True story. I grew up in a town outside Toronto and they lived in the next town. It was 80 '81' We heard music coming from the factories and we climbed on the dumpsters to watch in the window and saw them rocking out making the most impressive sounds I've ever heard. They saw us and came out and talked to us about hockey That's what we Canadians do 😂) we talked about the music they were making and their cars they're cars were gorgeous. They talked to us about a half hour and then Geddy and Alex gave us guitar picks and Neil gave us drumsticks they were so down to earth and humble and when I was older I was lucky enough to see them live in 88 and 03. In 03 I saw them in front of 500,000 crazy Canadians. The first live show was incredible as well the guitar solos and the drum solo were Epic. If you want react to a Rush treasure who no one really reacts to is a song called Battlescar it's Rush with another Canadian band Max Webster it's a really sick song I know you would appreciate and True Rush fans would love to see you react to it. Peace out ✌️ ☮️

Great reaction! You mentioned how hard it is to make a song or album and you are right. Especially because Geddy Lee, in particular, was/is a perfectionist when it came to making albums. He labored extensively over every performance and mixing process. I'm ready his book right now ("My 'Effing Life") and he talks about how he used to drive himself "to distraction" over the recording process. Alex is also a perfectionist, in his own way, but not as anal retentive as Geddy. Neil was also a perfectionist but his "passion" extended to his performance -- getting the right take -- but, as I understand it, he didn't do as much with mixing and all the post-recording process. That was Geddy's "favorite headache", to borrow a euphemism he coined. Anyway, I also used to a drummer in a working band and I've spent many hours at the recording studio and it is very taxing. But, it's all a part of the life we love, being musicians.

    • @AceofBadeReacts
      @AceofBadeReacts  Місяць тому +1

Yeah being perfectionists can add to the stress of writing what you love, not knowing if the general audience will love or hate it

Watch them in live videos!!! With this video, they show the individual musicians playing separate parts, during the studio recording! But the amazing thing is when they play this live, Geddy plays bass, sings, & plays the keyboards with his feet, while Alex uses occasional loops to sustain a sound while he switches to a different guitar part, while Neil is just fantastic on the drums & percussion, while writing 99% of the lyrics! Phenomenal band, RIP Neil!!!

The older on-stage footage in the video is made up of random scenes from their Farewell To Kings and Xanadu music videos filmed in 1977. The Limelight video was filmed in the winter of 1980/81.

  • @debbieplato5107
    @debbieplato5107 Місяць тому +6

This was filmed at Le Studio in Morin Heights, Quebec. It was a studio used by a lot of musicians at that time. It was secluded but not that far away from Toronto so they were able to spend more time with their families. That was a older footage of them probably playing La Villa Strangiato from the 70's that they intertwined in the video.
Limelight came out in the early 80's.
The song especially Alex Lifeson's solo has a bittersweet feel to it. Neil Peart wrote the lyrics and he was a quiet private person and as their fame rose the more the adoration and the infringement on their personal lives happened. This was uncomfortable for Neil.
    Songs he used the Xylophone
on. There are many. Xanadu from Exit Stage Left (banger performance!!)
La Villa Strangiato official music video 🤯
Any of Neil Peart's drum solos.
Circumstances is another song where Neil talks about trying to get his career going and how it effected him once he did.
Geddy Lee just released his autobiography called My Effin Life. I am reading it now and it is excellent. It really gives you an idea of lives of the band and the music scene and how it effected their families.

Studios were very expensive to set up in the 70s and there weren't many of them in Canada. Le Studio had an international reputation and an associated residence. Many famous bands recorded there: The Bee Gees, David Bowie, Jeff Healey Band, April Wine, Sting, Corey Hart, Luba and Rush, of course. After the founding engineer retired and recording equipment got cheaper and cheaper, Le Studio faded into the sunset. PS. Morin Heights is a six hour drive from downtown Toronto

Yes, "3 or 4 different recordings by himself" and yet... and yet... they were also able to play that song many hundreds of times live - every time in a single take. Crazy talent.

@@AceofBadeReacts, they first recorded there for 1979’s Permanent Waves and returned for the next four albums, if memory serves. Le Studio had a star-studded client history but, sadly, it eventually went out of business and the place lies in ruins today.
Oh, and all but one of the songs on Moving Pictures were actually written at Ronnie Hawkins’ farm (which housed a recording studio) northeast of Toronto. “The Hawk” (who passed recently) was a legendary character responsible for establishing a music scene in Toronto. He was a 50’s transplant from Arkansas who had some early rockabilly hits, but was best known for having assembled and mentored Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, The Band.

