    1:53 - Models older than the 5.5th gen also had Wolfson DACs. When buying iPods, beware of listings where the seller goes out of the way to mention the DAC because it's become an easy way for them to unreasonably mark up prices. The music file and headphones you use play a much bigger part in the audio quality anyway.

    I finally got an iPod after watching a Dankpods video. I did the same internal mods that you did, but didn't replace the shell. That thing was a tank, and if it weren't for a bad cable ruining the 32 pin connector, it would still be my daily music device. Since then, I've modded Minis, 4th and 6th gen classics.

  • @nostalgiatrip1
    @nostalgiatrip1 5 місяців тому +15

    I rock a iPod 5.5 I modded as well. What I do recommend for anyone wanting to try this is to try to find the 80GB versions of this model because it does have more RAM than the 30GB, it is also the "thicker" version that Denki ended up making which the shell replacement.

    • @richeyrich2203
      @richeyrich2203 3 місяці тому +1

      Does the 6th and 7 gen have even more ram respectively?

    • @nostalgiatrip1
      @nostalgiatrip1 3 місяці тому

      @@richeyrich2203 Yes they do but, but there is some major differences, conditions, and "drawbacks". The first is that 6th and 7th gen doesn't use the Wolfson DAC which regarded as the "Best Sounding". And second is that there is some weird "updates" and conditions with them, they use a different OS and UI that is "updated" to have some of the iPod touch and iPhones like showing a clock when the screen is dimming, you get Cover flow which is meh and laggy on the iPod and overall is a little more cumbersome. Also the 6th Gen had a weird storage limit of 128GB even when you Flash upgrade, when the 7th doesn't. They are also harder to open and easier to damage then the 5.5 gens due to the aluminum covers but possible. So my recommendation is if you only want a music player and want the best quality get a 5.5 Gen 80gb upgrade to 256 with flash and you're good. But you want an ultimate iPod with a ton up to a TB of storage for both your music and movie libraries, and also willing to deal with the metal case to mod, then get a 160GB slim 7th Gen.

    I also had/have a 5.5, the main issue with using one of these in 2023 is that there is kind of a limit on how many songs you can have on it. Even if you beef up the storage you cant do anything about the RAM, when you have too many songs the low RAM causes it to crash and skip all the time. If you dont have many songs or dont need them all on the iPod all the time then they do still sound great.

    I have an iPod Video 30GB from 2005. I loved it back then! I think that the iPod was fundamental in my youth since I was really listening to tons of music at that time.
    It still sort of works. The battery is a bit swollen, the headphone jack doesn't work, and it is pretty beat up. But I also have, from that same era, a Bose iPod dock speaker set. It charges my iPod and plays music. So my I just have to dock my iPod and I can just play music on it.
    So I still use my iPod to play music in my room every now and then. You can still sync your iPod with Apple Music in a Mac. Finding the cable is a bit more difficult, though

    Actually the old Rockbox version 3.15 you used in combination with the iFlash could be the root cause of the freezing issues and crashes you encountered.
    I´d always recommend to use the daily builds.
    There has been so much going on since 2019, also improving the compatibility with iFlash.
    It´s still not perfect, as rockbox simply expects a native IDE hard drive, since this is what the driver was written for.
    However, there is one kind of flash storage that will work flawlessly and that is a compact flash card.
    It´s a native IDE device and while it doesn´t offer extreme sequential speeds like modern SSD´s, it´s still a heck of a lot faster and more responsive than any HDD and is also able to outperform many modern SD cards.
    So if you ever want to revisit your iPod, from time to time a photographer tosses out a bunch of old compact flash cards for cheap.
    You may grab a 128gb one for example.

    • @RAndrewNeal
      @RAndrewNeal 5 місяців тому

      I'll have to look at updating mine, then. The workaround is to manage files while booted into the stock firmware, and switch to Rockbox when finished. This doesn't solve the occasional freezes and crashes though. But they're infrequent enough for me that they usually aren't more than a minor nuisance.

    I refurbished my iPod classic 7th gen I actually used in highschool just like this. Its now purple and black, has 1tb of storage, and a huge battery. Next thing i want to try is adding the bluetooth mod to it. I use it every day again, and its super nostalgic. I installed Rockbox, but hardly ever use that, since you can still boot into the original OS. Its just a little to Janky for me to want to daily drive. Its a relatively easy process, and its awesome to be able to customize the look of your iPod to look the way it should have when we got them back in the day.

