  • Yet more footage from May Day 2013! There's not much left in the can now, here we have one of my final sequences from 6th May 2013.
This shows GM 146 shunting the locos in the yard. First, diesels A39 and G617 are coupled up. Then they all couple to O&K steam locomotive No. 1, and haul her out of the shed to be prepared for the day's activities. The diesels are then hauled out to the station before being stabled in the yard.

You flatter me, Bob. Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed this. It's worth going the extra mile for this sort of thing, my goal is to keep a proper record that people can look back on in years to come - with good sound, and no wobbles!

Your camera work is excellent, Mike! My father was a motor trade man and when I was a little girl we had an excursion in the Deutz works near Cologne. It was round about 1983. I would not have thought that A39 has a diesel four-stroke engine... Thanks a lot for all your uploads, kind regards: Tina, an enthusiast for 30 years

Thanks Tina! Deutz was a strange partner for Irish Railways, but I think they didn't want to order from England for political reasons. Glad you like the videos I upload, it's great to find rail fans from all around the world!

Hello Mike! That´s what I thought the Irish/German and all though the Irish/American joint ventures were used to be: for those political reasons - wasn´t it the choice of another track size in Eire, too? The Russian Tsar had the same idea for his new built railway in the 19th century! To make it hard to the invasor using the rail´s material. It´s a pleasure to me I found an Irish enthusiast I can write to and excuse my bad English, please - I´m out of school for more than 20 years...

Heh heh... For reference, I enjoyed it a LOT. :) Behind the scenes, all-day access to a preserved railway? 2 or 3 cab rides? I pretend that this is serious work... I'm having a blast!

A bit easier to shunt with 146 than A39 the high power in notch 1 in the A class was a problem. The load regulators were changed in the 1980s they were not bad up to that.

This is why Johnny prefers shunting with 146 then. :) He was given the A class on the day of a huge shunt, I think it was just Norman being cruel to him!

Going in against an lone carriage out from the buffer was hair raising with the A class.

Tom Ryan LOL... I can imagine. Over this past year spent at Downpatrick with their loco people, my respect for drivers has gone up immensely when I see the skills needed. Observing the shunt of an unbraked rake of wagons and coaches with the A was an experience.

... another question I have is - does NIR has got the same track gauge as CIE?
(It is 1600 mm methink) It is all though an interesting railway´s situation on the Eirean continent!

Five feet three inches, 5'3", or 1600mm. We refer to it as "five foot three", with bad grammar. :) We decided to go our own way when everyone else in UK and Europe went to one standard gauge!

I see - it remembers me to the decision of the former Russian Empire I´m very interested in, too. With a lovely German "Krombacher" I am saying sláinte mhaith to You in this moment... Oh - yes indeed it´s lovely!

They are fantastic little chain-driven shunting locos Tina. Bought by Irish Rail in the 1950s for shunting (switching) and branch line duties.
