Or by luck.. I'm sure luck results in lots of succes, when things are "strange". Fx fishing - "I" know eveything, so I fish with the exact right bait, colour, depth aso - then the novice trys to do the same, but can't controln anything, so fishes the wrong depth, with the most of the bait bit away by minnows or crabs, and all of a suddon things fit the "strange" conditions of the moment - wupteeee..

When I was 12(1964), my neighbor had a panhead that he rode. I watched him start it all the time. I jokingly asked him to let me ride it and he retorted with, "If you can start it, you can ride it." I smiled and took a minute, then fired it up. The look on his face was priceless! I explained that I'd watched him for weeks starting it and knew the procedure. I also told him I knew it was too much bike for me to ride. It was fun being a kid in the '60's!

Even guys with big-single knowledge couldn't do it , timing-levers-aside , it was the exact-same procedure as starting a BSA Gold-star race-bike or Manx-Norton-single . If you even rested your hand on the throttle, it wouldn't start . If it didn't start in 3-kicks, you had to 'un-flood' the motor and start again . When it started, people would recoil-backwards , it really Roared ! Dave NZ

I fly small airplanes as a hobby, and I asked him if he would figure out how to start it (it's a Cessna 172, just a normal piston engine propeller plane). He's a mechanic, so he knows a lot about motors. It took him some minutes, but he eventually fired it up.
What do you need to start an engine? Battery/power, fuel flow, mixture control, ignition/spark and throttle to keep the engine running. And usually in that order. It was very much fun for me to see him figuring out. Like the very first thing he said was "alright, so wheres the battery switch?".

ChatGpt response is : Starting a vintage motorcycle like the Harley Davidson WLC 1942 Navy spec requires a bit of knowledge and patience. Here are the steps you can follow:
Check the Fuel and Oil Levels: Make sure the motorcycle has enough fuel and oil. The oil should be checked by removing the oil tank dipstick, and the fuel should be checked by looking inside the fuel tank.
Turn on the Ignition: Locate the ignition switch, usually located on the right-hand side of the motorcycle's frame. Turn the switch to the "on" position.
Set the Choke: Locate the choke lever on the left-hand side of the motorcycle's handlebar. Set the choke to the "on" position to provide a richer fuel-air mixture for starting.
Prime the Carburetor: On the left-hand side of the carburetor, there is a small lever called a tickler. Press it down to prime the carburetor with fuel.
Kickstart the Engine: Move the kickstart lever into position and kick down with a smooth and firm motion. You may need to repeat this process several times until the engine starts.
It take 40s to ask and read, rest 4mn20s to test !

The guy thought he was a real old-school biker, and wanting to sound tough, he said “if you could start it you can test ride it” He went in his house and came back running when he heard the bike galloping. I kick started it with the second try. He didn’t know I had been riding since the 80s. We ended up buying the bike and like a full we sold it 2 Years later way before they went up in value. We did make about 7k on it so can’t complain.

Open fuel valve and turn on the ignition, you can also choke it but that depends on the engine, if you have those 2 things done you will start it eventually.

I realize what a museum piece this is and know the work you have done on this BEAUTIFUL bike. I actually knew the order of and how to start this bike as I watched a part of our group do it to his WLA back in the day. Sitting here LMAO because my 72 Shovelhead is still kick only. But since 1986 was the last year Harley sold a bike with a kicker I guess it's not surprising that few folks, even Harley techs, know how to use one, especially on a bike with a manual advance system.
Well since the bike is likely flooded after those folks kept kicking it I'd first turn the key and gas off, open the throttle all the way, and kick it half a dozen times to clear out the heads.
Then gas on - key off - two or three kicks with choke fully engaged - stop. Next - gas on - key on - 1/4-1/2 choke - spark fully advanced - throttle 1/2-/3/4 open - kick. Low compression engine should start with 1 to 4 kicks. If not stop and repeat process.
Nice bike. The Flatheads, small and large, were always favorites but my all time favorite are the 1928 JD and JDH models.

I built a Cafe' racer with a 140cc piranha engine. The compression on that engine is insane. When kickstarting Quality over quantity is the secret... and a hand over the air intake helps. If you attempt to kick it without giving it all you got, its coming back at you. It hurts really bad. Once its running, its a beast. Roll starting isn't an option, it will not roll start no matter what gear you are in.

Come to find out when I put a new battery in, it started right up and ran better too always. I think the old point type distributers made a difference in how Harleys started. Electrical contact or timing had to be just right. Some Triumphs with points, when the humidity was high outside you had to wipe between the points with a matchbook cover to get it dry enough to fire. Different bikes = different characteristics. Newer technology is much more reliable nowadays until it breaks then it's expensive.

Before watching this, here is my comment. One of my friend has a similar kind of military bike(not one from this company).. it's an old 500cc bike. kick start only. You can't just kick start it straight away. There is one pressure gauge on it, which moves left or right when you kick the starter. The trick to start it is, You have to kick the starter half way like an air pump several times. That will make the needle on the pressure gauge point straight up. It will stay there for few seconds, at that time give the kicker a full kick.. The bike engine will start. Without doing that pumping at the beginning, it is near impossible to start.

This video brought back a funny memory. I was not a Harley rider, but a Jap bike rider instead, but I had a number of aquantences who rode Harleys and the common consensus was that some of them could be hard to start especially the Sportsters.
I was considering buying a used sportster once and when I got to the guys house he said there might be some trouble getting it started. He kicked it and kicked it, taking rests and making adjustments in between. He finally changed the spark plugs and got it started and running. After that it was fine. I took it for a test ride and really enjoyed the bike, but in the end I decided not to buy it.
I was spoiled by how easily my big Jap road bikes started and how reliable they were compared to the Harleys. I've always had a love for the Harleys, but from a distance. Nope, I don't want to own one. The same goes for the finicky Brit bikes. They are very cool to me, but not to own, or rely on.
