I recently got splatoon 2, and I have been trying to find the origins for awhile now! I look on my notifications and i see you guys uploaded! You completed my quest of trying to find the origins.
1:42 I could've sworn I heard somewhere that the inspiration for Yoshi's Island's artstyle was because Miyamoto was jealous of Rare's Donkey Kong Country. Despite Splatoon being a cool and original idea at the time I just wasn't interested in it. It wasn't until Splatoon 2 where I decided to give it a try and I liked it. My brother could not stop playing it when we got it for Christmas. One thing I really love about Splatoon is it's music. it's amazing.
Another top video, although it's a bit of an exaggeration to say this was "the first time in years [Nintendo had] a new brand new game idea with all new fresh and original characters". Shortly before this game came out Nintendo released The Wonderful 101, Codename S.T.E.A.M and Xenoblade, to name but a few. Splatoon was certainly the only one to be a mega-hit, however. :)
John Walsh No, Codename S.T.E.A.M was codeveloped with Intelligent Systems (a second party) and Xenoblade was developed by a Nintendo subsidiary, Monolith Soft. That's why Nintendo owns the IPs.
While I enjoy the video, Nintendo didn't "use the same characters and mechanics over and over again". That's a stubbornly persistent narrative. In 2001, they debuted Advance Wars. And Pikmin. In 2003, Warioware. In 2005, Nintendogs. Xenoblade in 2010. All the while, they REGULARLY reinvented classic characters and series, and didn't fall back on the same mechanics. Metroid Prime. Mario Maker. Galaxy is quite different from Sunshine, which is quite different from 64. Star Fox Adventures. Excitetruck. Kid Icarus Uprising. Kirbys Epic Yarn. Etc. Nintendo has never been lacking in innovation, creativity, and new ideas. Great video. :)
I don't think WARIOware really counted as a new IP, sense ya know Wario. also that second paragraph doesn't really counterdick with the idea that Nintendo realize on brand awareness, especially when you considered Kirby epic yarn wasn't meant to be a Kirby game, at one point they just said, 'hey let's throw Kirby in here'. *lets not note Hal laboratory dose not equal Nintendo I suppose I would say they do really on brand awareness a fair bit but to say they don't innovate is a bit far, see the switch itself, but also denying that they really on brand awareness a bit is a bit far as well.
This is such an amazing backstory for how this guy created the franchise. Not to mention Splatoon already quickly became the best online multiplayer game I've played in existence and it has a ton of real charm unlike other ones such as Team Fortress 2 and Overwatch. By the way, I wonder if there will be a backstory for ZUN and the Touhou series on this channel.
I remember the first release of the global test fire for Splatoon 1 I felt in love. And still, this game changed my life :) I feel I am going to cry somebody help :)
Good stuff, a lot of interviews and facts about the development tend to get scattered with them being from multiple interviews spanning over several years, it's nice to have well made videos like these that not only collect the key points from a variety sources, but tell it in a way that respects the feeling fans have for it's significance.
A Simple idea can lead to a torrent of colors and shades of gameplay. A idea that has many changes throughout its development, changes that are for the better. A game can't just be made because you want money or fame, but instead you need the passion and motivation to make them a reality. Combine that with the skill to code the game itself, and eventually you finally see your ideas come together in a amazing blend of color. That's what I got from the process of Splatoon's development, at least.
Funny enough, the Squid Kids are 14+ yrs of age so ur created character can b of any age. Even adult age (examples being Marina is 18 and Pearl is 21; and with the squid sisters being currently 19 yrs old in the sequel). ;) lol
The intro is a major turn-off for the video, as it essentially reinterates Nintendo hater narrative. I'd expect some more critical thinking. Nintendo releases plenty of new IPs each gen, but they never count because reasons. I also can't remember people being all that extatic about Splatoon after its reveal.
Dude, Splatoon took off like crazy!! You forgot E3 2004 did you? People were AGOG with seeing people play Splatoon, and we ate up all the demos. ua-cam.com/video/8L54s2m1dPs/v-deo.html Seriously, look at the views and up thumbs.
One interesting thing about the character design in Splatoon is that they created the inkling girl first and only after making sure they got her right, they made the boy version. In fact, canonically, all the "agents" of the story (1, 2, 3, 4 and 8), the newscasters/idols and most of the octoling enemies are female. But the most interesting thing is that everyone seems to be OK with it, and many straight men, like myself, have no problems using female avatars (probably because there is no voice chat and both versions are functionally identical).
Cynel1 That 2D testing world was certainly an interesting way to develop a game. And they might never have thought to do things that way if Mario Maker hadn't been in development when they started on BotW.
I think they created the characters first, skid spraying ink and that stuff, and make then resemble rabbits (the inkling girl at least) just to appeal. But there's no way for me to know for sure but makes more sense to me this way. xD Also, you forgot to tell aboult Vocaloid, how the inkling voices resemble synthesized voices, i know how Westerns aren't aware but there's a BUNCH of music producers making really awesome musics, mostly of then have that young vibe. They got inspiration from the IDOLS singers too. Great video, but there's some pop culture from japan references missing in it. I mean, A LOT OF IT. 😜
Even though I already know most of Splatoon's development history, your narration and art make them so interesting to watch again
Same, honestly.
Splatoon has some damn good music.
Yeah!!!
Really? What’s the lyrics then?
@@Strikery the inevitable death of the human race and how we have failed as a society
You have to make a few mistakes before you hit a success
Wise words Vyan
OMG VIAN HIII
True dat :D
Oml it’s vian

