Man, that hoop mod was classic home grown "get er' done"...
You should start making your own drums out of old shells you found. Maybe even start your own company!
Agree!
But then it might make the drums more expensive because of all the man hours going into making it, possibly making it just as expensive or more expensive then a brand new drum
I would still but it. I know it would be quality.
*buy
Georgia Panfishing but the shell is consistent quality.
Love this early videos, when there was no music in between the working accelerated phases
I just converted a 10"×7" rack tom to a snare. Got the throw off mechanism from a 14" snare. bought a snare side hoop so it would look professional. cut my own beds with a file and sandpaper. this nice snare turned out professional looking and matches the rest of my kit. sounds awesome. The
remaining matching 14" snare shell I then converted it to a subkick. I used those Pearl silent window screen heads to cover the speaker. It too looks professional.
Thanks for showing us a bit of innovation in shallowing up a snare drum from an old tom; double-ended one-piece lugs were obviously needed here. I'd simplify it further and handle the snare conversion at the tom's original depth - only the snare bed need be routed out, and the strainers retrofitted, that way. Remo manufactures a fairly large number of reso diameters; the 12x7 snare project, for instance, would be a good candidate for the BA-0112-00 batter and SA-0112-00 3-mil reso with most 11"-long snare units.
Great video. I love the time lapse stuff, especially the filing and hammering. Would like to hear the drum by itself though, just some strokes and rolls
wow that sound was great !
well done :)
Very smart engineering
The alternating lug orientation is very cool and unique looking
Also the snare latch that sticks out so much, haha very cool.
+rdavidr You are my hero!
I have an old drum set with four toms, floor tom and bassdrum.
I've seen all your renovation videos. There are so many ideas what can I do with my drum kit to make it great again :D
Thanks very much! Don't stop making these videos, you are the best!
I though you'd make that snare as deep as the tom was.
I am doing a twelve inch tom to snare conversion tomorrow ,I am leaving it the way it is ,I am not cutting mine short . This was not one of Dave's better videos.take care .
@@markdemell3717 how'd that work man? I'm very curious.
I expected this to be way worse of a project, but I was surprised! Good job on this.
You weren't joking about the audio quality
Was so funny to listen the extremely fast use of the tools jajajajaja. Well done, nothing better than doit by your self!
plus 1 subscriber for this one! I've seen a handful of your videos now and I'm smitten with your sense of adventure when it comes to these instruments! I'm seriously motivated to start tinkering with my drum kit!
wow sounds WAY better than i would have expected, nice work sounds crisp.
the snare looks really awesome man !! nice job ! i wish i could do all this things too xD i love your videos, keep uploading ;))
One of the best projects I've seen. Yeah man!
Holy grail... That snare was cool I luv it
Love the fast forward sounds! Great project...
The old luan mahogany shells used to be quite thick and were good for snare shells cut from toms.
great project, brother, & nice solution for the strainer problem. drum sounds crisp from what i could hear.
Did you use twice as many single-sided lugs rather than half as many double-sided lugs because that's all you had available?
I was wondering the same thing, only thing I could think is maybe there were non to fit the holes, but that seems unlikely 🤔. It also would’ve solved the problem he had of not being able to fit the snare holder (what’s it called?) between the lugs
I’m wondering if I should on a poplar drum or if it’s a waste of time lol
That is bad ass!! Nice job, brother!!
7:21 I couldn't stop laughing I'm sorry
you are one of my top 10 favorite persons in the world
I thought you would have pulled out a dremel tool to cut that opening on the rim, I have to say I admire guy's like you because you aren't afraid to take a chance and try something. I hate messing things up because it cost's me extra money I can't spend so I don't try things, your video's kind of amp me up to try and build something or mod something maybe i'll get to that extra 12in tom I have and do some kind of a stain job.
Dude,You work extremely fast!!!!
Man I want that snare drum right there lol
WOW... it looks good n it even sounds amazing nice work sir
its tomorrow? so does that mean its tomorrow's tomorrow!? It's never ending! this video is still going! lol 1:32
I love your channel! its basically Tool Time.... bit with drums!! haha keep it going man!!!
I love all the sped up tool sounds lol
Just a tip. When removing paint, using scrapers is really fast. You just have to sand to prepare the surface for finishing.
you have come a long way
This Was The first Video I Heard Without The Background Music During Cutting the Wood, drilling Etc Etc...
@AfrO Acoustic - Second one for me! I was watching the 'Painting the $20 Set's floor tom' video a bit earlier tonight and remarked that something was missing :-))
I weirdly love how the audio sounds at the end. It’s like the 60’s compressed sorta drum sound.
Nothing like working in 3D and then finding something unforseen. Now I work up at least one prototype. For this project, a ring made from a cardboard box would have sufficed. One last tidbit. Put the finish on first and drill after.
My first drum project was a TAMA tom conversion. The lugs were not offset which made it easier.
it sounds pretty cool !
great job dude. love the videos. and awesome workshop u got there. keep it up!!!!
enjoyed watching this!
Do you still have this drum, bro?
It would be grade if you could make a new sound demo for it!
So satisfying
Dude thats sick!
That was Fucking epic... I have a Tama Rockstar DX and since I saw that you removed the paint from the "snare", I think I'll do the same with my drumset and use the same thing you used to give it the same finish, awesome!
Nice job!! The drum looks beautiful. Have you considered using the second half of the tom to make a second snare? Im sure you could get a good price by selling one!
