Ironically enough, i got the "stop playing solos using scales" ad literally just after he did exactly that. I cooked google for such a travesty.
This blew my mind.
One of my biggest breakthroughs playing jazz was learning standards like "Take The A Train" and "Blue Bossa"
The more standards you learn, the better you get.
Yes indeed. They become 'standards' because they tend to embody the tonality and flow of the genre. So when you learn the standards, you immerse yourself in the core of the genre. After that... wow.

Scales were always there.. we discovered them, not created them. As far as I know they are heavily intertwined with the mathematics of the universe.

I just spent about 40 min watching this 21 min video, with lot's of "rewinds", being sure I understood the chords and the progression. I felt compelled to write with a thank you. I found your pacing, your casual relaxed tone, and the step by step progression from "level 1" to "level 7" to be great. I played along throughout, taking breaks to write down all the chords and labeling each note and its position in the scale on my paper, for full comprehension. Thank you for a great lesson!

This is much better and more effective than my $150 psychologist.
When I started the video it was in 1.5x speed and too quiet to hear the distortion of the music so I didn’t notice until Paul started speaking. My mind was absolutely blown for a second.
You can tell Paul's the real deal. Not one negative or indecent post.
Funny how these 2 gentlemen are so modest, while they are actual guitar geniuses. Fantastic video.
Never have I heard the major scale played with so much feeling. Incredible! It really goes to show that it’s all about the emphasis and feeling you put behind the notes that make them music
I love how much the melodies resolve to the next chord, and the way the jazzy melody resolution is both aurally predictable, but feels surprising when it is in context. Very neat way to take a C major scale, and providing all that color by moving through the progression. Thanks for the collab, I really enjoyed the banter and easy way you unpacked some very complex concepts that make it sound so simple when slowed down and explained.
The cool thing about you is that you seem like a genuinely good dude, who is confident enough in his own abilities as a player that you give your guests the space to showcase what they do. Not only recognizing, but also appreciating that their strengths and areas of expertise are different from your own
Acting as the “layman” (when you actually know the answers) is a really powerful teaching strategy. You are the “straight man” the comic to act off of.

You have to have Rotem on again! I have honestly watched this video multiple times a day for weeks; the sound is amazing. This tutorial feels like listening to music as I normally would from Spotify or Apple Music, only better as I can witness and appreciate the character of the artists. Excellent work man.
whatever I do on my guitar it's just rock pentatonics that comes out. But after watching this video something has changed. I give credit to you Paul and especially your guest Rotem. This is so naturally explained. Im getting a picture now of what jazz is all about and where I have to go if I am going to step into that way of playing. Thank you both guys!

This is a really cool format for learning a style. A little bit of theory and broad ideas, some examples, and then the different levels of complexity to gradually build practical familiarity. Love it, would love to see more of this!

J A Z Z GUY: I just played and thought about A-7
Often times when you improvise over a chord but with another chord's shape in mind you end up getting some really interesting sounds that you wouldn't normally think to play. It's a big thing I've started to realize learning Jazz (though I've also heard it elsewhere). For example loop a Cmaj7 chord and play over it thinking about the D major pentatonic. You'll find yourself hitting some really nice,unconventional notes because the Dmajor notes/shape sort of lead you into it.
N0rmad every minor chord, has a compatible pentatonic scale you can play with it,

I really love this convo style of someone explaining levels of difficulty of some genre or even their style of playing and thought process behind it.
It reminds me a little of Guitar Moves by Noisey but it seems that it was canceled for some reason and I miss it as hell.

This might be the best video on UA-cam for guitarists who are just getting their feet wet in jazz, or trying to incorporate a bit of jazz into their current playing style.
I love the dude from music theory for guitar, and Jens Larsen provides great resources, but nobody can break down ideas and make them digestible like Paul Davids. The perfect example was all the comments I saw on Rick Beato's compression video about being just as totally confused after watching the video as they were beforehand. I just told them all to check out Paul Davids compression video

This was perfect for my current study of jazz harmony. It really helped me connect the chord shapes with the topic of voice leading - which seemed a little alien to my rock background and hard to envision on the guitar.
Jazz Guitar is definitely not the easiest guitar style, but it can always be achieved! It's also very fundamental in learning theory to compose music more articulative.

i play guitar for 7years+, since when i was 15, but you explain some things that i not paid attention, a lot of musics here in brazil has this chords, i understand how to make them, but i never noticed the why. thanks for explain. great class. great teatcher.
