I stayed overnight alone in Scotlands nicest bothy

- Red house bothy (located in the Cairngorms National park) is Scotlands newest bothy. I planned to hike deep into the cairngorms to find this bothy and spend the night. Join me for an adventure
Every moment of this much appreciated video brings back memories to me of younger and healthier times in my life when I camped alone, no other humans within miles. The next morning after camping overnight, be it in a very comfy bothy in Scotland or a tiny tent in Minnesota, I feel the pull of wanting to stay, to not leave for the return to the parking lot, to civilization which, let's face it, in midJanuary 2025 is not a fine-honed civilization. The beauty along every step of your five miles in and out again is extraordinary, good Scottish Summiteer. The brusqueness of nature's wind and rain is harsh, indeed, and exhilarating. And exhausting. Thank you for videotaping your treks and sharing them with us. Well done!
I use a log stove fire all the time at my house so I can give you a handy tip for the fire......put the wood in first and the fire bloc on top when the wood is in full flo the bloc will disintegrate creating more heat so this is the time to pack out the fire and close the upper and lower dampers and the fire should simmer away all night...
The house you point at 3 minutes in was occupied by what may have been the last of the '45 Jacobite highland army of Charles Edward Stuart: Peter Grant, aka Auld Dubrach. Later, he had a British soldier billeted with him, which must have made for an interesting conversations. In 1822, he was introduced to King George IV. He died aged 110.
Who gives a crap that he met a king. I can't stand how people worship celebrities and royal families.
I wouldn’t mind seeing a ‘Worst Bothy’ video now that you’ve introduced us to the best 👍🏼
I think the worst ones are little stone shelters with no door and no amenities and a dirt floor
Greetings from Thailand. Decades ago when I about your age I was in the Cairngorms . THANK you for your video!
Was there jut before new year. Loads of snow and will remember standing outside with a full moon illuminating the entire landscape. Good to see the place in summer. A cracking bothy.
What a fantastic Bothy man. Thanks for sharing with us, cheers, John. 😀😃
Thanks John, really appreciate the support 🙏
Incredibly beautiful does not do justice. Thank you so much for sharing your video.
Och lad! Lovely video, you couldn’t be more Scottish if you tried. A diet of pot noodle, haribo and chocolate chip brioche. All ye needed was a Mars bar melted in the pot noodle as a main course and desert all in one. 😂
Class video. Really enjoyed it.
Is it weird that I'm Scottish and think, 'your accent is excellent, what an accent!!'
I love your adventures, man. You asked, so... I'd love to see you hit up more bothys. I'm from the US, and we just don't have anything like bothys out here. Thanks for sharing these trips with us, man!
Thanks for the support brother. Will try to do more bothy videos in the future 👍😊
Hi Gregor, superb mate, what a Bothy and what a stunning location. As bothies go, that is pretty luxurious, it’s better than all of the Travelodges! 🤣🤣 ⛰🥾🏕️🏴
😂😂 100% better than a travel lodge. Slightly better location aswell haha. All the best 😊
Beautiful views. I've been through Aviemore but not in this area. Try Sainsbury's Pasta Pots, amazing Mac and Cheese amongst other flavours. Posh loos, maybe needs an air vent. Lol. Sweet dreams and now homeward bound. Love the video. 🙏🙏👍💛👍🙏🙏 💯💯
Really enjoying your videos. Thanks for taking us along with you on your hikes and camps!
What a great bothy! I like that there's a toilet too.
Would like it more if the cess was emptied, thus eliminating the smell.
Great to see the young team up in the hills ,outstanding video keep them coming. I am gubbed aftet surgery its nice to see the Highlands. Thanks
Ŕeally enjoyable to watch, full of good humour and beautiful scenery. Like the way the Bothy is all natural pine wood and stone. Yes, would like to see more bothy, camping and wildlife videos. 😊
Thanks for the kind words Mike. All the best 😊
That was a really nice bothy. All the beautiful landscape getting there is absolutely stunning.
