Frames: Being Black In The Netherlands

  • Although the Netherlands may appear tolerant and open, traditions like Zwarte Piet suggest that racial discrimination and stereotyping are still prevalent issues. The lack of self-awareness of the Netherlands and the Dutch regarding their covert racism and colonial past act as a mask to the injustices faced by their Black citizens. This video is an attempt at exposing some of these biases by creating a platform for individuals of colour to speak openly and freely and share their experiences. Michael Brookman-Aikins, Naomi Dimeo, Ayisha Heuerding and Noah Sandel discuss the subjects of housing discrimination, social media activism and lack of diversity in universities.
During the editing of this video, murals at the Black Archives in Amsterdam were defaced. Images of Black activists were painted over to look white. Racism is alive and well in Amsterdam.

They have “tolerance” in the uk as well. It’s also not great with its understanding of its own colonial history, even though it understands it arguably had the most notorious empire ever. But this stuff is available freely so ppl can and do learn it, it’s just not taught well in schools, and many ppl get defensive when it’s brought up. It’s been weaponised by politicians so it’s made things worse. This was a good video, thank you for doing this

Unfortunately racism and especially against black people is still today prevalent. The tax office ethnic profiling, Geert Wilders come to mind. The Dutch were and still a nation of traders. They took advantage of the West India Company and traded with Africans for many years. When slavery was abolished in 1865, all slavers were compensated for their loss, but not the slaves. I think from this period that the Dutch never could accept the end of slavery. That (Some) still have a score to settle. I live amongst descendants of slaves in a rural area in the Caribbean.

I want to make one point very clear: Racism IS always discrimination, but vice versa discrimination is NOT always racism. It's both bad and sad for sure. But to adress these issues by trying to ban it from society, you DO have to point out what kind of discrimination you're dealing with. Skin colour differences, cultural differences, religio differences etc. etc. all need a (whole) different kind of approach to resolve.

"Dutchies have racism in their blood since they are born" is THE MOST DISCRIMINATING LINE towards Dutch people that i've ever heard. You should be ashamed by yourself, and look in the mirror before you accuse others of discrimination.. And for de record: white people discriminating other white people is discrimination, but can never be racism. And last but not least: When you mention the word "Dutchies", i can tell by your comment that by that word you mean only white Dutch people, while in reality Dutch people are of all colours. That also means that you are a racist yourself.

I agree with Isabel Pullman. Speaking the language shouldn't be a factor in being accepted for the race that you are. I think that integration and racism can't be linked when it comes to this. She could be speaking Dutch and still be disciminated. Sure, it would help them to integrate, but it won't solve the racism issues they face.

Ever heard of the United States of America? Over there racism is a systemic phenomenon which means that (especially in the South) cops and civil servants are racist with the blessing of the population. As a colored person you have to fear for you life during a traffic stop. Those cops do notice your skin color and act accordingly in a violent way.
Colored people nagging about Dutch racism and prejudice act like a bunch of spoiled children without realizing how the world outside the Netherlands looks like in terms of racism and superficial prejudice. You guys act like spoiled children. And no, I'm not a racist. I've always played in multicultural bands and ignoring someone's skin color doesn't automatically mean ignoring or rejecting his or her (native) culture.
I feel blessed to have been born and live in the Netherlands and you should too.
Go take a three month vacation in the Southern United States and experience the real world. Experience what bigotry and racism really means for those people who were so unfortunate to have been born in America and come back home after that and we'll talk further.

''So many white people see white as the norm''
Because it is and has always been like that, when you think of the Netherlands, you think about Dutch things normal to Dutch society.
Norm or normal, is that which is most prevalent or are most of.
People asking you where you from when you're black and not speaking the language, i find quite normal, i don't understand why that's bothering you.
Or assuming you're from Africa, which is after all the place the whole black race came from.
Growing up in a part of a city between many nationalities, but in a western nation, may feel comfortable.
When attending a mainly white school may not, but sorry to say this, that's on you.
Question : When came black pete into your life and when did it became a problem ?
You were probably aware of black pete from a very young age and all was fine.
It became a problem because a or a few adults made it a problem, nobody, white or black, adult or child ever thought it was anything other than what it always has been, a childrens festivity and happy time.
Outside of Amsterdam that much different being black ?
Where ? A very small village in Friesland ? Yeah, i guess so, but isn't that to be expected ?
The example of the woman describing the meeting, i'll find very hard to believe or she's not telling the whole story.
The search in AH ? I'm a 57 year old white man with the looks of a Hell's Angel, even in the AH which i mainly use for groceries, i'll have that experience far more often than the people next to me, even after 6 years and all knowing i'm a friendly guy who never stole anything.
Point making : When you stand out in the crowd, expect to be treated that way.
Last remark, any idea how many people through the years have or have tried to pull my goatie ?
    Pfffff a gazillion.
Asked to leave or never getting in in the first place at clubs or other venues ? Holy shit, that much.
But thinking about it afterwards, even though their reasoning was wrong, i still understand it, because we actually do this ourselves also.
I avoid many places where i can expect it to happen, mainly because i don't want to be there anyway, i mean, i don't like golf, so why go there.
But even if i did, what should i expect ? Maybe not getting thrown out, but certainly not appreciated being there.
I'm halfway the vid and stopped.
Having a pretty good understanding of the overall narrative, i would like to say some things.
Everywhere on this planet, with every kind of people (even amongst same race, place of birth and residency) people atrack or flock to 'their' kind.
Hey, skateboarders find each other and like that, so do painters, but also whites, colored, brown, yellow or black people.
Makes you feel amongst peers, same way of thinking or interest and whatever more.
You all in the video do exactly the same, all black, no Asian or white person around.
Probably having none or very few white friends.
Living amongst many black people and attending black parties and events, and listening to black music, and whatever more you like.
I won't deny racism exists and assholes also roam the Netherlands, just like any other place.
Racism prevellent over here ? Hell no.
(off track, but wanting to really experience it ? Try Asia, especially China)
Can you be who you whish to be here ?
    Absolutely !
Is it possible to become anyone you could aspire to be here ?
Again, absolutely, probably not easy, but that goes for anyone who raises the bar high.
Overall : Stop wining so much, and contemplate a bit more on what you're doing right now, which is actually making things worse.
Especially end this horrific and relentless referal to colonial times and slavery.
You weren't there and so were we.
You (and when being born here, also your parents) have never experienced apartheid, like for example in the US or S. Afrika in the past.
Not to mention that every race and even nations has have had the same experience at some time in history.
And last but not least : You're always free to leave.

But i have a solution, and knowing that information/knowledge is the biggest force to understand what's going on and necessary to address any problem as truthful possible, i would like you for starters to watch this for example (and hopefully pass it on)
