5:10 OMG Richard Dawson is such a low-key Savage! I love how he called out the Judges stupidity for not knowing a Whale is a Mammal and not a fish while roasting them! XD
Don't know why he is complaining since it was a match, the other times he thought they should have been a match and they didn't match them.. (shakes head..) I don't know the women still beak the Champ even if the judge hadn't match those two..
Whale was not a bad answer. RD was just embarrassed because it was definitely not a match for fish and he wanted to distance himsrlf from the poor decision of the judge.
The judges made a mistake matching whale with fish. A whale is not a fish. It's a mammal. Also, they're still vacillating on whether or not to match general with specific.
Gene and the judge let Suzie oust Jane by allowing her to change her ears lowered answered. Ironically Jim's answer that eliminated Suzie was ear also. Suzie made over $6,000 off her one lucky win, so she can't be too upset.
From one redhead to another, we stumble into the first week of Patti Deutsch. She was predominantly known as a voice actress, and used that nasally voice to great effect in films and television shows. She had an incredibly off-the-wall sense of humour which was reflected in her answers. While she didn't match as much as Fannie Flagg or Betty White, she still matched more than the likes of Dick Martin, Bill Daily or David Doyle. Patti clocked up 42 weeks on the CBS Match Game and one week in syndication. We'd see her husband, comedy writer Donald Ross, on the show the following year, and in 1978 we'd also see Max, her first son. Her passing in July last year at the age of 73 was mourned by the Match Game fandom. Only week of the other debut player, veteran character actor Jim Backus. He'd been the voice of Mr. Magoo (which led to a meeting between him and Marilyn Monroe), he'd been stranded on a desert island with Gilligan, he'd played James Dean's father in Rebel Without a Cause, he'd been in films with Humphrey Bogart, Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn and with all the comedy greats in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. He'd go on to travel back in time to the early 20th century to become mayor of New England coastal town Passamaquaddy when it was visited by an orphan and a funny-looking green dragon. Third week for Game Show Poet Laureate Nipsey Russell and sixth week for Betty White. Now for some technical observations (as pointed out below. Thanks Stupid Game Show Answers 2018 and Sam Mitchell for these!) - this is the first episode of Match Game to have the short end credits on the side of a rotating box. The contestants and panelists have also swapped microphones.
I love the show, but I have to disagree; Patti Deutsch, was a terrible player, worse that Brett. She only cared about coming up with her own funny answers and never showed a care about matching the contestants, you know, the purpose for the game.. giving cute answers had its time, but she never showed any care for helping the contestants.
Regarding Jim Backus, you didn't mention his three seasons of work as the co-star of the Joan Davis sitcom "I Married Joan," seen on NBC from 1952 to 1955.
I still like to know why Patti and Bob Barker, for that matter, were not around to do MGSynd. Bob wasn't on much during the 70's but Patti was and she only did one week of synd. I missed her after that and wish she could have been on more. I am guessing she didn't do MG/HS either..
Ridiculous isn't it? I've seen several episodes where the celebrities word was a match yet the judges say no. Yet this time they accept a mammal as a fish! I also wonder sometime on the super match is they are behind it loading the answers after the contestant chooses a word to determine who wins and how much.
Richard Dawson just has an uncanny knack with the big-money match! It seemed obvious that this contestant (Emmy) had decided before even coming onstage that she would choose Richard if she had the opportunity. Good choice!
Alright! ... Mr. Magoo!!! Look for Backus' comedy track from the late 50s - 'Delicious (The Laughing Song)' on YT; is great! "Every night we're going to do this!!! Hahahaha"
ROFL! Another fine episode! :0) ROFL! Love ya Gene! ;O) ROFL! Love ya Patti! ;0) ROFL! Love ya Betty! ;0) doctor.. Love the voices Gene.. ;0) cals.. ;0) See I thought he might be having problems with sleeping losing 3-4 hours of time every two weeks. But I have never travel across country so I don’t know what it would do.. ;0) Hang in there Gene.. ;0)
Nipsey, Richard and Betty are indeed that question's league of decency; it is a bit of a litmus test of one's sensibility: 'shot' or 'fed' - destroy or nurture. "Turpentine and dandelion wine I've turned the corner an' I'm doin' fine. Shootin' at the birds on the telephone line, Pickin' 'em off with this gun o' mine. Got a fire in my belly and a fire in my head. Going higher and higher till I'm dead."
As a game designer myself, it REALLY aggravates me that they never seem to figure out their own rules on whether a general guess by the contestant matches specific answers by the panel. So many guests were shafted in this way - especially in these early shows. Of COURSE Emmy got 6 in the first round when they were in "general matching specific mode" AND they considered a whale as a fish - SO dumb.
Patti's the new girl at school, so she smiles broadly. Later, she's the surly teenager who smokes behind the gym, so she uses that weird emotionless gaze.
Yea she does, but even SHE doesn't mismatch on purpose. To lose the game for a contestant would be unforgivable. They'd never have them back on the show!
Grabielle-Rick, round 1, question B: "He said, 'I dream I'm an ABLE-BODIED SEAMAN,' and the doctor said, 'You *are* dreaming.'" (Bzzt!) Question A: (looking suitably shocked) "Good night…" (then, with a grin) "MILKMAN's on his way." (Ding!) Round 2, question A: (who knows, but we'd presumably have to have one) Question B: (lay out) Super Match, part 1: (if asked before Richard) FOOL (if asked between Richard and Betty) SHOWERS (if asked after Betty) COME SHE WILL Part 2: GANG Rick-Williams, round 1, question B: "Since she's a music teacher, I figured she'd know 'Alouette', so I said PLUMAIT (PLUCKED)." (Bzzt!) Question A: "Him chase TAIL, and get your barbarian minds out of gutter." (Bzzt!)
I feel like they both were sort of alpha and Richard definitely wanted to have his own show. However, sometimes it feels like Richard has a little crush on Gene?
They worked well together. Richard knew when to lay out and when to jump in. Gene knew how to set up a straight line so Richard could take the joke. I thought they had great chemistry together.
Why does brett sommers have to be so mean and hatefull every show. Really back fired on her here it is 50 years later and everybody can see what a bitch she was.
I wish Betty White and Fannie Flag could have been regulars🤪😘💖 Love them
Yay, Jim Bakkus! (Thurston Howell, III, on Gilligan's Island and also Mr. Magoo)
I love Emmys outfit. I would wear it today.
5:10 OMG Richard Dawson is such a low-key Savage! I love how he called out the Judges stupidity for not knowing a Whale is a Mammal and not a fish while roasting them! XD

In later episodes they decide not to match the two if I remember correctly.
Luv Nipsy Russell's sense of humor, seemed to be ahead of his time!
Agree with you diverbob33 May he RIP
Nipsy was a comedy genius.
Dudes a hero
His out of nowhere short little poems he'd throw out during the episodes were great.
Nipsey was funny and smart! A dynamite combination!

I've never seen Chicken of the Sea Oyster Stew in the stores in my life.
She looked like Joanie from happy days in the other episode, here she reminds me more of Monica Lewinski. The hair against the smile

Richard and his polka dots again! Love his tie.
Yet on other episodes, beer isn't accepted as booze!

Well he is about 25 percent at this early time of the show this season so far..
Had. He's dead.
I'm suffering from CNR withdrawal!
Just 5 more weeks and he will be a regular on the show if you are still around.. ;0)

Patti was such a sweet girl..
