathedral but Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral in Merseyside, UK, is larger (at 619 feet long) so SJD is the 2nd largest cathedral in the world at, as you say, 601 feet long.
But don't forget that even though it is the largest it isn't the tallest. That crown belongs to Cologne Cathedral in Germany( if you know about cathedrals you should know about this) at 516 feet tall I believe.
The Cathedral Church of St John the Divine is considered to be the largest CATHEDRAL in the world. St Peters is larger but is not a cathedral per se. St John covers an area of 121,000 sq feet (16,822,000 cubic feet) the total length is 601 feet, and the height of the nave vault is 124 feet
@Kapitanleutnant777 St. Peters is a huge building -- probably larger in volume than any other religious edifice. But it is indeed classified as a basilica. I've always heard St. John the D referred to as the world's largest cathedral -- but then there's that building in Omasoukro (sp?), Ivory Coast that's the world's largest something-other. I don't think it qualifies as a cathedral because there's no cathedral chair there (or much of anything else, for that matter)
@steelersfanhawaii Well, I've heard 600 feet -- which would make it in that range. I use the city block comparison, but that's obviously somewhat nebulous ;-) Or, to use another reference point, the Washington Monument is 555 feet high, so you could lay it down in the nave -- if you were so inclined.
No one here seems to be picking up on the fact that Liverpool Cathedral is actually larger, both height and length. St John the Divine is 601ft long, and 232ft high. Whereas Liverpool Cathedral is 619ft long and 331ft high. I understand St Johns isn’t finished, and if it were it may be larger than Liverpool. However as it stands Liverpool is bigger. The point about both Liverpool and St Johns fighting the title for largest gothic cathedral is also not correct as they are both too new to be GOTHIC. Gothic revival however is a different story, although Liverpool is still larger.
@Belldavid1000 Actually, St. JD went the reverse: it started in Norman style (chancel/choir was built first), then the design was changed to Gothic style for the nave and transepts. I'm not sure why that decision was made, but the transepts and nave definitely were built AFTER the choir, chancel, and chapels.
@spidered1 Strongly disagree with that. It has chapels around the grand choir and the high altar in true Gothic architecture w/ crypt. Please be reminded that SJD was originally intended to be a landmark structure. In fact, one proposal, which came close to the current product, called for a cathedral with 600 ft. high ceilings, a 1200 foot steeple, a "great organ", and organs in the side chapels. They came close with a IV/141 Skinner as the "great organ" with two II/12 Skinners in side chapels.
Actually, St. Peter's is not a cathedral, but a Basilica Major (since it is the largest church in the world, shouldn't it be a Basilica Maximus?:-)). Additionally, 2 other cathedrals, Seville and Milan, claim more floor area, and have taller naves, than St. John the unfinished! :-) If we accept those figures (and there are some major books on Gothic churches that do), it would make St. John's the 4th largest church, 3rd largest cathedral, in the world. The National Cathedral would then be #7.
Not unless someone can come up with the tens of millions of dollars that would be needed to do so. The likelihood of that is minimal at best. They just spent tons of money rehabbing the place after the devastating fire of Dec 2001 -- and the place wasn't financially healthy ever before that.
St John the Divine is the largest Gothic Cathedral in the world. St Paul's is, of course, English early Baroque. St Peter's isn't a cathedral at all: the cathedral of the bishop of Rome is St John Lateran. That thing in Ivory Coast is--well, who the devil knows?
I disagree...it is not fully gothic..look at those pillars behind the altars, are they gothic?and talking about large,St John still can't beat Milan Cathedral, gothic too..
Can't be a Gothic cathedral because it is too modern - may be of the Gothic style. Largest in what way? Height? Floor area? Volume? People capacity? It isn't the largest in all of these, and is certainly not the most beautiful. Many of the modern sculptures are disturbing to say the least. Religious structures should not be about records or boasting that 'We have the biggest!" Enjoy it or worship in it, but God does not like boastful people!
If anyone can find the whole CD and share it you UA-cam, that would be a Christmas miracle!
Thanks for posting this video. I can't wait to see and sing in St. John the Divine, and this video stirs those desires strongly.

Thank you....splendid!!!

lol@SteelersfanHawaii. Btw. the organ is actually IV/141. Quimby did a phenomenal job restoring it.
BEAUTIFUL !!

I own an LP from 1974.
Wish someone would share the whole thing on UA-cam!

Excuse me, but as a member of this community, I know firsthand that we are broke as hell. Richest church I wish.

@a55b47 Apparently its the largest gothic cathedral.

Cathedrals are always built first with the chancel. Then the crossing columns, nave. butresses and finallt the transepts are completed.
is this church considered the richest church with even more money than the Vatican?
I understand that St John the Divine is not yet completed. Are there any plans to finish it?

@spidered1 It is properly described as Gothic Revival.
And the debate continues ;-)
I heard rumors the nave of St John the Divine is 1/10 of a mile long, anybody can validate that number?
The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine is 601 ft. long. It's been my church since 1981.
@@cgwolf3903would take a 5-iron or 6-iron to reach the alter from the entrance
St John the Divine is the largest Gothic Cathedral.
It's big, not the world's largest though. That goes to St. Peter's

@Mejeanpierre Sorry, this is all I have. I don't think her recorded very much.
St. Pauls is actually the second largest cathedral
Where is the rest of it???
It was on an album. I uploaded part of the album. You're welcome.

@a55b47 tee up a golf ball at the front entrance, you probably would need at least a 4-iron to reach the green (oops, the altar), lol
steelersfanhawaii that's priceless
