How are you using you Blackcbox?? For me it's a fun device that's pretty straight-forward if you're looking to play sync'd longer stems/backing tracks during a live performance. Or use it the way I like, as a live looper but in a studio setting :)

@RickyTinez the Korg Electribe wave on an iPad 11 pro upwards .. is magic for this. It doesn’t live sample… but it has a very powerful and fun drum machine which you can load your sample in from the wifi…and then you have 8 wave table synths that you can record parts live and on the fly. I am getting rid of my elktron analog rytm ii because this $50 app is light years away. Adding a novation sl mkiii is a chefs kiss to this app. Every part has a Korg kaos pad as well.

Have you check out the OP-Z? Aside from being a powerful sequencer it also does the things you mentioned in the beginning.
You can create a loop (pattern) then copy and paste to a free slot (up to 16) and make new changes to that loop. By the end it sounds like a totally different track, but you can seamlessly go back to previous patterns all staying within tempo.
Awesome way to perform live and make an entire song on one device. Not to mention you can sample and have midi through with whatever gear you want to add.

I have a Blackbox and an SP404 mkII, and I’m just not all that skilled in production. I’ve made a few beats, and these devices are insanely fun, but I’m still too fresh to understand why I would need both. Scared I’ll sell one and regret it! Blackbox is great for “stealing” a synth, but I can’t figure out how to get mod control, so I can add wiggle from my KeyStep Pro.

The longer sample stopped playing because it needed to stream from the microSD card that you removed. Shorter samples can play from memory. The best practice is to save your preset before you pull the microSD card out. Then reload the preset to reconnect the file.
Thanks for showing us how you use the blackbox. It’s always great to see different approaches.

headrush makes one called the looper board. It will let you decide if your first loop you record sets the length of the loop, or if you want it predetermined length, you can set that up, or a third option it will just let you freewheel loops in case you want your loops to easily go off the rails and get out of sync, lol. It has 4 different loop channels and has some very clever stuff going on with loop length and quantization type of stuff. It is a pedal board that is probably geared more towards guitarists, but I think anyone could use it. The new Roland desktop looper will do that too. But sometimes you might have to do some trickery, like start out with a 4 bar drum loop pre recorded so that it sets the loop length automatically (which was a trick I used on the older Roland sometimes) One nice thing I think I remember about the Looper Board is that not all the loops have to be the same length, so even if you start out with a 4 bar drum loop, if you record a 32 bar bass loop over top of it, it has no problem with that. Which used to be way more of a problem in the early days of loopers. I'm glad to see more coming out. I always wanted one that had 4 or more separate tracks that I could assign each to a separate output, which we are finally seeing. Thank the stars. I even looked at using Ableton Live as a live looper to achieve this. There was some smaller more proprietary software loopers that popped up, but none really spoke to me. I think my mind aligns with the concept of the Looper Board more than most others, but this is my first time seeing this one and I really like the smaller desktop (or micstand mounted) form factor. Cool. I'm willing to bet you can hook up some midi control pedals to it and get foot control if you wanted that. I can't imagine they didn't think of that.

Check check. Love it. I am using Push 3 Standalone for this workflow. I also feed 5 stereo channels out of the push into a model 1 mixer to mix loops on the go and record them back into the Push as new loops or tracks etc. But the Blackbox is intriguing, especially because it is small.

@@RickyTinezexactly. And it feels great to have a proper mixer with its two sends and filters at my fingertips. I also use this setup live for my improv Techno duo, Draaht. The Push is basically used as a looper and FX unit, most of the sound is done with external, analog synthesizers, but of course I could also easily use Push’s synths instead. I like that use of your very own voice! Weird thing: it’s something I stumbled upon a lot recently - while I totally neglected this in my own messing around.
Funny though, that using the own voice is the most natural starting point one could think off: humming, whistling, random vocals that come to mind …
… and it’s a great ground work to expand upon, no matter whether it survives along the way in one shape or another - or if it just evolves into something else.
Great video on that Blackbox workflow, Ricky, thanks for sharing this one! 😊

I'm using the RC-505 mk2 because it does all those wants and needs you mentioned but the layout is all right in front of you. Even more simple than the Blackbox with its big Fisher Price buttons. But I just added the Blackbox to use in conjunction with the RC-505 because there's things the Blackbox can do as a sampler and sequencer that the RC-505 can't because it's just a looper. The Blackbox is so much more than just a looper. It's a whole bunch of things and it's excellent at all those things.

Toraiz SP-16 is the king of this. 16 tracks available per project, each one can be a stereo sample track, MIDI track or a Thru/FX track. Get a loop going on an external machine, grab a 1, 4, 16bar etc loop on the SP, move to the next track, get another loop going, grab it on the SP, move to the next track, rinse, repeat. You can build up an entire song in very little time without ever having to stop the sequencer once. There are definitely drawbacks to the machine but this is one of the things it does very well. Samples are stretched in real time to whatever BPM the current project is so you can use them again in different projects with different BPMs. Projects can then be exported later in to Ableton as well.