Another fantastic adventure that put a smile on my face! Cant wait for summer that seems to have averted us this year
Thanks man, me too mate. Surely were due some good weather soon🤞
Love it, as always. More bothies, more wild camping for sure! Please 😂
Awesomeness ❤
Thanks for the kind words, plenty more adventures to come👍
Really great channel. Good to see your enthusiasm and sense of humour.
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it
Hello Gregor, I have just recently discovered your videos and I'm really enjoying them. I paticularly like the fact that you give the viewer a real opportunity to soak up the views with little commentary and just let the camera do all the work. Keep up the good work and I look forward to your future adventures.
Thanks mate. Glad you enjoy the adventures 😊
Great video. Thank you for taking us along on your adventures 😊
Was in there a few weeks ago when I did the two Munro’s at the back of it. Absolutely beautiful and one to visit. You were lucky to have it on your own
Another top quality presentation, cheers .
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it🙏
Such a relaxing beautiful video. Many thanks Claire xoxo
Enjoy your videos so much, relaxing and the views are fantastic!! The Bothy videos are awesome, you cover them well. Amazing hikes, been many years since I visited Scotland. Subbed so don't want to miss any videos. Thanks for all you do and look forward to more great views!!😀
Keep climbing those peaks and conquering those trails, one pot noodle at a time!
Stay wild and keep hiking!
Even in the rain it’s still stunningly beautiful. Sure is a great place to explore. Cheers for bring us a long
Hi. Nice video. Brings back memories from May 2023 when I had the privilege of staying there when I snagged the last bunk available - it was during the TGO Challenge and the place was heaving.
Yes, full credit and kudos to the MBA on a fantastic renovation. Prior to their restoration I believe it was a ruin, uninhabitable even as an emergency shelter?
You should start a poll with the title of Best Bothy For Bang For Your Buck, in terms of effort to get there with reward of destination!
It's a contender for sure.
Abyssinia? 90minutes to 2 hours easy walk in and fairly flat.
Ryovan? 60minute easy walk in.
Cast your votes!!
Regards, Wadi
Thanks wadi. It’s a great bothy isn’t it. That’s a really good idea, need to visit a few more to make the decision myself👍
Nice Vid mate, pretty relaxing time to yourself, thanks for the views.
When i hear "bothy" i think of Billy Conolly saying "what a lovely bunch of bothies" 😂😂
Bit windy and rainy but,as you said, it is Scotland. Spectacular view . thanks a lot for sharing.
Thx for the video, it was really lovely to see Scotland again and a really nice Bothy 😊
Glad you enjoyed it😊
Enjoyed this video looking forward to more
Nice! It's one of my bucketlist things to hike in the Cairngorms and stay in a bothy :)
Hmmmmmmm, i think i would have laid my bed out on the floor in front of the fire, and closed the doors to the rest of the rooms, seeing you had the place to yourself
That was an awesome looking Bothy
Ah, but remember the mice.....
Cheers Gregor, certainly is a lovely place and was fortunate to visit it earlier this year too.
ATB 👍
Thanks Dave. The support is much appreciated😊🙏
I‘ll subscribe!
Respect for your effort!
Once been to Scotland,Glen Coe!
Can‘t wait to see more!👍🏼
Still struggling with the side by side toilet seats🤔… Interesting conversation to be had when a fellow traveler nests down beside you to drop off a deuce.😬😂😂
Amazing video mate!! Yet another peaceful and beautiful adventure 🫡 I remember you checking out this bothy on your previous long journey, still seems as new and clean.
Yeh still in great condition. Thanks for the support brother 😊
Great video mate 👏🏻⛺️
Lovely. Greetings from Canada.
Chicken and mushroom pot noodle on the go. The best kind.
Also, featuring haribo again. You should be advertising for both my son 😂
😂😂 I wish
While hiking in the Cairngorms in August of 2018, we camped at the Red House for two nights. We set up the tents outside, but the ruined shell of the house gave us welcome shelter from the weather while we made meals and hung clothes to dry. I'm glad to see that the Mountain Bothies Association has been able to rehabilitate the building at last.
