- Taking to the hills of the Scottish Highlands for the COLDEST night camping I’ve EVER EXPERIENCED! A BLISTERINGLY COLD Solo Overnight!
Plans change with avalanche hazards considerable and a severe weather warning. I took to the hills of the Highlands for some fantastic views and a night of camping. Equipped with my Vango Heddon 100, Vango Microlite 300, Vango Aotrom Thermo Platinum and SOL Escape Bivvy, can I survive the night in temperatures as low as -9°C!?

Never been to that part of the UK. Looks stunning too. Your vid really conveyed to me the challenges of camping in very cold conditions and mishaps (such as the hole) that happen to anyone. Not nice being cold. Great effort.👍
Super beautiful place JD! And 100%, even in the most beautiful places nobody is immune to the conditions and mishaps. Appreciate the comment my friend and thanks for watching 👍
👍hats off to you fella that was a cold one enjoying the content as always
Much appreciated Dee, glad you enjoyed it my friend 👍
Can see you moving up here mate 😂
Here’s hoping Lenord! I do love it up there 👍
Awesome views. Well worth the journey. Thanks for sharing with us. Stay safe 😎
Absolutely worth the journey! Thanks for watching and for your comment Paul, glad you enjoyed 👍
That’s what you call proper camping
Camping camping! Cheers Keith 👍
Great effort on the video 👍👍👍
Many many thanks Dean 👍
This guy is hard as nails
Appreciate it Antony 👊
Wish I was with u lol... I need a winter camp.. Theys so many things you have to sort out eg. Fire, food, warmth.. Top man 👍🔥🇬🇧
Great video - it looked so peaceful there in the snow.
Super peaceful Nikells, it was wonderful 👍
@@TreeDeepOutdoors Hopefully there are more trips from the Highlands!
Beautiful vid and scenery ❤
Love the night lapses!
Those toe warmers, stick them to your socks! That way they go with you into your bag! That's what I do with them anyway!
Glad your survived! No joke those tents.
Thank you Nikki! I realised that with the toe warmers in the morning when I couldn’t get the other ones out of my boots 😂
Carry a empty bottle incase you need to pee during ther night. Not to save going out but instead to use as an instant hot water bottle. If you have two bottles its ideal in the morning for warming your boots. One option for very cold weather is carry a set of tubes that clip together. build a small fire and angle the tube through the fire into your tent you may need to create a holder for the tube the fire will heat the tube sucking cold air in at the bottom pushing hot air out at the higher end into your tent. good video
0°F or 18°C in 1976, hunting with brothers and step dad. Went to sleep around freezing and woke up with over 10 inches of snow around us. Luckily, we had cut up a lot of firewood since we couldn't go anywhere for a couple of days. No deer, either.
Holy moly man! Shows how quickly it can change!
I'm glad you made the best of the changeable weather - looks like you had fun. I have found the hand warmers inside the sleeping bag are good and keep you warm, but do increase the condensation in bivi bags in my experience.
Ah man, had a blast! Even with the temperatures, it was awesome! Hope you’re feeling better now brother! That’s nasty stuff that norovirus!
Thanks for this , I love the snow , I hate going out in it lol
Impressive bro and fair play to you👌👏 Nowt like a really, really cold night to test out the gear (and ones fortitude!👊💪)
100% brother! Thanks for your comment Marty 👊
well done. no nonsense vid. Onward and upwards. not sure if you could have kept a fire going most the night to fend off the cold more.... or even one of those set ups where you bury all the embers and let the heat warm up the tent of where your lying down.
Haven't watched this yet. Eagerly awaits
Hope you enjoyed it my friend 👍
TDO your adventures are a must watch. Fantastic views what a landscape at this time of year and you survived 😉
Always intrigued what you're up to next friend. Always pushing those boundaries
Well, at least you’ve been there, done that. Sometimes when you challenge yourself it goes sideways.
I hear that my friend! The only time we fail is when we don’t try 👊
I lived like that for 19 months in the Scottish Highlands but I did have a wood burner in my tent. Learnt a lot from it and about my capabilities. It's no fun being cold but I had and still have a Dutch army M90 sleeping bag with the liner which is good to -20C, they are huge though but I'd rather not be cold.
