Buying less expensive mods does not mean the vehicle was not take care of. 99% of Jeeps i see all done up are "Pavement Princesses". Guys build them up to look cool, with no intention of ever going off road. They are normally babied and meticulously maintained. You dont need top dollar mods to do that. Any one buying a Jeep to go off road knows what they are looking for...
Pavement princesses? Are people not allowed to buy cars they find interesting or fun unless they are some redneck who goes off-roading with their male friends every weekend in a very suppressed homosexuality type way
S gives me hope. Mine 09 has been plaques by issues. Now my ABS module has failed at 127000 kilometers and there are none available right across Canada and they are not allowed to send one from the USA. I would never by a Jeep again.
Best tip for buying a new jeep with the 3.6…..CHECK CHECK CHECK the engine oil cooler. Make sure it isn’t leaking because that’s gonna be the most common issue. Shine a light down from the top on the left side of the engine (closest to you) and see if there is a puddle of oil. If so, you’re gonna have a 400 dollar fix then and there.
Cheaped out cause they went with rough country 😅 I've had over 10 offroad vehicles and ran rough country zero complaints performed just as good as the higher dollar lifts .. and I dont baby my jeeps
I’ve learned my lesson about not checking under a used vehicle before I buy it, bought a used Honda civic, got it home and the whole undercover was coming off. No take backs because it was purchased used…. Great video!
Same here. It just aggravates me because this dealership had to know that mine was leaking. It was on the lot for 30 days. You can't tell me they didn't see some drips underneath there because I only had it for one day and I could see drips in my driveway. I made the mistake of falling in love with it 💕 and not doing my due diligence. 🤷
This video is lowkey a lifesaver, I wish I had taken the time to find something or come across the content of a video like this before I had bought my Jeep. Spent over a year and 1/2 on repairs/waiting for part shipments. Great vid!

I have a 2015 2 dr sport soft top, garage kept since new. About 12,500kms on the odo.. gets annual service but not much use. It's a 2nd vehicle, or 6th is more like it. My daily driver is a van then there's 4 MCs I prefer riding to the jeep, but it is cool. 😙
Good information for the new guys took me 4 years to decide on which jeep I wanted got a low mile 98 tj that had no mods been building it up ever since.
Thanks for the video I have a 12 jk sport and I took care of the maintenance accordingly. I have had to replaced the poorly designed oil cooler, leaking axle seals, faulty poorly designed dual stage oil pump, death wobble and replaced steering stabilizer. I reported these problems while under warranty and Chrysler/Dealer just gave me the run around until I was over the warranty. I’m sure not all jeeps are like mine. It is a really good idea to do your homework. Thanks
I have owned Jeeps of various models since 1972, most of which I purchased used with low milage. My one new Wrangler was a soft top which I regret for numerous reasons to include the dreaded front-end wobble and someone cutting through the plastic window in the back to steal stuff. The most fun was a pre-1950 Willy with no top that I explored the Southwest deserts in. When looking at any vehicle to purchase, I always want a second set of eyes, preferably with mechanical experience, to spot the good and the bad that I might not otherwise. And yes, I agree with looking at the underside first and foremost.

I once bought a 2010 Rubicon jku manual transmission. It was scratched up, basic terraflex 3 inch lift, no leaks at all just very flighty steering, that was corrected by adding aftermarket control arms because it still had stock control arms with a lift.
08 wrangler x unlimited from a dealer that was got at auction. It was one owner government jeep. Well-ish maintained and the interior was pristine and a winch. The underside was clean or oeaks 3:213:24

I looked at wranglers online and on FB for over a year. Read forums and watched UA-cam videos. I only drove one. The one I bought. A 2021 wrangler JL sport with rubicon wheels. 21k miles turbo 2.0L. Lease return. Convertible top. Towing package. It's not my main driver. It will be used for fun and towing the atv. No power windows or locks. The towing package was more important than PW and PL.
Car fax is nice but I have found multiple jeeps that we took to mechanics before we bought and they find issues not on the car fax. Have an external mechanic check it out, even if you buy from a dealership. If they won’t let you, then don’t buy from them.