Well done lad...
100% respect 4 ya...
Keep up da guid work...!!!!🙏❤️🙏😎💯🏴
That entire area is slowly coming back to life as the trees re-establish themselves. It’s nice now, but in the future this will be a three dimensional bio-diverse wonderland.
That rainbow was awesome .Great both too
Agree with how terrible this summer has been 😂 dreadful.. must be due a heatwave in August..
I have never stayed in a bothy but if I was ever to stay in one then this would be the one, great video 😁
Thanks mate. Here’s hoping the weather improves 😂😂. Good luck with the rest of your munros, hopefully you get some better weather for the run in😊
nice one mate, looked like a cracking hike and bothy camp. if you are ever back up in skye then pop into the brewery in uig to say hello!
Thanks mate. The bothy is great isn’t it. All the best 😊
Luxury.
Great stuff.
Never been over that way. Only West Highlands.
Thkx m8.
No worries mate. Glad you enjoyed it😊
Another great one, thanks Gregor. I simply couldn't imagine sitting with two strangers, elbow to elbow, to open my bowels, what a nightmare!
😂😂 would definitely be an interesting experience. Thanks for the support 😊
Yeah I think I'd either wait or head off into some heather with my trowel instead 😬
There are three to ensure there is capacity if bags fill before being collected and removed... Yer no meant to use at the same time. If you see two lids are secured shut so only 1 in use at a time 😅😂
@@toottheterrible yep, it dawned on me that that was the reason for the multiple seats when I was sat reading the sign on the wall at Corrour Bothy whilst using the facilities 🤣
@@toottheterribleIt's too late to tell us that now, I've already cancelled my holiday to Scotland and sought out some counselling! 😮
Besides the weather, a nice relaxing adventure.
that bothy looks brilliant thank you for the upload
Wonderful video. Ive been through Aviemore but never this area. Beautiful views. Try Sainsbury's Pasta Pots. Mac and Cheese, other flavours too. You should try tyhem. Super bothy. Nice toilets but maybe could do with air vents. Lol. Sweet dreams and now homeward bound. 🙏👍👍💛👍👍🙏💯💯
Beautiful views!
My husband used to camp there in the 1960s.
Nice video but unless I missed it no acknowledgment of the work put into this place by the unpaid volunteers of the Mountain Bothies Association
Whilst MBA bothies are free to stay in, no Bothy is actually ‘free’. They cost time, effort and funds to renovate and keep wind and water tight.
The Red House featured here was a dangerous ruin that was saved by the MBA and is owned by National Trust for Scotland
The upkeep of the toilet is onerous and as described in the video unpleasant. Imagine being the volunteers that have to deal with it.
You can join the MBA air donate through the website and assist in the upkeep of these tremendous places
At 9.03 the plaque for MBA is featured. Wonderful Association.
nice one pal looks a cracking bothy, keep[ up the good work. Atb Wullie
The scenery looks fabulous, I'm assuming there could be other people there! As for sharing a triple toilet... No thanks 😅😮
Yeh I just got lucky this time in getting the place to myself. I know, the toilet was an interesting one😂
Scotland have very nice landscape but weather give me chill.
There is a place in India call Cherapunj. Cherapunj have lots of rain. In Britain colonial time it's used to call Scotland of India.
Gotta admit your country is beautiful
That’s a cracking bothy! We stayed in one not long ago and it had a full on kitchen, beds and everything. Got a video on my channel of it, was super cool. Hoping to do another bothy trip soon! Although we are a family of 6 and not sure I would do it as a solo female! Thanks for a great video, love watching others exploring the Scottish Wilderness as well!
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed it😊
What another fantastic video mate such a wonderful channel just subscribed to your channel love from Dublin
Cheers brother. All the best😊
Great video, you certainly got 'lucky' in having the place to yourself.
