It's absolutely unreal to me how easy you're making this. Your brain's teaching style lines up so perfectly with my learning style, I swear I learned more from this 13 minute video than I have from hours and hours of other instructor's videos.
The succinctness and economy of this lesson, combined with the amount of information therein, and imparted in a such a relaxed manner, is really impressive. Thank you very much Howard.
This is really to the point plus it lends itself to those of us who are dependent on our ear to sort it all out. Plus one talk and play at the same time. Love the not so twangy Telecaster. What a great tone. Thank you!
Вот только сейчас Ютубе вывел меня на Ваш ролик))) Большое спасибо за Труд!!! Такой короткий ролик, но в нем столько информации - сколько я на других платформах не видел!!! Подача шикарная!!!
This is amazing, thank you for this! Been working on triads lately and this just ties it all together. Have been trying to understand what I’m playing instead of just remembering shapes and it’s opened up a lot. But for this i feel like I might have to start off memorizing the shapes (some are easier than others because they are small tweaks of typical barre chords) thanks again!
That last example of showing the power of inversions really opened my mind to how powerful they are! Totally changes the tone even though it's the same sequence.
This is the best guitar lesson I've ever seen on youtube. Thank you! Its just soo useful and easy to follow. I can also feel the love you have for teaching guitar. Lovely!!
Hey hombre, I hear a lot of those chords in tejano bands, now I know where they got them from, jazz! My compliments on your playing you're way up there on the ladder of talent.
To be honest with you, I think I was a better player when I was in the garage and only knew about blues scales, and only knew about them because I figured out songs from the radio by ear. Then I was in a big band in college, and the music was so complicated, and I really had no idea what it was supposed to sound like. Whatever it was, it wasn't the kind of music I listened to. It was OK but now, 40 years later, I am going back to the basics. Eddie Van Halen and Angus Young.
Ciao. Antonello I've always seen jazz as a difficult and broad genre. I studied modern guitar for three years and I love blues and country/rock. Obviously I faced jazz languages similar to blues, but both the methods and my last teacher didn't help me enhance my skills! Some have a "divine" gift of playing by ear repeating everything (Montgomery, Benson for example in jazz!) (Van Halen and Bolin in rock!) but most of us, myself first and foremost, have to study in order to understand! I want to follow your lessons because I like your teaching approach. I hope to improve in this magnificent musical language! HI. Antonello
Hey man- I've been playing guitar for over 4 decades. I play by feel and don't really think at all about what I am doing (hard to explain) . I know all the chords and scales but I've never really put the names together if you know my meaning. This answers some questions. Thanks!
Probably not that many people knows Prefab sprout. They play a lot of jazz progressions perhaps you should try on of their songs for a cover thanks for this lesson.
Thank you very much for this video which clears up everything. Just a little question of understanding. In the exercise we are in C major or when you make the GMaj7 chord at 9:45 there is a note that makes up the chord that is not found in the C major scale. Could someone explain this to me please? The note is D string 4th fret. This would help me a lot to understand things. Thank you so much for this excellent video.
Hi - At that point in the video, I'm simply showing the different ways to play Major 7th chords, as they are so important in the Jazz world. But as covered earlier in the video, G7 is the chord belonging to the key of C Major. I hope that helps :-)
Hate comments like this that are completely meaningless in many ways. The biggest reason comments like these are made because these are made by those who don’t play. There are huge difference between jazz music listeners and players. For those who play just listening won’t do. They will have to listen to it enough times that they can copy it with their instruments. Sounds good saying start with liking and listening. For playing that’s meaningless and this guy has no idea.
Ok I’m on “crazy” spectrum of things I dive into the deep end and figure it out while I’m floating, this shi looks absolutely confusing however I see the relative speaking’s thru music theory but I’m still confused. Guitar hero helps me visualize tabs better and finger placement/strengthen but geez I feel like Clapton, Hendrix and the rest of the non readers that can’t read the sheets but I’m good at patterns so I’m not stressing too bad. The legends before me give me hope because reading is insanity. Feel free to comment because I’m starting at my notebook Dorian = mode Harmonic minor = scale 7 flat keys 7 sharp keys 1 that’s none C That’s all I got folks tune in on the next episode of my musical finding
Only thing that's messing me up 3:20 G maj dominant 7. The chords listed are G-D-F-B. F isn't part of a G Major scale. it looks like the F# (7th note in the Gmajor scale) is moved up a half step to F. Why is the note on the B string moved up the neck board to F and not E? I dont get that part because F isn't part of the G Major scale once again. Clearly I'm missing something. THanks for the video - very informative and good way to look at things My only explanation I can find is that F is part of a C Major scale so maybe I"m looking at it wrong by bringing the G Major scale into play just because the G in a C Major scale is a major chord (G is the 5th in C Major scale I beleive)
Hi - Yes, the lesson utilizes the Key of C Major... No flats or sharps. For the key of G Major, the chord sequence would be Gmaj7 - Am7 - Bm7 - Cmaj7 - D7 - Em7 - F#m7b5
Awesome stuff. Love the 7ths. You covered a lot of the important basics that make jazz fun. Thank you.
Great clarity. Fast and slow. Thank you for making it so accessible!!
This has to be, one of the most important, and best lessons, for beginners. Thank you so much.
Great Lesson. You are an OUTSTANDING Teacher!!
Nice first lesson Howard. Yeah, I definitely have to spend some time on those arpeggios.👍🏼
Killin it - very helpful and laid out in a way I have not seen before. Get to work here --thanx!
Interesantisimo entrar en lecciones de jazz. Muchas gracias maestro.
I learned a lot from this video. The practical value is enormous and the theory is accurate. Thank you.

Wow, thank you so much. I'm glad you enjoyed it :-)
I also learned so much from this short video than I have ever learned from other instructors.
The succinctness and economy of this lesson, combined with the amount of information therein, and imparted in a such a relaxed manner, is really impressive. Thank you very much Howard.

Mr.Howard thank you so much for good lessons....
Thanks for teaching you show all the 7maj chords very easy to understand on the guitar fretboard
love this, and that last chord progression is very catchy
That last example of showing the power of inversions really opened my mind to how powerful they are! Totally changes the tone even though it's the same sequence.
I am what youd call an advanced beginner. I am here to find a nice roadmap for my learning. I like how you synthecize complicated aspects.

Step #1: Like jazz music and listen to jazz music.

@@tizmonAgree, these cliche responses are attempts at being "pithy." They are, unfortunately, everywhere on UA-cam
In a way he’s right, but also practice jazz should be added to that comment
Very Very good
If you don’t like jazz you legitimately don’t have a valued opinion towards the video.
Cool
nice
❤️❤️
GRAZIE
Thank you watch
On the E arpeggio, when you played fast, it sounds like you played some extra notes going back down the scale.
Great video! Looks like tab for Am7 shows 7th fret on high E string but you play 5th fret?
Hi - Thanks for watching... Most likely a type-o :-)
Lovely...done subscribe😂
Um...Wow!
What are the modes that are tabbed next to the arpeggios?
The Modes are covered in more detail as you move into Parts 2, 3 and 4 :-)

Nice ! Howard how about an Allman Brothers lesson, maybe Jessica. Thanks
Great suggestion!
Good , do you have rock lessons too ?
Hi - Yes... You can find lots of Rock on my channel :-)
What is the B chord from this video?
It's a Bm7b5 - Or half diminished :-)
The Last step into a new beginning 💪
Only thing that's messing me up
3:20
G maj dominant 7. The chords listed are G-D-F-B.

Am7 arpegio tap is wrong !
