Exactly. Not only that, then they turn around and reject the deal. Despite changing their minds, why tell the salesman it's his call if you don't want to do it?
I think they realized “he’s just going to go to a different dealer and they’ll sell it to him.” Dealerships compete with each other and they wanted the sale ultimately. Good video!
And they probably weren't thinking it through with the non-refundable part meaning he had already invested that money, and were just wanting to refuse the gift cards in hopes he would go ahead and pay with another method. But when he stood up and walked out, they realized he wasn't going to buy the bike unless they accepted the gift cards.
i doubt the dealer is struggling to make money and could not care less about loosing one sale. i think it came down to them realizing it wuld be a youtube video and it looking bad on HD as a brand in genreal and head office getting involved when a video is released showing that the cards are worth 2 grains of F all when you try buy a bike with them
@@danhunters8226 my guess is, the employees made the owner aware of the size of Bikes and Bears subscriber list After Sean and Dan left, and suddenly realized they needed damage control FAST.
Thing about the cashiers trying to talk you out of it is there is a giant scam where people get convinced to buy someone else a wild amount gift cards. You’ll typically see older people fall for it. Every grocery store I’d ever worked out would punish the cashier who sold the gift cards.
See the thing is you can tell if someone is being scammed or not in those situations bikes and beards didn’t come across as someone being scammed he was very matter of fact when talking with them. For me I wouldn’t of had an inclination that he was being scammed based on tone and body language and the reason older people are more likely to fall for these scams is because they don’t understand most people born after the 80s hell even some born in the 60s understand these things. Though I will admit some older people are insanely intelligent so I can’t really dock all older people or claim all younger people are smart enough
facts it’s crazy i work in retail i’ve heard stories of people at other locations of my chain that have been scammed out of thousands, one instance where someone was scammed out of around $20k over a course of a few months
Honestly it's really refreshing to see stores, at least, attempting to counsel you while purchasing an unusual amount if gift cards. You wouldn't believe how much money scammers bilk people out of by convincing them to get gift cards to stay out of jail, keep their SSN safe, fix their computer, etc. It really is an epidemic.
@@BikesandBeards I use to work for unidentified tech company (nda) and it was surprisingly common lucky for some they would try to call back and we would get it and it's like okay we don't need the giftcards okay this isn't something I can fix over the phone but you can go to any of these unidentified tech company authorized repair center or to unidentified tech company store
I used to work for walmart back when covid started and around the peak of gift card scams, they hounded on the idea that if you were ringing up a customer for gift cards you better make sure that it's for a legit reason, and even capped out at like $500 in total for the cashier where any more would require a hire up, and if you were buying in bulk like 10+ cards, they'd just out right refuse to allow the transaction and suggest a digital purchase for them. I guess the main reason being the scams becoming more and more common. but It might also just be that if someone complains and wants a refund there's nothing the store can do as the card was auto-magically funded the moment the card is purchased (and the store directly sends that money to the card company) any kind of refund by the store would ultimately result in a hit for the store on a unsellable product that could've already been drained.
They just didnt want to pay that fee, they wanted to bake it into the price of the bike aka make you pay the fee. Which they probably covertly do to everyone. Then they thought about the publicity and decided to write it off. I am actually kind of glad the cashiers at some stores questioned you about the cards though, because a lot of people get scammed and told to go buy bunches of gift cards, especially older people.
I have a few to charge for my air conditioning job for credit card. Why would I take that fee? I’m already taxed on top of that. Because the government is greedy we all have to suffer
They absolutely do that to everyone. I bought a brand new bike in 2020. 2 grand of the price was the shipping and handling of the bike. Even though I purchased the one at the dealership it was right in front of me. I was pissed.
Lawyer here. That is some very well-deserved bad press for that dealership. They shouldn't have hesitated. The fine print is crystal clear - gift cards are redeemable for Harley Davidson PRODUCTS. The motorcycles themselves are the flagship examples of HD products.
You cant fault them. No idea what back end charges they may face as well as the time it took to process that transaction. In the end they were good sports and any responsible business would question this completely unusual scenario.
