In the 70's my first apartment was $130 a month rent. Granted it was in an old frame house, second floor, but it was clean. Only the kitchen & bedroom (connected) shared heat from a wall mounted space heater. The small front bedroom and the living room & also the bathroom in the back of the apartment were freezing in the winters. Oh, and it was right next to the clattering el train. Such a quirky apartment. I have fond memories of that place. I wish young people could spread their wings independently with a first apartment---affordably---today as I did back then, without roommates. Having my own space was the whole point of moving out of my childhood home at age 20. What a great time the 70's were. P.S. I found out recently that that building has been fully rehabbed and rent for that 2 floor apartment is now around $1200. Times sure have changed.

@@thecatatemyhomework It doesn't matter if income has gone up, rents in NYC are outrageous. Even the outer boroughs are no longer doable for many people. Current NYC rents are not commensurate with most current salaries. *In the past, rent was actually one weeks salary.* I don't know many people who earn $3000-$6000 a week. Because rents were affordable in the past, few people needed roommates. Years ago, a friend was able to attend college, work part-time and rent an apartment, he did this without needing a roommate or getting financial help from his family! In fact, he's still in the same apartment.
@@thecatatemyhomework Well this was Chgo. not NYC, I should have mentioned that. Still $1200 is not dirt cheap anywhere. For the rents people pay in NYC, there are few amenities within the building or unit. And frankly the same here in Chgo's more high end neighborhoods. The landlord/bldg mgmt laughs at the chumps willing to pay sky high rents for location snobbery. But still have no parking, no laundry, not even a grocery store nearby, just trendy bars that come & go, high crime & rats! It's just foolish.
Nice apartments but I question this per person math ------what if you cannot find 4 compatible people to divide up the rent------what if one or two people can not pay the rent on some months-------what if one or two people move out and stick the others with the total figure. Sounds like extra risk most of us do not need.
Just two roommates can pay depending on their income. I know two women one is a graphic designer, the other is a nurse. They live in Brooklyn, NYC. Their rent is $4,5000 for 3 bdrms, 1&1/2 bathroom & kitchen. They’re able to pay rent, utilities, car note & all their basic needs without a third roommate. Sometimes it’s who you know $$$$ not what you know!!!
@@SweetDreamz0223 Nurses in NYC make top dollar, so do people who work in the arts, especially freelance graphic designers and art directors. The operative work is freelance. Cash, we love the videos and your work ethic, but you gotta stop pretending you can fit a couch and entertainment center in these small awkward spaces. You need room to walk around and most of the time the place you suggest to put a TV wouldn't even be visible from the couch.
Evan W, I always say the same, *these tiny hovels are NEVER shown staged.* There is never any furniture in these tiny overpriced spaces. Talk about duping potential renters.
Being born and raised in Scotland, I’m really confused by New York rent listings. The 4 bedroom would need to be advertised as an HMO (House of multiple occupancy) property with locks on individual bedroom doors. I’m also really curious to know how many growing families are living in areas closer to central New York, how many have been forced out due to the rent prices and how many are forced to live in overcrowded housing? How is a toddler going to pay $875 a month?
I was Questiong this too well it seems easy for roomates to pay 3k for 4 rooms it is afordable but what is with single parents or 1 working parents bc the other cant for reasons that need that? But i saw other vidoes and oh boy who can pay rent and other basic survival things (insurance, food, emergency money) with this prizes?!
A few things are happening: families are leaving the city (NYC DOE has about 20,000 less students this year), families live in much smaller than you would expect apartments (Multiple kids to a room, putting up temp walls to create more rooms), they have government assistance or subsidized housing, and some people are in fact wealthy enough to be able to afford this. I work in Manhattan and if I wanted to live in a studio less than 350sq ft I could live three blocks away for $3000+ a month and my utilities probably wouldn’t be included. I sometimes work with students whose families can afford a three bed in the same area.
