More of these types of videos, please. Jazz can be overwhelming compared to rock and blues. Anything that makes it simpler is what we need.
There'll be a lot more of these in the new year! Thanks for being a memeber and happy holidays!
Best jazz guitar instructor on UA-cam- relaxed delivery, accessible arrangements, gigantic volume of material
It would be interesting to see some videos on arranging popular songs for fingerstyle jazz guitar!
Thank you! I do some chores melody using fibers, but I film not into fingerpicking.
Went through this lesson again...so much valuable info in this one. One of your best! 👏👏👏
I love your approach to teaching. Appreciate you so much.
Thanks for the valuably insights. What a great concept. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Brilliant! I've never realized that there are compatible chords and modes. This changes everythign. Thanks so much, dear Sandy!
The pleasure's all mine. Glad to be of help :-)
SOLD!! A great place to start - Thank you!!
Sititng here with a stunned look on my face - it's so simple and obvious; talk about 'one ring to rule them all' - it's brilliant! Need more!!!
This Lesson is so rich yet so self-contained and digestible, props! I hope to see more videos like this!
Thabks so much! I'll definitely post more tutorials like that the next year.
A lot of upper Midwest US women have your accent. Nice jazz playing. I'll play this video 20 times, and it might soak in.
Oh, I didn't know that. I always wanted to sound like a real American, not like Arnold Schwarzenegger 😁. I'm half American, but grew up in Austria, speaking German only.
Thank You!
I find it very helpful to see information from as many perspectives as possible so videos like this are very helpful. 👍🏻
Very true! It's great to view things from different angles. It completes the picture.
Thanks Sandra! Others have already said it here, but this kind of simplification helps not getting bogged down analyzing the theory. I also like learning the theory but tips like this are what allow me to put it into action and move ahead right now. Love it!
Glad this is helpful 😊. I'll post more of this in the new year. Thabks for your support, Brian!
Happy holidays!
This was an eye opener for me. Rewatching and you're so good!
So glad it's helpful,
You are a really good good teacher. Excellent information!
Glad it's helpful 😊
You are very special, dear Sandra. Thank you for sharing your wealth of experience and knowledge with us so willingly. Blessings to you and your loved ones.
Thank you, Luis! ❤️ You've been an absolute highlight in my life this year. Thank you for all your mental and financial support. You always have such nice words for me 🤗. I hope you'll have a wonderful Christmas time with your family. My thoughts are with you.

You are really something!!
Few can impart your enthusiasm with immediately useful material!
Hope something good 😊
What a joy to see and hear you
Awh, thank you 🤗
Wow......its so clear ....I am trying on chords superimposition for months.....thank you very much
Glad it was helpful!
I never thought learning to solo (jazz) could be so difficult. Not your teaching, of course, just the topic itself. Thanks for the vid.
Great job on this video! Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Always a pleasure seeing you Sandra. Merry Christmas and thanks for sharing. Take care.
Thabks, my friend! Happy holidays! 🎄 🎅
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman Hey Sandra, I just bought your start pack from your website. which order do you recommend me to start learning?
Finally, one of the " Pandora Box " jazz scales for improvisation has been revealed for me. Thank you Sandra.
Glad it helped you!
Wow!
I have so many ideas and see music clearer after watching this!
This might be one of the most useful videos I've seen in a long time.
So much stuff can be extrapolated from this and applied elsewhere.
And I do not even play Jazz... but I suspect that I will soon...
THANKS!
Your comment really makes me happy. Because I want to simplify Jazz for ylu guys. And seeing that this video does exactly that makes me happy and a little proud. I hope you'll keep looking into the jazz world, bc there are many thibgs that'll improve your playing also in other genres.
Thank you very much for this kind of content 🙏🙏
Happy New year 🎸🎸😃😃
Happy new year! 🥂
Thank you for these videos!
Glad it's helpful 😊
Awesomeness!!! ❤❤❤
Great lesson.
I really love your style. No nonsense and to the point.
I would really request a lesson on the different rhythms used in jazz soloing. That's an area that is a weak point for many.