To be more precise: Referring to the lawyer girl the cards only allow to buy merchandise. Not really sure if "merch" is the right expression for a whole bike. But nevertheless, imho the dealer made a real bad business decision that day.
@@Ano-Nymous Well, on the one hand, the specific language of the gift card (read aloud earlier) says "Products", but a motorcycle could still be called "Merchandise" accurately. On the other hand, though, the HD Cardholder's agreement stated that the dealership could choose to deny their purchase without much recourse. This purchase likely only went through because the buyer was the face of a nearly 2 million subscriber youtube channel. In basically any other case, the dealership would have pointed out that "This is very similar to a common scam tactic and we can't take that risk" and that'd be the end of it.
The salesman was right on, "money is money." You can buy a bike with change (advise rolls to make it easier) if you wanted to. The boss was the one sketched out and he has a valid point about the gift card scammers. All in all the dealership did you right and it seems your salesman probably reached up the chain to get clarification after you left. Good on him and hope he gets a good commission for selling that bike to you!
I just want to throw in a little math here. Now this could be totally wrong. But let's say small merch stuff has a 40% margin but such a bike only has a 20% margin cause it is more expensive to produce. Now we actually would have a problem for the shop. Cause let's say they pay 1% in fees to harley. Those fees are sadly not bound to their margins or what they actually make with a sale. So while they could make 8000$ for small merch stuff that added up to a summ of 20k. With half the margin for a single 20k bike sale they would only make 4000$ on that. And now the problem is that they still would have to pay the exact same fees for both. See what I mean?. Now part of why the salesman called him back was probably also because he never asked if they "could do something" about the price, if you get what I mean. Chances are you get them down to 19.500$ or even lower if you ask. He didn't, so the fee never truly was a problem. Don't know how this goes in the states but in germany you can generally ask about reduced price if you visit a cardealer even if the car is new
@@Davinhomx let's put it this way. harley davidson doesn't make money from selling gift cards alone. they're losing money. they need to sell them to walmart for $22. you buy the card for $25. walmart keeps $1 and $3 go to the payment provider/ credit card company. so if you go to a dealer and want to pay with 300 $25 gift cards you're paying $7500 but the dealer only recieves $6600 becaue he had to sell them for $22 in the first place. roughtly a 10-15% decrease in margin. obviously they wouldn't want to do that when the customer could've just payed in cash
@@KaptainKerl i don't even remember the video by now. But lets just agree that it isn't that simple in an actual market. Not everything is as obviouse as it seems and a net 10k for example doesn't equal the same profit in every way
"So what do you think changed?" What changed is the owner realized the huge amount of bad publicity he was going to get for being the 'uncool' guy that wouldn't accept all gift cards for a motorcycle sale after they figured out the size of your youtube channel.
It's not like the effort for swiping the cards was more than setting up financing, running credit, etc. Maybe they realized they would get chewed out by HD, or told they couldn't accept gift cards in the future.
@@WhoTFstolemyname when they go through all that extra work to set up financing they are actually getting paid well to do it. When vendors accept gift cards or credit cards for payments they automatically lose 3 to 5% or possibly more. So basically what happened here is the dealer didn't get to make any money off of financing yet still spent the extra time it would have taken just to run a bunch of gift cards that they're going to lose some money on to accept them. I mean if they would have been smart they would have made a big deal out of it and said 'Here at our dealership we welcome everyone with whatever form of legal payment they want to use!' 'We value our customers!!'. Instead they kinda made it look like they realized that they f**ked up because no HD dealer wants bad publicity.
Dude, this was pretty amazing because it was the exact situation that I went through. I did this over a year ago. I spent more on gift cards than you did and purchased my brand new Harley. Unfortunately, it still didn’t cover the cost of my new Harley. The only reason I didn’t cover the entire cost was because I ran out of stores on the way to the dealership, to buy enough gift cards, to cover the whole amount. But like I said, I spent more money on gift cards than you did. I never got charged a fee or a percentage.and the entire amount went towards the purchase of my motorcycle. We had an assembly line, going to run through all the cards. The main reason I did this was to get free gas ⛽️ because the dollar amount that I spent on the gift cards, a % of that got me free gas (fuel perks). I got approximately $3,000 in free gas (if memory serves me correctly), and that was my incentive to do it.