As far as I know, Miyamoto was questioning why they used rabbids.
I recently got splatoon 2, and I have been trying to find the origins for awhile now! I look on my notifications and i see you guys uploaded! You completed my quest of trying to find the origins.
Quest? Does that mean it took you more than a month to search "Splatoon Origins" on google?

That Miyamoto thing was long debunked, but it keeps living on.
Spla-tale.
Wonderful video. (:

NPChilla The Wonderful 101 was more from Platinum, same with both of the others you mentioned.
John Walsh No, Codename S.T.E.A.M was codeveloped with Intelligent Systems (a second party) and Xenoblade was developed by a Nintendo subsidiary, Monolith Soft.
That's why Nintendo owns the IPs.
NPChilla Oh.
THINK YOU CAN TAKE ME?!?!?
Emm Bee Sea Yep, we can start off with a nice dinner and maybe the cinema, then I'd take you home like a gentlemen.
WOOMY MY FRIENDS

Great video. :)
Beautifully said.
The intro and "moral" of that video is indeed a major facepalm.
(Advanced Wars was the GBA version of the Wars IP, that debuted as Famicom Wars in 1988 in Japan)
Even they are different from regular games Age Brain, Wii Sports and Wii Fit sold well
I don't think WARIOware really counted as a new IP, sense ya know Wario.

Thank you for this great birthday gift!
MZ_ swag it's my friends birthday too lol

One thing that bothers me is that Kotor used Splatoon 2 hairstyles in a video about Splatoon.
BUT STILL THIS VIDEO IS GREAT!
At long last, the Splatoon video I've been anticipating!
Great Job, and thank you!
Oh darn
I love this video
Thank you for making this video. I love splatoon.
Thank you for this video! Thanks for your time and your work :)
Splatoon will live until dawn
Don't worry guys, you'll get your big break soon enough, this is too good of content to go unnoticed forever!
Love your art and with your voice it just makes me want to come back for more grand job
Really liked this Video Game Story Time!
Wonderful video again!
Wonderful video. You guys must really do your research, this is amazing!

Nice. Interesting to see that Nintendo game development hasn’t changed in 30 years. Helps to make decent games
Honestly, this is their most brilliant idea ever. I never saw squids the same ever again after Splatoon.
Funny enough, the Squid Kids are 14+ yrs of age so ur created character can b of any age.
Even adult age (examples being Marina is 18 and Pearl is 21; and with the squid sisters being currently 19 yrs old in the sequel). ;) lol
Even the general producer of the Splatoon series is Shigeru Miyamoto!
Great vid!

For real? Even on Wii U Splatoon was absolutely everywhere I saw

How come we’re only just talking about this. It was revealed like 2 years ago
I hope the next story is on Breath of the wild Called Hidemaro Fujibayashi breaking conventions with the 2D Prototype (Breath of the wild)
Cynel1
That 2D testing world was certainly an interesting way to develop a game. And they might never have thought to do things that way if Mario Maker hadn't been in development when they started on BotW.
Renard Prower how do you know that
its cool that capcom didn''t sue them for using TOFU!
Awesome video, guys =)
I know the origins and have Splatoon 2 but this is amazing! I guess you can say that it was, fresh.
I think they created the characters first, skid spraying ink and that stuff, and make then resemble rabbits (the inkling girl at least) just to appeal.