@@wannabeartist2023 Heck if I know on both counts. I moved just north of the city but still on the train lines so I could afford an apartment without a roommate. I know a family that converted a one bed with a large open basement to have four divided areas for kids rooms. But that meant one bathroom for 6. No clue how they survived. It’s wild and all these luxury apartments drive up the prices
I live in a large vintage two bedroom condo just one block from Chicago city limits and these videos are so educational in terms of what is desirable and what you can get elsewhere. Every time I hear the measurements of rooms which are way smaller than any of my rooms (and several people living in this smaller space), I am grateful of the space I have.
Yea these videos always make me feel like i live in a mansion, i live in a one bedroom in Manhattan, but its a prewar building and rent stabilized, $960 and i live alone and i have yet to see cash show an apt where each “room” that much isnt wayyy smaller than mine 😂 some of these “apts” literally fit in my living room 🙃
For NY standards, the 4 bedroom could probably just be rented by 2 people, each getting 2 bedrooms and a bathroom each at $1750. Or agree to convert one of the bedrooms into a better lit living room and the other spare bedroom into a shared office/gaming/guest/whatever room. Seems like a good deal, but I don't know what neighborhood in Brooklyn this is.
Why do so many of these apartments make you go thru a bedroom to get to the backyard/patio? The 1st 1 is really nothing more than a glorified studio. There's no room for a table & chairs & living room furniture in the common area. 1 washer & dryer for how many apartments? That's ridiculous & we can see why with that sign
This is so strange to me. I live in NYC & my kitchen leads to my backyard. Most people I know there’s is the same way. Didn’t realize so many had to go through a bedroom to get to the backyard!!!
Far as I can tell, due to the terrible block dimensions, lots are skinny and only the narrow front and back get light, so you don't waste it for access. That's also why glass doors are everywhere. Originally, these doors entered common space, which now has been subdivided into additional bedrooms.
You could fit a small table and chair set in the kitchen or a couch but there's really not room for both. I'd make the bedroom the living room and get a futon to sleep on at night to make the most use of the kitchen.
Did you ever try out the oven door in the 4 bedroom? The door handle on the cabinet under the sink looks like it will block the oven from opening. I used to do kitchen design so I like to pick apart any kitchen layout!
You make me want to live in the City. Plus, I am getting great ideas on how I want to renovate my rentals. Thank you! It is great to have you back home on the US soil! 💕
The studio apt would be my choice! I live in a small studio now (250sqft). The bedroom would be perfect for a Murphy bed storage set. And some comfy chairs with a tv on a swivel wall mount. The kitchen add some stylish storage shelving surrounding the small 4 person dining table . Just remember when it comes to small spaces you go up utilizing wall space not go out which makes the space cramped with no flow. I find tiny living wonderful as it increases your creativity and limits material acquisition. Which I think saves you money on crap you don’t need and you can use it toward seeing the world around you.
The one-bedroom unit doesn't impress me. As for the other one, a four-way sharing of a small apartment is risky, and though you may think the other three are friends, they might not be after a month or two. One or more may have outrageously bad habits, and you may end up being the only one who cleans the bathroom or washes the dishes (there's no dishwasher here). One or more may be a late-night freak, or plays loud rap constantly, or showers only once a month. One or more may always be short when the rent is due. If you can navigate those minefields, maybe this unit will work for you, but I'm not that much of a gambler. The price isn't bad if you are. One washing machine is inadequate for the whole building, and we don't know how long a hike it is to the subway.
LOL I've personally experienced all of that. I'll never go back to living with roommates. I've only had one amazing roommate, she was clean and quiet. It's a hit or miss with roommates unfortunately.