I get paid in gift cards and have done some nutty, high dollar purchases because the $ value of a gift card is less than the cost due to all of the scams and fees... I did a $10,000 fishing charter in $500 cards one time. Imagine doing the assembly line with a bunch of deck hands and a pissed off boat captain lol.
This story reminded me of the time my friends and I bought 17 dollars of gas with pennies. No gas stations wanted to take the pennies, so we put the gas in the tank first then we went inside to pay. Their faces were priceless when we put the bag of pennies on the counter. The clerk kept telling us that we will be short, but we were actually .50 more that we needed.
@@MRblazedBEANSYea… even now you can do that. Many places are phasing it out though. You just have to hit a few buttons and the clerk will unlock the pump, then when you’re done you can go inside and pay.
I imagine the owner wanted time to investigate the situation on their own and denied the sale as a precaution until they could figure out what was really going on. Once you left they likely looked into the UA-cam channel and talked to the manager and employee. After confirming you guys were legit and not scammers they gave the ok to call you guys back in
Depending on your jurisdiction, there are laws which force companies to accept gift cards. Here in Alberta, refusing to honor a gift card is a criminal offense and could land you two years in jail, and a 300,000 dollar fine.
I dont think thats a law here in the US unless its a state thing. But the law we do have is you can not decline ANY legal tender. if someone comes in with 20k pennies you have to take them, or open yourself to suit and criminal liability. In fact so many companies got away with it without the government doing their job its the real reason why theyre dissolving pennies from use.
@@rousrouslan4023 this one is yeah, but every card is different. Ive seen ones that charge you fees for every charge out of your gift card value. Many are still drawn out of visa and mastercards systems.
@@craigfell6906 what are you talking about lol this video was amazing. Even if it was planned, a lot of hard work still went into it, and tbh I don't buy that it was planned. If the cards hadn't worked at that dealership, they already stated earlier in the video they'd just try a different dealership.
We take these gift cards everyday at our dealership. Not sure what the confusion was but it's no different than if a customer wanted to pay with a Visa or Mastercard. Our own corporate Harley rep does this every time he buys a bike. It's annoying because of all of the swiping and entering but like the guy said, money is money.
You're telling me people regularly buy entire bikes with gift cards? Or are you just saying that someone will come in with a say $500 gift card and put it towards a bike?
I don’t know… it worked in the end, but I fully believe that it was because the owners looked up Bikes and Beards and chose your credibility over bad publicity. I have my doubts that this would go the same for someone without the same influence and/or credibility. Still was incredibly entertaining to watch! Keep the awesome coming!
I think they realized who you were and how unique of an advertising opportunity selling you a bike with gift cards was going to be as well as being nervous about someone claiming to have 20k in gift cards ready for a bike
"advertising opportunity". Did they say in the video which dealership it was? Because if not, it's not really an "opportunity". It's "Make less money on this and spend more time doing it or else I'll create a bunch of bad press for you".
On one hand it's weird and most people are aware of gift card scams these days, but on the other hand this guy is looking to pay in full the entire cost of the bike vs financing so I think it just tempted them too much.
I'm REALLY surprised buying that many gift cards at once didn't trigger an alert in Target's point of sale system and get you confronted by their loss prevention. Gift cards are a fairly common way to launder money. Edit: Never mind, that's EXACTLY what happened later in the video... 🤣
I don't really see what the problem would be as long as you are paying for the gift cards. For the store I worked at what would happen is that we would have to get a manager to put in the override key and they would ask if their purchase wasn't a result of being scammed
@@elliotthefennekin6506 Same where I worked, and then usually if it was a ridiculous amount like in the video, the manager would discreetly call us over to investigate.
Bottom line the dealership didn’t want to take the 3% hit for the merchant fee for every gift card scanned. Then realized it’s winter and they are sitting on stock that is most likely not going anytime soon.
Got my Christmas bonus one year in a $500 gift card to the dealership I worked at. I didn’t own a vehicle of that brand, and I did all my own service so it was a pretty useless gift. The owner was a cheapskate, even though we made him millions every year.