Funny you mention rhythm. I just finnished a lesson on that.
right from the new sound world! Congrats.😀
Thanks! 😃
Very useful as always. Thanks a lot! 👍🍷
Glad you enjoyed it!
It's fantastic how you clear my confused musical mind 😁. Best teacher!!!
Happy to help!
Gracias Sandra y Felicisades
Felicudades, ny friend 🎄 🎅
Why is it I understand almost everything you teach, while I don't with other teachers. Your tutorials are awesome and so are you ❤❤❤.
Happy to help! ☺️
Grrrreetings from Michigan!
Excellent tutorial 😊
Thank you! 😊
Olá Sandra Sherman! Parabéns pela aula! Saúde e paz! Hello Sandra Sherman! Congratulations on the class! Health and peace!
Muita obrigada! Merry Christmas!
Thank you so much for your videos. I am a blues rock guitar player who loves jazz. Larry Carlton is the one that helped me get into jazz playing but its a little more blues playing that I want with jazz. I have a Gibson 335 which is my jazz guitar with a Fender Twin. Your videos are very helpful. I love your Heritage guitar and hope you were able to correct some of the issues.
Welcome to the jazz ride on my channel 🤗. Check out the Jazz-Blues playlist! I'm sure there's a lot for you in there.
Excellent lesson Sandra... This answered many questions for me, and I had several "lightbulb" moments as well. BTW I like your hair!
Yay, that's the goal for me. To give you those light bulb moments. Sometimes it takes several angles to view a topic from until the bulb turns on. Happens to me all the time. So I'm happy this video was part of that help for you.
Good video. Thanks kindly for your effort.
Glad it was useful 😊
great, Sandra, even I got it now - I like your tutorials cause even I understand all... 😉
So happy to hear, Tom 😊
Thanks!
Thank you for your donation! I highly appreciate it ❤️. Have a happy and creative new year!
Amazing! Liked! Subbed! Shared! Thanks! Cheers! And greetings from Scotland! 🌀🙏🏽🤍🍻🏴
Awesome, thank you! ❤️
Hi Sandra… nice lesson! I always enjoy how you strip down the layers to what actually works👍😁. Chord tones - big check! Modes - well, my favorite mode is Airplane mode 😂… but, seriously, as you eloquently point out, a lot of it is the same😁! B Locrian … D Dorian … etc. Thanks for pointing all this out to us!
Airplane mode 😂😂😂
Why does this make so much sense ...its disturbingly good and so much more easier to remember the the theory behind it all. yea thanks
I like to visualize things, bc sometimes it's easier too see the relationships than to just theoretically understand them. Glad my concept was helpful 😊.
Thanks for this, great stuff. Suscribed!
Thanks for the sub! Enjoy the jazz ride on my channel 😊
Look at the second group. If you raise the root note of the ionian scale (c to c# in this case) you get all the relevant melodic minor scales:
II chord: melodic minor
V chord: lydian b7 (aka mixolydian #11)
VII chord: locrian 9
IV lydian augmented
and also the altered scale over the tritone sub: Db7 chord
Fascinating stuff!
Thank you Sandra for this helpful video. Merry Christmas and a happy new year!
Indeed! Good point 👍
Happy holidays 🎄
Wow! What a cool hack, I will also try this.
Awesomeness..❤❤❤
Thanks, Save, my diligent jazz bee 😊. Have a merry Christmas!
I knew it! I've practiced a lot, all these scales - I wished I had watched this tutorial earlier... 😉 thanks, Sandra 👍🏻
It's always good to view things from multiple perspectives. You didn't learn those scale in vain 😉.
It's always good to view things from multiple perspectives. You didn't learn those scale in vain 😉.
No but I'm overwhelmed by how awesome that shirt is
😊 🦙🦦
I take alwayes the Major Seven Arpeggio with Minor notes and it works alwayes 😉
Thanks
Thanks for the donation! ❤️
Love your stuff! Danke Schatzi! PS: You're looking very well.
