In high school, me and my smoking buddy would fire up and watch old TV shows with the sound off, while blasting music. It was amazing how often the music would synch up.
As another musician/writer I find sometimes Ideas songs and stories can "float" between multiple people and minds as if deliberately choosing who will become their creative "parent" who will give the art life... I think that's why sometimes similar ideas all pop up at once. Or perhaps its the human race's unconscious response to cultural influences coming thru till the idea gets born.
Edit: he said - "I'm not even gonna K-- ya. Right? It begins with a sharp, short shock...." Then I lose whatever he's saying in that accent XD
I've always considered "US and Them" to be a masterpiece inside the masterpiece known as DSOTM.
The beautiful, beautiful music written by Rick Wright.
Really is a gorgeous piece of music. Funny to think it started life as a piano piece, written by Rick, and titled The Violent Sequence. It was written for the movie. Zabriskie Point.
@@ilonahesseling4821 Richard Wright
@@Ozarkprepper643 Everybody called him Rick.
This is one of my favorites from PF. I think it’s the genius use of opposing concepts (us/them, with/without, etc.) in the lyrics along with their amazing music to convey the dialectic nature of human conflict. The music has an epic, ominous and foreboding feeling capturing the feeling of endless wars and propaganda perfectly.
I first heard this album 50 years ago and have never associated it with The Wizard of Oz !! So glad that you are on the Pink Floyd journey ..Welcome aboard !!
Apparently a journalist suggested this in 1995
But i am so here for the Pink Floyd journey. So far everything i have heard was amazing.
Have a great day.
Us & Them is about war and it's about the difference in the classes, rich and poor and the separation between the two!
It helps to be stoned to the gills if you want to experience how it sorta matches up with the movie. What I noticed here was... the witch being dressed in black and Dorothy being dressed in blue when the line "Black and blue hits" and Glenda turning to a ball of energy and floating away when down and "out" lyric hits. "The lolipop gang" dance moves are all in perfect time with the beat too. Otherwise it's mostly the mood of the music syncing with the mood of the movie in certain places. Not all the time, but sometimes if you are really looking for it.
Thanks for sharing that. I use to love being stoned to the gills. 😅. Wish i discovered it before i got sober 😄
이 노래는 저장해서 자주 들어야 겠어요
Masterpiece!!!!!!!!!!! 👌👌👌👌
This song is meant to be seen in your head.
Meaning.....the lyrics and musicality of it evoke the images to one's mind.
It takes you deeper without video in my opinion.
Not hating....just an observation.
Great reaction!
Thats a great observation and great point as well. And i agree. The songs i have listened to so far by Pink Floyd definitely have that quality.
'Dark Side of the Moon' is an album that is well worth listening to at some point from beginning to end. It's transcendent, but be careful not to have an existential crisis🤞🏼
Must do that at some point. And thanks for the heads up!
SAEDD, THE ALBUM SAT IN THE CHARTS FOR ( 950 ) WEEKS STR888888!!! LMAO 😊THAT'SSSSS INSANE BUDDY! 😮
And it asks to be listened as a whole! Although the songs are all briljant on its own, listening to the whole album is a next level experience!
Pink Floyd is best listened to by laying on the floor with headphones on and eyes closed.
This suite of 4 songs is, in my opinion, the most beautiful lyrics ever written in the history of music.
"Us and Them" precedes the song "Any Color You Like" which, by its title, alludes to the so-called free will that men claim to possess.
Then comes "Brain Damage" which explains where all this madness comes from, and finally "Eclipse", sums up the reality of human life, in all its limitations.
Check out the PULSE live version of US AND THEM.
Will add that one to my list!
So many good memories with this song 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻 The first 8 track that I had bought. The car had this album on repeat constantly
That is something you never forget. Good times! Thanks for sharing.
Greetings from Canada. That was me... the word was CALM. You're welcome. For this one: not only the war, but the massive unemployment and dislocation that follows every war. btw you cut off before the end and missed the killer line: "For want of the price of tea and a slice, the old man died." (slice= toast). Peace, love and bellbottoms.
Thanks for that!
Oh i didnt realize i cut the video of too soon. Or maybe it was the video itself.
I will probably check out the Pulse version too.
Wizard of Oz? What does that have to do with this song? Love this song, especially the saxophone parts
Urban legend claims that if you play Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon while watching “The Wizard of Oz,” there’s an incredible synchronicity that could only come about had the band literally planned the entire album around the movie.