The “fee” they were talking about it the swipe fee that card companies charge stores. It ranges from 2-8% and most companies openly tell you if you use a card that there will be an extra charge to offset the swipe charge. Most places only charge the fee if it’s over a couple hundred dollars because those transactions have a larger cost.
So everyone they sell to is using cash. Right 😂😂. More like it was a separate processing fee built into the gift card itself which is why u can buy the card for free and your only paying what u loaded on the card.
When I worked in a dealership we had to worry about "washing money" it can happen when a person forges money then buys gift cards and spends them. The merchandise can wind up not being paid for properly. Receipts wouldn't prove anything in the instance. I bet there was even a conversation where the sales rep was told they would lose commission or even have to pay for the insurance deductible or bike.

Im glad stores actually tried to stop you seriously, I work in retail and have seen our store just blatantly ignore situations where it's obvious a scam is being conducted on someone.
How though? you have to buy the card with real money. I had to purchase about 5k worth of cards one time and had to choose the amount up to 250 on each card.. The kid cashier tried to say I can only buy 2k worth and I asked for the manager and he said there wasn't a limit. I think people just assume something without thinking. Where's the scam if it's being bought with legitimate money?
@@briannmd1 think @JacobReichertchannel is referring to the person BUYING the gift card(s) being scammed. A lot of retail locations see unweary or elderly folks being conned into buying gift cards, which they give the information of to the scammers, who either use them or sell them for money. It's part of most big retailers' customer service training now to ask questions about purchases of over $500 in gift cards to make sure that no one is being taken advantage of.
@@briannmd1 I also work in retail. Whenever someone comes in to the store and asks to buy a large amount of gift cards, we are instructed specially on how to handle the situation. At the end of the day it is a judgement call on the cashier's side, but if we make the wrong choice our job *could* be on the line. Usually, I just try to bring it up in small talk while scanning the other items and let the person know that there are scams that can happen. We even have fliers to hand out. As long as they have a good reason and seem like they're alright, I usually let it go through. One person I remember wanted to buy like $1000 worth of gift cards for a company party, another had like 10 grand kids and wanted to give them each $200 visa gift cards for Christmas. I've never had anyone come to my register being scammed, but it's happened at least once or twice while I've been in the store, so I'm glad that places are looking out for their customers to some degree.
I'm surprised they didn't get accused of money laundering lol. When I worked retail we were cautious of people buying bulk gift cards because people will buy gift cards with stolen credit cards
Fees to use the same brand of gift card makes no sense. It's not like they are paying visa or Mastercard for the services. When someone buys a gift card it puts the money on that company to use at a later time. I don't get why he was trying to charge a fee. Maybe a tactic to have him use another method.
This is one of those questions you don't really think to ask or think about, but good to know it's possible. I mean, I personally think it should have been possible either way if you have proof of purchase for the gift cards so they know it isn't a scam.
Folks at B&B I found your channel by pure accident, I’m not even into bikes or have a beard but I’ve enjoyed every episode. Great presentation. Solid attitudes and personalities. Just great to see people being good people to one another
I get the feeling if you didn't have a youtube channel they wouldn't have changed their mind. But a lot of scammers trick people into buying gift card, the stores probably thought you were a victim and the dealership probably thought you were a scammer trying to turn your ill-gotten goods into something you could sell for cash. The dealership probably thought if this vid gets out that we refused to accept our own gift cards then people will stop buying them.
@@travismccloskey9733 I can see it from both points of view, but the dealership would've tanked the sales of gift cards which would've knocked on the sales of their over priced merchandise. But he did have the receipts and it wouldn't have been hard to check them out. They'll probably update the terms now saying there's a limit on how many gift cards you can use at once or that they can't be used to buy the bikes.
The whole "scamming" thing makes ZERO sense in the context of this video. Scammers have people buy gift cards and then send them the gift card information as payment for fake services. In this video, they are purchasing gift cards so that they can make a legitimate purchase on their own.
@@huehuehue-x3c It does, I know he didn't but he could've scammed a whole state of old people to get that many gift cards and now wants to turn them into something he can sell for cash. Why would anyone willingly get that many gift cards to buy a bike instead of buying it normal with money? But as he said I'm doing it for content and to see if it can be done.
@@dave4803 what else are you supposed to use the gift cards on? I was under the impression that most people buy motorcycles at Harley Davidson dealerships.