Thank you! 😃
Hi Sandra! My "secret" purpose with studying your material is to become more aware of a broader scope of musical forms and to appreciate Jazz at a deeper level. Why? Because my hope is to have better understanding of Django's music. My repertoire is mainly Spanish, South American, Cuban, Mexican and the 18th / 19th century classical French / Viennese schools. I'll probably never be a a Jazz musician per se, but I can become more educated as to what it is that I love about Jazz.. You're really helping me get there. Thank you schatzi!@@GuitarversumSandraSherman
Great Lesson, thanks. What are your thoughts on the Em7 chord?
Em7 goes perfectly well over Cmaj, but not the other way round. That's why I didn't list it as fully compatible.
Your contact is great. I am a guitar teacher, but I don’t focus as much on jazz. So this is awful for me or if I ever have any students that want to go deeper in jazz. God bless !
Bedankt
Thank you for your donation! ❤️ Glad this video helped 😊.
Your lesson seems quite clear and easy to follow. By the way what is the Guitar you have in this session?
That's a Heritage 575.
I would wish that there is a teacher like you in my city who can explain all those things to me in my language. I would take lessons emediatly 😅👍
You can take Skype or Zoom lessons with me 😊. Just write to shermanlessons at gmail dot com.
@@GuitarversumSandraShermanhi there, how much would these lessons cost?

Sandra-
At 14:09 when you say that the chromatic note should be on the "...off beat...", is your (tapping) foot in the up or the down position? Also, are you counting in 1 and 3 or 2 and 4?
Thank you very much.
Foot is on all 4 quarter downbeats and goes up in between on the offbeats. If your advanced the foot can do the backbeat (2 and 4)
hope you get to try out an Eastman T-184 one o' these days...smaller but powerful, like yourself.
Hehe. Smalleer, but powerful 😍
Is that the 175 clone?
No. It's a small 335, but it's all solid woods, ebony board, 25 " scale, and it's slightly larger than a Les Paul. It's like they designed it for you. It's light too. You have to play one.@@GuitarversumSandraSherman
Besides the Chord Melody bundle I bought recently I thought it would be a good idea to learn Jazz right from the beginning. Does the starter pack bundle cover all important aspects like comping, soloing, rhythm etc.?
Regards, Michael
There is no rhythm bundle un there. I'm working on that. There are several compung lessons in the varilus bundles. You should start with my chord and Comping playlist.
1) 7th Chord System (incl. free Chord PDF!)
2) Jazz Comping
3) Tension Chords
Just type these keywords and add "guitarversum" to find them, lr go directly to said playlist.
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman Sure that's a good starting point! But nevertheless I'll make the bundle my second Christmas gift 😉 I will need it anyways and your lessons are the best available on the subject, clear and easy to follow! 👍
Thank you! Have a merry Christmas time and enjoy your gift 😊🎄🎁
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman Thank you, merry Christmas to you as well!
I need your boots and your motorcycle........and your Dm7augdim chord right now.
Hehe 😊. You can have tje dim chord, but not my bike 😂
@GuitarversumSandraSherman merely a corny joke on my part, but as a comic in all seriousness, thanks for the videos. It's all above my head as a purposefully self taught musician, but I appreciate how you tell how chords relate to each other (which I sort of already knew in principle), but especially how you can change a chords voicing to use it as a set-up passing chord so you can use it as a springboard to highlight certain facets of the next chord that otherwise would not be readily apparent. Sort of like changing the lighting shining on an object in a visual sense. A red object being perceived differently depending on what light it's being showcased under. Same object, but it looks different. You have good examples for the luddite pluckers of strings like myself.
Interesting metaphor 😊. Thanks!
she is a Master
She thanks you 😊
Hi, Sandra. I’ve been enjoying your videos. I’d love to support the channel and get some of your material but the PayPal confirm payment button isn’t working on your store, in case you were not aware. I’m in the US, using a Mac and have tried Chrome and Safari.
We have no such complaints and I see orders coming in from all over the US. Maybe your card isn't being accepted. It's definitely between you and Paypal, not between Paypal and my merchant account. Unfortunately these things happen often, bc there are so many variables. The way it always works is to transfee money to your paypal account and pay with the Paypal wallet function.
Hi Sandra! I'm confused, supposedly I'm a member of your chanel. Do I have access to the the tabs of this lesson or not? If not, where is it?