I thought about it, but then id have to find hardware to match the existing holes, and by the time id buy everything for it id be in the hole pretty deep. I also cut up the cut off to make a sanding block to make sanding the inside easier haha. My intention was to sell this one after month or so just cause i never use 2 snares. I have an idea for the rest of the drum tho and will probably make a video in the near future
I know you’re the expert, but it seems like you should’ve gotten lugs that fit the already drilled holes from the previous one that we’re double sided, if possible, so you wouldn’t have to drill new ones and that way wouldn’t have offset logs either
that was awesome
great work and drumming!
i like this idea
good job man👍 sounds good to me
The hi hats blow out the mic
Yeah fucking awesome! Love your videos!
Do you sell any of the things you make? You're creative man!!
You should definitely start a business in which people bring in their old busted drums and you fix them up into something else, like converting a Tom to a snare here. I would pay for that
I did this with a 13” Tom and made it into a 13”x3” snare and I couldn’t be bothered buying new hoops so I drilled holes through them so I could use snare wires
So, really good sound!
Can you try to do homemade concert tom (without bottom head)? It will be Very interesting to listen the sound
Like to hear the snare drum on it's own, just a snare drum demo
This is freakin cool :-
Kinda’ therapeutic watching the high speed video😂
How does the cost compare, to buying a comparable snare.?
Man, I own a stave shell that needs some fixing to do. I wish I could find someone to do the job. The shell is 5"x13" and I want to reduce it to 4"x13". The thing is that it isn't completely flat outside. It needs sanding. It will also need the 45° bearing edges and snare beds. And new holes to upgrade from 6 to 8 lugs.
Great video! Very interesting the way you set up the lugs and the strainer. I've been thinking about trying to take an old bass drum and trying to make a stand for it so I can mount it to the side of my kit. So you could play it with your sticks kind of as a 2nd or 3rd floor Tom, I've seen people do it but not without racks. Kind of like you did with making the Pancake/Gong drum, except trying I'm trying to figure out how to mount it for more support haha
ive done it with a regular tom mount in a cymbal stand (i have pearl tom arms) and had the stands feet extended all the way. hope this helps.
new sub
create a jingle head pack. snare head with jingles attached to the actual head, and do that to the rest of your tom head and hear what it sounds like? just an idea..
Absolutely Awsome vid hahha great job! Can I ask what the other snare was this was at the end of the vid?
jhix66able sonor force 3007 or sonor black mamba. theyre the same drum, just different badges
Hey, nice work :) But I have got a question. What mashine do you use at 01:56? Do you have a product link?
its called a router. here the one I used. I would recommend getting a bigger one then making or buying a router table. amzn.to/2P4N36i
Would you mind telling me what you used to cut the new bearing edge on the trimmed side?
great job. :)
Did you route out snare beds? Didn't see that anywhere! :P
Cool project!
I just sanded them by hand. I didn't record it for whatever reason, but they're there!
hello bud nice video keep up the good wark. what is the name of the machine you use on 1:53 to make the snare serfise smaler.
Pavlos Soultoukis thats a router
before you did the coats of polyurethane, did you do a light sand of the stain?
+Will Tomlin yep
What lugs/lug housings are on the drum? I have a project snare that has the same lugs but in gold already installed. However, some of the lugs broke off and I need to find new ones but I can’t find them anywhere! Please help thanks!
very nice
I didn't see a snare bed. Did you put one in it?
Did you ever sell it? Sounds AMAZING by the way
Bird_is_the_nerd Thanks! but nope, still have it!
Dude, where do you buy the drum hardware, tensión rods, etc.?
are you using a chamfer bit in that trim router to cut the bearing edge?
+Travis Gaines yeah I used a 45 degree chamfer bit on the inside, then a round over on the outside even though I didnt show it.
Sounds great man! What size drill bit did you use for drilling into the drum?
+Adam MacEachran ehhh I dont remember, probably 1/4" though. I just matched it with the existing lug holes.
Are there any tools you don't have?
We need a snare that's the size and length of a floor tom, but still a snare. I wonder what that'd sound like
Tama duo snare
Just ask the 80's. Deep, deep snares were fairly common. Some of them were known as colosseum or arena snares
was this before the 20$ drumset??
why did u use 2 snare baskets instead of 1?
You should put a ring on the batter head
What if you have a 5 lug 13x10 tom? Do you add a lug or keep it as is?
This would be something I would buy! U planning on selling it cus I might get it depending on price.
Harry Pelling na Im keeping it!
Did you sand down some snare beds or leave the bearing edge straight?
+Kandem I sanded them, didnt film it for whatever reason
+rdavidr thanks for the fast reply. it sounds pretty darn good!
How can I do this to my floor Tom without cutting it down or is it possible to get a company or drum shop to convert it for me
Treymon WillIams Find a instrument repair shop and they can most likely help you out
hey, whats the tool you used to cut the bearing edge?
Which grade of sanding paper did you use between coats?
+mkl757 I dont remember exactly, but it was probably 200 grit. and before the final coat I sanded up to 600 grit
rdavidr, what powertool did you use to cut the bearing edges? What's it called?
Router
Hi David! What kind of machine is that in 1.56"??? Thank you
+Captain tzek router
What was that other snare in the video? (main snare)
5:05 CLOSE YOUR EYES, it sounded like someone hacking
What snare side head are you using for this?
+Kyle Goodman hazy 300
are u willing to sell this snare??
Classic rdavidr! The good old days! A quick and sloppily put together drum, recorded poorly, and played badly. But hey, um , yeah it's a thing so um, like and subscribe!
Nice
Sounds like the st anger era snare a bit
do a OCDP Vented style snare drum!!! xD