When I heard, “Why are you taping?” I knew this was going to go south. Taping? Really bro? The 90’s called and they want their vintage reference back. No one has taped anything in 10 years. At least not in the US. Then he started in with the fees. I love how Shawn turned it around after he tried to explain how the dealership would pass on its processing fee to the customer and says, “So it’s a fee then.” The old guy shut up after that and had no other option other than to start putting up bureaucratic roadblocks. I am am older guy, not as old as the manager but old enough to know you have to constantly educate yourself and be ahead of trends. I am willing to bet money that manager doesn’t even like the Pan America because it’s an ADV bike. I don’t know of course but I know several Harley guys at that age and they aren’t fans. The manager is nowhere to be seen when they come back. Not surprised at all.
The reason why they are so weird about gift cards is due to the policies stores now have concerning irs fraud and things like that. They were thinking you were being scammed. That's also why there's a limit on the amount you can purchase. It's to protect the retired elderly from being taken advantage of.
Harley Davidson would be the most crazy scammer request though lol. Don't they have to resell the cards for a slight discount (depending on the popularity or usefulness) I imagine that the Harley city cards would be less valuable.

I ran a bank branch inside Walmart for over 6 years and fraud was extremely prevalent through gift cards so it was likely raising some red flags. Normally we ask the same questions about why the person isn't choosing alternative ways to purchase something. We just try to understand the logic behind the purpose and make sure someone isn't getting completely duped. Granted, most of the time it was an elderly person getting romanced scammed for their social security. We just did what we could to educate people and if they didn't listen at that point it's unfortunate but we did what we could. Concerning spending them at a Harley, I may do that after I heard youtube channel and did some research. From a unknown rando though, I would have so many red flags It would feel like a huge risk. I would just have so many 'why' questions. Also putting it on the Salesman and denying it because of the boss it silly. He should have just left him out of it decision wise.
To be honest, it sounds to me like they would’ve done it (the first time) if they could have up charged to cover the fees they have to pay on their end. When you pointed out the policy that there’s no fee involved with them, they stopped the deal.
I think so as well. They probably pay 15-20% in fees, when ppl are buying simple merch it doesn’t matter much but taking loss like that on a bike stings. I imagine the boss told the sales guy he wouldn’t make anything off the sale and that’s why he said “your call”.
I bet there's a federal law that the company can't charge a fee for using a gift card. The government made it illegal to have gift cards that expire, so they probably put in the bit about charging fees at the same time.
I remember when I worked retail, I used to HATE gift cards because of how they were structured on the register. The person who sold the gift card got 99% profit on the card. When the car was redeemed, it would actually show as a discount on the product, so it would come off the profit for that sale. So if you sold a gift card, your GP for the day would be insane (the aim was 12%), but when someone redeemed one, it killed your GP for the day.
They have to do it that way. At least at publicly traded companies, and because that is common practice, probably everywhere else too. It's because there are laws for publicly traded companies that determine when they can considered income vs liabilities etc on their balance sheet. There are very specific points in the transaction at which you can say you finally made profit on. When you take an order, like with gift card, you have not delivered the goods yet so the card, or the order is still a liability you owe. Only when you deliver it, ie they take the goods, from the store with the card can you then considered it profit. So they have to say, they sold this... and when it's redeemed they have to deduct it from their money. To balance the equation.

So typically, grocery stores aren't allowed to do transactions over $5k. But here's the weird part, stores CAN do more amounts, but they would need the store director to do the transaction.
Dan is such a class act. The quiet genius behind the scenes. Loyal and unwavering. I mean, sure, he is no Craig, but if I ever needed a wingman for my B-Team, I'd be lucky to have Dan!
To be fair, even if you couldn’t purchase a motorcycle with 20k in gift cards, you could easily spend that in the accessories department. Couple leather jackets, stage 1 and a 5k service should get you pretty close!😂
Long time watcher from Australia here, your humbleness is always great to witness even in a situation like that you still have praise for them guys it’s so good to see 🙏
Card service charges 6% on small amounts, 8% on the 500s plus a base fee for each card. The business decision was running all those cards was going to cost them roughly 7% so $1400 and after the salesman gets his commission there probably wouldnt be any money left for the owner. Then when they left the salesman spoke up and said the bad publicity is about to be shown to millions of people on UA-cam and probably get back to HD eventually showing they would not honor the cards and wanted the customer to pay the fees, and the boss realized the small profit or loss even was worth taking a hit on.
I've held more than half a dozen jobs as cashier, every single one capped out gift card purchase around $200 and over $50 required manager. Scams and taking stolen money to wash the funds is common. At staples I had this happen every week, and majority of time it was foreign exchange college students. Wanted to buy couple thousand in amazon or big box retailers like best buy, easily flipped. One store had a policy no gift cards with cash purchase, yeah its that bad.
I love that you are able to drive it home straight after buying it. Where I live, you have to get the paperwork for the bike from both the seller and the car registry department that has all the specs of the bike... Then you have to go to the townhall of the county your residency is in to declare it to the IRS and with the paper you got there you have to get an appointment to register the vehicle and get your plates which can take a few weeks... THEN... you get to drive your bike....
I think the dealership were just freaked out at first, then they probably realised the gift cards really can be used for buying a bike. I bet you were panicking about it though 😂