Thanks for your support! No, the Tabs are not i cluded in the membership. There are 130 Mini Lesdpns (incl Tabs) in the membership area.
Tabs have to ve purchased in my Online Shop. There's a link in the info box, below the video.
Dear Sandra, this Mini lessons have not much sense to me. I rather buy your bigger bundles. Thus, please cancel my membership as it is now. Thank you. @@GuitarversumSandraSherman
I can't do that, bc I have no access to yout UA-cam account. You need to cancel it yourself. Ckick ylur own avatar and select memberships. Click mine and unsubscribe.
PS: The membership is more of a support to keep the free videos running.
what about the iii chord, is that part of the 1 vi group
Yes, but you can't play a Cmaj7 arpeggio over Em7. Only works the other way round.
Great, chord 3 Em7 was not included in the 2 groups. Why this is so .
Because it is only one way compatible. It goes over Cnaj7, but Cnaj6 doesn't for over Em7.
👍👍👍❤
Nice---Thankyou for the music. I am Rainbow man, Roy Reginald Patrick D'Souza, son of John Filipe D'Souza. My mother's name is Ludy Regina Lousia D'Souza, and Sheena, our pet Cat, who is one of us.
did you leave out the iii?
The iii is comoatible with the I chord, but unfortunately not the other way roubd. So you can play an Em7 arpeggio ovet Cmaj 7 (=Cmaj9), but nit a Cmaj7 over an Em7 (woukd add the b6 to the Em7, which isn't a great note for a minir chord).
vosion rids taft
I don’t see any ‘info box’ ?
Below the video, where the description text of the video is, there's a "... more" or little arriw. Click it to unfold the box.
Where's the information box?????
Either right below the video or to the roght side (if youre6on a tablet I think). There's the title of this video and next to it is either "show more" or a little arrow to unfomd the compnete info box (officially called "description box"). There you'll find all my links and info text.
Sandraaaaa
Long time I heard from you, Dragan. Where have you been? 😊
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman I love you Sandra
Good improv, to me, seems like scat singing via guitar using scales. But I'm no expert!
Why in 1 & 6 not include 3 ?
Because Em goes over Cmaj, but not the other way round. I wanted to make it fool proof. But you can, of course, use Em licks over Cmajor.
Saaandraaa
I would find this much more helpful if you spelled out the chords on a staff!!
I would find it much more helpful if you purchased the Tab from the info box, so I can continue to post FREE videos 😉
Seriously, you don't think there's any use in, the more the merrier, when it comes to scales?
I just want o simplify jazz for beginners. Of course there are also other scales, esoecially the altered scale, you need. But with this sysrem you can already play through mlst major key songs.
started well, then went waffling in order to show your incredible knowledge and superiority. Bye bye.
What? How? When? Please let few know more details, so I can improve my teaching style. I never show off my skills, bxmc it's all about the stiffen. So this crutique really surprises me.
First of all.
What is chromatic?
A chromatic is a tone, that us not in the scale. Let's say you're in C major, the C# is a chromatic note, because C# does not belong to the C major scale. Tones that are in a scale are called scale tones or diatonic.
oh no no no!, if your a jazz person you need at least 37 scales + the ionian fully diminshed dbl flatted 13 harmonic third inversion scale- .........................because you are a jazz person and you know the key of H
😁
Too complex for a you tube lesson! Nice sounds though!
That's actually a lesson to make things easier. But my channel is a jazz channel. Maybe you need to work out some basics first, because this lesson is really as easy as it gets.
scales are for fishes, isn't?
That's like saying, the alphabet it unnecessary to read. You always play scales. You're maybe just not aware of it.
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman it is called sarcasm hahahahh chill i know my scales i study music.
damn, jazz cats used to be cool and chilled
LOL. I get some strange comments, so you need to mark it as sarcasm, bc unfortunately most people would write stuff like that and mean it dead serious 😂.
@@GuitarversumSandraShermanno way??? well, everything is possible on the internet.
i do know my scales however, i never think about them when playing.
and yes, fishes have scales too :P
