  • Sanjeev Sanyal - an economist and writer in conversation with Hindol Sengupta on what it is to be a Hindu in the 21st century.
Who is a Hindu? What does he believe or can he be an unbeliever and still be a Hindu? Why is Hinduism so open to everything and yet driven the same goal to adapt and accommodate everything? What does a Hindu seek? While addressing these questions Hindol Sengupta talks about the modern Hindus and the societies they are living in.

Hindu is a geographical term. It is a name given by the Middle Easterners to the denizens of the land that lies to the East of the river Sindh. Religion as defined in terms of Abrahamic traditions does not apply here. The whole focus is about liberation from cycles of birth and death. For this one has to seek a path (ayana) and guidance. Gods are not the same as considered in the Abrahamic systems. Here Gods are representation of various types of forces, energies and consciousness levels. They can be used in the form of icons, or geometric shapes or in the form of sounds or a combination of all of them, as a means towards stabilizing the body and mind and achieve one pointed focus. Guru is the most important axis of this. A Guru is someone who has experienced dimensions beyond the senses or has achieved absolute mastery of any field. One seeks guidance from a guru and reveres the guru. Be it spiritual or vocational or art, the system of education is the same - to be personally taught by an accomplished guru. There are many pathways based on one's nature, inclinations and mental condition. One will automatically gravitate towards a path that suits his nature. If one achieves advancement in the path, he reaches higher level of wisdom where he will know how to take the right action under a given set of conditions. This will always be the correct one and will not result in karma. If karma is not a result of a right choice, then it becomes kriya. This is the path of Dharma where codes and procedures are not written down for reference, but one has to know through the process of learning and gaining higher level of wisdom. Those who talk of Hinduism have no idea what they are talking about.

Hindu is neither a religion nor any 'ism'. Sanatan Dharma is practiced and followed by people of this region since time immemorial. Hindu is an identity for people of Hindustan which again the term "Hindu' was given by outsiders and not by the natives of "Bharat-Varsh" after king Bharat established the first Democratic nation in the human history.

Let us agree that what was originally Sanatan Dharma is now called Hinduism. Hindus have been denied their religious rights by the constitution (take the Hindu Endowments Acts for example) if you say that Hinduism is not a religion it just helps the other side. Hinduism is a religion but contains within itself not one but many 'isms'

these people like 'Manjaree Bhatt' don't listen what video is all about, they just keep chanting "word Hindu" came from outside, without and research, these people heir something from anywhere and starts chanting same thing again n again without any seance.
Here Sanjeev clearly talked about Axiom of religion, and Axiom of Hinduism is Nasadiya Suktam, which is very accurate, around these axiom various Sampradya are evolved for example, Shav, Shakti, Vashnav, Ganpatya, Charvakas etc, and these all Sampradya are correlated. SO HINDUISM IS A RELIGION.
Coming to the word Hindu, it is not given by some outsiders, it is Bharatiya word.
      आसिंदो सिंधु पर्यन्तं यस्याभारतः भूमिकाः
      मातृभूः पितृभूचेवा सह वै हिंदूरितिस्मृताः
these verses are from Padma Puran.
Meaning: Whoever considers the land of Bharatha Bhoomi between Saptha Sindhu and the Indian Ocean as his motherland and fatherland is known as Hindu. Hence for all Indians this is Punya Bhoomi (Holy land)
      RigVed Barahaspathya Agyam
      हिमालयं समारभ्य यवादिन्दु सरोवरम |
      थम देवनिर्मितं दसम हिंदुस्थानम प्रचक्षति ||
The holy land, surrounded by Himalayas in the North and the Indian ocean in the south, created by the Gods themselves is called Hindustan
Various shlokas are there in which word Hindu clearly came like Kalpadrumya, in Merutantra (Shav), Madhav Digvijya,
and these texts are much much older then 700BCE,
In Rigved one King name is also mentioned as VivaHindu, who donated 46000 Cows
we all know Vedas composed around 5000BCE.
SO STOP FOOLING YOURSELVES BY SAYING WORD HINDU CAME FROM OUTSIDE, ATLEAST OPEN SOME HINDU TEXT AND READ IT,

Sanatan dharma is the basis of living in Bharat . This dharma is inclusive of everything and every creature . Human being is most evolved state of creation which have the ability to raise to higher state of awareness .This thought is included in all Vedas and in Upnishad too. Arth, Dharm , Kaam , Moksha was the pillars of living. For Moksha, the ultimate desire of human life, our fore father's meditated for long and most of them became saints after awakening the dormant divine energy within. The divine energy is the divine mother within and always help the child to ascend in life to higher state of awareness. This state is state is Atma gyaan. Every body is divine creation and thus all are eligible to this Gyaan.
In modern time this is possible to awaken the divine energy within by grace of divine through Sahaja yoga (Www.sahajayoga.org.in)

12:33 We have not given up writing Upanishads or Dharmashastras. Hindus consider the word of their Guru as Shastra. Guru's instruction is equal to the Veda. So many Self-Realized Masters have graced our land. Their writings, discourses, guidance, hymns (composed by them) have added to the vast body of Hindu literature, only that the language is not Sanskrit alone. Most of the new additions to literature are in modern languages - e.g. Hindi, Awadhi, Marathi, Tamil, even English.
So, Hindu spiritual/religious literature continues to grow even today.