Love the videos, the restoration ones make me want to go try and fix up the old 1975 Harley dirt bike my grandpa and worked on when I was in my early teens. I still remember the feeling when I heard it running on its own the 1st time.
The boss didnt want to get charged the fee so he wanted to pass it on to you.. and you had a right to talk to the owner directly.. and they changed their mind because its bad pr on their part if they denied your purchase...
I love how your friend said 'That's what happens when you don't come to see me once in a while.' He's probably the one who knew right away you were dead serious about this, so he proved it to them 🤣 Good stuff man, ride safe!
So basically there's a fee on the back end for the Harley Davidson dealership to pay on each gift card, and the dealers weren't willing to cop that fee on that amount.
This had me laughing out loud multiple times. The whole ordeal was epic and scanning of the cards in the end was the icing on a totally messed up cake. But it was awesome and I’m sure HD will be updating their giftcard policy in the nearest future😂
Is HD missing a marketing opportunity here? It makes perfect sense, to give/get a sizeable gift card (as opposed to many lower denomination cards ) to the enthusiast. Allowing for that all important Freedom of choice (at the dealership)! And thank you for revealing the issues and questions that arise in the wild when attempting such an endeavor (it was an eye opener, even though in retrospect the peoples transactional reactions along the way makes perfect sense!)
As someone who has worked at a grocery store for years, this is one of the most common types of scams we deal with. So just seeing the title immediately sketched me out.

Your videos have sparked my interest in motorcycles again. I'm studying for the test but have no bike to take the driving portion in. So I've been looking at cheap ones and figuring out how to save up for one
I'm not sure where you are located, but if in the U.S., look and see if there is an MSF Rider Training Course near you. They let you use their bikes, and most states that they operate in will waive their road course if you pass the 2 day training program.

First time seeing your videos: awesome video, definitely subscribed! Good on the dealership to change their mind. They probably got spooked at having to cover the cost of the “fee”, that’s when it got a little sideways. Second, when information is filtered up and the head cheese is only given so much info to make a decision, it’s always best to lean on the side of caution. They probably made a follow up call to fill in the info gaps and got the green light.
If you buy the gift cards using a Target Red Card, you get 5% off, so even if they do charge you a fee, as long as the fee is less than 5%, you could come out ahead! Although, I'm not exactly sure if Harley Davidson allows for haggling, but I'm sure you can find some other, easier way to get 5% off. However, you can't beat that free arm workout from swiping those cards!
12:1320:000$ for 1 Year of Food...! Meanwhile I'm Sitting here not even spending 500$ per year... Even if multiplied for a family that would "only" be 1000-2000$... Not surprised you spend that much if you can easily gamble another 20:000$ on a luxury purchase. Don't really have a point, that statement just caught me depressingly off guard. UA-cam splurges are hard to watch.
I had a huge problem with Walmart, trying to consolidate small amount gift cards by purchasing $500 gift cards to use online to buy a fridge because they limit you to 5 forms of payment per transaction.
What an interesting experiment. I agree with the salesman, "Money is money". The only part that confused me was when your Layer Girl said you have to tell the dealership what the value of the card is because they don't have access to know how much it is.?
That's been the case with other gift cards I've bought. The point of sale doesn't show the available balance, you just give them an amount to try and it's a pass or fail. When you buy most gift cards, there will be information on the packaging on how to register it and check the amount available. I suppose the dealer COULD do that, but it's probably against most stores policy and likely the terms of service when they sign up for being able to use gift cards.
I don't know why people are hating the boss, he was clearly a older/experienced business man and this was probably the first time in his entire life he saw a guy walk in with a box filled to the brim with HD Gift Cards asking to buy an entire motorcycle with said gift cards. And on top of that the guy was probably off put by a camera guy filming the entire process. It was eyebrow raising for sure and if you owned a dealership you'd think twice before letting someone potentially screw you over with this whole gift card shenanigan especially because it's well known gift cards are associated with a lot of scam techniques. He was put on the spot and didn't feel comfortable winging the whole ordeal/transaction he was just uncomfortable. He also clearly called someone that told him it could be a scam so he was on edge, I think he did fine to be honest.
i am sure, after this, they will have a mention, that you may not use gift cards for purchasing a motorcycle anymore...or a limit to the amount of cards! they will definitely do it 🤣🤣 love you guys, hope i get my hands on that m1motogear spray anytime soon....
Thats exactly whats going to happen. The reality is, it would be a good way to buy a big ticket item without having to report anything to the FEDs. When a car is purchased with $10K Cash not a check but Cash, all dealerships have to report it.

