Hello! Seems everyone is asking why I didn't just turn on the subtitles. I would rather watch the film without subtitles because it is less distracting if the film is in English and it doesn't make sense to have someone keep turning them on and off when a movie switches languages. The movie should have had subtitles for the Japanese segments built into the film but it did not and so I assumed that was just how it was supposed to be viewed as again, why do I need to turn on subtitles for a whole movie just to understand a small portion of it? Seems like this has been a problem on a few Netflix movies I have seen such as District 9 and now Kill Bill (both volumes). I hope that makes sense as to why I didn't have them on/turn them on!

Well, of course, the original release (and home video releases) _did_ have the hardsubs. So yeah, this is definitely a Netflix problem. Or maybe online video in general. I get why they do it: they can provide subtitles for multiple languages with just one video stream. Ideally, they should have a subtitle track with just subtitles for the foreign-language bits. But at the very least, they really need to do something so people are aware of the problem, like a notice that displays at the start: "Subtitles may be needed to understand parts of this film". Or something.
As for you, maybe your fans could warn you of things like this ahead of time.

First a note: Quentin works in two established universes for his movies. One is called the *Realer Than Real* universe, it's associated with dark and gritty crime movies often with bloody shootouts and liberal use of "foul language" but things have real consequences and people die, generally, to normal physics. You've already seen this universe in _Reservoir Dogs_ and _Pulp Fiction._ The other is called the *Movie Movies* universe and represents the movies that would be watched by the people in the *Realer Than Real* universe. Its physical rules are loose, and his already bloody scenes are amplified by an order of magnitude, this is what you've just experienced. If you look back to _Pulp Fiction_ and listen to Mia Wallace describe _Fox Force Five_ you'll see a lot of similarity to this movie, maybe The Bride was actually played by Mia Wallace in the *Realer Than Real* universe.
There might be more than one subtitle option in Netflix. When I was a member there would be multiple options for English, one would put them up for every part of the movie for hearing impaired and the other would put them up when non-English was spoken in the movie. But when you just have them on off none are displayed. Hard coded subtitles in movies went out a long time ago with digital distribution being standard, since DVD's came out basically.

    • @BEBruns

I just checked. Netflix only has an all or nothing option for subtitles. Which is just more proof that Netflix is the enemy of the serious movie fan. I ran into just the opposite problem when they carried The Third Man. In the movie, multiple languages are spoken but the protagonist only speaks English. None of the foreign dialogue was subtitled. But for some reason, Netflix decided to add subtitles that couldn’t be turned off.

The stunts they wouldn't let her do were done by Zoe Bell (Lucy Lawless's stunt double in Xena: Warrior Princess).

People aren't exaggerating about the subtitles. Also, why don't they let you watch it as it was originally shown in the cinema (subtitles only for non-English scenes). I'm not a big fan of subtitles over English, so appreciate not wanting to have them on thru the whole movie. But unfortunately, you're going to miss half the movie without them.

The Soundtrack was put together by "The Rza" who is a Hip Hop producer and founding member of Quentin Tarantino's favourite rap group "WUTANG CLAN". As with this movie, Wutang Clan's music is heavily influenced by Martial Arts movies from the 60's and 70's. Rza sampled a lot of dialogue and sounds from those movies on most of Wutang Clan's albums and he also put together sounds for this movie as well as the music such as the sound of the swords when they're swung through the air and in fact- the name "Wutang" is the sound a sword makes ...."Wu" is the sound it makes when swung through the air and "tang" is the sound it makes when clashing onto another sword or shield

The Music that plays during the O-Ren-Flashback actually *is* from an Old School Western: _The Grand Duel_ from 1972, composed by Luis Bacalov.
Generally, Tarantino usually tracks his films with pre-existing music, often from Western-Scores by Ennio Morricone... until he actually hired Morricone himself to do the Score for _The Hateful Eight._

There is coloured version for the crazy 88 fight. it is very hard to get but it shouldn't matter unless you are a completionist or absolute movie enthusiast.
but still it doesn't matter that much, black and white is still cool and you still see every scene except Sofie losing her 2nd arm before being kicked downhill into the hospital.
And people saying black and white is paying homage to the classic kung fu movies. its not. they did black and white to lower the rating by one level.
the coloured version is called Kill Bill - The Whole Bloody Affair, and its not cut 2 two movies, just 1 whole movie, and you can only get it via unconventional means. its released in Japan uncensored and also can be found in Japanese DVD.
it was also not supposed to be 2 parts. its just too long for cinema length, so Quentin is forced to cut it.