Pink Floyd has denied the rumor outright for years, with Floyd drummer Nick Mason giving one of our favorite answers to MTV in 1997: “It’s absolute nonsense. It has nothing to do with ‘The Wizard of Oz.’ It was all based on ‘The Sound of Music.’”
Thanks for taking the time to share this! Saves me some time 😄
@@Londoneye57 We used to do that in college, and it *absolutely* works.
The synch works in parts. As the movie starts, a 5-bar gate is seen through a hanging musical triangle - making the album cover. That makes me shiver every time. It is so very apparent and obvious. Coincidence? Reality loves them ❤
The song is about equality and inequality and injustice in all spheres of life and to all people. The album really tells universal truths in quite simple and resonant language. That is what makes it timeless for all generations. The music is totally iconic and instantly recognizable, too, of course ❤❤
I’ve heard it said that Roger Waters’ architectural education helped, in part and with the help of the others, design these measured and spacious landscapes. Makes sense 😎
The movie is spellbinding. So very good.
Yea ... the second half of the movie , when the album is restarted ; the coincidences of the music and film fade , I discovered after seeing it in cinema several times ( with pink floyd playing ) THANKS for adding your thoughts !
This album should be listened all at once, it tells the story of life..... I never got it or PF til the first time i did acid.. then holy fuck.....
So -were wondering what happened to Phil Collins?
I never saw how this matches
Right. Not at all actually.
There light have been mind altering substances involved when this person discovered this connection. Im sober, but i would have tried it a few years ago. Who knows what i might have found
@@SaeedReacts. 😆
True words!
Dark Side of the Moon is a masterpiece and it’s an album I grew up listening to in the 70’s
Timeless music!
Just a fabulous song.
100%
As a writer too, i recomend u listen to an amazing song… Echoes by Pink Floyd, but not the Pompeii version, u must listen to the Gdansk version. You will enjoy it sooo much.
Thanks for that recommendation! Will check it out.
🌈Thanks for the reaction Saeed🌈
Thanks again for this one!
You should do a multi part review of Pink Floyd's The Wall movie. It's a masterpiece.
Thats definitely an idea worth considering!
Great song and heavy message. The album will stand the test of time. The novelty of a few instances of coincidence with the pairing of Wizard of Oz and DSOTM will eventually and rightfully be forgotten. It was interesting to do that pairing to see if the profundity lived up to the hype. There were a few interesting coincidences, but I was instantly skeptical that it was something deliberate, especially knowing the ego of Roger Waters. Lol
Oh so you tried it?
Its cool to test it, but to take it with a grain of salt. I think its awesome you checked it out for yourself.
yeah I agree with you. I don't know who ever put this together with the film but it was a silliest idea in the extreme!!!
I did a bit of reading on it yesterday and supposedly it was Charles Savage of the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette who first suggested it in 1995.
@@SaeedReacts. Fantastic! ...
What a loser...🙄I can't see the point, really. Wouldn't it be nicer just to lay back with a nice glass of red or a bottle of Johnny Walker blue whiskey with your eyes closed and your headphones on in a soft leather chair and listen to the song intended?
Beautiful song, my favorite from PF. I think the only way this Wizard of Oz thing works is if you're stoned.
There might be something to that :)
Don’t bother. Let your mind drift and create your own visualizations while listening to Pink Floyd. The Wizard of Oz is an amazing movie with its own acting and music. It stands alone too
I enjoyed your reaction. I love Pink Floyd and I enjoyed The Wizard of Oz when I was young but to say they sync up? I don't see it. Still, I love listening to you. Thanks.
I never saw it.
Apparently the album should be started at the third roar of the MGM lion in the movie.
A journalist wrote about this in 1995
Thanks so much for watching.
OH YEAHHHHH SAEED, YOU GOTTA DO THE ALBUM FOR SURE ( DARK SIDE OF THE MOON ) 💯😊IT'S A STORY / CONCEPT ALBUM AS IS MOST OF FLOYD 👍 WISH YOU WERE HERE, ANIMALS, THE WALL, ALLLLLLL CONCEPT ALBUMS SAEED!
I checked out a few songs from the Pulse Concert. I believe some of them were from this album. Need to check out more.
Forget the wizard of oz bs, just listen to the album in one sitting, start to end. It's awesome.