The cards not having fees is in reference to when buying from a vendor. Some visas, for example, have a $2/3 purchaser fee on top of what the giftcard is worth. BUT much like credit cards, gift cards can put a fee on the business theyre used at. Feel free to share with your lawyer cause knowing this woulda saved some headache. Congrats on the bike!
That’s crazy. I know this video is older but it’s one I haven’t watched. I just bought a bike from them a few days ago, 3 in total from that dealership. Steve is a great sales manager and overall that’s one of the best HD dealers I’ve ever been to and purchased from.
@@BikesandBeards If you just went to a HD dealership and just gave away 20k in gift cards, then no, it wouldn't have been a bad thing. Mr. Beast gives away MILLIONS of dollars. You haven't heard of him?
The owner or manager could have called the card processing company and made a special deal with the fees for this time with all the amount of gift cards you had before they told you no in the beginning. Just happy they changed their minds and you got the Harley!
I thought I recognized the store and surrounding area, then I realized that you were at Chesapeake, which is where I took my rider safety course and also where I was headed when I blew the transmission out of my RZ350!
The reason for the gift card issue, is that its a common way for scammers to get old peoples money. It can be damaging to the customer and the business themselves. Lots of older people are unaware when being scammed and are told they have to buy gift cards and send them the codes in order to get their money back. Most of the time theyre just trying to protect you.
I've been to some sketchy harley dealers for sure. Lacking customer service and a little bit of nose in the air. But I'll be honest, on my last motorbike purchase I delta with the Japanese crowd and oh wow Harley really is much better to deal with and alot less fees. This was an awesome video. To bad you can't buy a Honda on gift cards that would be the real story.
Guarantee they initially refused because of the fees they'd incur then realised the exposure they'd get from your channel so decided to let you get the bike
As someone that works at ATL Harley-Davidson, you 100% could do this and buy a bike from us. We accept anything that has cash value for trade ins I was told 🤷🏼♂️ We got a camper in the back that someone traded in.
Wouldn't the fees be a taxable work expense that the company can claim at tax time? I'm sure he didn't even try to bargain a price.. probably asked how much? They tell him a price and he goes sweet, I'll be in later. Great episode.
Nice of the boss to put it on the salesman. Salesman had it right the first time he said “money is money”.

Good video!
Nah I think they looked him up on UA-cam and figured the risk of refusing to accept a valid payment was too big
Exactly. Where else is he going to spend 20K with of non-refundable HD gift cards. . . At another dealer of course.
I feel like there could be some legality or HD policy issues if they refuse to take the gift cards.