The trademark symbol on Bill's sword indicates the manufacturer of the sword. (More to come on that, farther into the story) I don't THINK it's a dragon, though. Am willing to be corrected by anyone having inside info.
You're the first reactor who's picked up on O-Ren being disposed of before the Vernita/"bleep" showdown happened.
Your DVD should be able to provide subtitles for the French & Japanese speeches. Subtitles were provided for theater viewers.
You can see Sophie and Bill's silhouettes in the anime flashback when the bride was being worked over.
There IS a color version of the Tokyo nightclub sword fight.
So . . .all things considered, that snow should have been redder from all the blood.
You'll know "bleep"s name by the end of Volume 2!

Somewhat like Shakespeare in the original Klingon, it comes from a 19th-century French novel by Sue, but is sometimes attributed to de Laclos' 18th-century _Les Liaisons Dangereuse_ although the exact phrase isn't used there. Since Khan also quotes extensively from _Moby Dick_ he may very well know that.

Thanks for another awesome reaction, I love this movie and always thought it was a good style and brought back memories of old Japanese movies with the western style. A lot of western films were based on old Japanese films even Star Wars was based on The Hidden Fortress, characters Tahei and Matashichi are the original C3P0 and R2D2, with many of the other characters too (worth a watch even if probably not suitable for a reaction). This particular movie is heavily based in story and style of a 1970s movie called Lady Snowblood, especially final fight scene, and he used the main actress songs from this movie as a nice acknowledgement to Meiko Kaji's inspiration, oh and apparently she had nice feet too naughty Quentin.

I didn't even see this in the Imdb trivia, but the masks the Crazy 88 are wearing are homages to Kato's (Bruce Lee's) in The Green Hornet TV series from the 60s. They even played the theme song (Flight of the Bumblebee) when The Bride is flying to Japan.
I just watched my Blu-Ray version last night, and it had subtitles for most if not all of the Japanese dialogue. Lots of good stuff in there, although you got the gist of most of it. (One joke you would have missed -- the whiny assistant in the restaurant says "I'm not bald. I shaved my head!")
And mentioned elsewhere, I believe you missed the bit at the beginning where it said the quote was an Old Klingon proverb. Because of the volume of blood, the scene would have had to be redone or mostly cut to avoid a worse rating. Removing the color was a decent compromise. how come you don't have / use subtitles, the japanese and french parts are all subtitled by default. You missed all the storytelling dialogue.
if they are talking in foreign language for more than 2 sentences, it should be understood that the director is not letting the audience watch without understanding

22:45 "how is anyone not concerned that she has a sword" - because she's Uma-fukin-Thurman... in Bright Yellow.
Would YOU attempt to stop her?

"One more thing, Sofie... is she aware her daughter is still alive?"
BOOM! That's how you do a cliffhanger!! 😎
Fun Fact: Despite being bleeped out in the film, the name of The Bride (Uma Thurman) is revealed on her plane tickets.
Batter-Up Fact: The shot where the Bride splits a baseball in two with a samurai sword was done for real on the set. It was done by Zoë Bell, Uma Thurman's stunt double.
Boom! Head Shot! Fact: When Chiaki Kuriyama (Gogo) was shooting the scene where she flings her ball and chain out, she accidentally hit Quentin Tarantino on the head as he stood by the camera.
Casting Notes Fact: Quentin Tarantino originally intended to cast a Japanese actress to play O-Ren Ishii, but before casting began, he saw Lucy Liu's work in Shanghai Noon (2000) and immediately changed O-Ren into a Chinese-Japanese-American, so that Liu could play the part.

24:40 "we get the layout of everything, it's so cool" - yes, and this becomes very important in just a few minutes :D it's why the fight scene works - because we, as the audience, know all the ins and outs of this night club, without arousing suspicion. Until it goes to hell lol.
"Pictures tell a thousand words" - and never has it been so true.

Wow, I can't believe I found someone who points this out! Nobody calls instrumentals "pieces" anymore? Or "instrumentals"? Calling everything a "song", apart from being wrong, is just stupid.

20:00 "I think he's saying this sword is so sexy". Kinda. He's saying "If you encounter God on your travels, he will be cut."
"IT's the best thing I've made in my entire life!!" - kinda. He's saying "I have done what I swore an oath to God 28 years ago to never do again; I've created 'something that kills people'. And, in that purpose, I was a success. I can tell you with no ego, this is my finest sword. If on your journey, you should encounter God, God will be cut."
It's intentional to read the subtitles... oh gosh, what is to come lol.

You should always have subs on in case you are talking through a plot point.

It ruins the reaction when people don't turn on the subtitles in this movie. I love Ollie, but this was a bad decision. You should know how important and well written dialog is in Quentin Tarantino movies.
