- Dutch stereotypes and clichés, I've heard quite a bit about them since moving to the Netherlands. But often I feel that they can be a bit exaggerated, so I decided to go out and speak with Dutch people to see what stereotypes they find to be exaggerated!

I would say...
rains. Constant rains. I originate from Kyiv, and over there we have like 2-4 times more rains per year. What differs in NL tho, is that nobody melts from rain here, and people dont usually change their plans because its raining
An exagerated stereotype I heard a few times is that we don't like to stand in line. We might hate it, but we do it quite often and are pretty good at it. What we hate even more is people skipping the line. That's a fast ticket to angry Dutchies.
Honestly who even likes to stand in line in the first place,sure people can be patient but I don't think anyone likes it😭😭(this wasn't meant to be rude or anything just weird that someone ac said that,so this isn't exactlyyy directed towards you)
I think a lot comes from stories in expat bubbles of people who don't speak Dutch but still share eachother's observations like they really know. They don't really have Dutch friends but confuse Dutch acquintences with those, and if you're not a friend you're not expected to visit without an invitation.
Windmills and clogs are such old stereotypes that people got sick of it, but clogs are actually quite practical as safety shoes and I have worked in factory where some wore clogs instead of steel caps. Windmills were actually of huge importance in Dutch and European history and it was pretty high tech (proto) industrialization for it's day. And the ladies carry flowers with one in the background.
People smoke far less weed than in most European countries and the USA. They do, also in small villages, it's just not a big deal and most are wise enough to not smoke on a daily basis and make it a lifestyle or smoke at any opportunity.
Hey Lynott! I agree, I feel it's often easy for expats to just repeat with each other the same cliches that are often shared instead of doing a true analysis of their experiences in the country and seeing what are the real habits/characteristics that they've seen from Dutch people. I'm guilty of this myself, so that comment isn't meant to call out all other expats haha.
@@exploringtheforeign But you speak Dutch and have real friendships/relationships with Dutch people. You get the intonation, you understand quite a bit of the primary expression of culture, and you don't have second hand knowledge. You know this kid's game in which everybody whispers a story to the person next to him, and by the end of the circle it's a very different story? That seems to me similar of what's going on in expat communities, they don't realize how closed of the culture they are by not speaking the language and relying on knowledge by people who don't have real access either.
I don't mind stereotypes. They make the world more comprohensible, and there's usually some truth in it so if people don't take them for rigid facts it's fine. But because there are so many expats who don't speak the language here, it's a bit off.
What I find super irritating is the stereotype of the Dutch smoking weed/coffee shops and that it's everywhere, and the standard reference to the Red Light District.
As far as weed is concerned, I've never smoked it in all the 32 years I've lived here and have no idea even where to buy it in the quite large town that I live in. I have yet to come across a coffee shop here.
The Red Light District is a particular, rather small area in Amsterdam. As a tourist you would probably never even stumble upon it by accident. You have to actually go there. It's not everywhere and definitely caters to the tourist market. For the Dutch, should and when they have the need, there are other ways of going about it.
So, this weed and red light district thing is really a pet hate of mine.
Indeed exaggerated. People who talk sh*t about the Dutch don’t really know them. Dutch people are friendly and loyal once you prove yourself to be nice and honest. That’s what you are, Sam. A great role model. Thank God for great people like you. ❤❤❤

