Dear God, this and Lila Wingo's performance in The Prince Of Tides played by Kate Nelligan is so frightening. Isn't it amazing how folks who come from Small Towns have the biggest personalities. Him, Halston, are prime examples. Another thing he had in common with Halston, and Liberace is that they had African American Women as Domestic Help.

So much amazing folks came from Minnesota, Charles Schulz (Peanuts), not to mention St. Olaf, Minnesota was where Rose Nylund was from on The Golden Girls, then in the 1980's the Minneapolis Sound was synonomous with Prince, The Time Jesse Johnson's Revue, Ta Mara & The Seen and one of her bandmates at the time Oliver Lieber is the son of the Late Jerry Leiber (RIP) and Mike Stoller who were the first successful songwriting team in Music.😊

What Lange can do in just 5 minutes...masterclass acting...the way she recites dialogue is like music. An absolute legend, and Tom Hollander is extraordinary as Capote. Truly brilliant.

How good is this scene? Very, very good. Jessica Lange as Capote's mother, playing the Angel of Death, not once but twice. With Roy Scheider as Bob Fosse in "All that Jazz" some 40 years ago. This scene alone is worth an Emmy.

@@wickedwitchoftheeast88 And here I was beginning to wonder if his being the inspiration for Dill in 'To Kill a Mockingbird' was something he made up. If he had been passed around from relative to relative then that sounds like Dill - all I know is that Truman and Harper Lee were childhood friends when he was in Alabama and when they both went to New York to become writers.

All I know for a fact is that for a few years he was left with his mothers relatives in Alabama right next door to the Lee's, and that his parents didn't come to visit for a few years. Plenty say he was bullied a lot because he was small and dressed "funny" and that Harper Lee was the one who defended him.

@@agenttheater5 oh no I didn't think you were being rude at all, I just meant that what I read might be bullshit lol it just said she was never around and he stayed with various relatives, one of whom was in Alabama where he met Harper Lee. But if is true it explains why he probably drank and did drugs your mum being absent and passing you to relatives like a parcel probably resulted in serious abandonment issues.

This scene was chilling. Her performance as a dissatisfied woman desperate to make a mark in society; never making one - confronting her son from the grave - trying to lure him over to “the other side”… absolutely chilling.
Jessica Lange goes deep. Deep into his soul….and watching him play off her; an absolutely masterful duo.

Yeah, people don't really talk about how good she is with affecting accents say like Meryl Streep. Jessica in AH does southern accent, a bronx accent and a swedish accent. She really is superb with dialects.

Last thing my mother told me was to lose weight. They are your worst enemy because of their own prejudices. She was 97 and had been paralysed for 5 yrs in a carehome.

Jessica has largely retired from acting now so I’m sure the only reason she agreed was it was Ryan Murphy and it was a smaller part. She probably wouldn’t have accepted a larger role.
She is supposed to be the black swan. She also represents the angel of death, which is a recreation of a part she did in her second acting stint All that Jazz with Bob Fosse. It’s a huge nod to so many things for J. Lange. She’s also helps give Capote’s story the why of it all.

Is that all Ryan Murphy can do with Jessica Lange? Have her as an antagonistic older woman? AHS, Feud S1, The Politician. I’m not suggesting some of these roles weren’t great but it’s mostly more the same. Jessica could do with working with the Grey Gardens team.
Jessica deserves an Academy Award, just for this little scene.

"You avenged me!" She wanted so much to be accepted by them, but never fully really was so when Truman told all their business out and humilated them, he was doing what Lillie Mae would have loved to have done. The Music reminds me of the music you hear on a Soap Opera when there's a heavy dramatic scene. I would have loved for someone like Alan Spaulding, Roger Thorpe, from Guiding Light to have had a conversation with their Late Mothers. I think not having them growing up affected them more than they realized.