Thanks mate. I certainly did, I think it’s a quite a busy bothy normally
@@ScottishSummiteer
Yes, it will be due to the walk-in.
I should be up that way later this year and I'll plan a route to cycle past it.
Cheers.
It might be Scotland but no denying that there's been a vast increase in rainfall over the last 12 months.Usually you get stable periods of high pressure but since July 2023 began we've hardly had one rain free day and pretty much constant Atlantic low pressure systems for over 12 months now .To be honest I've never known anything like it.
Great video. If its ok can i ask a question about your sleeping bag please
Yeh go for it mate
@@ScottishSummiteer which sleeping bag is it please
They should have put up gutters to keep the rainwater from the foundation s
That's a great place to be
Nice wee vid lad. And no click bait headlines this time 👍
Quick anti-mouse remedy: either tea-tree oil or eucalyptus oil. Sprinkle some of either of these in their direction. They really hate these!
Thanks, will have a look at that for the future. All the best😊
Hi Marie, these could be poisonous to dogs. You’re best just leave the mice be. It’s part and parcel of bothying that you’ll get mice occasionally. People just need to leave the place tidy with no perishable food left behind.
Also moth balls
Those will both make your cats and dogs sick, so don't use them if you have pets.
@@ScottishSummiteer for mice prevention try peppermint oil the more potent it is the more they hate it!
Lol, I live in Washington state, our weather is a lot like yours 😄
love to see some more bothy trips, four hikers going to the toilet block in that bothy, three of them all together in the see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil poses and the fourth lucky one just outside, smell no evil
😂😂
Brilliant 👏
May I suggest you get some British Army ready meals.
Loved the bothy. Where is it?
A good man
Rhosw bunkbeds have a kind of upscale concentration camp vibe to them.
Syd Scroggie mentioned on that wall at 8:21. Legend.
That wasn’t a mouse btw, it was the red house ghost… place is built on the site of an old Indian graveyard
Indian graveyard in Scotland. Seriously!
Thank you
Why were the toilet lids strapped closed?
5 miles a short walk ?how long are your legs !!!🏴❤️
Bothy was a complete shell for years before the MBA converted it to the fab place you see now. Was not a bothy before that, just a ruin.
Who supplies the firewood?
Yeh that is pretty neat, ive seen and stayed in worse over 50 years in Mountaineering....
Should've left the door to the toilets open for a bit, might help with the smell.
It seems lonely and abit scary on your own, but I want to try this being from Scotland. Any beginner areas central Scotland a bothy stay in explore recommend?
❤
Aye, a top bothy, remind,s me of GDL. Dislike the enclosed fire place, nothing like an open fire, but understand the safety concern,s.
Yeh I’m the same, open fire is better but can’t complain eh. When the bothy is that nice 😊
There is a bothy in Wales which charges 35-45 pounds per night. Do the scottish ones charge?
Really? I thought they were all free to use? Who takes the money?
MBA bothies are free throughout the UK, ones that cost to stay in are private.
@@tonypaddler thanks 🙏
@@gezzy8095 idk maybe the land owner, I looked at it online today, will try and find it for you 💛
It is in Beddgelert, Gwynedd and the national trust advertise it
What's it like up there at the end of October?
Five miles is about an hours walk! Bothies were for real travellers.
Can you sleep in a Bothy for more than 1 night
subbed you :)
I'm curious about where Gregor is from. I can't quite place his accent. Do any of you guys know please?
Thoroughly enjoying Gregor's videos. 😊
Cracking channel. Subbed! 🙂
Anyone else think the 3 cludgies were a bit strange? There must be a reason....... apart from the obvious 😎
There is. It is to allow the bag of poo to dry out. This differing chutes are in use at differing time
Littles bears haribo .........
I broke down gone midnight ob the A9 heading to Inverness and let me tell you I absolutely shit my self waited for friend to come to me with petrol it was horrible experience thought I would die
John 14:6 ESV - Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
❤
Pretty boring video really. You did nothing at all.