I think that's true, I feel that everyone needs to prove that they are worthy of a Dutchie's time or attention which can be taken as efficient but, for me, is a bit heartless. And before anyone asks, I do speak fluent Dutch and I'm immersed in Dutch culture.
I missed one what doesn’t apply for me, planning!
I’m diagnosed with ADD, planning should be good for me but I hate it, I love a empty agenda, and I can walk in just about everywhere without scheduling months a head.
… And one. I was impressed by the one guys English what really sounded natural.
Not everyone speaks fluent English, I use these reactions to improve or dust off my writing skills. For work I would have contact with New York and Sweden ones a week, I would rather write them than talking with them (not only because New York started around 12 am with their calls so that only was on a Friday so I combined it with the Friday drink after work with co workers however that’s also not my thing).
Even our prime minister talks in Pidgin-Englisch (something I also needed to look up otherwise it would be coal English) however some people say he’s able to speak in perfect English but he dumbs it down to connect to the people.
Our football coaches are also known for their Pidgin-Englisch.
Haha yeah, planning is also not for me. And I'm assuming you were referring to the second guy's English? If so, yeah, his English was really good! No accent haha.
I really like your video's! It's very recognizable as a Dutch person and I think you're very approachable as an interviewer! People are comfortable to speak open about their experiences! Keep it going🙌🏽

Interesting topic, I must say I was never really aware of these stereotypes until well into adulthood. My mother had a pair of klompen that she kept by the back door and slipped on to hang the washing out in the back garden. I remember once during snowy weather she slipped them on to go down to the shops in our neighbourhood of London. I was so embarrassed to say the least. I was an impressionable kid. 🤣

I went on vacation with a friended trucker, he was wearing clogs in his work driving. And strangely enough in vacations in Belgium he would bring them but destinations we traveled by plain he wouldn’t bring them.
In the past I’ve driven also longer distances and often would also remove my shoes, clogs are more airy and you don’t lose them as easy as “Swedish slippers” (my preferred shoes for at home).

Actually, most stereotypes are also a reason, why as a small country, we have quite some influence in the Western world. When working in companies with foreigners they say as well that too many stereotypes are explained as negative instead of seeing the positives of it.
And when it comes to hospitality, I believe that there aren't many countries that switch to the language of the foreigner or English to not make them feel excluded. And meanwhile are that appreciative when an ex-pat learns Dutch as we see this as an appreciation of our culture.

I think the Dutch and Latin-hispanics has the most dishes in the world and also our American Kitchen is quite Dutch we still make food from our ancestors such as Pancakes! Delicious.
Having lived here for almost 7 years, I actually like Dutch people being direct (or you can say open and honest) about their opinion. It makes communication super efficient.
Nice video Sam, in the town I grew up in ! It probably is hard to imagine but in the end we all are just people, nothing more, nothing less. We grew up here and other people grew up anywhere on this globe. Now the fact that cultures are different does not mean that they are not to overcome. There are conditions for success though: Treat the new culture of the new country as the new norm to yourself, like Sam does, and you'll see everything will go a lot smoother than when you desperately want to stick to your own foreign country culture in the new country and despise the new country and it's culture basically you're not giving yourself a chance in any country but your home country. Which means you should not leave your home country in the first place and by all means stay there! Going to live in another country than you own country with this attitude, you are not doing anyone a favor with! Not yourself and especially not the people of the new country you choose to live in with your own home country norms and values and culture! Basically you are doing everyone a favor if you stay at home, because this will never be home to you!
Hey, Dutchy J! I appreciate the comment, although I want to be careful and not use myself as the poster boy for immigration haha. But I hope my experiences help others.
I recognize that immigrating to a new country isn't always easy. And I do believe you should be open to the new culture you move to and learn the norms, but it's also important to not forget where you come from. A lot of beautiful things come out of the mixing of cultures. There are certain things I do or say or believe that make me very American, but that's also just what makes me me. :)
@@exploringtheforeign Hey Sam, yes of course you should not forget where you are from, but giving yourself a chance on success really means that the country/culture you are from should be of a secondary interest to you when you live in a new country/culture (The Netherlands), since this is the country/culture you are actually living in and you want to be success full in. You may claim that you are originally from that other country, but in the new country (The Netherlands) nobody cares about that since we all live in this (to you new) country and so this country/culture (The Netherlands) is dominant and so that other country (wherever you are from) is to the vast majority of locals here in The Netherlands / Europe of no importance, except maybe to that one individual whom originally is from that other country. Remember that you are is this emigrant/immigrant situation, but that's just you, the most of us are born and raised here so this whole emigrant/immigrant thing is completely outside our world of experience and therefore plays no role in our lives. And since we are occupied in our lives in The Netherlands with all the things we've gotta do: (Work, Housing, Family you name it), the last thing we need is a random foreigner to tell us that we need to adapt to this newcomer in language or culture wise spoken to make this newcomer feel more at home, because the newcomer wishes to integrate his own culture in The Netherlands, because that's what he is used to...-->?
So this newcomer wants to change all off the Dutch into his culture because that suits him better.... Yeah I don't think so.
So you are who you are, and you are from originally where you are from originally but now you are in The Netherlands and so you take place in the Dutch culture and in the Dutch language.
I would advise to some Dutch pensionados in Spanje to follow your advice 😅