Ahoy mate, please watch the the 'PULSE' version aswell it's brilliant, three cheers to you thanks
Definitely want to hear that version
Every person is doing themselves a disservice if they don't take the time to experience this entire album, beginning to end, in one sitting.
Plug in, put on your best headphones, push play, close your eyes, and let the music take you away.
I could be wrong but i don't think the song ends at " The Old Man Dies"....
Even so , it is best heard when it flows into the next number amyway. lol
I definitey need to listen to the entire album in order
👍👍👍 @@SaeedReacts.
Richard Wright rarely gets any recognition but he did write this song with lyrics by Rodger Waters
Be careful what you read on the internet it's often misleading.
Been a fan of Pink Floyd's 68.
What's fortunate enough to attend five of their concerts. Although one was a Encore concert following night.
Have everything they recorded on vinyl. I did that with no other group or artists. So.....
Thanks for sharing this! Credit where credit's due!
Awesome you saw them 5 times!
It's my fault ; I left it out on the request page for space ...
Patient Zero : In August 1995, the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette published an article by CHARLES SAVAGE suggesting that readers watch the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz while listening to the 1973 Pink Floyd album The Dark Side of the Moon. Savage said the idea was first shared on an online Pink Floyd newsgroup According to Savage, if you start the album as the MGM lion roars onscreen, “The result is astonishing. It's as if the movie were one long art-film music video for the album. Song lyrics and titles match the action and plot. The music swells and falls with character's movements ... expect to see enough firm coincidences to make you wonder whether the whole thing was planned. In his 1995 article, Savage favoured starting at the lion's first roar, but he acknowledged in 2023 that the third roar had by then become the usual start point.
Thanks for the extra info. Its pretty cool !
I don't believe there is any relationship between this album and the wizard of Oz. You could play any album to this movie and it would be the same.
Its apparently a theory that has been around since 1995.
Might have been discovered with some EL ES DEE
@@SaeedReacts. I remember doing this when I was in college in 1994. We weren't tripping, but it still worked. Of course, I had already been a fan of PF and this album since I was a toddler.
The Movie has nothing to do with the song. The Wizard of Oz came out in 1939. Dark side of the Moon came out in 1973.
I don't know who first started "The Dark Side Of The Moon" album and The Wizard Of Oz film combination, but it doesn't work, Not at all, None of it, it's ridiculous.
It just takes away from the PF listening experience because our brain focuses on sight predominately before hearing.
After reading a bit about it, it supposedly was Charles Savage who first suggested it in an article in 1995.
4 minutes in and there is NO correlation between the film and the music.
All the film does is distract from the music and the lyrics. 6:49
Amazing song, it's a shame your first exposure to it was this way distracted by this silliness. The lame connections between some songs and the movie are a huge stretch at best. Probably a hundred other songs you can do the same thing with and get better results.
Total waste of time imo.
I understand your point.
Probably will check out the Pulse version as well
WHAT does the video har anything to do with the music. Close the eyes and listen to the music insted of getting distracted by the video.
A journalist in 1995 suggested that you could sync up the film with the album. I guess thats why this person put the video up.
There is no sync with these scenes from the Wizard of Oz. The theme being portrayed in these scenes have absolutely nothing to do with the lyrics or the music of Us And Them. Claims that there is a correlation are hogwash or gibberish.
Its the movie and the album. That there are claims. Never said it was intended.
This video is distracting. It has nothing to do with this song. ❤
This is a lot off rubbish any music can be synced to anything if your clever enough and frankly it takes away from the whole concept of the song and the album the film clip isn't even in sync with the music the lyrics and the music say it all so many people out there with weird conspiracy theories the lights are on but nobody's home. Maybe I should sync the carpenter's music to a clockwork orange a brilliant movie.
I get it! Its a theory thats apparently been out there since 1995.
Its quite reassuring that conspiracys have been around forever. Nothing new
Stupiendo. BS. Song & Vid don't go together. Waysted my Thyme.
I just go by the request from the viewers. Enjoy the rest of your thyme
Why the silly and irrelevant video?
That was the request.
The wizard of OZ connection is nonsense, I have never heard of that before 🤔
I have been a PF fan for over 50 yrs& this has always been in my top 5 fav’s ❤️🙏
Its a theory thats been around since 1995 apparently.
But the song is beautiful! Will also check out the Pulse version.
