You said you finish your boards with poly first. Is there any point to using butter over poly? I'd assume it wouldn't penetrate the wood and just sit on the poly and eventually wash off the first time you clean it.
@@Ben_Grimsley : well, everything turned out like you showed. I have about 9 empty cans left over cause I ordered 45 count 4 oz cans. I also ordered 50 stickers from sticker mule. They are coming in on the 10th. I was surprised at how fast my order came in. It was less than 48 hours! Wow! Somehow I had an happy accident. I ordered 4 bags of beeswax pellet as well as 4 bottles of mineral oil. So, my next order will be enough to use the other 3 bags of beeswax. I can’t believe how easy it is, how fast it went. The only issue I had was the cord for the candle wax pot is only 3 feet long. I need a longer cord! I looked up what the melting point of the beeswax is. Thank goodness I did that. I would have fried my wax! Keeping the temp around 148F works best. Takes about 7 minutes to melt the wax at that point. Thanks again. Super helpful. Super fun!
Hey Ben! I've spent the better half of my morning falling down your rabbit hole of videos, and thoroughly enjoyed every second of it! Lol (needless to say, you've gained a new subscriber 👍) Random question for ya . . . I noticed that beast of a Milwaukee sliding miter saw in the background, which I happen to own the same one myself (had it for well over 20yrs now! 😯). I was wondering what you do for dust collection on it!? As you know the port is an oddball shape, and I've yet to find a vacuum fitting that accommodates it. Any insight you may have is greatly appreciated! Again, love the videos & content . . . keep up the awesome work, brotha!
Hey! Thank you so much for watching a subscribing. Means a ton! Honestly, that is a saw we have on a mobile base so I only use it outside for breaking down large material. If you look up “shop nation” on UA-cam, it is guy who engineers dust ports for miter saws with weird built-in dust ports. He may have something on his website, but I do not own one. Maybe that will help! Thanks again for watching!
Wow! Thanks, so great you thought of such a good idea and that it sells, congrats! Can I ask - is the wood butter suitable to use on other types of wood - as doors, beds, tabletops, desktops, etc.?
Thank you for this video. I went to your links to order the mineral oil and it will only allow me to order 3- 16 ounce bottles at a time. Have you experienced this? Why is this? Also, what info should be put on the labels? Thank you.
Thanks for sharing this video, I would probably just make the butter for myself and maybe include in the items I sell, it looks like everyone is making it and selling it. Is it possible to add a scent to the butter? Like orange or lemon?
Is it hard to clean the wax melter after using it or do you just let it remelt into the new product? Soap and water? Also, does the nozzle get clogged or does it heat up when the wax melter heats up and cleans its self out?
Love your videos - you're to the point, not a ton of fluff like some others. Just wondering if you sell any of your projects on Etsy. You talk about selling "online" - but there isn't anything on your Etsy shop - except for this board butter. Just curious. I'm looking at getting into craft shows... but I like many of your b2b ideas too.
Great video thanks but how do you ship them with out leaking?? I have used these tins and have mad some to have on site at craft fairs to give out with my boards, but I have found if they get to got the re melt and leak do these tins have a seal in the lids??
These tins have not leaked for me. Sometimes, in warmer weather, the wax gets a a little soft, but once it cools down again, it will take it original form
Something doesn't add up in your math. You said it gave you 31tins x 4oz = 124oz total product. But it seems you have around 80oz of product (4 x 16oz mineral oil + around another 16oz beeswax). I either missed something, or these tin containers contain less than 4oz each. If my calculations are correct you pour around 2.6oz board butter in a 4oz tin, which if on purpose, ngl it's quite smart.
@@Ben_Grimsley The other thing I would point out here is that fluid ounces (fl oz) used to measure the mineral oil and weight ounces (oz) used to measure the bees wax are not the same thing and not directly interchangeable. Fluid ounces (fl oz) are used to measure volume, how much space an item takes up; the other type of ounce (oz) is used to measure mass or weight, how heavy something is. Fluid ounces eventually become gallons and Ounces eventually become pounds. The size of the fl oz is based on the oz; a fl oz is based on the amount of water it takes to equal one oz. The denser the fluid the less volume it takes to equal one oz. I’m not trying to be a pedantic dick 😊 I’m just trying to explain why these things might not add up right 😊.
With the low cost of mineral oil and wax i would just include it with whatever product you sell. Add the price into product. You then can say its included for free. Who doesnt like the word free? Or you can do like I do and just give it away, its not a big deal. Its like the $10 off the sticker link, the discount is in the marked up price and appears you are getting it for nothing but you are not. Edit after clicking on the sticker link provided their ads pop up continually 😢
I have done it both ways. What I have noticed is that people like to come back and buy refills. But I love using these as a promotion to sell a cutting board
From experience, I do not use a poly of any kind!! It is great when fresh and in good shape, but it will age and comes off sometimes in larger flakes than you might think. Not good even with food safe products!!
Not true business to not amortize the cost of the wax melter. I also feel you actually spent four times as mush time as you implied!!! I did like your video and information.
I’ve been making soap and candles for a few years before devoting more time to woodworking. I make my own everything now lol
You said you finish your boards with poly first. Is there any point to using butter over poly? I'd assume it wouldn't penetrate the wood and just sit on the poly and eventually wash off the first time you clean it.
Thanks, Ben! Just ordered the supplies and am going to give it a try. Thanks for helping the rest of us by sharing what you've learned.
You are welcome!
Thanks for the info, Ben. I may make a batch to give to friends for Christmas, birthdays, etc.
Awesome! Let me know how it turns out
You put out some great simple videos, thanks for sharing your secrets.
Thank you so much!
Ben! I ordered everything am I’m doing this now. Thanks! You made this process easy

