I live in Lisbon the last four years. Everything you said is right-on. Except why are you looking in such expensive neighborhoods to live? A couple of Metro stops further and rents are 600-900 euros per month, 200K apts, nice neighborhoods, plenty to see and do, walk to everything. From the end of the Green Line way out where I live in Telheiras to Cais do Sodre is only 18 mins with stops. I've timed it. One will get enough time walking around Alfama and Bairro Alto no matter where they live in Lisbon. This is really a great city and I am so happy I moved here!

yes, we agree..there are plenty of other neighborhoods that we need to explore and I'm sure we'll find something more affordable.

I’ve been watching a lot of “retire abroad” videos lately and this is one of the best ones I’ve seen. I was lucky to visit Lisbon in 2019, so I definitely understand the appeal and why you think so highly of it. It’s on my short list but not sure I wanna start learning Portuguese since I’ve invested years into Spanish already. I saw your Valencia video and I was there a couple years ago so it’s in the running too. Great job 👏🏾

I've just started to watch, after first starting with your stay in Mazatlán. Since I have been living in Portugal since 1991 (teaching English but now retired) I thought it would be interesting to see what you had for this country. I am impressed. Not only do you show the sights but you also give a bit of the history. I like the fact that you write a description of the places you show. Very professional. One doubt though; if you filmed this in November 2020, why weren't you wearing masks? Yes, Guadalajara is cheaper and the climate is warmer. But, you also have more of the problems of a much bigger city. And I am sure Lisbon is much safer than Guadalajara. Plus you have all of Europe at your doorstep. For example, where we live, way up in the north, in Chaves, we can visit all of Galicia and its marvelous coastline, be in Madrid in three hours, the beaches of southern Spain and the Med in 8 hours, and drive to the French border in 6 hours. In addition to Portugal I also really enjoy Spain so we often travel to that country, which in terms of variety almost rivals Mexico. In Mexico, of course, you have a vast variety of climates and topography but you can only visit one country. There are two big advantages of living in Mexico: cost of living and the great food.

Thank you! We agree with you about the ease of moving around Europe and visiting different countries which is why we plan on having our next home base there. We've also been reading a lot about Eastern Europe lately and that they are welcoming to expats and have a 1 year tourist visa. Have you visited any countries there? By the way, we mentioned in the video that we were in Portugal last February because we wanted to visit during the coldest time of the year. We just didn't post the video until November.

    • @rayvogensen2983
      @rayvogensen2983 3 роки тому +1

@@SeekingParadiseBugs I must have missed that part in the video. Lisbon is a great city but not inexpensive anymore due to all the expats moving in. Our granddaughter was at the university there four years ago and her rent was much higher that in Porto or Braga. All those rich Chinese getting Golden Visas have really pushed up the price of rentals and a lot of people prefer to rent as airbnbs. As for Eastern Europe I have only been to Hungary and Czech Republic. The farther east you go the cheaper rents and overall costs get. Bulgaria and Romania might be interesting but you are not going to find people as open and friendly as the Mexicans. I lived in Guadalajara for six months and in Oaxaca for another 9 and I really miss all the great things in Mexico.

The main problem with Lisbon is the housing (insolation/heating and the prices). Overall I believe it is maybe one of the best places to retire/start family/vacation. @@SeekingParadiseBugs A lot of expats are choosing Setúbal. Very very good city no pollution by cars, with almost half of the price (houses/renting) of Lisbon. Great restaurants, very walkable and in the center you have all the stores you need. SEF (for your visa process), Finanças (for your taxes and NIF number), Electricity companies, Internet/cellphone companies, city hall (where the water company), everything in less than 5 minutes by walking distance. Great restaurantes, more cheap than in Lisbon and with the family vibe, the best beaches in Europe (praia dos galapinhos is one and Troia beaches you can travel by boat from Setubal crossing the sado river) this beach is where Madonna like to ride her horses.
But you have only 40 minutes by car from Lisbon crossing that bridge you mention in your video and a train its only 50 minutes, very good transportation from Setubal to Lisbon, a lot of Portuguese live in Setubal and work in Lisbon.
In one hour from Setúbal you can go to Lisbon airport using only public transportation.
I need to mention if you are resident in Portugal (need your NIF for have this option) you can buy your monthly pass for 40€/month and can use the train, Bus, boats, metro and trams (it's 30€/month for only the city of Lisbon, and it's 40€/month for metropolitan area of Lisbon, including Sintra and Setúbal it's a big area) for only 40€/month.