These apartments are really nice. I like the finishes; the wood in the bathrooms is a nice touch. I'd move into that studio in a heartbeat, as that outdoor space is really great! The only problem is there's no storage space, but with enough cabinets you could make up for that. And it looks like each unit has its own water heater which is good. The four bedroom would be best split by two people; maybe two couples. Nice cheap rent! I'm guessing the area is not very desirable for those working in Manhattan

Title is kinda misleading - and there’s no way I’d pay $875 for that last room! Teeny closet & window makes for a depressing winter in NYC! I’ll take the “one bedroom”(hahaha) and turn ½ the bedroom into the living room with access to the back patio. Treating it like a studio would allow for the kitchen to be a kitchen and guest access to the patio through the bedroom.
Cheaper to live in the middle of rural nowhere, and have a window sized high resolution screen playing a live feed of traffic with 3d audio so when the sirens are audible, you can also get the exact auditory tone shifting as if they were really driving past at 3am even. 👁️👁️
Love the neighbourhood tour Cash. I'd plump for the small apartment for the luxury of being on my own. The idea of sharing with other people does not appeal to me.
Hey Cash! First off, I love watching your videos just to get a boo at New York because sadly I can't afford to visit anymore. I live in Toronto, Canada, another place that has horribly high rents for what you get. This is a great apartment and the space can be utilised in so many ways. You just have to get creative with storage and furniture placement.
"Why aren't there more places like this, they could save the city!" Growing up, the city was loaded with cool places, independently owned, and affordable living places. People with lots of money moved in and drove up the rents, and big box retailers drove out all the small, colorful businesses that made the city what it was.
That’s exactly what I learned (not the only thing) from my high school economics class. Is if people spend more money, inflation increases and who has the most money? Rich ppl.
I am a musician, and thank God I got established in NYC and bought my apartment before things got stupid. There used to be a bumper sticker that said, "Artists are people who make neighborhoods hip and safe for everyone else."
Yeah, unless you went in with three friends, you could rent the place with three potential rapists, thieves, slobs, serial killers, porn addicts, drug abusers, etc ... or strippers, if you hit the lottery
"Do not forget your clothes for more than one day in the laundry"?!?!?!? In my laundry room, if you leave your stuff for more than 5 minutes, its out and on a shelf.
My laundry room even has an official sign from the washing machine company. It says if you do not come down and remove your laundry on time the tenants have a right to remove it and put it on the table.
$3500 for a four bedroom fully renovated apartment? Wow… I didn’t think it existed in NY and that’s when you invite three friends to share the place with you, its affordable at $875 per person. Unlike the dump in the West Village we looked at yesterday, my attitude to the place, when do I sign up? Cash really did his homework on this one and I’m in love!
You might not be in love with the long commute to Manhattan and I noticed no mention of a train stop nearby. I do like the neighborhood and would take the studio with the backyard area.
I would think it would be pretty rare to find three friends all looking for a place at the same time. And chances are, if you found them and all move in together, you won't be friends long. Renting rooms in my house I found out one really important thing...you never really know people until you've lived with them.
Norman F Birnberg, Question, it is REALLY a true FOUR bedroom. Ponder that. I remember one apartment video I saw years ago, *it showed a so-called "three bedroom" on the LES, the landlord called a literal hallway, a bedroom! I am not kidding! Outrageous.*
In the second apartment the stove door looks like it won’t open as the cabinet door handle will stop that. Don’t like either apartment for a lot if reasons.

He told us it wouldn't matter how they said it was ok, and to expect them to justify it.. but that in reality it would be the end... I never ever forgot that. Amazon jungle is under development.
Unfortunately the cost of materials for construction and building repair has gone way up.
It sounds great for four college friends who aren't timid about every possible problem that might develop.
Exactly! Why go through all that trouble when you can just find people who rent rooms! You can pay so much less.
@@SweetDreamz0223 maybe they are doing some freelance work to make rent
@@SweetDreamz0223 Nurses in NYC make top dollar, so do people who work in the arts, especially freelance graphic designers and art directors. The operative work is freelance. ONLY USING CAPS FOR ME TO SEE BETTER - THE LAUNDRY ROOM IS ONE FOR A HOUSE & NOT AN APARTMENT BUILDING.
The title of this video is super misleading! This is not an SRO (Single Room Occupancy) unit. It's a 4-bedroom apartment for $3,500/mo.

It’s wild and all these luxury apartments drive up the prices
I live in a large vintage two bedroom condo just one block from Chicago city limits and these videos are so educational in terms of what is desirable and what you can get elsewhere. Every time I hear the measurements of rooms which are way smaller than any of my rooms (and several people living in this smaller space), I am grateful of the space I have.
i live in texas and that studio apt is smaller than my kitchen and living room combined lol
What is a "vintage" condo?
The one washer and dryer situation is a bit ridiculous. Considering that is a 3-4 story building with about 3 apartments on each floor.
I agree about the washer and dryer situation though.
Did you ever try out the oven door in the 4 bedroom? The door handle on the cabinet under the sink looks like it will block the oven from opening. I used to do kitchen design so I like to pick apart any kitchen layout!
I came here for this. Thinking the same thing and was really hoping he'd open the oven.
I do believe you are right. I guess you could take the handle off the cabinet.
I noticed that too…it almost looked like you’d have to open the cabinet door to open the oven…
There's something weird about the handles. the one by the stove is off

I also live in a studio, just under 700 feet. Cleans up fast, enough room for me and my birdies.

Such a shame that millennials and gen z can't afford to leave home, and older adults have to live with roommates. New York is forcing people to leave.
Yeah it’s really sad. My parents live in the city and when I left I made sure to buy my own place right across the bridge to their place.