Another great, informative video.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Wow! Thanks, so great you thought of such a good idea and that it sells, congrats!
Can I ask - is the wood butter suitable to use on other types of wood - as doors, beds, tabletops, desktops, etc.?
Yes, it is a great natural, all-purpose finish
@Ben_Grimsley oh, thank you so much for your answer! Wish to you happy and warm Christmas!
I was thinking of wholesaling these to ther crafter. What do you feel would be fair in cost and required minimum quanity? Thank you.

I have never personally tried adding scents, but I think it would be awesome! Let me know how it turns out if you try it!
Have you ever done a slightly scented one before? Like a drop of lemon oil or myrtle? I guess most want neutral for food boards though
Interesting thought. I have never tried that, but it may be worth a shot!
Is it hard to clean the wax melter after using it or do you just let it remelt into the new product? Soap and water? Also, does the nozzle get clogged or does it heat up when the wax melter heats up and cleans its self out?
I just clean it with soap and water and then dry it out. The nozzle can be removed with a crescent wrench, so it is easy to clean as well
@@Ben_Grimsley Thank you, sir. Love your content.
@@Ben_Grimsley Also, what size stickers do you use for the cans? 2 or 3 in?
What is the temp. setting that you use on the wax melter?
great video. What size are the labels for the tin lids?
2.9 inch diameter
@@Ben_Grimsley thanks

Ben, where did you get the wax melt or with spout
There is a link to it in the description of this video. It is awesome!
Good job... You told me what I was doing wrong, my ratio was off!
Glad I could help!

How long do you let it warm up before putting the beads in?
About 30 minutes
I’m pretty sure the mineral oil is measured in “fluid” ounces, not by weight. The 4:1 ratio is exact.
Good call! I need to look into that
Nice. I would not use poly on a cutting board.
I don’t! It is a butcher block clear that finishes similar. I probably should not have compared it to poly in this video. Good call!

I did not fill these up to the top of the tins, so I think that is the difference. Good catch!

I have never had this happen personally, but that is something I will watch for. I have seen people use just mineral oil to finish their boards.
The butcher block oil you use is made especially for these purposes. Putting the butter on top is just an extra layer of protection.
Not true business to not amortize the cost of the wax melter. I also feel you actually spent four times as mush time as you implied!!!

I see the mineral oil is $8.00 on Amazon BUT $3.00 in Target!
Wow! I would just make sure it is food grade. Thanks for watching!