This is a weird question but you guys mentioned Lisbon is a really clean city compared to others you've been to. In Valencia, there's dog crap everywhere and people don't clean up after their dogs. Did Lisbon have this problem or no?

    • @SeekingParadiseBugs

We have the same issue here in Mexico and we are very conscientious about our own dogs so it is frustrating. It was not an issue in Lisbon and the surrounding areas we visited there. @@SeekingParadiseBugs For a Spanish speaker like Guillermo Valencia would be a better option of course. According to Expatistan the cost of living is about the same. I've been to Valencia a few times and I really liked it. It does have the advantage of warm-water beaches nearby. The water around Lisbon is cold, even in summer. It only warms up a bit when you get down to the Algarve.

    Hi. Very nice video.
You do make a least one factual error. The bridge in Lisbon is not the longest suspension bridge in Europe. At the time of publishing this video the Great Belt Bridge in Denmark was the longest suspension bridge in Europe with a span of 1624 meters. (Here in 2022 the the Turkish has completed the worlds longest suspension bridge with a span of 2023 meters (making it the only one with a span greater than 2 km). In fact the 25 of April Bridge is pretty short, only number 47 in the world with a span of just over 1000 meters.

@@SeekingParadiseBugs Yes, please go and visit Denmark, but mostly Copenhagen. If you come then I - for obvious reasons - recommend june or july.
I like your videos cos they are well produced and I like that you have clear criterias. Sadly Copenhagen (were I live) will not make your list since the weather is not good very good and since it is very expensive. Apart from those things Copenhagen is consistently ranged among the most livable cities in the world (no 1 by Monocle and no 2 by world livability index (The Economist Intelligence Unit) only second to Vienna :-)

Well-done! This concept of video is very interesting to watch.
I would just add a critic.
You guys are only talking in US dollars + imperial measurement.
As people on UA-cam aren't only from the States, I would suggest
    1) have both currencies (local + US)
    2) metric and imperial
    That's not much work....

Sad to say but lisbon is as expensive as a North American city now. A one bedroom is about 800 in the city. Setubal is an alternative. Don’t like suburbs. Prefer to stay in the United States if I had to reside there in the suburbs.

    • @SeekingParadiseBugs

Prices are definitely going up as many expats look to live in Lisbon. Setubal is definitely a great option not too far from Lisbon.

It's true that Portugal is a safe and cheap country, however you have to remember that Lisbon is actually quite expensive and quite unsafe in Portuguese terms. Almost all things are more expensive in Lisbon: for example, I pay like 40€ for a weekly shopping here, but if were in Lisbon I would pay around 60 to 70€. The same happens with restaurants: here I usually pay 15-20 per person and I eat very, very well. In Lisbon is almost impossible to pay less than 30 to 35€ per person, even in traditional restaurants!

@@biggestbrowneyes expensive, congested, crime ( not bad in relation to most of the world, but bad in Portugal) .
the best food , land marks and people are outside the big cities ( Lisbon and Porto) . You can get way more for the money , with the same access to anything you like by moving outside the large cities. Lisbon and porto became unaffordable to most people. The vast majority of people i know that moved to Portugal in the last few years, they lived in Porto or Lisbon for the first year and they all moved out of the big cities. It only takes a few times traveling around the country and you will choose to live out of the large cities.

Locals of any city where this happens in the world get frustrated. We have talked with local Portuguese citizens and immigrants that have been here for many years and it is a concern for everyone. We have never felt that they are upset with the actual people that are moving here though. Everyone seems to understand that people are just looking to live where they can enjoy a great quality of life and Portugal certainly has much to offer.