Known for gaskets leaks. Get underneath and check for fluid leaks at rear main and oil pan.... also known for window regulator failures, so be sure to check all power windows for correct operation. Otherwise... the normal stuff, like wear and tear, drivability, weird noises. Those kinda things. Good luck!
Oh no, you described me in this video.....I saw a Jeep on a premium car lot and wanted it! I did not shop around, other than knowing prices of models on the used market. I wish I had watched this first. The good news.... it was a babied leased vehicle.... one of six owned by a family. According to the salesman it was the dog transporter and never taken off road. I did look underneath for obvious dents. It does smell of dog ;)
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a jeep soft top that fits snug on the back. My TJ, LJ, and JK all have had a gap at the tailgate. If the soft top is a sun rider, make sure the cable is still intact. My JK cable snapped. I have the replacement but haven’t fixed it yet.
I’m sure some people regularly change the oil themselves since jeeps are easy to get under. Carfax wouldn’t see this of course. I even jack up my low to the ground ford fusion and change it.
I would say that depends on where you live or where the Jeep has been. If you’re around the city, it’s more likely that they don’t change the oil themselves. Carfax isn’t perfect by any means, but can give you a better idea of how it was taken care of. I would use it more to see how many owners there has been. Not a perfect method, but if it’s had a lot of different owners, then it could mean that it’s had a lot of issues.
If it looks well taken care of, and proof of no real abuse, oil leaks, worn or broken parts... as far as I am concerned miles don't matter in the decision process. But miles DO matter in the selling price. So balance it. 😉
I'm going to say that it's directly related to upkeep. In the 4 years I've had my '13 JK I've more than doubled the miles that were on it at delivery so I feel I can attest. Go full synthetic. 🇺🇲🛻
There is absolutely nothing wrong with a Jeep that has scratches underneath from off-roading. When I get under the vehicle I’m looking for rust or broken parts. Drag marks just let me know it’s had a fun time.
Rough Country lifts are not cheap. They may be in price but not in actual usage. Im so tired of that narrative. Cheap doesn't always mean cheap and expensive doesn't always mean the best.
What’s the best ones? Been looking at some but I don’t know the difference tbh I’m trying to learn more so I can build it nice. I go camping a lot and off roading occasionally when I go shooting
I im looking at a jeep right now and want to know if the rear backing plate is a problem i should be Worried about Reoccurring or just a one or should I keep looking at other jeeps
Based on experience, working in a jeep service department, the 3.6 may have its issues, but it's tried and true. More common, also means better long term parts support. The 2.0 is to reliant on a turbo for power, and I've seen to many fail because of it. So for long term, overall cost of ownership, the 3.6 is my choice
I wish I had seen this video 2 weeks ago. I bought my 2011 Sport, 2 door, 6 speed hardtop running 33's on a 2" suspension lift from a Cadillac dealer- and got screwed. Leaking differential, leaking axle seals, gas leak. They HAD to know that these were issues just from seeing the fluids on the ground underneath. Got a decent deal on it, but 2K worth of work being done now. 😡
That really sucks my man I am sorry to hear that. If you have any other issues ( I hope you don't) let me know because a lot of times they are easy fixes at your own home for A LOT cheaper and I can walk you through it. Nonetheless, I hope its driving ok now and you are enjoying it
We got screwed too when we bought our Jeep in June. However, we absolutely love it. My husband is a wrench turner and good at figuring things out. The electrical issues are rough but fixable with a lot of research and patience.
Even if you "don't know what you're looking at," as long as you don't go off saying that, you can potentially squeeze some truth out of a salesman. If the lot personnel get nervous from you just having an in-depth look, let that be a red flag you don't ignore!
This reminds me when I was trying to trade my 1960 Rambler American Super. I was car hunting and found a beautiful Isuzu Trooper, that was super clean no tears in the seats and just well taken care of. But upon hearing east coast car, I looked at the trailer hitch as I was going to look under it and there almost was nothing left. underneath made you think original Trooper not 01 Trooper... it was that bad.