what I can say tho is that when it comes to the netherlands and its stereotypes, its really a "CHOOOSE YOUR CHARACTERRR" kinda thing but I guess that is because despite being small, netherlands is quite multicultural
like, some ppl from bonaire, some people that are turkish arabian, some chinese,some indien, and of course, Dutch! (also depends where in the netherlands ofc, but still)
so I guess you could say dutch just comes with multiple cultures, and that might be why there are differing stereotypes
And remember, The netherlands is important for many different things, and might aswell be one of the very important if not most important for specific things.
Which despite not always being recognized, is something we dutch can be proud of

It's my believe that people are people and they are the same all over the world. There's no real difference between a dutchman, an American, an African or any other nationality. Although they may behave a bit differently due to traditions and/or religion. They will (allmost) all keep you at a distance if they don´t know you, but once you get a conversation started, they will open up and answer your questions. Some are direct, some are not. Some are too serious, some are the exact oposite. Some are tight on their money, some spend it faster than it comes in. And once you've become a friend, it may well be for life, unless you're not interested in that friendship or when seriously fuck it up,.
Yeah the diversity is there, but it's more isometrically distributed than people realize. Personality types matter more than culture or religion. It's just that certain personality types have it easier integrating into 1 culture as opposed to another.
Another common theme is how directness and culture are related to economics. People are generally more direct in traditional trading centres than in political centres. Because being direct is incentivized if you are a trader or bargaining customer, but disincentivized if dealing with the snakes in political hierarchies.
Different cultures, different people.
Genetically spoken we all belong to the same species.
A person is formed by both genetics and culture.
Different culture, different habits.
Directness is not necessary rude.. sometimes it can be to help the other one..
I always say: be kind to unkind people they need it the most..
With my Indonesian roots I sometimes need to adjust cause asian people can be too modest 😉

Hi interesting video sure the Dutch are the same as everybody else theres bad and good different tastes in food and people but a lot depends on you and yes careful with money but will spend out on friends i personally like direct we in the UK cover it in sweetness never sure if meant or not. You're kind of missing the point. He's referring to people who are actually rude and then use the Dutch culture as an excuse. I think such people should be called jerks. People who misbehave are no longer entitled to be referred to with respect.

Dutchies are direct. There is no doubt about it. But direct vs rude are two things. Foreigners tend to think it is rude, where no offense is intended. Directness serves several purposes, mainly it saves time. Yuo know what we mean, because we told you what we mean. Body language, and indirect messaging leaves lots up to interpretation and can be misread. Directness can not be misread, so less misconceptions. If all that makes things seem rude, than think about all situations you were in, where indirect conversation has lead to a worse outcome as the directness of the Dutch. Ask yourself, which of those was worse ???

They are pretty much all right. Every fucking bill needs to be split and exactly the amount of the food/drink they used. Dutch food is nutritious but it is boring, it's pragmatic food, easy to make in larger quantities so you don't have to cook for 2 days.
And yes we are direct, if you ask us a question we won't tell you what you want to hear we will answer your question truthfully if you can't handle that don't ask the question.

