      @@juliet6630 It’s widely known that companies often remind you that you own nothing and frequently remove access to content. Phones are now used to store memories and people take more photos now more than ever and apps and downloads also take up more. Having a designated device for music is awesome! A classic iPod touch has Bluetooth and ox capabilities so it’s a win win and they last far longer than most devices nowadays. It’s a no brainier.

    1:53 - Models older than the 5.5th gen also had Wolfson DACs. When buying iPods, beware of listings where the seller goes out of the way to mention the DAC because it's become an easy way for them to unreasonably mark up prices. The music file and headphones you use play a much bigger part in the audio quality anyway.

    I also had/have a 5.5, the main issue with using one of these in 2023 is that there is kind of a limit on how many songs you can have on it. Even if you beef up the storage you cant do anything about the RAM, when you have too many songs the low RAM causes it to crash and skip all the time. If you dont have many songs or dont need them all on the iPod all the time then they do still sound great.

      The 30GB version of the 5.5 still can take 20000 songs. I don’t know about you but to me that is still „many songs“. Sure there is a limit but it’s quite high and while worth considering it’s quite a high limit. 20k songs is not anything most people just own.

      Does the 6th and 7 gen have even more ram respectively?

    • @nostalgiatrip1
      @nostalgiatrip1 9 місяців тому

      @@richeyrich2203 Yes they do but, but there is some major differences, conditions, and "drawbacks". The first is that 6th and 7th gen doesn't use the Wolfson DAC which regarded as the "Best Sounding". And second is that there is some weird "updates" and conditions with them, they use a different OS and UI that is "updated" to have some of the iPod touch and iPhones like showing a clock when the screen is dimming, you get Cover flow which is meh and laggy on the iPod and overall is a little more cumbersome. Also the 6th Gen had a weird storage limit of 128GB even when you Flash upgrade, when the 7th doesn't. They are also harder to open and easier to damage then the 5.5 gens due to the aluminum covers but possible. So my recommendation is if you only want a music player and want the best quality get a 5.5 Gen 80gb upgrade to 256 with flash and you're good. But you want an ultimate iPod with a ton up to a TB of storage for both your music and movie libraries, and also willing to deal with the metal case to mod, then get a 160GB slim 7th Gen.

    Actually the old Rockbox version 3.15 you used in combination with the iFlash could be the root cause of the freezing issues and crashes you encountered.
    I´d always recommend to use the daily builds.
    There has been so much going on since 2019, also improving the compatibility with iFlash.
    It´s still not perfect, as rockbox simply expects a native IDE hard drive, since this is what the driver was written for.
    However, there is one kind of flash storage that will work flawlessly and that is a compact flash card.
    It´s a native IDE device and while it doesn´t offer extreme sequential speeds like modern SSD´s, it´s still a heck of a lot faster and more responsive than any HDD and is also able to outperform many modern SD cards.
    So if you ever want to revisit your iPod, from time to time a photographer tosses out a bunch of old compact flash cards for cheap.
    You may grab a 128gb one for example.

    • @RAndrewNeal
      @RAndrewNeal 11 місяців тому

      I'll have to look at updating mine, then. The workaround is to manage files while booted into the stock firmware, and switch to Rockbox when finished. This doesn't solve the occasional freezes and crashes though. But they're infrequent enough for me that they usually aren't more than a minor nuisance.

    So all that you really used from the used iPod was the metal frame and the electronics. It's nice that all those parts are available so you can repair/upgrade an iPod classic.

