  • After 2,5 years I felt the time was right to make my 'long term review' of the Moog Subsequent 37.
    This won't be a full review with all the ins and outs (there are enough of those videos already) but it will give you some insight in how I make use of the Subsequent 37.
    I will try to explain what I like about it and what I like less and also how I'm using it most of the time.
    If you are in the market for getting one, make sure you watch this video. It's 10 minutes well spent (if I say so myself) and hopefully gives you a bit if information that could help you in your buying decision.

    Very helpful _and_ entertaining review, thanks! One thing you didn’t mention and thus might try out if you haven’t; I also play my bass _through_ the S37 at gigs which is doubly entertaining for the audience. What’s great, of course, is being able to break into lead lines or duophonic support for the keyboardist (or whomever is soloing), but the ability to process external input is also a major win for the S37!
    *NOTE* : When I’m feeling _really_ ambitious, my rig is: fretless bass -> S37 -> MFX pedal -> PA + upright (electric and/or acoustic) -> compressor & EQ rig -> PA (sometimes combining both through a mixer for additional FX prior to PA)… but sometimes I just gotta run straight to house!

    • @tricks-and-tips
      @tricks-and-tips  Місяць тому +1

      Thanks! Yeah, amazing. How do you keep the amp envelope open, so the input is passed through? I tried when I first got the S37 but failed and never took the time to experiment more

      @@tricks-and-tips apologies for delayed response! The quick’n’easy answer is to just hit the Latch under the Release knob in the Amplifier section. That said, it can be a bit fiddly to get working right (or at all!), especially if you have “POT MODE” set to “THRU” (which, I believe is the default). Moog really wants you to twiddle them knobs and doing so can usually get you unstuck!

      BTW, using the audio in is just the beginning. You can plug into any of the CV inputs to get interesting results, or plug an instrument into the Audio In and, say, a drum machine into the Filler CV input for something more immediately useful. I don’t know what all circuitry Moog use for those inputs but they’re super beefy and super flexible.

    Nice video. I use the source audio collider pedal alongside mine. It has a small footprint and gives quick access to great sound reverb and delay together. Also with presets. It makes a nice 37 companion.

    I have my S37 now for about 1 year. Most time (99%) I work DAW-less (just jamming for my own pleasure). As for me I like synths with "a function per knob" capability. And that it´s why the S37 is an important synth in my setup (and of course because the fabulous sound). Adding effects is imho one of the secrets of sonic painting. I've started with a less expensive NUX Atlantic (stereo in/out, reverb, delay) that did a pretty good job (now a Chase Bliss Mood is working with the S37). I know there are alternatives available, e.g. the Sequential Pro 2 oder Pro 3, but the S37 is still a beauty (and will be kept in my setup) ... and it´s a Moog (in best tradition).

    • @tricks-and-tips
      @tricks-and-tips  Рік тому +1

      Yeah exactly. Nothing beats grabbing that knob that does what is should do.
      And FX are needed indeed, for me too.
      Never considered the Mood for the S37, but I have the Source Audio Collider, which I also love a lot!
      I’m looking for a chorus pedal maybe. One that does not eat up all the low end.

    Great review, thanks. You do a good job of coaxing nice sounds from the S37.

      Thanks. I bought my S37 before the P3 came out. But it’s a great synth for sure. At the time of introduction it was much more expensive than the S37, so I was not that interested for myself.

    Nice video! I picked up the Subsequent 37 a little under a year ago and like it a lot. It lives in my studio, and I also have a Bass Station 2 for the practice space and to gig with. You're right, if you're on a budget, or want to keep it lighter, the BS2 is a really good alternative. It's seriously a crazy good value monosynth for the price. I will say though, that while there is a ton of overlap between them, they each have their place and own sonic palette, and I enjoy them both for different reasons. Also as you stated, since it's so heavy (and expensive) I'm not sure I want to gig with the Moog. It's a little like owning an expensive car- it's an experience to drive it, but I want to keep it clean and only take it out for special occasions. It'll also hold its value really well. Btw, I also play guitar, and I have a Headrush MX5 effects pedal. It's known as an amp sim, but it has great effects too that I use with the Moog (and also a BigSky for reverb).

      Thanks.
      Yeah, the S37 is my favorite synth.
      I do take it with me when I need it, but it is 'a thing' to carry around for sure.
      And thanks for the update on the BS2. I have always had my eyes on one, but with a Minitaur and a S37 already.... There are other things on the list.
      We use a headrush pedal too in the band (our guitar player) they surely make great sounding FX.

    The Sub Phatty is great too. Was my first synth and was so fun to play. Didn’t have the second lfo and extra mod sources but had just about everything else . For less the price of a new Sub 37 I bought a used one plus a used Korg Prologue 8 which is also a great polyphonic synth.

    Great video and thoughts on the Subsequent 37. I agree with everything . I got mine early summer last year, bargain price second hand in UK, couldn't resist, just love it. I since gt the Moog Matriarch and both, I hope never leave me, they are both different and give me so much pleasure. I feel lucky to own 2 Moogs and smile everytime I look at them and go to another world when I play them. My only wish is that I wish i knew about the CV version earlier as I'm now getting into Modular but the Matriarch covers that side fine.

    One thing I was really surprised about is that the pots feel quite cheap and wobbly to me. I was expecting sturdy, tough, old school quality. I've only played it dry but the sound didn't really inspire me - however i've heard beautiful things from it like this video shows. Why doesn't a 'Sub' synth have a sine wave?

    • @tricks-and-tips
      @tricks-and-tips  7 місяців тому

      Ok, mine does not have that.
      Not like my Minitaur (which has a bit wobbly pots)
      If you ever try the Bass station 2, I was disappointed with those pots (expecting them to be like my Peak quality)
      I really can’t complain about the sound. It’s always a pleasure to play. There are more flexibility options out there, but for me the S37 is probably last to leave the setup.
      It does open up with good FX, which is what I always use on my synths btw 😊