Love the tent in the dark with the light on in the snow from a few yards away. Kudos for the coooold! Good viewing.
That was some great views but Man U got to be careful in them conditions
100% brother!
That's insane! Awesome video!
Always appreciated Casey 👍
Just amazing ! ❤
Thank you Alice, glad you enjoyed 👍
Nothing a bit of duck tape won't fix👍
Fair play to you, another cool video
Appreciated Tony 👍
Scottish water hits different 😊
100% George!
I did the Alpine Assault/Survival course in 1996 and they got us to dig and live out of snow caves very very warm 🔥 🥵
Great video! Subscribed. 😊
You legend! Thanks for your support my friend 👊
Our bloody sleeping bags/Fart Sacks were huge took up most of our pack space but they did a great job 🔥
100% Zayne, I was considering taking my British Army Arctic bag but stupidly didn’t because of the weight and bulk of it. I was thinking about that when I was trying to thaw out 😂
@@TreeDeepOutdoors next time bro
Annoying with the hole but like you say it could have been worse. Great upload though :)
100% man! I actually forgot the tent came with a repair kit, so will hopefully be able to patch it up. I appreciate the comment, thanks for watching my friend 👍
Glad the tent's fire retardant worked! 😮 One thing to watch out for is Carbon Monoxide. It's never adviseable to use a stove or disposeable bbq inside a tent. The fire risk is obvious but the carbon monoxide has killed a fair few campers.
I watched Clay Hayes video about surviving the night in -14c yeah he didn't get much sleep either but to be fair he was roughing it in a lean to shelter of fir branches. Condensation a big factor in the tent especially with no wind, all that frost build up. Wonder whether the door would be better left open? I think you did a decent job considering you've never been out in -9c before. I got up on the Pennines in the snow twice last week and I was really glad for all the layers. Spare a thought for the poor buggers doing the Montane Spine race in that snow, 268miles of it with hardly any sleep. Another good video bud! Enjoy a warm trip back down South!
I think I watched that same Clay Hayes video - brutal stuff! Leaving the door open may have been a better option thinking about it, I may have to test that theory out if I’m ever in that situation again. I just checked out the Montane Spine Race, man, that’s insane! I appreciate your comment as always my friend, hope you’re doing well!
Well you got though the night but a hard one ,pity about bivvy bag ,I may stick with my gortex army bag don't fancy that happening to me ,and burning a hole in your tent ,you love that tent ,bet your gutted, but you survived the night mate ,better luck next time bud
I would now stick to a goretex Bivvy for sure Harry! Devastated about the hole in the tent but if I remember correctly the tent came with a repair kit..hopefully 😖! Thanks for watching my friend 👍
@@TreeDeepOutdoors good luck with fixing tent ,if all else fails get some gorilla tape on it ,and them hand warmers are a life saver in winter months, always use them, put two in bottom of my sleeping bag and I'm cozy warm all night, cos I'm a right cold arse lol
Oi are those burns on your hands ? 😮
Anything wrong with taking a hot water bottle to put inside the sleeping bag ? 😂😂😂
For someone who uses trekking poles would you recommend the heddon over the Nevis? I haven’t seen any other reviews for the heddon so far
100% would recommend the Heddon over the Nevis if you’re using trekking poles 👍
I've got that sleeping bag, it's good but not at that temperature.
I hear that Steve! From where I am down South I can use that bag pretty much year round with no issues but those temperatures, no chance 👍
@@TreeDeepOutdoors Hey mate, yeah I'm down South too, it's a great bag for sure and has kept me warm on many a chilly night, however, for the real harsh cold, or if I think it's getting a bit much, I always switch to my down bag.
i am curious how the internal condensation might be different with that survival bivvy, your initial test was outside, this time it was within a tent, you can saturate the air quickly in a tent, but yeah it's crap when you're cold from internal condensation, lol.
That’s very true John, I didn’t think about internal condensation. That would actually explain a lot!
a string vest helps a bit, any cloths that are wet are not directly on your skin cooling you@@TreeDeepOutdoors
👍👍👍🌚
👍👍👍
You clearly don't have a clue what you are doing and you're putting yourself in danger. Please stop camping on sub zero temperatures when you are so ill prepared.
