Great video, I just bought a second gen Mini! Tip: Sometimes online when you are looking for a Mini, the photos are too low resolution to read the year it was made. If it has the capacity written on the back, it's a second gen. If it's not written on the back, it's a first gen. The capacity is much easier to see, so even in a low resolution photo you can tell if it has the capacity written or not.
The iPod Mini 2G is literally the greatest iPod ever. Small, light, and they used the incredible IBM Microdrive which at the time implied Apple MIGHT have been making them AT A LOSS. Rumors suggested photographers were picking them up on sale to get the 4GB Microdrives cheaper than they were sold individually. Also, the drive adapter pops off the board too, so just pull it off (gently) rather than trying to do what you did of wiggling the Microdrive out.
More than likely they got a deal with IBM, who early in the computer scene had a virtual monopoly on those sorts of bits and bobs because of patenting and shit

I love my Mini. Sounds great and feels the best to hold out of all of my iPods. Something about that round casing, it just feels like it was made to be held.
Hi Dankpods, After watching your channel I thought I'd do it myself. I took a risk and modded my 30gb 5.5gen ipod and put 448gb in it (which for some reason is 416gb in apple maths) . My library is only 18,200 tracks but 13,500 of them are large ALAC files from my CD collection so that's about 350gb, the rest are mp3s but everything has artwork. My ipod could cope with all 350gb of my alac files but started having trouble with all the mp3s as well and it didn't like showing album artwork unless it was rebooted after syncing. It maxed out at around 17,000 tracks with a few issues. So I wondered if I could make it all work perfectly. Luckily I managed to find a cheap 80gb 5.5gen, I took the back cover and front cover off my 30gb (I thought I'd use my front cover as I know where that's been), got a new battery and combined it all together. So now I have a monster slimline 448gb 5.5gen ipod that works like a dream, it'll even play the few old music videos I have and it has 30gb of space left over. And yes it shuffles. Thanks for the inspiration.
Honestly, the Minis are probably my favorite. Best compromise between the Nano and the full-size bois with none of the drawbacks, like the Nanos battery/screen issues over time. When you consider the modding potential, it's amazing how cheap they are to find. Maybe I'm biased because my first iPod back in ye olden days was a first gen puke green Mini.
I owned a 5.5 gen iPod, but the screen died and I gave it to a friend like 10+ years ago. The last MP3 player I used was my Zune HD. At the end, I was just using it for podcasts, which I started doing on my phone so I stopped carrying the Zune. That was 5+ years ago. Then a friend introduced me to your channel for headphones, I found this and the other iPod videos and... ended up going to Ebay, buying a set of busted iPod Minis (which they sadly aren't giving away anymore), a new battery, the iFlash SD to CF adapter, and a new microSD card. I am now the proud owner of a 256GB iPod mini loaded with all my music in lossless and I still have 90GB left over. So I said all that to say... Thanks for inspiring me to do a quick, easy DIY and be able to enjoy the results.
1st/2nd iPod gen can actually go to 40GB with a 4th Gen “04” HDD... I’ve done a video on that, I also just finished a 128GB 3rd Gen (it’s a pain to setup and use but works) and the 4th gen can go up to 256GB with no issues... I agree though that the Mini is the best, my daily is a 128GB I’ve had since 2013 and I’m getting ready to upgrade it to 256GB myself
I love how when Hugh Jefferys opened some of these later on he was very critical of the design and how difficult it is to open, and Mr. Pods here is just like 'this is so fun you guys' like he's just having a fun time
This channel has legit made me buy a 7th gen classic. But I have been having trouble downloading songs on it. Would love a vid on that. I love you dank.
I can say I’ve been subbed since you were at 3k. But that was like 6 hours ago or something. Congrats man! Also hear you talking about CD quality. I currently use a FiiO to play my FLAC collection on the go. Would love a video talking about FLAC and ALAC options with iPods on Rockbox and official firmware.
So I began modding these and here are my tips I’ve found 1) buy iFixit batteries, knockoffs can absolutely suck!!! 2) be careful removing top bezel, and moving motherboard/headphone jack. If the contacts unseat you’ll put together an iPod with no sound. 3) internals can be difficult to remove if battery is swollen, “it will fight you” 4) when re-adhering the bottom bezel, the tabs can easily break and prevent flush seat. Just remove and reapply 5) I use contact cement and q-tips for top/bot bezels, works like a charm.
Monochrome 4th gen. is one of my favorite electronics of all time. Also love the silent buttons and sound quality of the 3rd gen. and the battery life of the 5th gen. Threw a 128GB microSD in the 4th and 5th and use these 3 in combination throughout the week. Looking forward to getting a CF card in the 4th gen. (for that sweet 10% battery improvement, hah) and the HDD out of the 3rd gen. in the future. I've only got about 7600 songs at 75% ALAC, 155GB so all the good ones fit on 128GB just fine. Good times. Love these old things and these videos.
I actually got a 1st gen blue Pod mini with a dead hdd for free and I thanks to your video I opened it myself and I put a 64gb cf card, now it's my daily MP3 player with almost 3000 songs on it! I love these old minis and I even got a compliment from another iPod fan in public! I also have a silver 2nd gen but it has the go 4bg hard drive (maybe upgrading it at some point)! thanks to your awesome channel there's now an iPod mini that lives again!
With the mini it seems like aside from plastic cases you can only get refurbished cases nowadays Also with the battery you may want to be careful when selecting replacement batteries, as a few have their wires placed in such a way that they push on the headphone jack board, causing it to come loose over time (I've had to open my mini half a dozen times because of this, I ended up having to tear off the stuff the manufacturer wrapped the battery cell in to re-wrap it with electrical tape so that I could actually have enough exposed cable to route it properly)
Idk if mr dankpods will see this comment but I've watched your content since 2019 and I have finally invested into two ipod minis, one for use and another for collecting as it is in perfect condition with its original box and accessories. I don't regret it one little bit! These nuggets hold up really well considering the age on them and now I've realised how fun the clickwheel iPods are! (I had only owned ipod touches prior).
I'm so glad I discovered you. Thanks to you I just ordered a 6th gen classic off eBay.
I think a second channel called dankbricks where you review lego from 2010 2009 ect would be a good idea
2:58 you forgot to blur that song 😂
Dank pods: *Don’t ask me how I know this*