    In the 2000s I graduated college, went through grad school, and was a young professional. So the first MP3 player I got was a Creative Labs that was pretty good. The interface wasn't quite as well as the original iPads when it came to the touch dial. My roommate actually found a fully functional iPad (classic) on the side of a road. But as far as quality line out with headphones, they were all good. Also I would say with this comment about what DAC chips are present with a player: sometimes there might be something with EQ or DSP...but especially brand of DAC chip means nothing. I've had high end components with DAC chips deemed bright sounding, and their analog output pretty muddy sounding.

    I’m thinking about getting another iPod as I want a dedicated device for my music and podcasts. I like having my phone, but it gets to be overwhelming. I miss the early 2000s where each device was separated.

    I had an iPod classic for 11 years as my daily companion 💫💕 … 90 gb of music, I had a playlist that could last me for dayssss without a repeat song!! I loved it soo much but eventually one of the ear stopped working.. shoving a bit of a foil in the audio jack did do the job but then it wasn’t the same for me.. and now we just stream..

    I did the exact same thing with my 5.5, minus the faceplate and click wheel swap. To the T. I use it all the time; I like to have my music library in a dedicated device, made just for music.

    Definitely gonna use it more now that I have it fixed up, though I really need to get a better pair of headphones for it (Would do KSC75s since they're super compact but I need to have something that's closed-back)

    I had the 4th gen nano. It was the only apple device I have ever bought brand new. In this day and age; I wouldn't bother with a dedicated music player. I have Spotify and a unlimited data plan on my phone. I can listen to all my favorite tunes while on the go. The iPod saved the music industry by allowing you to take your whole CD collection around with you in your pocket. Next iteration of that was the streaming services like Pandora and Spotify.

    I was never able to afford an iPod. I was content with my USB flash-drive style player from Phillips or JVC, can't remember. I only ever had cheap headphones, so I didn't know "good sound." It's neat to see what people are doing with iPods today.

    It’s strange that I seem so much non-dankpods-iPod-content recently.
    I like it!
    Back in the day, I always wanted an iPod, but I was poor, so I only had one of those terrible USB-Stick-MP3-players that used an AAA battery and had this tiny two-way-joystick.
    Then after a hand-me-down nano, around 10 years ago I finally got what I wanted back in the day, an (used) iPod (video), and also started nodding around (this is also why I found DankPods quite early).
    I amassed quite a few since then, mostly 5th-7th gentbh I don’t hear a difference between the 5 and the 5.5, but still, those are nifty devices! I did not do too many mods in the past (battery, iFlash, occasionally a new case), but I might attempt a Bluetooth-mod in the future.
    Congratulations to your „new“ iPod!

    Yeah I bought an iPod I think in year 2001 or 2002 (the first one with the touch wheel rather than buttons I think) and it was SOOOOOOO nice. I'd been carrying around books of CDs :-D and a portable CD player. But once I could store a lot of music on the phone,... game over for that guy. I could still see enjoying it now though. I strongly prefer reading on my Kindle compared to my phone and a part of that - albeit a small part - is that it's simple NOT the phone. So I don't get distracted by anything else. I did try to replace the battery on the iPod years after I stopped using it but if I remember right... it didn't work out so well

    • @matthewjbauer1990
      @matthewjbauer1990 7 місяців тому +1

      Yes, but also Apple wanted people to buy iPhones. Killing off the iPod forced people to either get an iPhone or look for something else. If you're heavily invested in iTunes music, you basically had no choice but to get an iPhone. As another benefit to Apple, they could get people to subscribe to Apple Music (I think it was Beats at the time).

    • @DNKI

      @@matthewjbauer1990 I mean, smartphones were always destined to be the "do-everything" device. It wasn't so much forcing as much as it was the direction of the industry. Apple was just a catalyst.
      Also, there was no streaming service before Apple Music. Beats were (and still are) a headphone manufacturer well before Apple bought them. They had iTunes as a media store and streaming services like Rdio and Spotify paved the way until Apple joined the fray.

      @@DNKI If you mean that Apple was the 1st "real" music store, I agree with that. They started in 2003 and Amazon didn't start selling MP3s till 2008. If you are talking full on streaming audio, Apple didn't start till Beats Music in 2014.
