"India of the ages is not dead nor has she spoken her last creative word; she lives and has still something to do for herself and the human peoples. And that which must seek now to awake is not an anglicised oriental people, docile pupil of the West and doomed to repeat the cycle of the occident’s success and failure, but still the ancient immemorable Shakti recovering her deepest self, lifting her head higher towards the supreme source of light and strength and turning to discover the complete meaning and a vaster form of her Dharma.”
    Sri Aurobindo

An absolute delight! As a prabashi Bharati/Bengali on the other side of the Atlantic. I couldn't agree more and be more proud of what you have done Abhinav with your collaborations and work. More power to you!

It was a delight to listen to the nuanced conversation. Abhinav's questions were apt and Hindol's responses were well crafted.

The Sanskrit grammar should have been simplified & turned into our national language. Science & mathematics books should have been rapidly translated into it. That is what the French, Germans, Soviets, Israelis, Japanese & Chinese did, to catch up with the Anglosphere, post the Industrial Revolution. India simply lacked this sense of initiative, due to the post-colonial inertial fear.
A lot of Sanskrit vocabulary is found in most Indian (& South East Asian) languages. It is also a generative language, making it easier to grasp (unlike English, which is a hodgepodge of Latin, French & German, with a problematic spelling system).
Instead, here we pursued the industries that helped us comfortably serve the Anglophones, by call-centers, out-sourcing, etc., instead of focusing on mass-manufacturing, which is what helps with attaining self-sufficiency (& which doesn't require mass-scale interactions with the Anglophones in English, thereby removing the English requirement from our education, like the Chinese have).
The brown sahib mentality should never be brought into vogue again. So don't try to rescue it.

A lot has been written about partition of india in western context that is aftermath, bloodshed on punjab border. But very little is known about partition of Bengal. After partition population of Kolkatta doubled overnight. Wealthy bengalis bhadra lok just remained people of lower middle class stature. Wealthy bengali class vanished and impoverished class took birth. This explains roots of Marxism in Bengal.

My two bit regarding vision of Bengalis-Ashutoah Mukherkee VC of Calcutta University got C V Raman tehn posted in Cacutta as a memmber of IA&AS -A TamBram--to resign from the top Civil Service and join Calcutta Univ as Palit Professor of Physics-and that too after 10 years service! He went on to get the Nobel in Science the first India/Asian to do so. This is neve recognised enough-WE HAVE HAD NO INDIAN IN INDIA get a Nobel in the 90 years since. Similarly Sir Tarknath Palit gave a huge endowment to Calcutta Univesity in 1914, amounting to hundrds of Crores in today's value for teaching of Science.

I don't think hindol is completely right about hindutva merely adapting to local regionalities. Hindutva aims subsume local identities. Its primary goal is to create a sense of nationhood amongst hindus.

I just can't agree more with Hindol's analysis. Being a North Calcutta boy myself, I feel the pain of being one of those net outflow citizens. The socio-religio-cultural fabric has really worsened and I only pray Bengal and Bengalis residing there, have the resilience to hold on to that fabric and develop + prosper in future 🙏

The interactions with "European culture" was required only to interface with the European powers, who had attained a favorable position within the World System.
They merely re-shuffled the caste system, with them on top. (In fact, the Brahmins were given reservations in the bureaucracy initially, until Gandhi made the peasants a politically important faction.)
They rationed out knowledge using the IP regime, just like the Brahmins before them (who too created & handed down basic arithmetic to the lower castes, while keeping the astronomy, law, etc., to themselves).
India should ideally de-hyphenate itself from its European past, diminish its importance in its national narrative & build itself with future possibilities in mind.

Excellent conversation! Could anyone tell me why Islam was able to subdue Bengal and Assam areas and have lots more conversions compared to, say, even UP and Bihar? Bengal Sultanate was very successful in establishing a strong footing for Islam in the east which finally led to the creation of an Islamic Bangladesh and a huge festering and burgeoning Muslim population in W Bengal and Assam.

Kolkata was centre and main port of silk rute ( where most of good used to be docked from Malacca and sent onward through silk rout ) , so modern Kolkata may be new but its older than many cities like Mumbai ( newer than even nagar haweli and Goa etc).
Bengal of yesterday includes Bihar, Orissa and Jharkhand( before 1912)... you visit traditional areas in Ranchi, Jamshedpurand even patna and witness.
Present day WB was more like it’s western sisters and bangali of you are talking are Dhaka.
I am from northern bihar and know influences of Calcutta had on everything and how all collapsed ( culture to politics to business and related activities like Jute cultivation processing and marketing also trade routes of Nepal). And impact of trade unions , impact of their strike in early 80s had big impact in our cities. Kishanganj, purnea, araria, Katihar still have Calcutta effect.
Kolkata also declined as it became more Bangladesh than
    Bihar .

I am Bengali from Medinipur. The Bengali culture is always defined as culture of Kolkata during the British era. I think this is a huge insult to people. During the communist era, one good this the communist did that appreciate is that they give power to the ground root people from villages of Bengal. Yes, they destroyed the business in Bengal, introduce the Katmani culture in Bengal, still they give more power to villagers of Bengal.
The result now is BJP, most of their grassroot big leaders from Bengal are outside of Kolkata.
Another thing is, to fight the Muslim democratic change we might need people from Bihar, UP to settle in Bengal. Because after all Bengali culture is a Hindu culture. Bengali Muslim culture is Muslim culture.

Frankly Bangalis over estimate their culture etc. At best It is behind 3 other cultures 1. Marathi 2. Kannada 3. Tamil. Of course Bengalis are top on sucking up to British hence got in-prortionate footage.

Bengal renaissance is fake. They have no social mobility, and is ruled by bhadralok elites. Even UP is more progressive than Bengal. Rural Bangla is shit hole. I was awestruck, when I went to rural Bangla, no industries, I considered my region as backward (vidarbha) presently the part of Maharashtra, but when I went there It's Nothing. Even Nagpur looks better than Kolkata. I saw manual rickshaws in Kolkata. The city is still considered as one of the best city in India which bhadrolok successfully sold to indians. Don't get me wrong, I half Bengali myself, but Bengal, is beyond repair if same policies are continued. I visited 24 parganas it's complete shit hole. I was shocked to see parganas so near to city, I do know Mumbai has dharavi, but dharavi slums produce more than a billion dollar in revenue, which is unheard of slums which is less than 1 sq.km. I thought to go back to my motherland, but it was utter disappointment. I was shocked backward classes Has never been CM in castless Bengal. Forget CM, even their state cabinet is 90% Upper caste. More I read, more I am shocked. I read Ms. Padhopadhya paper about caste politics in bengal, it's quite says about Bengali society.
Time for introspection Bengalis, you are already late.
