7 years later Neil is a gentleman, but he’s not close to the top of North America songwriters. In my arrogant opinion. Tom and the Heartbreakers are near the top. There catalog over the period of time is better than the Stones. Commercially speaking no doubt but I’m talking artistically. I love The Stones especially the Mick Taylor era. I may being confusing my sentiment, I hold both bands in the highest of esteems. I will arrogantly say again they are the best American band ever. Yes I’ve heard the Allman Brothers and I love them but The Heartbreakers connect to my soul on a different level. Mike Campbell is probably the most underrated musician at his skill set. I love his commitment to the band when he knows he can blow your face off whenever he wants. The thought is probably offensive to him. He reminds me of George Harrison on The Weight on Abbey Road. That’s George on that note and lick. To be so great and humble, I don’t come close but the humility usually comes after a night of jail.
Written by a native Southerner, sung by a native Southerner. He understands. Also listen to Rebels. He wasn't worrying about p.c.,just truth. Thank God for my Southern accent and thank God for allowing me to be born in the South.
Never fails to make me cry like a baby.... there is something so timeless... plaintive... it cuts straight to my heart. So many miles behind me now and yet miles to go before I sleep....
+Rich Robbins This always make me cry too :) May your sleep not be for many miles and may your journey always be smooth with friends to share the view :)
me too, heard it the first time watching that 30 year anniversary concert when he sang it in FLA - i'm a native Californian born 1956 which some people might not realize was full of southern accents when I was growing up and then later half my relatives moved to Lousiana.
Was listening to this yesterday, and the line "there's a dream I keep having, where my mama comes to me" hit me like a damn brick and I just cried. I hope he's with his mama now. Rest in peace.
When I first listened the song, I was around Broken Hills. NSW, Australia with an OZ & an Irish both with strong accent, I myself..a Japanese from the north end of the main island...,where people speak with the strong accent. Since then, the song has been my long time favorite.... I guess what I'm trying to say is the song is universal
I was born in '83 in Newfoundland Canada. I grew up listening to this music when my oldest brother played Tom Petty tapes :-) It's not only Americans that enjoyed Tom's music!
I was born, raised and ran in his hometown. I'm younger but I went to some of the same schools, grew up in the same neighborhood, played in the same park that he , his friends, and cousins played in and hopefully will be named for him. What a jab to the gut. Knocked the wind out of me. The upside is that he influenced so very many and that will transcend musically. He will always be around. Thanks Tom, from a home grown girl.
+Dan Carman Except for me, it was my Dad who was the Southerner. Mamma was a New Yorker, where I come from. (But I don't have much of a Yankee accent and I certainly don't call the Southern accent dumb). :-)
This song touches so many people of so many age groups. Tom was a true Southern rock artist & God love him for his contributions to music & to all of us & the memories from then & now. Thank you Mr. Petty for everything! I was a baby when my parents were loving your music& You. But it still seeped down to me, my generation & made a difference. What a beautiful artist & songwriter for the world to come together. We need to remember & embrace things of this beauty now more then ever. R.I.P.
One of my all time Favorite TP &tH's songs, and I'd the privilege of seeiung them SIX times in concert - they were always tight, sounded just like the studio mixes, and never once faded out or lip synched! Gotta hand it to Tom, there was 1 show where he told us (the audience), that after he broke his hand and "the doc said he'd never play guitar again, and he said "F*ck that!" and he is still playing. Rock on Tom, you're one of the greats!!
Southern accents is for me the greatest album ever, I’ll never forget the amazing beautiful and greatness that Tom Petty has always been for me and he never ever disappointed just got better and so did this world for what he gave us and he will live on forever god bless too all and thank you Tom Petty and the bad ass Heartbreakers
This is the song that hooked me when I saw this show on vh1… and it touches my Soul every time I hear it. Be proud of your heritage. Be proud of where you are from. And be proud of the way God made you.
I'm from Sparta, North Carolina, none could have put it into words how it feels to be a southerner any better than Tom did. Live in Ohio now but this song ALWAYS takes me back home. God I miss this man!
I am so shaken over this. I can't seem to get over that he's gone. I'm from Texas and I understand what this song is all about. Tom, I am so sad that you are gone from us. I'm crying over this and it's been 4 days.
Boy I was young and having fun at this one. he taped for 2 days and I was at one. I remember during this song when it was quiet after he sang orange groves i yelled (sorry tom) couldn't help myself. I remember hearing it on the album but not video when it came out. those were good times. great show!
I have been listening to Tom since the beginning and to this day this song still puts a lump in my throat. From a fellow Sunshine State native, everything Tom says is true. Everything we do in the deep south is done with a southern accent.
This is that beautiful, bitter sweet, cryin song, my dad would love this song, I can see him listening to this song right now, that is how powerful this song is to me. The first time I really heard this song, tears came streaming down my face. Love, love, love.
to jusbow567 all you have to do is get the southern accent cd, i think, I still have the cassette that I listen to, when my mind needs it. I remember when this came out and I remember the orange groves froze that year. Welcome to my home,I grew up and was born here, left a time or two but always come home and I will die here
Kinda ironic I love this song & yet I'm Yankee*but my Momma s from Florida😂 miss this Man and think often of how we are no longer going to hear this wonderful voice with the southern accent ever again! Breaks my heart💔R.I.P my favorite all time great entertainer*
Thresa Larson Bless you Hon. This made me cry. My oldest son always tells me when we talk how much he misses hearing his mama’s Southern accent. He loves just hearing me talk.
Shame this has never been released on DVD only video. They were at their height of success after this album but only.maintained existence after this with occasional hits.
I think you meant to say 1985 it was probably a typo on your part Tom is singing this in 1985 at The Wiltern Theater in LA! then Tire show is here on UA-cam and back in the day the entire concert was filmed and released under the name pack up the plantation. What's a little confusing is that originally there was a double album called pack up the plantation that didn't include every song from this concert for some reason included certain ones left out others and then added other songs that Tom perform during the Southern Accents to her as well as songs from other albums are those that hadn't been added to albums yet that had a southern thing. I've noticed that on Amazon and eBay there's a pack up the plantation album but it's only a single LP and not a double LP as it had been once upon a time. That is odd. And a few months ago there were only a few and they were all used VHS tapes of the show at The Wiltern Theater which came out back in 1985 the entire show was on VHS tape and they've never put it on a DVD for some reason! Many of us keep hoping that that will come to be!
Marie Blair the irony is I never lived there, Long Island was home at the time, but I've been in the south for so long, it's seeped in and I've soaked it up
Caught him live once. He asked the record execs in the choice seats to give them up for the real fans. This was at Poplar Creek. His opening was one I won't forget.
There will never be another artist to replace this man.
one of a kind
Simply one of the very best songs ever written on the North American Continent- yeah that includes you Neil ! Glorious, personal, eternal.