If you are particular like me, DON'T even try to by a used Jeep. I have tried for about two years. The ones that I was interested, either sold faster than I could pick up the phone, or priced ridiculously high, to almost new prices. So after two years of looking, I have resigned and ordered a new one. The only regret that I have is having not ordered it to begin with. 2017 JK Rubicon.
Take another person and have them move steering back and forth then you can see if steering or suspension needs work. You should reach down and pull on belt tensioner. I would expect better bolts on the control arms for 33k. And look at the track bar mount. Make sure there is no movement bacl and forth where track bar mounts to axle.
I bought a jeep with similar equipment being equal all are JL williys 2 door. Out of 3, one was off roaded as evidenced by scratches on the side and under body. I bought the one that was never off roaded. Prices were equal. I want to be the one that puts those scars 😊
I prefer teraflex for suspension. I think they make a great product, and stand behind it. Ran their 4.5 inch kit on my first JK, their 2.5" kit on my last JK as well....
Jeeps are POS that rust, break, paint falls off (literally), etc. etc. etc. etc. Buy at your own risk. Unless you know what you are doing and can afford it.
I bought a Jeep JK a few months ago. I was aware to avoid Jeeps that were domiciled in Northern States and Coastal areas, due to rust issues. I was focused on Jeeps with less than 60,000 miles, garaged in a Southern state, not modified and no evidence the Jeep was taken off road or involved in any accidents. I examined over 500 Jeeps for sale on line before I found what I was looking for. It was a one owner, locally owned, that was in showroom condition inside and out. It’s Maintenance record indicated the previous owner changed the oil and filter every 4000 miles at the same dealership. I was lucky to find exactly what I was looking for.
I’m watching this in November 2022. In my area of Oklahoma I’m seeing a lot of used Wranglers and Gladiators from 2020. Is there a particular problem with the 2020 models that I should be looking for?
I wish i found this video dooner. I bought a 2011 jeep wrangler 2 door. Jk series. From a family member. The jeep has problems. All it seen was highway. The jeep has leaking transpan, front dif, front driver side axel seal, weak sway bar links, weak suspension, and a weak steering stabilizer and i have to also replace the rear track bar... so much money. But it's gonna be worth it in the end. Hopefully. I dont plan on going off road. Im gonna use to pull a small trailer. Maybe some fun down some old shallow two tracks, and dirt roads. But that about it. I got because its like a fiat. But taller and bigger and more fun to drive.
Carfax is not 100%. My first car was a Corolla and it had a clean carfax. Any work done on a “under the table” shop will not show up. Just wanted to point that out. Another good tip is start the 3.6 and let it come to temp. Listen for the infamous tick. I’ve seen them trying to be sold with the tick 😅
Warranties only last so long. And even if you get a full warranty, if you do not make a wise choice to begin with, ex. Making sure no foreseeable issues, it may always be in the shop using that warranty. Please keep in mind, regardless of what the dealer tells you, warranties will not cover any modifications.... so if you get a Wrangler pre-built, you could still have issues ... so yeah, being smart about a used purchase is always a good idea. 😉
@@JeepingForBeginners thank you do much for that information. So jeep offered a 7year warranty, now I know to ask if any mods were done. Thank you so much for your advice. I once had a sales man drop 5 grand on a 2016 Rubicon. I was alone shopping at the time, as tempted as I was to accept, something in my gut told me it was just too good to be true. 🤔😔
Warranties don’t cover preexisting conditions. Any claim turned in during the warranties first year is likely going to be challenged by the warranty provider. Warranties are expensive, often more expensive than the problem would be to fix. Personally, I don’t buy warranties.
I don’t understand what you mean by a cheap suspension and shocks, by Rough Country. That’s only your opinion. Rough Country has a very good reputation. That is what we run on all of our Jeeps. Never had a problem!! The cost is not cheap either. Yes, cheaper than Fox but, why pay double for just a name?