@@DankPods use my own spell against me, katt ?
I have one of these as my dialy music players I’ve had it for about 7 years!
Also that montage of the bluetooth iPod’s life killed me 🤣🤣🤣
High Tech With Grumpo me too 🤣🤣🤣
1st/2nd iPod gen can actually go to 40GB with a 4th Gen “04” HDD...
What are the exact adapters you use for 4th gen? None of the things I've seen in these videos have worked.
Iflash has an adapter to convert Zif to the pins then you can just use the iflash boards... check out the 3rd gen videos ;)
8:43 at least it is Shrek coloured ehh
The ShrekPod Mini
I love how when Hugh Jefferys opened some of these later on he was very critical of the design and how difficult it is to open, and Mr. Pods here is just like 'this is so fun you guys' like he's just having a fun time
This channel has legit made me buy a 7th gen classic. But I have been having trouble downloading songs on it. Would love a vid on that. I love you dank.
We have finally seen the green iPad being used! The prophecy was true!
Le Lluc he used it once before
He used it in the wireless charger video
He used it before
I have a suspicion that ipod mini prices are going to surge soon
70k songs? Haha how do you know 70k songs? I don’t think I can even name 1000!
50k vs 30k??? Where are you all even finding all this music??
Musician for a living so music is my life, been gathering for a long time!
DankPods are you really??? Anything I’ve heard? And also, have you written 50k songs or something? 🤣🤣 that would be super impressive
Name a 1000? Dang mate, I dont think I can even name 20 tbh
Solidcancer07 🤣🤣🤣 omg same now I wanna try
D Emery after seeing his iPod mini with a aussie guy whos screams at nuggets: 👁👄👁

Would love a flac / alac / rockbox vid too!
The cheap SD to CF adapter seem to work perfectly on the original firmware but it doesn't work with custom firmware like rockbox
ayyy he showed the ipod mini some love YAY
also my 08 iMac fell on me while typing this it "was" on my bed x3
Thank you for this one! I'm in the middle of doing one now thanks to this video and channel!
So I began modding these and here are my tips I’ve found
1) buy iFixit batteries, knockoffs can absolutely suck!!!
2) be careful removing top bezel, and moving motherboard/headphone jack. If the contacts unseat you’ll put together an iPod with no sound.
3) internals can be difficult to remove if battery is swollen, “it will fight you”
4) when re-adhering the bottom bezel, the tabs can easily break and prevent flush seat. Just remove and reapply
5) I use contact cement and q-tips for top/bot bezels, works like a charm.
Great, I'm getting home late. THE ONE TIME I NEED TO LOOK AT MY IPOD MINI MORE THAN I NEED TO BREATHE!
WHAT
4 am filming?
i'm in
I actually got a 1st gen blue Pod mini with a dead hdd for free and I thanks to your video I opened it myself and I put a 64gb cf card, now it's my daily MP3 player with almost 3000 songs on it! I love these old minis and I even got a compliment from another iPod fan in public! I also have a silver 2nd gen but it has the go 4bg hard drive (maybe upgrading it at some point)! thanks to your awesome channel there's now an iPod mini that lives again!
With the mini it seems like aside from plastic cases you can only get refurbished cases nowadays
Also with the battery you may want to be careful when selecting replacement batteries, as a few have their wires placed in such a way that they push on the headphone jack board, causing it to come loose over time (I've had to open my mini half a dozen times because of this, I ended up having to tear off the stuff the manufacturer wrapped the battery cell in to re-wrap it with electrical tape so that I could actually have enough exposed cable to route it properly)
Omg I have one of those old ipods with die battery, now I'm convinced I'll fix it and make it better
I will never be modifying an ipod myself but I absolutely love your videos.
3:17 you be listenin to what on that touch

This didn't age well
Idk if mr dankpods will see this comment but I've watched your content since 2019 and I have finally invested into two ipod minis, one for use and another for collecting as it is in perfect condition with its original box and accessories. I don't regret it one little bit! These nuggets hold up really well considering the age on them and now I've realised how fun the clickwheel iPods are! (I had only owned ipod touches prior). Thanks mate for the content its always a blast to watch :)