They were supposed to have been preparing a live album and then touring it, but decided instead to go right back into studio. Permanent Waves had effectively broke them on FM radio in North America and propelled them into platinum-level sales and arena-sized concert territory.
That advice was initially given to them by their friend, Cliff Burnstein, who was the guy who had signed them to Mecury in '74. A couple of years after providing this advice, Burnstein co-founded the music production company, Q-Prime, which has managed Metallica since 1984.
About the decision to go right back into the studio to record Moving Pictures (striking while the iron was hot, so to speak), Geddy Lee has called it the second best decision the band ever made. The first was refusing to relent to all of the pressure from Mercury and their own management team to step back from progressive epics (which seemed to have failed miserably with the poor reception of their third album (in just two years) 1975's Caress of Steel).
Instead of providing the (somewhat) more radio friendly tunes that they would ultimately deliver in '79 and '80 with Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures, Neil, Geddy, and Alex said [Screw] it, resolving instead to make the album they wanted to make, 1976's 2112. Considered their (first) opus, this record contained only five songs, with the entire first side of the record containing a 7-suite masterpiece called 2112 ("twenty one twelve"). Notwithstanding its length and distinct lack of any song even remotely radio friendly), 2112 became their most successful album at the time and would eventually go multi-platinum in the US, UK, and Canada.

Re: the xylophone, there were a number of songs on which it was used, although one needs to clarify what the "it" is/was.
For the analog version you saw in the video, I would suggest "Closer to the Heart" and "Xanadu" - both of which featured even more percussion than just a glockenspiel and drums... we're talking cow bell and a big-@ss set of chymes too!
For the digital xylophones he came to use as soon as the tech existed, the best song to check out would actually be one of Peart's drum solos (which varied over time, but always had some of the same, melodic components). Most commonly suggested would be his live Frankfurt solo from 2004.

The room I was in just echoed because of hardwood floor. There's a decent amount of reactions in that room, but I just moved to a new location and there's no echo

Great reaction!!! I would suggest the songs below to add to your Rush journey and reactions (ones that you haven't reacted to yet). All of these are absolutely fire!!! Especially all of the LIVE instrumentals with Geddy’s Bass, Alex’s Guitar, and Neil’s percussive artistry.
    - La Villa Strangiato - Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (Instrumental - custom "carnival" intro) - original was 1978. Pure musicianship!!! UNMATCHED - best instrumental EVER.
    - Working Man... Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (original studio version was in 1974)...The pure sight and performance of three men in their upper 50's take control of the stage and perform and play like they were in their 20's.
    - YYZ…live from Rio in 2002 (instrumental)…original was 1981
    - Best Intro Ever - Live version (R30 tour 2004) - various riffs from their 1970's songs leading into Spirit of Radio - original was 1980
    - Closer to the Heart (Live 1998 Different Stages) - original was 1977
    - The Garden (Clockwork Angels tour live) - original was 2012
    - Subdivisions...studio version or live version - original was 1982
    - Freewill... Live from Snakes and Arrows Tour 2007 - original was 1980
    - Fly by Night - original was 1975
    - Leave that Thing Alone - Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (Instrumental) - original was 1993
    - Malignant Narcissism (instrumental) and Drum Solo - Live 2008 Snakes and Arrows Tour - original was 2007
    - Also...Neil Peart's Drum Solo Live from Frankfurt 2004. He was The Professor...a pure musician and percussionist...not just a "drummer". Be ready to be amazed by not just his hand coordination...but most of all his foot coordination...basically his feet being completely individual in timing from his hands during segments of this performance. He was the master of this technique.

They are recording at Le Studio, which is around 60 miles north of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in the laurentiens, which is cottage country with forest, mountains, and lakes. It was a famous recording studio in the 70's, 80's & 90's, but went out of business as computers and home recording took over. The Police recorded there, David Bowie, Bryan Adams, April Wine, and many others. There was a small lake right behind the studio, and a guest house that the bands would live in while they were there. The video for Tom Sawyer was also recorded in there. Sadly. it's all gone now, just an empty lot. In this particular video, the stage shots are actually the song Xanadu, I don't really like how they did that, but the song is about living on the lighted stage, so i guess that why they did it. I don't think Geddy was wearing a jumpsuit, I think it's just a matching sweatshirt & sweat pants, but who knows, maybe he was still wearing his pajamas !

Oh people said different songs for the live performance. I think it was a nice touch. It showed multiple aspects of being a band

As Geddy stated... it's P 'ear' t. Like your ear. That being said, even Taylor Hawkins said Pert.

@AceofBadeReacts Yeah, that was an inside joke on various episodes because Seth MacFarlane is a huge Rush fan. Same with Trailer Park Boys. In fact, Bubbles can do a mean 'Closer to the Heart' . It's on YT... check it out.

I think the stage stuff was from their Xanadu video, which was shot live on stage, but without an audience, same as the Closer to the heart video, they don't use double neck guitars in Limelight.