Seems to check all of the boxes you've mentioned, unless I'm not quite understanding your definition of wanting to add to loops without adding to the same track. You can do that on the Deluge. The blackbox is great if you only have like one drum & one melody synth: 1. record loops (if your name isn't Ricky, zoom in like crazy and get start and end exactly right in editing) 2. use a sequencer to start these loops via MIDI to build a song (I'm using the external hardware sequencer Polyend Seq for that, as the internal 1010 sequencer has the tiniest bars and is very hard to control, also I never understood the 1010 "song mode").
So while it's handy to try out loop placement with the Blackbox's touch screen, I prefer to get a an exact start via MIDI with a sequencer (and also change velocity if needed) - I can then think of other things, like cutoff when playing my song.
I usually send "beats" and "melodies" to different outputs on the blackbox to apply outboard effects like EQ, compression or sidechain to different parts of the song, so the freely assignable outputs (1, 2 and headphones) are very valuable to me too. 😍

I own and like the Blackbox, but if you're working from a desk you could also just use any midi controller and Ableton. It is nice that the Blackbox can do this but I'm generally using it more to play back longer samples. Not sure that I'd ever want to be messing around with changing loop and record settings on the device for live looping when I can do it easier in Ableton and just have a setup where the recording is routed to cue to be able to confirm everything before sending it out to the mix. And if you need to re-record, no one will ever know. Nothing against the Blackbox, it's a great little piece of hardware, the main thing is that I don't know if you can midi-map a lot of this on it so you aren't trying to use the screen and adjusting controls in a live situation. When you can just make an Ableton template that can do all of it in a far more capable and versatile way. And for a lot cheaper, it's less than 1/4 the price of a Blackbox for the standard edition which does all of this better.

BB is now how I assemble all of my tracks. Best investment I made in gear, in more than a few years, especially at the price! I quit using Ableton, and computers/tablet/phone for music, in general, in around 2014, after being an AL user since 2001. (Before that, Propheads Reason, and before that, pre-Sony Acid Pro.) Blackbox, to me, is a completely minimalized Ableton Live, with just 16 clips. I make more (And probably better) music, when I have less options. Moving away from using a DAW with every tool needed, built-in, just to bring all my gear together in finished tracks, to working solely with hardware, threw up a set of serious challenges, that BB actually removed. I couldn't be happier with mine! Really fast to get a good sounding track rolling, then fun to jam that track, real-time!

@@user-dt9kk6sg8z I create a mixture of some recorded loops of whatever gear I have an idea for, as well as sample, slice, then sequence slices into a few variations of parts, pretty much how I've always used Ableton Live, apart from how I also used a few VST's in Live, and Acid. All of my VST'S these days, are not VST's. I also have a large library of samples I have either created /or collected over the last 30 or so years, which I also use for sequencing, and such.

Ricky, as Johnny Cash once said to Terry Gross: "You are really good at what you do."
One tip: mount your overhead camera on rhe ceiling or a wall-to-wall pipe. Its bouncing a lot at times in this video. I'm guessing you have it boomed way out or clamped to the desk out of the cameras view?
That said, one thing you do well is to focus on the music (the gear only to the extent that it makes the music, not the GAS monetization) and keep it all low key. Good work! Keep it up!

I kind of work with the same workflow on my two EHX2880 machines. I know it's the same for EHX45000, but I don't know if it's the same for EHX95000. As with the 1010 box, EHX2880 can midi sync, but limited to 4 mono or 2 stereo tracks, plus one mixdown (this is why I have two).
On the EHX2880 machines, there are no effects and no smart layering of loops, but they have the Punch-In functionality that I personally need.
With the EHX2880's Punch-In and Quantize functions engaged, I can keep recording on a loop, but it doesn't overdub in the traditional way, where you can hear the previous recorded loop. Instead, it just keeps recording over the previous loop until I'm happy with the take. So when I punch out on the device, or the foot controller (handy when you use both hands), I can punch out when the loop feels good, instead of stressing on getting the correct take in one go. This leaves more room for improvisation (for better and for worse) and also helps to fix loops with reverb trails, as I bake the effects into the loop a lot.
If the 1010 box had the same Punch In function as the EHX2880 machines (which it might), it would be a shut-up-and-take-my-money situation for me.
My workflow right now is looping on the EHX machines, and then recording them into OP1F when laying down the track. I can also at any time pull out the files from the EHX2880 straight into Ableton via CF card.

the most inspirational modern gear for me.
Ricky please convince Aron of #1010music to put an advanced arpeggiator and a chord mode (so to play triads by just pushing the small squares when live) and the perfection is achieved.

  • @drh713
    @drh713 6 місяців тому +2

Maschine can do this if you set mode to "loop" and target to "sound" or "pattern". Recording to "sound" would be best if your plan is to put a bunch of different sounds in a single group. That would be similar to what you're doing with the blackbox. If you wanted to have a group with a bunch of shaker patterns you can switch between and another group with just bass loops and another for chords (keep going; you have as many groups as you want); then recording to patterns would make sense. You don't have 16 recording slots; you have as many as you want.
You mentioned a long time ago that you used to use maschine but felt it always led you to creating the same song over and over. It might be worth a revisit.
