    Best tip for buying a new jeep with the 3.6…..CHECK CHECK CHECK the engine oil cooler. Make sure it isn’t leaking because that’s gonna be the most common issue. Shine a light down from the top on the left side of the engine (closest to you) and see if there is a puddle of oil. If so, you’re gonna have a 400 dollar fix then and there.

      Oil will also leak from the base of the oil filter if the 0 ring wasn't intalled properly, easy to do.

    Buying less expensive mods does not mean the vehicle was not take care of. 99% of Jeeps i see all done up are "Pavement Princesses". Guys build them up to look cool, with no intention of ever going off road. They are normally babied and meticulously maintained. You dont need top dollar mods to do that. Any one buying a Jeep to go off road knows what they are looking for...

      Same here. It just aggravates me because this dealership had to know that mine was leaking. It was on the lot for 30 days. You can't tell me they didn't see some drips underneath there because I only had it for one day and I could see drips in my driveway.

I have had to replaced the poorly designed oil cooler, leaking axle seals, faulty poorly designed dual stage oil pump, death wobble and replaced steering stabilizer. I reported these problems while under warranty and Chrysler/Dealer just gave me the run around until I was over the warranty. I’m sure not all jeeps are like mine. I have owned Jeeps of various models since 1972, most of which I purchased used with low milage. My one new Wrangler was a soft top which I regret for numerous reasons to include the dreaded front-end wobble and someone cutting through the plastic window in the back to steal stuff. The most fun was a pre-1950 Willy with no top that I explored the Southwest deserts in. When looking at any vehicle to purchase, I always want a second set of eyes, preferably with mechanical experience, to spot the good and the bad that I might not otherwise. And yes, I agree with looking at the underside first and foremost.

    Take another person and have them move steering back and forth then you can see if steering or suspension needs work. You should reach down and pull on belt tensioner. I would expect better bolts on the control arms for 33k. And look at the track bar mount. Make sure there is no movement bacl and forth where track bar mounts to axle.

      I would say that depends on where you live or where the Jeep has been. If you’re around the city, it’s more likely that they don’t change the oil themselves. Carfax isn’t perfect by any means, but can give you a better idea of how it was taken care of. I would use it more to see how many owners there has been. Not a perfect method, but if it’s had a lot of different owners, then it could mean that it’s had a lot of issues.

I examined over 500 Jeeps for sale on line before I found what I was looking for.

    Here's another pro tip. Don't buy a jeep with an Angry Grill (Angry Girl). This is a useless "look at me" mod, and you won't get a warm reception from the real jeep crowd. Many Jeep owners I know will withhold the jeep wave from jeeps with an angry grill. Also, at least out west where I live jeepers withhold the jeep wave from street modded jeeps, like those with 20 inch or larger wheels and overly wide street tires. While there are many who modify their jeeps in this way (Angry Girls with big "rims" and wide ass street tires), real jeep entusiasts frown on these sorts of mods. #lockersbeforelightbars! My apologies if I offended you.

      Known for gaskets leaks. Get underneath and check for fluid leaks at rear main and oil pan.... also known for window regulator failures, so be sure to check all power windows for correct operation. Otherwise... the normal stuff, like wear and tear, drivability, weird noises. Those kinda things. Good luck!

    • @JeepingForBeginners
      @JeepingForBeginners  2 роки тому +3

      Warranties only last so long. And even if you get a full warranty, if you do not make a wise choice to begin with, ex. Making sure no foreseeable issues, it may always be in the shop using that warranty. Please keep in mind, regardless of what the dealer tells you, warranties will not cover any modifications.... so if you get a Wrangler pre-built, you could still have issues ... so yeah, being smart about a used purchase is always a good idea. 😉

      Warranties don’t cover preexisting conditions. Any claim turned in during the warranties first year is likely going to be challenged by the warranty provider. Warranties are expensive, often more expensive than the problem would be to fix. Personally, I don’t buy warranties.

      Correct, Jeeps are Harleys with 4 wheels. They have gone BK a few times over the years but kids will be kids. Cheap plastics, thin metals, shitty ride but hey...."it's a Jeep thang". I saw so many kids who worked for me with these bottomless pits of despair plowing their meager cash into fixing them (not fixing them up....simply fixing them to get on the road again). Oh well.

      @JeepingForBeginners  Місяць тому

      Based on experience, working in a jeep service department, the 3.6 may have its issues, but it's tried and true. More common, also means better long term parts support. The 2.0 is to reliant on a turbo for power, and I've seen to many fail because of it. So for long term, overall cost of ownership, the 3.6 is my choice

    scratches and dents from off road? if you are rock crawling in the northeast you are going to get them- you are not abusing the vehicle- you are using it. i agree on the leaks , suspension and other tips- but scratches and dents on a 4wheel drive? you want a mall crawler then...

    What’s the maximum mileage you would consider when buying a Wrangler JL? I wanted something below 40k miles. Seeing a lot of them in the 50-60k mileage range. Is that acceptable? (I plan on keeping the car for a long time)

    • @JeepingForBeginners
      @JeepingForBeginners  Рік тому +1

      12 to 15k per model year is average. Higher is okay if price is lower, but lower mileage means higher price. Ultimately, if you maintain it, and it was maintained, it doesn't matter as much

    • @Coonazz791
      @Coonazz791 Рік тому

      @tradde11thats where I would look at the carfax. If it’s had multiple owners with low or high mileage, then you can assume that it might be an unreliable vehicle. Especially if the sale dates are close together. Might not be a reliable way of looking at it, but I’d rather play it on the safe side rather than buying a money pit.

    Dude, I've been in the game a long time. 10 years at jeep as a tech and 3 in the aftermarket and fab side. Smittybilt is cheap. It's the rough country of body parts. Also shopping for a used jk, note the 3.8 vs the 3.6. The 3.6 will leak from the oil filter valley. Also 3.6 ticking.
    I can make a whole video rebuttal to this.

    • @JeepingForBeginners
      @JeepingForBeginners  Рік тому +7

      Fortunately, this video was not actually made for you. It was made for those with zero knowledge or very little when it comes to experience. Hence jeeping for beginners. I'm glad you can see through some of the things we see daily, infact I'm sure it helps you to have a better rig and a better sense of what you need. And if you need to have the absolute best, and name brands, thats also okay. However, just like the online forums, we are not here to put anyone down, nor are we here to show off that we may have had more experience then others. We are here to share. So if the content does not benefit you, that's perfectly okay. 👌 if you can gain some use, then great! At the end of the day, my opinion, from my years of experience of working for FCA, and such, may be different then yours... and that's awesome. But it's not a reason to hop on, and try to prove your the bigger ego on campus. I may simplify things, sometimes over simplify, but that's the point. To keep it simple.
      Anyways, thank you so much for watching, glad the video made you think, cause that was the real point! Have a great night! See you on the next one! 😉