Dutch are direct, but not rude. That's a huge difference. I've never sent a tikkie in my life, maybe it's a thing of the younger generation? I will look after my money, how I spent it. But I'm happy to give things away if someone needs it more than I do. I don't plan meetings with friends or family. I don't even own a planner, because I don't write anything in it anyway. My door is always open, don't have to call first. Only if you want to make sure I'm home. People can always stay for dinner, also unannounced. Hmmm maybe I'm not dutch after all 😂. Although I was born and raised there.
Wiet en klompen inderdaad. Ja je kunt wiet kopen, maar niet iedereen loopt hier 24/7 stoned rond. Er zijn volgens mij meer mensen die het niet gebruiken dan wel. En klompen zie ik ook echt maar weinig. Meestal op een boerderij inderdaad.
Well, we may send a tikkie so every now and then but when something goes really wrong like famine in Africa or a terrible earthquake in some third world country, we immediately make a generous out-off-pocket donation without any second thought.

Honestly hahah as far as i know Dutch people actually do love Dutch cheese a lot hahaha idk anyone that doesn’t like Dutch cheese and most people looove it. And also alooot of people i know smokes or smoked weed or finds it normal and i don’t live in Amsterdam but in a small town.

Ik denk dat het directe ook wel scheelt per provincie, in het westen is dat wat sterker dan in de rest van het land. Een ander stereotype waar ik wel benieuwd naar jouw ervaring ben is dat het moeilijk is om vrienden te worden met Nederlanders, ze zullen je niet snel bij hen thuis uitnodigen.
Ik zou zegen ik heb geen probleem gehad met Nederlanders qua vrienden worden en alles. Ik ben vaak uitgondigd naar naar huizen van Nederlandse mensen :)

Another one that is exaggerated is that we are all very tall. We have some very tall people, but not everyone is tall.

the ones that are not that tall are tall to us foreigners.
The only thing negative about dutch is we lack a kind of passion. That is shown in our lovelife and politics. Dont mistake that for us not cafing but we are more based. So we expect our counterpart to be just like that. And when the difference goes beond what we see as accaptable we might come over as psycho killers. But thats only way beond u cross all the limits.

Directness is very much Dutch. The problem with most people interviewed is that they are more “world citizen” type of people than true Dutchmen. In the countryside, especially near the borders, the culture is way more traditional than the cities - where in my opinion people can barely be identified as Dutch.
In the end we've all got opinions, but the girl that said All Dutch people smoke weed is just not true, I know a lot of people that don't smoke weed or even smoke in general including myself.
The Netherlands boring? I never heard this😂😂

It is not exaggerated but we are misunderstood, we are not direct but sincere and honest and actually value our integrity.
We understand that we can grow from good or bad opinions, nothing good comes from lies or half truths.
We are not scarce, we are efficient and honest. In a restaurant the bill is what it is and instead of paying large tips we pay honest salaries.
With sharing the bill we believe everyone needs to do their part.
Regarding hospitality we are one of the most "true" friendly people in the world, a lot of us are in a good mood, not on edge, not just friendly because of culture or insecurities. (e.g. Japanese can be regarded more friendly but this is because of culture and might think different from the inside).
Regarding the food, we have some good stuff but yeah, we need to do better, but that's why we integrate other cultures :).
Only stress, the deadly variant that is..
About the weed: a lot of it is sold to foreigners, especially in Amstrdam and the border towns.

Laughing so hard at the girl, who says we all use weed. No honey, perhaps all in your social circle. But the expert in the Netherlands, the Trimbos Institute, states that 23.6 % of the Dutch ever used it. And among those are people, who used it only once, to try it out because they were curious. And many of those, who shortly used it during the wild years, when in school, but never again as adults. But yeah, there are those, and too many still, who use it every weekend or even every day. The latter of course emotionally totally dependent. Exception confirms the rule.