Thing about the cashiers trying to talk you out of it is there is a giant scam where people get convinced to buy someone else a wild amount gift cards. You’ll typically see older people fall for it. Every grocery store I’d ever worked out would punish the cashier who sold the gift cards.
Yeah, the giant by me even has huge signs about it and stuff
Sorry but, if they get punished, why even have gift cards anymore?
Exactly. You can actually be punished by law if there is enough neglect
It really is an epidemic.
thats a very interesting perspective. i did not consider that
I watch walmart do this once. An old lady was trying to buy apple gift cards and they talked her out of it plus called the police on her behalf.
This is the IRS calling, you owe me 20k in harley gift cards to keep this warrant from being signed lol
Because the government is greedy we all have to suffer
i pick my medicine up at the same target he was buying the gift cards at lol. Rebuild Rescue is another big channel that is from where we live too.
nah its called content they wanted to make it seem like they couldn't do it to hook you in LMAO
They absolutely do that to everyone. I bought a brand new bike in 2020. 2 grand of the price was the shipping and handling of the bike. Even though I purchased the one at the dealership it was right in front of me. I was pissed.
Which is wild to think they about lost that deal over 700 bucks. Thats with the bike being 20k with 3.5% cards normally charge
Lawyer here. That is some very well-deserved bad press for that dealership. They shouldn't have hesitated. The fine print is crystal clear - gift cards are redeemable for Harley Davidson PRODUCTS. The motorcycles themselves are the flagship examples of HD products.
The fine print also says "redeemable in participating dealerships "
I know this is an old comment but I'm interested in what you practice that you came to that conclusion
Not everything is as obviouse as it seems and a net 10k for example doesn't equal the same profit in every way
Not all money is equal. The dealership had to pay a fee to accept this specific form of payment
@sadcat520 money is money. Otherwise, it would not be considered money.
"So what do you think changed?" What changed is the owner realized the huge amount of bad publicity he was going to get for being the 'uncool' guy that wouldn't accept all gift cards for a motorcycle sale after they figured out the size of your youtube channel.
yes
yeah, they looked up the yt and saw 1.59m subscribers 😆
It's not like the effort for swiping the cards was more than setting up financing, running credit, etc.
Maybe they realized they would get chewed out by HD, or told they couldn't accept gift cards in the future.
Which means a regular guy couldn't do the same.
Now this is some big brain maneuvers here
Interesting
Sir, you are a god damn genius. I admire your ingenuity.
I get paid in gift cards and have done some nutty, high dollar purchases because the $ value of a gift card is less than the cost due to all of the scams and fees... This story reminded me of the time my friends and I bought 17 dollars of gas with pennies. No gas stations wanted to take the pennies, so we put the gas in the tank first then we went inside to pay. It ranges from 2-8% and most companies openly tell you if you use a card that there will be an extra charge to offset the swipe charge. Most places only charge the fee if it’s over a couple hundred dollars because those transactions have a larger cost.
So If it was 20k how much do u think the fees would be

I'd guess the fees amounted to about $600. Maybe they figured they had enough room in the price to warrant paying the fees.
Ya….. a good salesman always has a bit of room to knock down a price a bit. Plus the press from the video. They thought why not….
The owner likely was reminded this was a 1+ mil subscriber channel of bikers and the negative coverage could literally put them into bankruptcy.

@@NotFromConcentrate why are you charged. Makes no sense

The reason why they are so weird about gift cards is due to the policies stores now have concerning irs fraud and things like that. They were thinking you were being scammed. That's also why there's a limit on the amount you can purchase. It's to protect the retired elderly from being taken advantage of.
It’s not just that. It is very common for thieves to steal your credit card and buy gift cards.
Money laundering it’s easier to move gift cards then stacks of money.

Harley Davidson would be the most crazy scammer request though lol. Don't they have to resell the cards for a slight discount (depending on the popularity or usefulness) I imagine that the Harley city cards would be less valuable.

They didn't know that at the beginning
@@Noadvantage246 That fee structure is not true

Hey @Bikes_and_Beards I'm getting a bunch of fraudulent scam comments on this that claim to be you, just so you know.
That was epic, good job holding them to their word. I hope you didn't have to pay any fees. Enjoy that PanAm can't wait to se the videos on it!

@@BikesandBeards If you just went to a HD dealership and just gave away 20k in gift cards, then no, it wouldn't have been a bad thing. Mr. Beast gives away MILLIONS of dollars. You haven't heard of him?
@@BikesandBeards Yea. I'm not a Mr.Beast fan but a 20k gift card give away would be something he would do. You guys rock though. Great video.
3:51, you missed your wife's birthday?!?!?
I'mma stand over here
while the lightning strikes!
We accept anything that has cash value for trade ins I was told 🤷🏼♂️
We got a camper in the back that someone traded in.
Should throw a couple gift cards my way. Gonna buy a bunch of those sweet Harley Davidson hats
18:37 props to the camera man for really chomping on those chips he got
Wouldn't the fees be a taxable work expense that the company can claim at tax time? I'm sure he didn't even try to bargain a price.. probably asked how much? They tell him a price and he goes sweet, I'll be in later. Great episode.
I live near where you are this is fire bro it’s cool
