1000 ohms because at test conditions Vce=5v supply, If(forward current)=5mA; to produce this test conditions Rl= 5v/.005A=1,000ohms current limiter resistor to produce a 5mA from 5 volt dc supply.
values of the test conditions are based from Q817A optocoupler datasheet.

Other simple way : just open internal LED with your multimeter with function LED and check continuity with another multimeter. Be carefull to use LED function (if you have) and not diode function otherwise it won't work (in my case btw maybe for other multimeters it will work)