I had a 99 grand Cherokee. Gave me lots of issues. I am not mechanically inclined to own such a high maintenance vehicle. Sold it for 400 dollars. Expensive to repair heads were bad so I cut my losses
What’s the maximum mileage you would consider when buying a Wrangler JL? I wanted something below 40k miles. Seeing a lot of them in the 50-60k mileage range. Is that acceptable? (I plan on keeping the car for a long time)
12 to 15k per model year is average. Higher is okay if price is lower, but lower mileage means higher price. Ultimately, if you maintain it, and it was maintained, it doesn't matter as much
@tradde11thats where I would look at the carfax. If it’s had multiple owners with low or high mileage, then you can assume that it might be an unreliable vehicle. Especially if the sale dates are close together. Might not be a reliable way of looking at it, but I’d rather play it on the safe side rather than buying a money pit.
Here's another pro tip. Don't buy a jeep with an Angry Grill (Angry Girl). This is a useless "look at me" mod, and you won't get a warm reception from the real jeep crowd. Many Jeep owners I know will withhold the jeep wave from jeeps with an angry grill. Also, at least out west where I live jeepers withhold the jeep wave from street modded jeeps, like those with 20 inch or larger wheels and overly wide street tires. While there are many who modify their jeeps in this way (Angry Girls with big "rims" and wide ass street tires), real jeep entusiasts frown on these sorts of mods. #lockersbeforelightbars! My apologies if I offended you.
Honestly CarFax means very little. I was in an major accident, I got car fixed out of pocket and it was never reported. Car Fax pulls from reports that are filed. If a report is never filed, no one ever knows
True, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look at it. It can tell you a lot more than just that or at least give you an idea of what it might have been through even though it’s not perfect.
Hey Josh, Thanks for very informative video. If possible show video on what are the things that must not be accepted at any price and what things may be acceptable even when not in perfectly prestine condition?
Mileage is just a number. It's like asking would I date someone over 50? It's not the mileage or age that matters, it's the level of maintenance.... how was it treated for the first 100k, will tell you if it will last the second 100k. Then there is you, how are u gonna treat it over the next 100k? Make sense? Any mechanical object can run for ever, if taken care of properly and on time. A Jeep with more than 100k is not dead, but it may need far more $$ and TLC from you, then a Jeep with fewer miles to keep going. No vehicle can run forever if neglected. So take care of it, fix the small shit, and keep it going. Mileage doesn't matter. The level of maintenance does. 😀
I want an old used jeep so bad but i know nothing about the technical stuff!!! It scares me! I dont want it breaking down and i have no extra money to fix anything that goes wrong. But i have a dog now and in need of a car now and i wish i could get a wrangler so badly.
Buying less expensive mods does not mean the vehicle was not take care of. 99% of Jeeps i see all done up are "Pavement Princesses".
@@JeepingForBeginners Wisdom here! 🇺🇲🛻
There is absolutely nothing wrong with a Jeep that has scratches underneath from off-roading. When I get under the vehicle I’m looking for rust or broken parts. Drag marks just let me know it’s had a fun time.
Right!? Yut!
Agreed!
Sure, it might have had a fun time but it can also mean you’ll be spending a lot of extra money on repairs from the fun time it had.
I WISH I'd seen this before purchasing my 2017 Wrangler Unltd Sport! Terrific information, thank you.
What exactly has you concerned about it?
Im deciding between 2.0 liter turbo and thr 3.6? Any recommendation?
@@SwiftestTailor easy to work on, for the most part. I am handy and actually enjoy most of the repairs.
Very helpful video! I only drive stick shift (my preference) so it’s much more difficult to find the one 🤪
Dang I wish I had that problem, I’m trying to find a jeep with automatic transmission and all I can find are stick shifts 😔
Even thou a year old. Ty for this! looking for one now!
Take another person and have them move steering back and forth then you can see if steering or suspension needs work. You should reach down and pull on belt tensioner. I would expect better bolts on the control arms for 33k. And look at the track bar mount. Make sure there is no movement bacl and forth where track bar mounts to axle.
the other thing with Modded vehicles is the quality or the parts used
Starting at 8:35, that blue JKU has some accessory bolted to the rear door hinges. What is it?
Those are fold out steps to assist in reaching the roof. I have a set on my JKU as well.... comes in handy
I bought a jeep with similar equipment being equal all are JL williys 2 door. Out of 3, one was off roaded as evidenced by scratches on the side and under body. I bought the one that was never off roaded. Prices were equal. I want to be the one that puts those scars 😊
What are your thoughts on Teraflex? Very informative video.