We do recognize the Absolute but note that someone is speculating on this! Also remember the creation hymn comes later. First we have Agnimile Purohitam Yagnasya Devam Ritvijam! What a complete sentence for the beliefs of Hinduism. Believe in the Fire (without/within); the Gurus; the Yoga practices; the Devas; and Mother Nature.

Hinduism to as far i have known, is not a book of thought which is tells you thou shall you do, intact sanjeev sir has made it right, no doubt. But, it is your eternal, most fundamental thought which leads you to the fundamental existence bin you, in which everything else is divine. Its like there is nothing else but divine. And when this happens , everything seems worshippable. It is upon that form of existence within you about you, that leads to what hinduism looks today!

This was just created so that the masses benefit but a sage or a rishi is beyond all this, a true seeker is beyond all this and the sages of this land appreciate truth seekers than dogmatic pundits. Hinduism is essentially against the ignorance created by oneself when one entangles oneself in maya. Take any path Sufi or Yoga, reach the truth. That's Hinduism if you want to put a label on it.

This may be true with members of the same family.
So to reach the pinnacle of TRUTH , multiple lifetimes are needed.
This huge based thought process is what makes HINDUISM.
If others dont understand it and go all out to vanquish this population it is criminal.
Caste was never there till 1860's.
It was all a professional intellectual division

Caste was a way to restrain society from acquiring hegemony over land, trade, martial class, knowledge. But sadly it's practice was corrupted and now should not hold any relevance, whatsoever

Ramayana is a man made story. Tamil poet Kambar hijacked the story of ADAM Alaisalaam & Hawa Alaisalaam (ADAM & Eve) and created Ramayanam in the year 1200 AD.. Rama, Sita and Laxman are Tamils they should be in Thirichi and not in Ayodaya. Ravana the Ramayanam villain never existed in Sri Lanka. He is a fake guy. I have lived in Sri Lanka for 84 years.
SITA is a Sanskrit word which means heart pronunciation: SEETHA - a romantic term for heart. When Kambar said Rama and Sita he meant Rama and his love. You Hindus have gone mad. Your religion is Islam.
ISLAM in Sanskrit language is SANTANA (adverb) comes from : Noun:Santa or Shanta. SALAAM. Adjective: Santi or Shanti. (Remember Shahruq Khan singing Om Shanti! Om Shanti! ) Adverb: Santana. The meaning for ISLAM and SANTANA are the same : "to be in Peace or to be at Peace"
Mahabharata : Arabian Night Tales hijacked is Mahabaratha Epics. Both indulge in wild imaginations. Aladdin travels in a "Flying Carpet" in Mahabaratha it is a "Flying Chariot." In Mahabaratha there are 3 Million Gods . Aladdin has 40 Thieves in the cave. Pandavars say Om! Creem! Creem! Aladdin says Cheem! Sheen! Sheem! Englishman got excited about Gingerly Seeds and said " Open Sesame!"
Lord Buddha was not spared he too was hijacked. Es Kanta was lord Buddha's name and that name became Hindu God " Sri Skanda". If you go to Nepal Museum you will find information on EsKanta ie: On Lord Buddha and not on Sri Skanda. You can try Tanjore Museum. Hindu or Hinduism religion never existed until the British came to India in the 17th Century they coined the words to combat ISLAM in India. Their divide and rule policy.

What a stupid talk. Yes, Bhagavad Geeta is a Smriti text and not a Sruti text, and it's not because Sanjay remembered and spoke it out and not because it's not the original or it duplicate word of God and something like that.
The difference between sruti and smriti is that one refers to being authorless and another having author(s). If you try to classify them as being remembered and direct from God or something like that, then it becomes vague.
This is because, for example, in Mahabharata Sanjay isn't speaking out those words by remembering from his Smritipatal, instead, he is experiencing it directly via his Divyanetra (divine vision), just like Arjun. Bhahavad Geeta is a smiriti text because it is a part of Mahabharata, a smriti text becasuse it is written by an author (Vyasadev), not otherwise. Don't be mistaken. Such mistakes cause all kinds of tensions and cost a lot. Besides, such mistakes are stupidity.

WTF, there is no "medieval" period in the Indian context. He seems like a modern day Deepak Chopra, but cashing in on the Indian history cleanup angle. My gripe is marketing Hinduism as a tradition where anything goes, based on half-baked knowledge and zero personal adhyatmic experience, will be profitable in the short term but damaging to our culture & identity in the long. It is unfortunate that people like him and especially businessmen like Jaggi Vasudev (with yoga) etc. package dharmic ideas with a "modern" spin without sufficiently acknowledging or expressing pride in the source (what is now called "Hindu") tradition.

Don't be stupid Sanjeev, Hinduism is not a religion. And by your definition of religion, even Science seems to be a religion. It's absurd. Don't create your own definition of religion and put Hinduism and apparently science into that category. That's dissapointing.