isn't Neil Young Canadian tho
ugliest man in rock n roll....
So hauntingly beautiful. This is Tom's true masterpiece. I'm bawling now.
Carry him and his music onward...that's what he'd want us to do. Make one tear with a smile, he'd like that too.
Arguably the most beautiful song he ever wrote.
Written by a native Southerner, sung by a native Southerner. He understands. Also listen to Rebels. He wasn't worrying about p.c.,just truth. Thank God for my Southern accent and thank God for allowing me to be born in the South.
Great track, great performer.....greetings from Scotland....we too, shall rise again, brother....👍🏴

It is. It's a sacred song about where we all come from and it's endearing that we all have that- and should never forget it. Share it!
We all come from a community and a culture, and we all have memories we bind to the place we are from. Thank you Tom for reminding us that.
I was born in '83 in Newfoundland Canada. I grew up listening to this music when my oldest brother played Tom Petty tapes :-) It's not only Americans that enjoyed Tom's music!
I'm from Toronto; wherever there is real music you'll find Tom and his gang or the memory of it all, and the people will listen to it always.

Have you ever met Tom in Gainesville? It would be good to hear stories of someone who got to know him in his ordinary live
RIP Dear Tom Petty an American Boy.
Tom Petty a Florida Boy.....

Beautiful song, and heaven is just a bit sweeter now with Petty there with loves ones.
Tom interprets with 360 degrees feeling the Southern experience. God bless you Tom.

Southern Accents came out in 1995. It was released remastered on CD in 1990.