    I have added SD to a few of my iPods, which I bought just to do that. Lol
    I got burnt by a few people misselling their iPods as 5 or 5.5 when they were really 6.
    So I'm going to do one of those as well, but I've not had any luck loafing Rock Box.
    To have anything larger than 128gb you need Rock Box for the 6th gen as it has a limitation.
    Yes I got the idea from Dankpods but I still enjoyed watching your video. 😅

    I have an iPod Video 30GB from 2005. I loved it back then! I think that the iPod was fundamental in my youth since I was really listening to tons of music at that time.
    It still sort of works. The battery is a bit swollen, the headphone jack doesn't work, and it is pretty beat up. But I also have, from that same era, a Bose iPod dock speaker set. It charges my iPod and plays music. So my I just have to dock my iPod and I can just play music on it.
    So I still use my iPod to play music in my room every now and then. You can still sync your iPod with Apple Music in a Mac. Finding the cable is a bit more difficult, though

    I've had a 5th gen with an iflash adapter, rockbox & diymod since 2017 and recently bought a 7th gen and I'd recommend that over the 5/5.5 now. The cpu is significantly more powerful and runs rockbox a lot smoother. The Cirrus Logic DAC is very transparent and detailed compared to the Wolfson one so it's better if you're plugging it into a car or home system that is EQ'd for other sources as well - so for example with the 5th gen I get noticeably less high frequency response than if I play a CD. For listening directly, Rockbox has a built in 8 band parametric EQ plus high & low shelf filters and even a setting specifically for reducing listening fatigue if that's your thing

    That's some solid pandering to millennial nostalgia, and I'm there for it. I have more or less the same iPod sitting next to me on a shelf (5.0 30gb version, though). I bought it in 2006 shortly after starting college and used it more or less daily through 2011, when I bought an iPhone. It even still works, running for 3-4 hours on its original battery. Going from burned CD-Rs and trying to cram as much as I could onto a MiniDisc, to having just... all of my music on one device that easily fit in my pocket was a complete game-changer.
    Now... do I actually use the thing these days? Nah. It's a fun time capsule to chill with here and there, just like my Walkman and MiniDisc player, but the combo of Apple Music on an iPhone connected to AirPods Pro 2 is just too good to pass up. If the iPod ever actually breaks (I'm guessing the HDD eventually), I'll see if I can give it a refurb with a new battery and the same SD card mod, but try to keep it more or less stock otherwise.

      100%
      I'm not fooling myself to the point that this is going to be my main music machine when I always have my phone and BT headphones on me. The convenience is too good.
      However, for the few times a week I simply want to sit down and focus on music or relive some nostalgia, an iPod is perfect for that! I've been keeping it on my bedside to wind-down before I hit the hay.

    • @EggTamago7
      @EggTamago7 Рік тому

      @@Denki it’s definitely its own vibe, having a dedicated device just for music. I’d probably be more willing to give it a shot again if 3/4 of my music library weren’t streaming content. I have a decent collection from ripped CDs and iTunes purchases up until Apple Music launched, but everything after that would need to be purchased somehow first to get it onto an iPod. I once added that up… and we’re talking new car amounts of money 😓

    i've been a user of the classic for now almost 20 years. I currently have 8k songs saved, i have 3 units, all 80GB one in my car one in my bathroom (boseipod dock) and one spare in case. I recently had a computer glitch and was forced to re-boot my old mac and lost all files. I had an external HD for back up that i realized after the fact at one point it stopped getting the new additions. The HD has about 4, 500 or so. I need to disclose that 99.9% of my files are mp3 i bounced directly from my cd collection. I have never purchased a single iTunes. Now my old iMac is too old to download a program to bounce the files from the iPod to the computer. I also own an old MacBook air. I need to add new music but I don't really know how to go about recovering the tunes from the actual iPod. ANY FEEDBACK ? Grassy Ass so much!

    It’s strange that I seem so much non-dankpods-iPod-content recently.
    I like it!
    Back in the day, I always wanted an iPod, but I was poor, so I only had one of those terrible USB-Stick-MP3-players that used an AAA battery and had this tiny two-way-joystick.
    Then after a hand-me-down nano, around 10 years ago I finally got what I wanted back in the day, an (used) iPod (video), and also started nodding around (this is also why I found DankPods quite early).
    I amassed quite a few since then, mostly 5th-7th gentbh I don’t hear a difference between the 5 and the 5.5, but still, those are nifty devices! I did not do too many mods in the past (battery, iFlash, occasionally a new case), but I might attempt a Bluetooth-mod in the future.
    Congratulations to your „new“ iPod!