I prefer teraflex for suspension. I think they make a great product, and stand behind it. Ran their 4.5 inch kit on my first JK, their 2.5" kit on my last JK as well....
@@JeepingForBeginners thanks so much for the response. I’m currently looking into Teraflex’s 2.5” lift for my JK
I think you will very happy overall with that kit
Get the hard top , very hard and expensive to get it later , soft tops are easy to get
been looking for months - I have yet to find a used jeep that DOESN'T have rust.
May want to change the area your looking in, perhaps willing to venture south or west... will help lessen the rust issue
*texan laugh*
Jeeps are POS that rust, break, paint falls off (literally), etc. etc. etc. etc. Buy at your own risk. Unless you know what you are doing and can afford it.
@@JeepingForBeginnersnot true humidity is crazy Deep South
All vehicles rust. Surface rust is normal...You just don't want flaking rust, unless you know how to and want to weld.
Thank you sir I appreciate it I’m learning a lot
Wow that great. I’m looking to buy a JL without all these crazy mods and hopefully find something like you
I’m watching this in November 2022. In my area of Oklahoma I’m seeing a lot of used Wranglers and Gladiators from 2020. Is there a particular problem with the 2020 models that I should be looking for?
No.... Leasing was a HUGE thing during the Pandemic. And now all those leases have come due.... so hence the overflow of a particular late model year
@@JeepingForBeginners Thank you for the information I appreciate it.
It's actually hard tops that are prone to leaks. It's pretty rare for soft tops to leak.
😂😆🤣😝🙄🤡
Nothing is 100%, but that doesn’t make his point of checking it invalid.
Thanks for the good advise....very important to check b4 final decision....Gb..
So does any of this matter if I plan to get a warranty? I'm looking to purchase used, but I'm afraid of buying a lemon 🍋 😩
You better pull up that cover and check that oiler cooler housing
On the black Jeep that was heavily modified…. Are those led headlights?
Yeah, and actually the same ones I run on mine. They are nice headlights
Any known issues with 2001 wrangler sport models?
Thank you so much for the advice
wow nice video 👌🏼 i learned something new today
Great info and video Josh
Thank you. Hope it helps. 😀
I had a 99 grand Cherokee. Gave me lots of issues. I am not mechanically inclined to own such a high maintenance vehicle. Sold it for 400 dollars. Expensive to repair heads were bad so I cut my losses
Excellent advice!
I definitely appreciate this video so so much! Thank you ❤
Nice work Josh! Thank you.
Very informative video. But your music is too loud.
Great video thank you We are new to Las Vegas and looking for our first jeep. Need a 4 door if you are aware of any good deals out there let me know.
honestly a tacoma is a better bang for your buck even if they are a little underpowered
First thing I do when buying any vehicle is crawl underneath.
Great video! Thanks for the info!!!
I bought a used jeep 2 years ago. Never ever again!!! If someone gave me a new one, I would sell it that day!!!
What model and why? I am thinking of getting a Jeep 😢
More of it! Great Video!
You never even pulled up the front driver and passenger floor mats and check for rotted floor panels due to Jeeps leaking
Greatly appreciated 🙏
I love how the thumbnail has nothing to do with the video. Great job!
Lov to buy one
Excellent insight
Very good information.
Would you recommend buying a used wrangler that has over 100k miles? I’m looking for one and would daily drive it. Found 3 all over 100k miles.

Muito Obrigado.
No problem, hope it helps! 😀
Great tips .. thank you !
You're welcome
I thought Jeep oil leaks were just a factory feature 😄
Well done!!
Well done Josh, thanks
I want an old used jeep so bad but i know nothing about the technical stuff!!! It scares me! I dont want it breaking down and i have no extra money to fix anything that goes wrong. But i have a dog now and in need of a car now and i wish i could get a wrangler so badly.
In my area there is about a 6k difference or less between used and new Wranglers...I bought my Wrangler new and I am better for it.
Dont need to look for anything but the jeep badge. Once confirmed leave.
